Best modifier combinations for every squad role in Star Wars Zero Company

The strongest Zero Company builds match each Operator’s Talents to the job that Operator must perform in a particular mission. Use durability on Operators expected to draw fire, evasion or critical-hit tools on damage dealers, and Espionage or Thievery when a support specialist is also carrying your campaign economy. For a first playthrough, keep the default rules on Normal; Patch 1.2’s Campaign Modifiers are optional challenge rules, not universally superior settings.

Every Operator has three action points per turn, shared between movement, attacks, Call for Backup and Overwatch. A talent that keeps an Operator alive after spending those points can be as valuable as a damage increase. EA’s official squad guide also stresses that there is no single squad lineup that is best for every Tactical Mission: objective, enemy type and map geometry should determine who deploys.

This guide covers the eight standard roles, the ten recruitable Operator Talents listed by PC Gamer, and practical Campaign Modifier packages for normal, veteran and permadeath runs.

How to choose Talents in Zero Company

Operators are assembled from Talents, Specializations and Weapon Classes. Custom Operators allow more editing, while many features of Authored Operators are fixed; check what can actually be changed before planning a respec-heavy build. The official squad guide explains the system in detail at EA Help.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Start with the battlefield job rather than a favorite Talent. A front-line Assault or Heavy needs enough health, defense or damage prevention to remain exposed. A Gunslinger, Scoundrel or Sharpshooter usually benefits from avoiding the return volley or creating a short burst-damage window. A Medic or Scout may be more valuable when the same build also generates Intel or credits between missions.

  • Durability: A Life of Labor, Grit and, on suitable maps, Anticipation keep an Operator functional under focus fire.
  • Avoidance: Anticipation is particularly useful for mobile attackers and support Operators who must cross open ground.
  • Targeted burst: Cold-Blooded creates a guaranteed critical-hit opportunity, while The Bigger They Are… adds damage against elite and boss enemies.
  • Campaign economy: Thievery adds credits after a combat mission; Espionage adds Intel. These are strategic benefits rather than direct combat damage.
  • Map interaction: Sabotage is strongest when a mission gives you explosive objects to plan around, rather than on a map with few usable hazards.

The published Talent list contains The Bigger They Are…, Anticipation, Cold-Blooded, Taunt, A Life of Labor, Thievery, Sabotage, Espionage, Grit and Fortitude. The combinations below use the role recommendations and explain when to substitute a different option.

Best Talent combination for each role

Role Recommended combination Primary purpose Situational alternative
Assault A Life of Labor + Grit Health, defense and once-per-turn damage negation for close-range exposure Anticipation when evasion matters more than raw durability
Gunslinger Anticipation + Grit Survive after spending action points on attacks A Life of Labor for a sturdier baseline
Heavy Taunt + Grit Pull enemy pressure onto a durable Operator and withstand retaliation Anticipation on maps that reward evasion over threat control
Medic Anticipation + Espionage Protect the support role while adding post-mission Intel Thievery for credit-focused campaigns
Scoundrel Anticipation + Cold-Blooded Evade while flanking, then convert a planned opening into burst damage Grit for a safer, less damage-focused build
Scout Anticipation + Sabotage Survive forward positioning and exploit explosive objects Espionage or Thievery when campaign resources are the priority
Sharpshooter Cold-Blooded + The Bigger They Are… Guaranteed critical window plus extra damage to elite and boss targets Anticipation when the sniper is frequently exposed
Soldier A Life of Labor + Grit Reliable health, defense and damage prevention on an all-rounder Anticipation for an avoidance-oriented profile

Assault: A Life of Labor + Grit

Assault routinely works inside the enemy’s comfortable firing distance. A Life of Labor supplies +5 health and +1 defense, improving the baseline before incoming fire is calculated. Grit adds +2 health and one invulnerable stack once per turn, giving Assault a way to absorb or negate the most dangerous hit while closing or finishing a target. The pair is better for a mission that requires occupying a room or contesting an objective than a purely ranged map.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Replace one pick with Anticipation when the map has long sight lines, limited hard cover or movement-heavy objectives. In that situation, avoiding a hit can preserve more effective health than adding another defensive statistic.

Gunslinger: Anticipation + Grit

Gunslingers often spend their three action points attacking and repositioning, leaving less budget for a safe retreat. Anticipation’s evasion-oriented protection covers the return fire, while Grit’s health and once-per-turn invulnerable stack provide a second defensive layer when an enemy still connects. This is a balanced damage build rather than a maximum-burst setup.

A Life of Labor is the alternative when the Gunslinger is acting as a steady mid-range shooter behind dependable cover. It raises the floor of every exchange, whereas Anticipation pays off most when the Operator is moving between firing positions.

