For a smooth GTA 6 picture on a budget Samsung monitor, use the panel’s native resolution, the highest refresh rate that both the monitor and console support, Game Mode, and FreeSync/VRR when available. Connect the console through the correct HDMI port with a certified cable that meets the monitor’s bandwidth requirement. These settings address the two problems Samsung identifies most often: tearing when game frame delivery does not match refresh timing, and stutter when those timings diverge.

Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled for November 19, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar has not published a GTA VI-specific monitor preset, official frame-rate target, or PC system requirements in the official material available for this guide. Treat the configuration below as a pre-release console baseline; the final display modes, patches, and frame-rate behavior may change after launch.

Start with this baseline preset

Before changing individual controls, apply the following sequence. It avoids forcing a cheap monitor into a mode it cannot display and keeps the console, cable, and panel working within the same limits.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Resolution: select the Samsung display’s native resolution in the console’s video-output menu, when that resolution is offered.
  2. Refresh rate: choose the highest rate supported simultaneously by the Samsung model, its selected resolution, the HDMI connection, and the console.
  3. Monitor mode: turn on Game Mode in the Samsung on-screen menu. Samsung’s labels and available options vary by model.
  4. Variable refresh: enable FreeSync or VRR on the monitor and in the console if both devices support it.
  5. Connection: use the Samsung HDMI input specified for the required bandwidth and a certified HDMI cable that meets that requirement.
  6. Verification: confirm that the console reports the intended resolution, refresh rate, and VRR status rather than assuming a 120 Hz or 144 Hz mode is active.

Do not select a higher number merely because it appears in a menu. A budget Samsung display may be rated at 60, 75, 100, 120 Hz or higher, and the maximum can change when you select a different resolution. The console’s output screen and the exact monitor specification determine the usable combination.

What is known about GTA 6 display support

Rockstar’s official announcement lists PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S as the launch platforms and gives November 19, 2026 as the release date. The searched official pages do not state a GTA VI frame-rate target, supported performance modes, or a PC specification. Consequently, no honest guide can promise that a particular Samsung setting will produce 60, 120, or any other number of frames per second in the finished game.

The monitor advice here is therefore about synchronization and signal handling, not an undisclosed GTA VI preset. Once the game ships, its own video menu and the console’s output information should take precedence. If a patch changes the available mode, select the highest stable option that your complete setup can actually sustain.

Find your Samsung monitor’s real limits

Read the model specification

Locate the model code on the rear label, the monitor’s information screen, or its manual. Check four items: native resolution, maximum refresh rate at that resolution, HDMI version or bandwidth, and whether FreeSync/VRR is supported over HDMI. A monitor advertised as 144 Hz may reach that rate only at a particular resolution or through a particular input; a console cannot use a DisplayPort-only capability.

Check the input you will use

For PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, HDMI compatibility matters more than DisplayPort because both consoles connect over HDMI. If the monitor has more than one HDMI socket, use the one identified in its documentation for the required resolution and refresh combination. An older socket can silently limit the signal even when the panel itself is capable of more.

Record the starting state

Write down the current resolution, refresh rate, Game Mode state, and FreeSync/VRR state before changing anything. This gives you a known fallback if the screen goes blank or the console returns to an automatic mode.

Set the native resolution first

Native resolution means the number of pixels physically present in the panel. Selecting it avoids an unnecessary scaling step and normally produces the cleanest text and interface. In the console’s display settings, choose the option that matches the Samsung panel when it is available. If the console offers only a lower mode at the desired refresh rate, decide whether motion or image detail is more important for that particular title and monitor; do not claim a higher resolution is active when the console reports otherwise.

Changing resolution can alter the refresh-rate choices that appear. Recheck the refresh setting after every resolution change. A monitor may support a high refresh rate at one resolution but a lower rate at another, and the console may expose only combinations it has validated.

Choose the highest shared refresh rate

Refresh rate is how often the display can update each second. Samsung explains that when the refresh rate and the connected device’s FPS are both high, animation appears smoother and flicker is reduced. That statement does not establish GTA VI’s frame rate; it explains why you should use the highest shared mode your hardware offers.

