For an RTX 5080 gaming PC, use your monitor’s native resolution at its highest refresh rate supported at that resolution, enable G-SYNC or G-SYNC Compatible if your display supports it, and turn on HDR when both the display and game support HDR. The right brightness, color mode and HDR adjustments depend on the monitor—not on the graphics card alone.
Set the monitor to its native resolution and highest supported refresh rate
The RTX 5080 does not decide which display modes your monitor can use. Those depend on the monitor, its connection and the selected resolution. Choose the display’s native resolution, then select the highest refresh rate Windows offers at that resolution. A monitor may support different maximum rates at different resolutions, so check the mode you intend to play at.

- In Windows, open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display.
- Select the monitor you want to configure.
- Choose the highest refresh rate listed for your intended resolution. If a rate has an asterisk, check its note: Windows may change the resolution when you select it.
NVIDIA’s G-SYNC setup guidance also recommends setting the display to its highest available refresh rate. If the expected rate is missing, verify the monitor’s supported modes and connection requirements before changing other settings.

Yes, if your monitor is G-SYNC or G-SYNC Compatible. NVIDIA describes G-SYNC as matching the monitor’s refresh rate to the GPU frame rate, reducing tearing and stutter. It is a variable refresh rate (VRR) feature; it does not mean every game will run at the monitor’s maximum refresh rate.

- Open NVIDIA Control Panel > Display > Set up G-SYNC.
- Enable G-SYNC or G-SYNC Compatible, then choose full-screen mode or windowed and full-screen mode. Choose the latter if you want VRR to apply to games and applications running in windows as well as full-screen games.
- Open Manage 3D settings and set Monitor Technology to G-SYNC or G-SYNC Compatible, as appropriate for your display.
NVIDIA’s Control Panel help explains the setup and display requirements. The RTX 5080 is newer than the Pascal-and-later GPU compatibility floor in that documentation, but your monitor still needs to support G-SYNC or G-SYNC Compatible. NVIDIA App may also expose display controls such as G-SYNC under its System tab; available controls can vary with app and driver versions.
Should HDR be on all the time?
Not necessarily. Turn on Windows HDR when your display supports HDR and you are using HDR content or a game with an HDR mode. Then calibrate and adjust the image using Windows and the monitor’s on-screen display (OSD). There is no universal brightness or contrast value that suits every monitor.

HDR behavior is display-specific. Microsoft notes that some monitor configurations can limit brightness in certified HDR modes, while a non-certified mode may trade color accuracy for brightness. NVIDIA’s RTX HDR uses peak-brightness information reported by the display’s EDID and can use values set through Windows HDR Calibration. Those differences are why a single global HDR brightness recommendation would be unreliable.

What to check when choosing or configuring a monitor
Compare the capabilities that determine the image and available modes, rather than treating “RTX 5080-ready” as a single monitor specification:
- Resolution and refresh rate together: Confirm the refresh rate available at the resolution you plan to use.
- VRR support: Check whether the monitor supports G-SYNC or G-SYNC Compatible, and review its VRR range.
- Panel and HDR implementation: Panel type, such as OLED or IPS, and the monitor’s HDR behavior affect the image; a label alone does not establish how it will look in your room.
- Inputs and mode requirements: Verify which input supports your intended resolution, refresh rate and HDR mode before changing cables or buying accessories.
As one time-specific example, NVIDIA’s January 2025 driver article listed the Alienware AW2725Q as a 27-inch OLED display with 3840 × 2160 (4K) resolution, HDR and a 48–240 Hz VRR range among newly validated G-SYNC Compatible monitors. That example illustrates useful comparison details; it is not a requirement or a recommendation for every RTX 5080 owner. Monitor specifications and validation lists can change, so check current manufacturer specifications and NVIDIA’s current compatibility information when shopping.