Heavy: Taunt + Grit

Heavy is the clearest home for Taunt. Drawing enemy attention is useful only if the Operator can survive the attacks that Taunt provokes, which is why Grit belongs beside it. The combination turns threat control into practical protection for less durable squadmates: enemies are encouraged to shoot the Heavy while the rest of the squad gains time to flank, revive or complete an objective.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use Anticipation instead of Taunt when enemy behavior cannot be usefully redirected, or when the battlefield rewards repeated movement between cover rather than holding a central position. Taunt is less attractive on missions where pulling additional fire onto Heavy would expose the whole squad to overlapping attacks.

Medic: Anticipation + Espionage

A Medic loses value when forced out of position or incapacitated before a revive. Anticipation helps the Operator cross dangerous tiles and remain available to heal, while Espionage awards +5 Intel after a combat mission. That Intel makes the Medic a campaign-economy asset without sacrificing the combat protection needed by a support role.

Choose Thievery instead when the campaign’s immediate bottleneck is credits rather than Intel. Thievery provides +150 credits after a combat mission; the best choice depends on which upgrades or operations you are trying to fund, not on a universal ranking between the two resources.

Scoundrel: Anticipation + Cold-Blooded

Scoundrel wants to operate at an exposed angle, often after moving around cover or into a flank. Anticipation reduces the risk of that positioning, and Cold-Blooded creates a guaranteed critical-hit window that can convert the flank into a decisive elimination. Plan the turn so the critical opportunity happens after the Scoundrel reaches the intended target; spending all three action points on movement can leave no attack to exploit the Talent.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Grit is the safer substitute for a campaign in which Scoundrel is being used as a general skirmisher rather than a dedicated finisher. It trades some burst potential for health and a once-per-turn damage-negation effect.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.

Scout: Anticipation + Sabotage

Scouts are natural forward operators. Anticipation protects them while they identify routes and firing angles, and Sabotage rewards planning around explosive objects. On a map with clustered containers, generators or other usable hazards, a Scout can prepare a route that makes the environment part of the attack rather than relying only on weapon damage.

Sabotage is situational by design. If the objective has few explosive objects, choose Espionage for +5 Intel or Thievery for +150 credits after combat. Those alternatives retain value on every mission, while Sabotage’s payoff depends on the map’s available objects and the time you can spend setting up the detonation.

Sharpshooter: Cold-Blooded + The Bigger They Are…

This is the most direct single-target pairing. Cold-Blooded supplies a guaranteed critical-hit window; The Bigger They Are… adds +2 damage against elite and boss enemies. Use the critical window on the highest-value target that the bonus applies to, especially when removing one elite prevents a second wave of attacks.

Sharpshooters still need a safe firing lane. Replace one offensive Talent with Anticipation on maps where the sniper must relocate frequently, where cover is unreliable, or where enemy pressure can reach the back line. A slightly lower peak is preferable to losing the Operator before the next objective.

Soldier: A Life of Labor + Grit

Soldier’s broad role makes the durable pairing dependable: A Life of Labor contributes +5 health and +1 defense, and Grit contributes +2 health plus one invulnerable stack once per turn. The result can anchor a mixed squad when you do not know whether the mission will demand holding ground, crossing open terrain or trading fire at medium range.

Anticipation is the better alternative when the Soldier will spend most turns moving between cover or when the mission’s geometry makes raw health less reliable than avoiding attacks altogether.

How the combinations change by mission and roster

Objective and battlefield layout

Holding an objective, escorting a unit or surviving several enemy turns favors A Life of Labor, Grit and Taunt because the squad must remain in place under pressure. A demolition or infiltration objective with clear explosive objects raises Sabotage’s value. Long corridors and open courtyards increase the value of Anticipation, especially for Medics, Scouts and Sharpshooters who cannot afford to be pinned away from cover.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Enemy type

Elite and boss encounters are where The Bigger They Are… earns its slot. Pair it with Cold-Blooded when one high-value kill can change the encounter. Against ordinary groups, a defensive Talent may produce more total damage over the mission by keeping an Operator active for additional turns.

Action-point economy

Because movement, attacks, Call for Backup and Overwatch all draw from three action points, avoid builds that assume an Operator can both reposition and attack every turn. Anticipation and Grit are valuable partly because they protect the turns in which an Operator has already spent points on movement or support. A Medic who survives with one action point left can still matter; a defeated Medic contributes nothing to the squad’s action economy.

Custom versus Authored Operators

Custom Operators are the easiest place to apply these pairings exactly. Authored Operators may have fixed features, so treat the table as a target profile rather than a promise that every Talent can be swapped freely. Confirm the available edit and respec options before committing to a campaign with locked respec rules.

