For most groups, choose Better MC (BMC4) on Forge for Minecraft 1.20.1. It keeps the familiar survival loop while adding exploration, structures, mobs and bosses. Choose Prominence II: Hasturian Era if your group wants a story campaign on Fabric, or All the Mods 9 if you want a large, long-running sandbox for ambitious projects.
The decisive issue is compatibility, not a download ranking: every player must use the same modpack release, Minecraft version and loader as the server. BMC4 and All the Mods 9 use Forge; Prominence II uses Fabric. A Forge client cannot join a Fabric server simply because both packs target Minecraft 1.20.1.

Start with the loader and exact Minecraft version
Forge and Fabric are different mod loaders. A pack built for one is not interchangeable with a pack built for the other. Before anyone downloads anything, agree on the exact combination you will run:
#1 Best Overall
- BMC4: Forge, with listings for Minecraft 1.20.1 and 1.20.
- Prominence II: Fabric on Minecraft 1.20.1. Its 1.20.1 release is not a Forge build.
- ATM9: Forge, with listings for Minecraft 1.20.1 and 1.20.
For a new shared world, 1.20.1 is the clearest target because all three recommendations have a 1.20.1 release. Do not assume that two releases with the same pack name are interchangeable: a 1.20 file, a 1.20.1 file and a later Minecraft build can contain different mods and dependencies.
Match the group’s preferred pace
- Pick BMC4 when players have different experience levels or want to explore, build a base and fight occasional bosses without following a prescribed campaign.
- Pick Prominence II when the group enjoys reading quests, unlocking RPG-style progression and moving through a common narrative. It works best when players agree to advance through the same campaign rather than splitting into unrelated objectives.
- Pick ATM9 when at least one player enjoys learning systems, documenting recipes and planning a world that will remain active for a long time. Its breadth is an advantage for builders and technical players, but it asks the group to make more decisions about what to do next.
Use popularity as a signal, not a guarantee
The three packs have very large CurseForge download totals, but those numbers measure downloads on that platform at the snapshot date. They do not prove that a pack is the easiest to run, the most stable for your particular computer or the best match for your friends. Loader compatibility and play style should decide first.
Better MC (BMC4): the safest all-round choice
What you get
Better MC BMC4 is the default recommendation for a mixed group because it extends ordinary survival rather than replacing it with a single specialist objective. The pack is built around exploration and discovery, with better structures, additional mobs, bosses and more reasons to travel. Players can still establish a home, gather resources and choose their own pace, while the added content gives a group something to find together.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThat balance matters in multiplayer. A newcomer can contribute through farming, building or basic exploration, while experienced players can pursue harder encounters. The pack does not require everyone to understand a long technology chain before the group can enjoy its first session.
Technical profile
- Loader: Forge.
- Supported listings: Minecraft 1.20.1 and 1.20.
- Recommended shared-world target: select the same 1.20.1 BMC4 release for every client and the server.
- Publisher team: LunaPixelStudios.
- Popularity snapshot: the CurseForge listing reported more than 18.6 million downloads on October 14, 2026.
Choose BMC4 when
- Your group includes both casual and experienced players.
- You want exploration and upgraded encounters without a mandatory storyline.
- You expect players to join at different times and pursue separate projects.
- You want the least complicated recommendation among the three packs.
Potential drawbacks
The freedom that makes BMC4 accessible can also leave a group without a shared objective. Agree on a starting area, a first expedition or a base project before launching the server. If your friends specifically want a quest-driven RPG, Prominence II provides a clearer structure.
Prominence II: Hasturian Era: the campaign option
What you get
Prominence II: Hasturian Era is the choice for a group that wants Minecraft to feel like a cooperative RPG campaign. It includes quest lines and a shared story, so the party has an obvious reason to travel, complete objectives and progress together. This structure can solve the common multiplayer problem in which everyone logs in but has no agreed goal.
