Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThe easiest successful build is an integrated mini PC such as the ASUS NUC 13 Pro, while a Thin Mini-ITX board is the better choice when you need a socketed processor, replaceable memory and storage, or a custom upgrade path. The original NES outer envelope is approximately 256 × 203.2 × 88.9 mm (10.1 × 8 × 3.5 inches), but the usable cavity is substantially smaller after shell walls, standoffs, cartridge-door hardware, button mechanisms, ventilation openings, rear connectors and cable-bend space are accounted for. Build a cardboard or CAD mock-up before buying components.
What can realistically fit inside an original-NES-size shell?
The dimensional reference for the original NES lists an outer width of 256 mm, depth of 203.2 mm and height of 88.9 mm. Those are external dimensions, not a guaranteed motherboard compartment. The shell’s molded walls and ribs consume space, and the front cartridge mechanism, power and reset buttons, rear connector area and ventilation openings compete with the computer. A board that fits on paper can still fail when a 24-pin cable needs to turn, an I/O connector must reach a cutout, or a fan needs an unobstructed intake.

Use the 256 × 203.2 × 88.9 mm figure as a bounding box only. Measure the exact shell you own, because revisions, replacement shells and internal hardware can differ. Reserve a service corridor around removable memory, storage and the cooler, and model the bend radius of every cable. The practical design target is a low, wide layout rather than filling every cubic millimetre.
- Height is usually the limiting dimension. Conventional desktop coolers and full-height expansion cards quickly exceed the available vertical space.
- Depth is consumed at both ends. Front mechanisms occupy the cartridge side, while rear I/O, power input and display or USB cables need clearance at the back.
- Width is valuable but discontinuous. A board may fit beside the cartridge bay while its heatsink or memory modules collide with a wall or post.
- Airflow needs volume. A sealed cavity around a cooler is not equivalent to a ventilated case, even if the cooler itself is short.
Two architectures that make sense
Integrated NUC route: the simplest mechanical project
An ASUS NUC 13 Pro configuration is listed at 117 × 112 × 37 mm in its shorter form, with another configuration measuring 117 × 112 × 54 mm. The 37 mm version leaves substantially more vertical room for an intake, an exhaust opening and mounting hardware inside an NES-size shell. ASUS specifies a 90 W adapter for i3 configurations and a 120 W adapter for i5 and i7 configurations.

This route packages the processor, board, cooling solution and much of the power regulation into one tested enclosure. You do not need to choose a socket, memory-slot orientation or a separate CPU heatsink. The trade-off is less component freedom: the processor is integrated, the original enclosure’s connectors will not line up automatically, and the external power brick must be positioned outside the shell or accommodated in a separate compartment.
When searching for parts, the clearest product phrase is ASUS NUC 13 Pro mini PC. Confirm the exact chassis height, processor configuration, memory arrangement and adapter included with the listing you intend to buy; the 37 mm and 54 mm variants have very different clearance requirements.
Thin Mini-ITX route: more choice, more engineering
Intel’s Mini-ITX design guide describes the form factor as enabling chassis in the 4–8 litre range and defines a “Tiny PC” as a chassis below 4 litres. It also documents a 20 mm component-height limitation in relevant Thin Mini-ITX zones and a 19 V internal input. The guide describes external adapters ranging from approximately 100 W for Atom systems to more than 200 W for a feature-rich 65 W design.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A Thin Mini-ITX build lets you select a modern socketed processor, SO-DIMM memory where the board requires it, M.2 storage and a cooler matched to the socket. It also gives you a path to replace individual components. In exchange, you must solve the mechanical stack-up, DC input, front-panel wiring, rear I/O and thermal path yourself. Intel’s guide dates from 2012, so treat its dimensions and electrical guidance as a design reference and verify the manual for the specific modern board.
Why a standard Mini-ITX board is not automatically suitable
Standard Mini-ITX boards measure 170 × 170 mm, but that footprint alone does not prove fit. Socket height, DIMM orientation, M.2 heatsinks, the rear I/O shield, 24-pin and 8-pin power plugs, and cooler overhang can all exceed the shell’s usable envelope. A board can be 170 mm square and still be impossible to install because a connector points into a wall or because the cooler occupies the cartridge-door area.
Thin Mini-ITX is preferable when the vertical clearance above the board is below the envelope of a conventional tower-style cooler. Check the board drawing for component-height zones rather than relying on the marketing name “mini-ITX.”