Campaign Modifiers in Patch 1.2

Patch 1.2, published October 15, 2026, adds optional Campaign Modifiers to the Difficulty Settings when starting a new campaign. They activate after the tutorial. The EA patch notes present these as ways to customize challenge; they do not replace the default difficulty. Start with the default Normal rules if you are learning the systems, then add one coherent package for a specific goal.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Challenge goal Modifiers What changes Best use
Build-lock challenge Locked Talent Respec + Locked Tactical Respec + Locked Weapon Respec Early choices become persistent across the campaign Players who want commitment and deliberate roster planning
Accuracy-pressure challenge Assist Shots Can Miss + Enemies Can Critically Hit Backup attacks are no longer guaranteed and enemies can produce critical hits Veteran runs where cover and positioning should matter more
Advantage-denial challenge No Advantage from Assist Attacks + Reduced Advantage from Damage Assist attacks and damage generate less snowballing advantage Players who want to reduce cascading bonuses
Permadeath challenge Instant Death An Operator defeated in Tactical Mission combat dies permanently; Operations injuries are excluded The strongest loss rule, for players who accept campaign-ending roster consequences
Measured veteran run Locked Tactical Respec + Assist Shots Can Miss Planning is persistent and backup-shot results have tactical variance A step up from default rules without permanent death

Build-lock package

Use all three lockouts when the challenge is roster commitment rather than harsher combat math. Decide which Operators are front-line anchors, resource supports and elite-target specialists before leaving the tutorial. A Life of Labor + Grit on Assault or Soldier and Anticipation + Espionage on Medic are forgiving early decisions; Cold-Blooded + The Bigger They Are… is a more specialized commitment for Sharpshooter.

Accuracy-pressure package

Assist Shots Can Miss removes the certainty normally associated with backup fire, while Enemies Can Critically Hit increases the cost of standing in poor cover. Favor Anticipation on mobile attackers and supports, keep Heavy or another durable Operator available to absorb pressure, and avoid treating an assist attack as the sole plan for finishing a target.

Advantage-denial package

No Advantage from Assist Attacks and Reduced Advantage from Damage limit the snowball created by chaining support fire and damage. This package rewards deliberate target selection and makes defensive Talents more attractive because the squad cannot rely on rapidly compounding offensive advantages.

Permadeath package

Instant Death permanently kills an Operator defeated in Tactical Mission combat; injuries during Operations are excluded. It is already the strongest loss rule by itself. Add the three lockouts only when you deliberately want a severe run in which a bad tactical decision can remove a carefully built Operator and prevent convenient rebuilding.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The official gameplay guide describes permadeath as optional and says it is worth considering for players who want that experience: StarWars.com gameplay guide. In practice, protect your support chain first: a Medic with Anticipation, a durable Heavy with Taunt + Grit, and a Scout who can remain mobile are more valuable than chasing maximum damage on every slot.

Measured veteran package

Locked Tactical Respec plus Assist Shots Can Miss creates planning pressure without the permanent roster loss of Instant Death. It is a useful intermediate setting: you must live with tactical specialization choices, but a missed assist shot does not automatically erase an Operator from the campaign.

Should you use a single “best” squad?

No. EA’s guidance is explicit that no single lineup is best for every Tactical Mission. Build around the next objective instead of forcing all eight role recommendations into every deployment. Bring Heavy or Assault when the route requires holding enemy attention, Medic when the mission is likely to inflict attrition, Scout when the map offers forward routes or explosive objects, and Sharpshooter when elite targets have clear firing lanes. Gunslinger and Scoundrel fill mobile damage roles, while Soldier supplies a flexible durable slot.

Swap resource Talents according to the campaign’s needs. Espionage’s +5 Intel and Thievery’s +150 credits are awarded after a combat mission, so they matter most when the Operator is deployed consistently and survives. A support build that generates resources but is repeatedly left behind has no practical economic advantage.

Quick selection checklist

  • Identify whether the Operator must hold ground, flank, provide support, scout ahead or kill an elite target.
  • Check how much open ground, hard cover and explosive terrain the objective provides.
  • Reserve A Life of Labor and Grit for roles that will regularly absorb fire; use Anticipation when movement and exposure are the real danger.
  • Pair Cold-Blooded with The Bigger They Are… when a guaranteed critical window can be spent on an elite or boss.
  • Choose Espionage or Thievery for a support Operator only when the resulting Intel or credits solve a real campaign bottleneck.
  • On a first campaign, keep default Normal rules. Add lockouts, accuracy pressure or Instant Death only when you understand how three-action-point turns and respecs work.
  • If using Authored Operators, verify which Talents and features are editable before selecting a locked-respec package.

Bottom line

For dependable role performance, use A Life of Labor + Grit on Assault and Soldier, Anticipation + Grit on Gunslinger, Taunt + Grit on Heavy, Anticipation + Espionage on Medic, Anticipation + Cold-Blooded on Scoundrel, Anticipation + Sabotage on Scout, and Cold-Blooded + The Bigger They Are… on Sharpshooter. Treat those as starting profiles, then adjust for the objective, enemy roster, map geometry and the Campaign Modifiers you deliberately enabled.
