Choose the Apple Studio Display XDR for 5K, mini-LED, 120Hz Adaptive Sync, and P3 plus Adobe RGB; choose the Apple Studio Display if 5K at 60Hz with P3 color is enough. These recommendations compare published specifications, not hands-on test results. Check your Mac Pro model, macOS version, and display-count needs before buying.
Best Mac Pro monitor: which one should you choose?
Among the two current Apple displays covered here, the Studio Display XDR is the feature-rich pick for HDR, motion, or workflows that use Adobe RGB as well as P3. The standard Studio Display is the simpler 5K option for general creative and office work where 60Hz and P3 meet your needs.

What monitor works with Mac Pro?
“Mac Pro” covers multiple generations. Apple’s current compatibility pages list both Studio Display models for Mac Pro (2023 and later); that does not establish compatibility for every older Mac Pro or graphics configuration. If you have an earlier model, confirm its exact graphics hardware, macOS version, and display documentation rather than relying on the connector alone.

- SIX-SPEAKER SOUND WITH SPATIAL AUDIO — Four force-cancelling woofers produce bold bass, and two high-performance tweeters deliver accurate mids and crisp highs. And Spatial Audio creates a sophisticated, cinematic soundstage in supported music, video, and games.
- SUPERPOWER YOUR STUDIO — Two Thunderbolt 5 ports let you connect high-speed accessories, daisy-chain up to four displays, and even fast-charge Mac laptops. And two USB-C ports are perfect for USB peripherals or charging your iPhone.
For the Studio Display XDR, Apple specifies macOS Tahoe 26.3.1 or later. Apple also says M1, M1 Pro, M1 Max, M1 Ultra, M2, and M3 Mac models support the display at up to 60Hz, not 120Hz. Check the exact Mac and system requirements if 120Hz matters; do not assume that a compatible connection guarantees the display’s maximum refresh rate.
Can I use a 5K display with Mac Pro?
Yes. Apple lists the 27-inch, 5120-by-2880 Studio Display and Studio Display XDR as compatible with Mac Pro (2023 and later). The XDR adds mini-LED backlighting, 120Hz Adaptive Sync, and higher published brightness figures; the standard model is a 60Hz P3 display, not an HDR equivalent to the XDR.

Apple says Mac Pro (2023) can support up to eight external displays simultaneously, but eight is not a promise that every display can run at its highest resolution and refresh rate at once. The supported combinations depend on resolution, refresh rate, and which ports are used. Apple’s configuration table includes Thunderbolt arrangements up to 6K at 60Hz or 4K at 144Hz, and certain HDMI arrangements up to 8K at 60Hz or 4K at 240Hz. The 8K/60Hz or 4K/240Hz HDMI case uses the bandwidth of two displays in its port group. Consult Apple’s Mac Pro display configuration table for the full set of combinations, especially for a multi-monitor setup.

How to connect a monitor to Mac Pro
- Check the display’s connection requirements. Apple advises consulting the display documentation to determine whether to use HDMI, Thunderbolt, or either, and which cable is appropriate.
- Match the cable to the Mac and display. Mac Pro’s Thunderbolt and HDMI ports support video output. The Studio Display includes a one-meter Thunderbolt 5 Pro cable; confirm the exact Mac Pro ports and display requirements before choosing a replacement or a different cable.
- Connect the highest-resolution display first. Apple’s Mac Pro setup guidance recommends this order when configuring multiple displays.
- Check the resulting display settings. Confirm that macOS detects the monitor and offers the resolution and refresh rate required for your setup. If an expected mode is unavailable, recheck the Mac model, macOS version, cable, and Apple’s supported multi-display configurations.
See Apple’s Mac Pro connection guide for connection guidance, along with the display maker’s documentation for model-specific requirements.