Samsung capability at the selected resolution Practical target What to verify
60 Hz Use 60 Hz; do not force a higher value through an unsupported adapter or custom mode. The console reports 60 Hz and no unsupported signal warning appears.
75 Hz Use 75 Hz only if the console offers it at the native resolution and the monitor accepts it over HDMI. Some consoles may expose only standard output modes, so confirm the actual output.
100 Hz Use 100 Hz when the model, resolution, HDMI path, and console all list it. Check that selecting the mode does not switch the console to a different resolution.
120 Hz or higher Select the highest listed shared mode, but do not assume GTA VI will render at that rate. Confirm the console’s information panel and the monitor’s signal-information screen.

The number in the monitor’s marketing name is not proof of the signal currently in use. The active output is the intersection of the panel’s specification, the HDMI port, the cable, the selected resolution, and the console’s supported modes.

Turn on Samsung Game Mode

Open the Samsung on-screen display and enable Game Mode or the model’s equivalent gaming configuration. Samsung includes Game Mode among the controls intended for gaming, but menu names and available options differ between models. The mode is useful because it applies the monitor’s gaming signal path rather than a general-purpose picture profile; the exact latency behavior is model-specific and should not be represented as a universal number.

After enabling it, leave the monitor on the same input used by the console and verify that the setting is stored for that input. Some displays keep separate profiles for each HDMI socket. If the image changes unexpectedly, check whether Game Mode altered the available resolution or refresh choices, then reselect the highest valid combination.

Enable FreeSync or VRR when both sides support it

Why variable refresh helps

Samsung describes the problem directly: when game FPS does not match the monitor’s refresh rate, the result can be screen stuttering or screen tearing. With variable refresh, the display adjusts its update timing so frames can be presented individually instead of being forced into a fixed cadence. That can make uneven frame delivery look less disruptive, but it cannot create extra frames or guarantee a fixed frame rate.

Enable it on the monitor

In the Samsung menu, look for FreeSync, Adaptive-Sync, or a model-specific VRR control. Turn it on only if the manual states that the feature works over the HDMI input you are using. A setting intended for DisplayPort may not apply to a console connection.

Enable it on the console

Open the console’s screen or video-output settings and enable VRR when the console detects a compatible display. Keep the console’s resolution and refresh choices within the range shown as supported. If the console reports that VRR is unavailable, first check the HDMI port, cable, monitor input setting, and firmware or menu configuration rather than forcing an unsupported mode.

Test the result

Use a game scene with camera movement and fine vertical lines, such as railings or building edges. Look for a horizontal split in the image during a pan (tearing) or repeated uneven jumps (stutter). These observations are not a GTA VI benchmark; they simply confirm whether the synchronization path is active. If enabling VRR produces a blank screen, flicker, or an out-of-range message, return to the last known working refresh rate and consult the model’s documented VRR range.

Use the correct HDMI cable and port

Samsung states that FreeSync can use HDMI, while G-Sync requires DisplayPort, and recommends a certified compatible DisplayPort cable for supported high-resolution configurations. For a PS5 or Xbox Series X|S, use HDMI instead: select the Samsung input with the required bandwidth and a certified HDMI cable rated for that signal. The cable must meet the monitor and console requirements for the resolution and refresh combination you selected.

  • Connect the console directly to the monitor while troubleshooting; remove switches, capture devices, and receivers that may limit bandwidth.
  • Reseat both HDMI plugs, then power-cycle the console and monitor so they renegotiate the signal.
  • If one HDMI input works and another does not, compare the input specifications in the Samsung manual.
  • If the screen reports an unsupported signal, lower the refresh rate or return to the previous resolution before testing another cable.

A cable cannot raise a monitor’s maximum refresh rate. It can, however, prevent a capable monitor from receiving the mode it supports when the cable or intermediate device is below the required bandwidth.

