What “controller support” actually means

Full support (Tier 1)
Android Hire uses “Full (Tier 1)” for games in which the controller operates menus, loadouts, settings, and gameplay. You can usually launch a save, change options, enter a lobby, and play without putting the phone down. Dead Cells, GRID Autosport, and Stardew Valley are the clearest examples in this guide.
Gameplay only (Tier 2)
“Gameplay only (Tier 2)” means the pad controls the action but touch is still required for menus, lobbies, shops, or other interface screens. This is common in competitive free-to-play games. It is not a defect if you know what to expect, but it matters when you want a console-like experience.
Supported, but with unspecified depth
Some listings confirm controller support without documenting whether every menu is navigable. Consider these games compatible, not automatically full-support. Check the developer’s notes and test the title during the store’s refund window where applicable.

Best full-support games
Dead Cells
Dead Cells is the safest all-round recommendation for action fans who want a controller to feel natural from launch to combat. Its fast platforming, dodge timing, ranged attacks, and weapon switching benefit from analog movement and physical triggers. The mobile version is identified as full support, so menus and settings do not force a return to touch controls.
Apple also lists Dead Cells+ in its Apple Arcade controller collection. The exact edition, save system, and availability depend on whether you are using the standalone store release or Apple Arcade.
GRID Autosport
GRID Autosport is the strongest choice for serious mobile racing. A controller gives you progressive steering and throttle control rather than the binary feel of tilt or screen buttons. It is classified as full support, including navigation outside races. The game is a premium purchase rather than a free-to-play service, so it suits players who want a complete racing package without energy timers or ad-driven progression.
Stardew Valley

Best free mobile games that work with a controller
Call of Duty: Mobile
Call of Duty: Mobile is the leading free choice for players who want precise aiming, movement, and vehicle control. A physical stick is easier to manage than virtual controls during multiplayer firefights, although matchmaking and some interface actions may still involve touch. Controller users can be placed in controller-oriented matchmaking environments, so expect a different competitive pool from touch-only players.

Verify the current Android or iPhone listing before installing because live-service updates can alter compatibility, regions, and supported devices.
Genshin Impact
Genshin Impact is a controller-friendly open-world RPG on supported mobile configurations. Android Hire reports Android support from version 5.5, released March 26, 2025. On Android, the option is off by default: open the game’s settings, find the control-type input, and switch from touch to controller after the pad is paired. The game remains free-to-play, with online account and service requirements.

Asphalt Legends is an accessible free racing choice, but it does not behave like a traditional simulator until you change its driving assistance. Disable TouchDrive in the control settings if you want direct steering, throttle, and braking from the controller. Leaving TouchDrive enabled can make the pad feel less responsive because the game continues to automate major driving decisions.

Check each title separately on Android and iPhone. A controller that works on one operating system or game version may not be enabled on the other, and a game can add or remove support in an update.

Wreckfest
Wreckfest is a premium demolition-racing option listed among controller-friendly games. Its driving model rewards analog steering and trigger control, while physical buttons make camera and vehicle functions easier to reach than on a touchscreen.
eFootball
eFootball supports a controller for match play, but Android Hire notes that pad support is limited in menus. Keep touch input ready for team management, navigation, or other interface tasks.
Apple Arcade racing and sports games
Apple’s controller collection includes Asphalt 8: Airborne+ and NBA 2K26 Arcade Edition. These are separate Apple Arcade editions, not interchangeable with every free or standalone release. iPhone and iPad
Apple’s App Store uses a Controller Supported badge for compatible games. Open the game’s App Store page and look for that label in the information area before downloading. The badge confirms support, but it does not always explain whether menus are fully navigable.

Android phones and tablets
Google Play does not provide one universal controller-support badge equivalent to Apple’s label. Check the game’s Play listing, the developer’s support page, or Google’s gamepad-focused collections. If menu behavior matters, look for explicit wording about navigation rather than relying on a generic “controller compatible” statement.
Android Hire’s 2026 verification covered 78 Android and iPhone games. Its stated testing scope covered 22 entries with an Xbox controller, DualSense, and a USB-C clip-on controller; that is the publisher’s testing scope, not an independent test performed for this article.

How to connect an Xbox or PlayStation controller
Both Android and iPhone can pair supported Xbox and PlayStation controllers over Bluetooth. Exact menu names vary slightly by operating-system version, but the process is generally:
- Charge the controller and turn it on.
- Hold its pairing button until the status light begins flashing. On a DualSense, hold the Create and PS buttons together; on an Xbox controller, hold the small pairing button.
- Open your phone’s Settings, choose Bluetooth, and enable Bluetooth.
- Select the controller name when it appears in the available-device list.
- Launch a game that supports controllers and open its control settings if the game does not switch automatically.
A clip-on mobile controller can connect by USB-C or Bluetooth, depending on the model. USB-C models usually avoid wireless pairing and may draw power from the phone; Bluetooth models offer broader physical separation but need their own charging routine. Confirm that your phone’s port, case, and operating system are compatible before buying.
Cloud gaming and remote play on a phone
Cloud gaming expands the catalog beyond native mobile releases. Xbox states that cloud gaming runs on supported phones and tablets, while remote play streams games installed on an Xbox console. Cloud play requires an Xbox Game Pass subscription, and the available games, plans, regions, and features change over time.
Microsoft recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi or mobile data at 20 Mbps or higher for mobile cloud gaming. That figure is a recommendation from Microsoft, not a guarantee of perfect latency. A wired or nearby 5 GHz connection, a clear wireless channel, and a controller connected directly to the phone can reduce additional delay.
- Check that your phone, region, subscription, and chosen game are eligible for the current cloud catalog.
- Pair the controller before opening the streaming app or browser session.
- Use 5 GHz Wi-Fi where possible and pause large downloads on the same network.
- Start with a single-player game to evaluate latency before entering a competitive match.
- If the stream stutters, test a closer access point, mobile data, or a lower stream quality setting where available.
Choosing a mobile controller
Clip-on controllers
Clip-on designs hold the phone between two control grips, making them convenient for native games and cloud sessions. Check the supported phone width, case clearance, USB-C alignment, and whether the grips block speakers or charging ports.

Full-size wireless controllers
An Xbox or PlayStation pad is a good choice if you already own one and want the same layout across console and mobile. You will need a separate stand or clip to hold the phone, and Bluetooth battery management becomes part of the setup.

Troubleshooting controller problems
The game does not detect the controller
- Pair the controller before launching the game, then restart the game.
- Disconnect it from another phone, tablet, console, or computer that may be claiming the Bluetooth connection.
- Install pending operating-system and game updates.
- Check the game listing for platform-specific support; Android and iPhone compatibility are not interchangeable.
Gameplay works but menus do not
This is expected for Tier 2 or unspecified support. Use touch for menus, shops, and lobbies, or choose a full-support title such as Dead Cells, GRID Autosport, or Stardew Valley.
Buttons are mapped incorrectly
Open the game’s control settings and select the correct layout, then check whether the controller is using an alternate profile. Remapping is available on some hardware, but a game may ignore system-level mappings.
Racing feels assisted or unresponsive
In Asphalt Legends, disable TouchDrive for direct steering. In any racer, check sensitivity, dead-zone, steering-assist, and vibration settings before concluding that the controller is faulty.
Cloud play feels delayed
- Move to 5 GHz Wi-Fi or test a strong mobile-data connection.
- Keep the phone closer to the router and stop competing downloads or video streams.
- Use a wired USB-C controller connection if your hardware and phone support it.
- Remember that network latency cannot be fixed by changing button mappings.
