If you are looking for a current “10-disc CD changer,” reset the specification before you buy: the contemporary models verified for this guide hold five or six discs, not ten. The Yamaha CD-C603 is a five-disc player with PlayXChange and USB file playback, while the Onkyo DX-C390 is a six-disc carousel with 40-track programming and optical and coaxial digital outputs. Both are genuine multi-disc options; neither should be advertised as a 10-disc unit.
A 10-disc format did exist in older magazine-style changers, but the historical evidence does not establish a currently available model that is a sensible recommendation. Treat vintage equipment as a separate used-market project, not as proof that a particular modern player holds ten discs.

These are manufacturer specifications, not results from a controlled listening test. Crutchfield’s August 26, 2026 buying guide also identifies the Onkyo as a six-disc multi-disc player, reinforcing the capacity distinction. Check the exact regional product page and manual before ordering because specifications and support can change.

Choose the Yamaha CD-C603 for USB files and flexible disc rotation
The Yamaha is the better match when you want a conventional disc changer plus a way to play files from a USB storage device. Its documented formats are MP3, WMA, AAC, WAV and FLAC. Yamaha specifies WAV and FLAC playback up to 96 kHz/24-bit; that limit applies to those formats and should not be read as a claim that every file type accepts the same resolution.
Its five-disc PlayXChange mechanism is designed for uninterrupted listening: Yamaha says, “PlayXChange allows you to change four CDs while the fifth keeps playing.” In practical terms, one disc remains in the transport while the other four positions are accessible. This is useful for a dinner playlist or a long listening session where you want to refresh most of the stack without stopping the current album.
For system integration, the CD-C603 provides a pair of RCA analog outputs and an optical digital output. Use RCA when your receiver, integrated amplifier or powered speakers have a line-level stereo input. Use optical when the receiving component has an optical input and you want the digital-to-analog conversion to occur there.

Choose the Onkyo DX-C390 for six physical discs and extensive programming
The Onkyo stores six discs in a carousel. Its documented controls are aimed at people who build sequences from several albums: up to 40 tracks can be programmed, and six repeat modes are specified. The manufacturer also describes changing five discs while the remaining disc plays, so you can replenish the carousel without interrupting the active track.
The DX-C390 has fixed analog outputs plus both optical and coaxial digital outputs. Coaxial can be useful when an amplifier or receiver has a digital coaxial input but no optical jack. The presence of three output types does not mean they should all be connected; choose one path that matches the input on your receiving equipment.
Onkyo’s product page uses promotional language about convenience and uninterrupted playback. That wording describes the feature set, not an independent verdict about sound quality. The available evidence does not include controlled measurements or comparative listening between the Yamaha and Onkyo.

Sound quality: what the evidence can and cannot tell you
Both manufacturers make positive claims about audio performance on their product pages, but those claims are specifications and marketing statements from the companies that make the players. No cited source supplies a controlled test, frequency-response comparison, distortion measurement, or level-matched listening result that establishes one model as the better-sounding choice.
Your system will also affect what you hear. The receiver or amplifier, speakers, room acoustics, mastering of the CD, and connection path all matter. A digital connection may move digital-to-analog conversion into the receiver; an RCA connection uses the player’s analog output stage. That is a system-design choice, not proof that one cable or output is inherently superior.
For that reason, select between these changers by capacity, file support, programming, and available inputs rather than by an unsupported “best sound” ranking. If a retailer lists a subjective sound-quality claim, treat it as an opinion unless it provides a repeatable test method and comparable measurements.

Connection guide: match the output to the amplifier input
Before buying a cable, look at both components. The player’s output must correspond to an input on the receiver, integrated amplifier, DAC or powered speaker system.

The Yamaha documentation establishes RCA and optical outputs. The Onkyo documentation establishes fixed analog, optical and coaxial outputs. Neither source promises universal compatibility with every receiver, soundbar or DAC, so inspect the labels and manual for your particular equipment.

- Confirm capacity and region. Verify that the model is the five-disc Yamaha CD-C603 or six-disc Onkyo DX-C390 (or another exact model documented by its manufacturer). Check the regional manual, mains-voltage requirements and included accessories.
- Power everything off. Place the changer on a stable, ventilated shelf with room for the carousel or tray to open. Do not stack equipment where it blocks ventilation.
- Choose one signal path. Use a stereo RCA cable from the player’s left/right outputs to an analog input, or use optical/coaxial digital from the player to a matching digital input. Do not assume a USB port, if present, is an audio output; on the Yamaha it is for playback from storage media.
- Connect the control and power leads. Plug the player into the correct mains supply and install the remote batteries. Keep the front-panel infrared receiver unobstructed.
- Load discs carefully. Put each disc label-side up in its numbered position. Check that a disc is seated inside the recess before closing the carousel; a loose disc can prevent the mechanism from initializing.
- Select the correct amplifier input. Choose the input name that corresponds to the jack you used, then set the player and amplifier to a low volume for the first test.
- Test one disc before programming. Start playback, confirm left and right channels, and listen for skips. If there is no sound, recheck the selected input and whether your amplifier expects analog or digital audio.
- Program or repeat only after basic playback works. On the Onkyo, use the documented 40-track programming function and select one of its six repeat modes. On the Yamaha, test PlayXChange by changing an idle position while another disc is playing.
Using the changer features without interrupting music

Play the disc currently in the transport, then open the changer’s accessible positions according to the front-panel or remote instructions. Replace only the positions that are not playing. Yamaha’s stated four-disc change capability means the active fifth disc remains in playback while those four positions are refreshed. Do not force the carousel or attempt to remove the disc that the mechanism is reading.