Console setup sequence

  1. Turn off automatic experimentation: begin with the console and monitor powered off, then connect the HDMI cable directly.
  2. Open the console’s screen settings: select the Samsung’s native resolution if listed.
  3. Select the highest shared refresh rate: choose only a rate shown as supported at that resolution.
  4. Enable VRR: use the console’s VRR control after the monitor has FreeSync or its equivalent enabled.
  5. Check information screens: confirm the active resolution, refresh rate, HDR or other optional modes only if the monitor and console both report them as supported. Do not infer a mode from a game’s marketing materials.
  6. Launch the game: if GTA VI later provides multiple graphics modes, compare only the modes the game itself labels. The official material available before launch does not establish what those modes will be.

Diagnose tearing, stutter, and black screens

Visible horizontal tearing

  • Confirm that VRR or FreeSync is enabled on both the Samsung and the console.
  • Check that the cable is certified for the selected HDMI bandwidth and is plugged into the correct monitor input.
  • Return to the monitor’s native resolution and retest at the highest shared refresh rate.
  • If tearing remains while VRR is unavailable, use the console’s standard supported output rather than a forced custom mode. The monitor cannot synchronize a signal it does not support.

Uneven motion or repeated judder

  • Verify that the console is actually outputting the refresh rate you selected; a menu choice can revert after a resolution change.
  • Enable Game Mode and VRR where supported.
  • Inspect for an HDMI bottleneck, including an older port, an uncertified cable, or an intermediate device.
  • Remember that VRR reduces timing mismatch; it does not turn a low or unstable game frame rate into a high one.

Black screen or “out of range” message

  1. Wait for the console’s automatic video-recovery prompt, if it appears.
  2. If recovery does not appear, power off the console and monitor.
  3. Reconnect directly to the Samsung’s documented HDMI input.
  4. Restart at a standard supported resolution and refresh rate, then raise one setting at a time.
  5. Leave the last stable combination in place and check the Samsung manual before attempting another mode.

VRR option is missing

Check the exact model specification and HDMI input first. Some budget displays provide FreeSync only on a particular input or only within a defined resolution-and-refresh range. The console will hide VRR when the connected display, cable path, or active mode does not advertise compatibility.

How to compare budget Samsung displays for console GTA 6 use

If you are choosing between several displays, compare the complete signal path rather than buying on refresh-rate branding alone. For a console, HDMI support is the deciding interface because PS5 and Xbox Series X|S connect over HDMI.

Comparison axis Why it matters How to evaluate it
Refresh rate Higher supported refresh can make motion appear smoother when the console supplies matching frames. Check the rate at the monitor’s native resolution and over the HDMI input you will use.
VRR/FreeSync Variable timing can reduce tearing and stutter caused by a mismatch between FPS and refresh. Confirm HDMI support, not just a DisplayPort feature listing, and verify console compatibility.
Native resolution Matching the panel avoids unnecessary scaling. Record the exact pixel dimensions and the refresh rates available at that resolution.
HDMI version or bandwidth Insufficient bandwidth can limit the resolution or refresh mode delivered by the console. Use the model specification and identify which HDMI socket carries the required mode.
Game Mode behavior The gaming signal path may affect responsiveness, but behavior is model-specific. Confirm that Game Mode exists and note which picture controls or signal modes it changes.
Price A lower purchase price may come with a 60 Hz panel, limited HDMI bandwidth, or no VRR. Compare the specifications above before treating price as a value indicator.

There is no single “best” refresh number for every budget Samsung display. A correctly configured 60 Hz model is preferable to an incorrectly forced 120 Hz signal that drops out, scales unexpectedly, or disables synchronization.

What to check on launch day

Because GTA VI is not yet released, use a short validation checklist after installing the game or a system update:

  • Read the game’s own graphics or display options and record which modes it actually offers.
  • Check the console’s active output information after launching the game; some software can change output behavior.
  • Test a busy driving scene and a slow camera pan for tearing and uneven cadence.
  • Compare VRR on and off only at the same resolution and refresh rate.
  • If an update changes stability, repeat the cable and input checks before changing several settings at once.
  • Keep the Samsung model number, HDMI port, cable rating, resolution, refresh rate, and VRR state noted so you can reproduce a working setup.

Rockstar’s confirmed launch information covers PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S and the November 19, 2026 date; it does not guarantee a particular monitor mode. Final behavior can change through patches, so rely on the game and console menus for the active result rather than a pre-release expectation.