Component comparison
| Architecture | Published physical information | Processor approach | Power arrangement | What it solves | What you must design |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ASUS NUC 13 Pro, shorter configuration | 117 × 112 × 37 mm | Integrated CPU | 90 W adapter for i3 configurations; 120 W adapter for i5/i7 configurations | Small, pre-integrated board, cooler and regulation | Mounting, shell cutouts, ventilation, cable routing and external-adapter placement |
| ASUS NUC 13 Pro, taller configuration | 117 × 112 × 54 mm | Integrated CPU | Adapter rating depends on the configuration; ASUS lists 90 W for i3 and 120 W for i5/i7 configurations | Same integration benefits with additional internal expansion room | More demanding vertical clearance and airflow planning |
| Thin Mini-ITX system | Board dimensions vary; Intel documents 20 mm component-height limits in relevant zones | Socketed CPU selected by the builder | 19 V input; Intel describes external adapters from about 100 W to over 200 W depending on system design | Replaceable CPU, memory and storage choices | Board fit, cooler, DC-DC conversion, wiring, mounting, I/O and thermal design |
The table gives published reference values, not a fit certification. Neither architecture has been physically tested in every NES shell revision, so verify with a mock-up.

Do not start with a shopping cart. Start with a dimensional model that includes the parts people normally forget.
- Strip the shell to its usable cavity. Remove the original electronics and identify ribs, posts, cartridge guides, button plungers, the cartridge-door hinge and any shields that must remain.
- Measure three clearances. Record the maximum unobstructed width, depth and height, then record the smaller clearances at the front mechanism and rear I/O area. Use the smaller local dimensions for component placement.
- Mark no-go zones. Draw the cartridge opening, button assemblies, screw bosses, rear connector openings and any area needed to close the lid without pinching wires.
- Add cable envelopes. A straight plug is not the full size of a cable. Allow room for HDMI, USB, Ethernet, audio, 19 V input and front-panel leads to turn without stressing their connectors.
- Model service access. Leave a path to remove the lid, reach the power button, disconnect the adapter and replace memory or storage. A component that only fits after permanent assembly is difficult to maintain.
- Build a full-size mock-up. Use cardboard, foam board or a 3D-printed block representing the board, cooler, power module and adapter connectors. Close the shell and verify every cutout before drilling or buying a second set of parts.
Motherboard and processor choices
When the integrated board wins
Choose the shorter NUC configuration when the priority is a predictable, compact installation. Its 117 × 112 mm footprint occupies a small fraction of the NES plan area, and the 37 mm height leaves space above and below for a controlled air path. The integrated cooler and board reduce the number of mechanical interfaces that can fail.
It is particularly suitable when you want a general desktop, emulation system or living-room computer without a discrete graphics card. The design still needs storage, memory and an I/O strategy, but those are easier to package than a socketed processor and separate cooler.
When Thin Mini-ITX is worth the extra work
Use Thin Mini-ITX if you need a socketed CPU, want to choose a processor with a specific power limit, or expect to replace the board later. Prefer a board with SO-DIMM slots when full-size DIMMs would exceed the height envelope. Inspect the board’s connector map before purchase: side-facing connectors are usually easier to route than plugs that rise directly into the lid.
Processor selection should begin with the cooling and power budget, not with the highest model supported by the socket. Intel’s design guidance gives examples from roughly 100 W adapters for low-power Atom systems to over 200 W for a 65 W feature-rich design; that spread shows why the board, CPU, memory, storage and startup load must be measured as a system.

Low-profile cooling that can work
Noctua NH-L9i-17xx reference cooler
The Noctua NH-L9i-17xx datasheet specifies a height of 37 mm and describes it as suitable for extremely slim cases. Its small footprint is intended to preserve RAM and PCIe compatibility and access to near-socket connectors on tightly packed mini-ITX boards. It is for Intel LGA1700-family sockets, so it must be matched to a compatible board and processor.
A 37 mm cooler does not make every LGA1700 CPU suitable. Confirm the processor’s power limits, the board’s firmware behavior and the cooler’s supported thermal load. A low-profile heatsink can transfer heat only as fast as the case can remove it.
Design the air path, not just the heatsink
Intel’s guidance calls for deliberate choices about inlet and outlet locations, CPU thermal-solution orientation and system-fan placement. In an NES shell, use the original ventilation pattern only if it provides a genuine path through the new hardware; otherwise add discreet openings that preserve structural strength.
- Place an intake where it receives relatively cool room air rather than recirculated exhaust.
- Provide an exhaust opening on the opposite side or at the rear so heated air does not pool above the cooler.
- Keep the cooler fan and any case fan from fighting each other with opposing flows.
- Prevent cable bundles from covering the fan inlet or pressing against blades.
- Allow dust cleaning and fan replacement without destroying the shell.
Using the NCASE S5M as a reference, not a guarantee
The NCASE S5M specification allows a CPU cooler up to 66 mm high, supports SFX and SFX-L power supplies, does not support liquid cooling and allows one 2.5-inch drive depending on component selection. Those allowances illustrate the trade-off between cooler height, power-supply volume and drive mounting, but the S5M is not an NES shell. A true NES enclosure can be tighter in critical zones, so its specifications cannot be used as proof that a component will fit.
Power: choose the electrical architecture early
External 19 V adapter
An external AC adapter feeding a board’s 19 V input keeps mains voltage, transformer heat and bulky wiring outside the shell. This is usually the cleanest approach for Thin Mini-ITX. Route the low-voltage cable through a protected rear opening, add strain relief and leave enough bend radius that the plug is not loaded sideways.
For the NUC route, use the adapter specified for the exact configuration: ASUS lists 90 W for i3 systems and 120 W for i5/i7 systems. These are adapter ratings for those configurations, not a universal recommendation for every build.