Onkyo carousel and programming
The Onkyo’s six-disc carousel lets you select among six loaded discs. While one disc plays, the manufacturer says five others can be changed. For a custom sequence, program tracks in the order you want, staying within the documented 40-track limit. Repeat modes are useful for a single track, a disc or a programmed sequence, but the exact button names can vary by remote revision; follow the supplied manual for your regional unit.

- Exact capacity: Make sure the listing says five or six discs as appropriate. A generic “10-disc” headline can be a retailer error or a reference to an older model.
- Output match: Confirm that your amplifier has RCA, optical or coaxial input matching the connection you plan to use.
- File requirements: Choose the Yamaha only if its documented USB support for MP3, WMA, AAC, WAV and FLAC is useful to you. Verify file-system and capacity limits in the manual before preparing a large drive; the cited product page does not establish every USB-storage restriction.
- Remote and manual: Multi-disc functions, programming and repeat controls are much easier to use with the original remote and instructions.
- Support status: Check the manufacturer’s current regional support page, warranty terms and availability of replacement remotes or service parts.
Used or vintage 10-disc checks
A July 1989 Hi-Fi Stereo Review article documents historical 10-disc magazine changers from several manufacturers. The available evidence is a search-result excerpt, and it does not verify current availability, reliability or value. If you pursue one, treat it as vintage hardware that needs model-specific research.
- Find the exact model number and obtain its original manual.
- Confirm that the magazine or cartridge is included and that replacements can still be found.
- Ask the seller to demonstrate loading, disc selection, track seeking, repeat and programmed playback.
- Listen for grinding, repeated retries, drawer slippage or failure to recognize discs; these can indicate aging belts, gears, optical assemblies or lubrication.
- Check that the unit’s voltage and plug suit your country. Older imports may need a properly rated transformer, not just a plug adapter.
- Price in possible servicing and shipping. A low purchase price does not guarantee economical repair.
Do not call a vintage unit a current recommendation until its condition, parts support and compatibility are verified. The historical article shows that the format existed; it does not establish a specific model as a good purchase today.
Troubleshooting common problems
The player powers on but produces no sound
- Confirm the amplifier is set to the input receiving the cable.
- For RCA, check both left and right plugs and try another known-good analog input.
- For optical or coaxial, verify that the receiver’s digital input is assigned to that jack and that its input mode accepts stereo PCM from a CD player.
- Test a different disc to rule out a damaged or unreadable CD.
The carousel will not load or change discs
- Stop playback and wait for the mechanism to finish its current operation.
- Make sure each disc is seated flat and that no disc is upside down or loose.
- Do not push the tray or carousel by hand. Repeated clicking, grinding or stalled movement points to a mechanical fault requiring the manual’s reset procedure or professional service.
USB files do not play on the Yamaha
- Confirm that the file uses one of the documented formats: MP3, WMA, AAC, WAV or FLAC.
- Check the WAV/FLAC sample-rate and bit-depth limit of 96 kHz/24-bit stated by Yamaha.
- Try a smaller, simply organized USB device and test a known-good file. The cited specification does not guarantee support for every codec variant, storage format or drive capacity.
Playback skips
- Clean the disc from the center outward with a soft, lint-free cloth.
- Check that the player sits level and is not being subjected to vibration.
- Try another disc. If several clean discs skip at the same point, the optical mechanism may need service.
How these choices compare with a single-disc player or streaming setup
A five- or six-disc changer is valuable when you already own CDs and want physical access to several albums without handling discs between tracks. It offers predictable playback and a simple front-panel experience. The trade-off is that the mechanism, carousel and remote add moving parts compared with a single-disc transport, and neither documented model is a ten-disc unit.
Streaming and network playback can provide a larger catalog, but they require a network-capable source, an account or local library management, and interfaces that change over time. The Yamaha’s USB support is a middle ground for files you own locally; it does not turn the player into a network streamer. Choose the format that matches how your music is stored rather than buying on the capacity claim alone.
Bottom line for a “10-disc” shopping list
For a current, documented multi-disc CD changer, start with the five-disc Yamaha CD-C603 if USB playback and PlayXChange matter, or the six-disc Onkyo DX-C390 if you want six physical discs, 40-track programming and both optical and coaxial digital outputs. Connect the output that matches your amplifier’s input, and treat sound-quality superiority as unproven because no controlled comparison is available here. A true ten-disc changer means entering the used or vintage market and accepting the additional work of verifying the exact model, magazine, condition, voltage and serviceability.