Campaign packs require a little more social coordination than open-ended survival. Decide whether the group will read quest text, wait for everyone before major story steps and keep important progression areas accessible. If one player rushes far ahead, others may miss the intended sequence even though they can still work on side activities.
Technical profile
- Loader: Fabric.
- Minecraft target: 1.20.1.
- Forge availability: there is no Forge 1.20.1 build of this pack.
- Relevant release: the CurseForge file page lists version 4.0.0hf for 1.20.1; the Modrinth listing also identifies a 1.20.1 Fabric build.
- Author: ElocinDev.
- Popularity snapshot: the CurseForge listing reported more than 13.0 million downloads on October 14, 2026.
Choose Prominence II when
- Your friends enjoy quests, lore and a common progression path.
- You want Fabric specifically, or your existing server infrastructure is already Fabric-based.
- The group can agree to play through major story beats together.
Potential drawbacks
It is the least flexible of the three recommendations if players want completely independent goals. More importantly, selecting a Forge profile by mistake will not work: the 1.20.1 build is Fabric. Confirm the loader in the launcher profile and on the server before troubleshooting anything else.

- The classic UNO card game builds fun on game night with a Minecraft theme.
- UNO Minecraft features a deck and storage tin decorated with graphics from the popular video game.
- Players match colors and numbers to the card on top of the discard pile as in the classic game.
- The Creeper card unique to this deck forces other players to draw 3 cards.
- Makes a great gift for kid, teen, adult and family game nights with 2 to 10 players ages 7 years and older, especially Minecraft and video game fans.
All the Mods 9: the long-term sandbox
What you get
All the Mods 9 is designed for a broad, sustained sandbox. Its large collection of systems gives a group room to build substantial bases, automate resource production, explore different mechanics and keep adding goals after the first few sessions. The pack also has a large community guide base, which is valuable when a recipe, machine or progression step is unfamiliar.
ATM9 suits groups that enjoy choosing their own specialization. One player can focus on construction, another on automation and another on exploration, then combine the results in a shared base. The trade-off is cognitive load: there are more systems to learn and more possible directions than in a lighter survival pack.
Technical profile
- Loader: Forge.
- Supported listings: Minecraft 1.20.1 and 1.20.
- Recommended shared-world target: use one exact 1.20.1 ATM9 release for every client and the server.
- Author: ATMTeam.
- Popularity snapshot: the CurseForge listing reported more than 13.6 million downloads on October 14, 2026.
Choose ATM9 when
- Your group expects a world to remain active for weeks or months.
- Players enjoy technical systems, automation, documentation and ambitious construction.
- You want several viable specialties rather than one shared campaign route.
Potential drawbacks
ATM9 can be a poor first modpack for a group that wants immediate simplicity. Establish a shared storage convention and a short list of early priorities, otherwise players may spend the first evening comparing systems instead of playing together. Treat any hardware advice found in secondary articles cautiously: no authoritative memory requirement is established here, so test the exact release on the machines and server you will use.
Set up a reliable multiplayer installation
1. Agree on one release before downloading
- Choose BMC4, Prominence II or ATM9.
- Choose Minecraft 1.20.1 unless your group has a specific reason to use the pack’s 1.20 listing.
- Write down the full pack name, release number and loader. For example, “Prominence II, 1.20.1, Fabric” is a meaningful specification; “Prominence II 1.20” is not.
Do this in your group chat before anyone creates a world. It prevents one player from installing a similarly named or newer profile and assuming the server is at fault.

- Now Minecraft lovers can play a special version of UNO!
- Same as Basic UNO but features Minecraft characters and includes special Creeper rule card. Draw this card and the other players have to draw three more cards from the pile!
- The goal is to get rid of all the cards in your hand.
- First player or team to 500 wins.
- When you're down to one card, don't forget to yell "UNO"!
2. Install through the pack’s listed launcher source
- Open the launcher or modpack manager where the selected pack is listed.