Internal SFX or Flex-ATX supply
An internal SFX or Flex-ATX supply avoids an external brick but adds mains heat, cable bulk, mounting points and safety considerations. The supply can consume the space needed for airflow or storage. It is practical only when the mock-up shows a clear, ventilated compartment and a safe path for the AC inlet.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsSizing the adapter or DC-DC stage
Measure actual system draw at idle, sustained load and startup, then add margin for transient demand and future peripherals. Do not infer adapter wattage from CPU TDP alone: memory, storage, USB devices, fans, display interfaces and conversion losses also consume power. A DC-DC module must be rated for the input voltage, continuous output, peak output and cooling conditions inside the shell.
Storage, memory and expansion
Storage mounting
M.2 storage is generally easier to package than a 2.5-inch drive because it adds little volume and no separate cable pair. Check whether the board’s M.2 heatsink rises into the lid or blocks a neighboring connector. If you use a 2.5-inch drive, provide a rigid mounting surface and route both power and data cables away from the fan path.
Memory clearance
Use SO-DIMM memory where the chosen Thin Mini-ITX board requires it. Even when a board accepts full-size DIMMs, verify module height and insertion direction. The cooler and memory must be removable without taking the entire motherboard out of the shell.
Expansion and external ports
A NES-size build rarely has room for a full-length add-in card. Treat PCIe availability as a board feature rather than an assumption that a graphics card will fit. Plan HDMI or DisplayPort, USB, Ethernet, audio and the power connector together, because the rear I/O shield and cable bends often determine the final board position.

Do not rely on adhesive alone for a board or power module. Use existing bosses where possible, or add an insulating mounting plate with threaded inserts. Maintain clearance beneath the PCB for solder joints and conductive shell hardware. If the original shell is electrically conductive or contains shielding, prevent accidental contact with the board.

For rear I/O, choose one of three approaches: align the board’s native ports with new cutouts, use short extension cables to a custom rear panel, or retain the board inside and expose only the ports the finished system needs. Extensions simplify alignment but add signal and mechanical failure points. Keep high-speed display and USB cables short and well supported.
Front buttons can be reused as momentary switches if their travel and electrical ratings match the motherboard header. Otherwise install a small, independent switch behind the original button cap. Test the switch with the lid open before final assembly.
A practical build sequence
- Choose the architecture. Select the short NUC configuration for integration simplicity, or select a Thin Mini-ITX board after confirming its dimensions, connector locations and 19 V input requirements.
- Freeze the power plan. Reserve space for the external adapter cable or model the internal supply, then determine the adapter or DC-DC rating from measured system demand and startup margin.
- Mock up the board and cooler. Include the actual heatsink, fan frame, memory modules, M.2 heatsink and power plugs rather than using a bare board outline.
- Locate airflow openings. Mark intake and exhaust zones that remain open when the lid is installed. Check that the fan does not pull air from the power adapter or exhaust back into the intake.
- Plan I/O and controls. Position rear cutouts, cable extensions, front buttons and status indicators before drilling the shell.
- Install and test outside the shell. Boot the board, update firmware, verify memory and storage, and measure idle and sustained-load power with the intended adapter.
- Assemble temporarily. Install the hardware with the shell closed but not permanently modified. Check temperatures, fan noise, connector strain and access to the power button.
- Finish the shell. Add strain relief, insulating barriers, permanent mounts and trimmed openings only after the temporary test passes.
Common failure modes and fixes
The lid will not close
Find the highest point, which is often a power plug, M.2 heatsink, memory module or fan frame rather than the CPU cooler. Reposition the board, choose a lower-profile part or move the connector to an extension cable. Do not compress the lid against a PCB or fan.
The system overheats after a few minutes
Check whether the intake and exhaust are both open and whether the fan direction matches the intended path. Measure temperatures with the shell closed, not just on a workbench. If airflow is correct, reduce processor power limits, select a lower-power CPU or enlarge the openings; a larger heatsink without an exhaust path will not solve trapped hot air.
The adapter resets under load
Verify the adapter’s voltage and current rating, then compare it with measured startup and sustained demand. Include conversion losses and USB-powered accessories. Replace an undersized adapter or DC-DC module with a unit that has documented continuous and peak ratings.
Rear cables cannot be connected
Move the board before cutting the shell. A port can be electrically accessible but mechanically unusable if the plug hits the wall or cannot achieve its required bend radius. Short right-angle extensions can help, but test signal reliability and provide strain relief.
Servicing requires complete disassembly
Rework the mounting order so storage, memory and the power connector are reachable with the lid removed. If a component must be replaced regularly, do not bury it beneath a permanent bracket or cable bundle.