- Search the exact pack name and verify the author or publisher team shown in the listing.
- Select the agreed Minecraft version and release, then install the profile.
- Check that the profile reports the expected loader: Forge for BMC4 or ATM9, Fabric for Prominence II.
- Launch once without joining a server. This lets the launcher finish downloading dependencies and exposes local installation errors before the multiplayer session.
Prominence II can be installed from a listing that identifies Fabric; do not substitute a Forge profile because the Minecraft version number looks the same.
3. Prepare the server with the identical pack
- Use the server files or server installation method supplied for the exact release you selected.
- Install the same Minecraft version and loader as the clients.
- Apply the same modpack release and configuration files. Do not add or remove individual mods casually; a “small” change can create a different dependency set.
- Start the server once, allow it to generate its files, then stop it cleanly before importing an existing world.
- Keep a backup of the world before changing pack releases or loader versions.
Exact client/server matching is the safest general multiplayer rule. If a player sees a missing-mod, mismatched-version or incompatible-loader error, compare the release number and loader first rather than reinstalling random files.
For a hosted Java server, Godlike.Host provides a game panel with a built-in mod installer and updater, one-click modpacks, custom server-pack uploads and SFTP access.
4. Test with one player before inviting everyone
- Connect one client to the fresh server.
- Travel a short distance, place and break blocks, open inventories and test any early quest or structure relevant to the pack.
- Stop and review the server log if the connection fails or the world closes unexpectedly.
- Only then invite the rest of the group and begin the shared world.
This short test catches a wrong loader, incomplete server files and configuration mismatches while the world is still disposable.
Best Value
Troubleshooting the problems groups encounter most often
“Incompatible modded server” or a missing-mod message
- Compare the exact Minecraft version on the client and server.
- Compare Forge versus Fabric. Prominence II must be Fabric; BMC4 and ATM9 must be Forge.
- Compare the pack release number, not just the pack’s name.
- Remove manually added mods and test the unmodified pack profile.
The launcher starts vanilla Minecraft
Open the profile details and verify that the modpack instance, not the ordinary Minecraft installation, is selected. If the loader is absent, recreate the profile from the official pack listing rather than copying a few mod files into a vanilla folder.
One player crashes while others can join
Have the affected player compare the installed release, loader and configuration with a working player. A crash log can identify a dependency or memory problem, but changing several settings at once makes the cause harder to isolate. Reinstall the exact profile if the files differ.
The group cannot agree on what to do
- For BMC4, choose a base location and a first exploration target.
- For Prominence II, agree to follow the opening quest sequence together.
- For ATM9, assign an initial storage area and one small project per player before expanding into advanced systems.
Names and versions that can cause a wrong download
“BMC – BetterMC” is not Better MC BMC4
A discontinued 1.20.1 Forge pack called “BMC – BetterMC,” authored by Jack_853, is a different project. It is not affiliated with the Better MC series and will not receive updates. Search results that show “BMC” are therefore not enough to identify the current BMC4 pack; verify the publisher team and the listing’s release information.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Do not substitute newer packs for a 1.20 setup
Better MC BMC5 targets Minecraft 1.21.1 on NeoForge, so it does not satisfy a 1.20.1 requirement. All the Mods 10 likewise targets Minecraft 1.21.1 on NeoForge and is not an ATM9 replacement for a 1.20 group. Installing either one changes both the Minecraft version and the loader.
Why several popular names are not recommendations here
Secondary listings for Vault Hunters, Create: Astral and Cobblemon did not establish a clean, verified 1.20.1 choice. Pixelmon Reforged was shown for 1.16.5 or 1.20.2 on Forge and 1.21.1 on NeoForge, not as an unambiguous 1.20.1 option. Those packs may be worth investigating for a different brief, but they should not be presented as verified answers to this one.
Decision guide
| If your group says… | Choose | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| “We want normal survival, but with more to discover.” | Better MC BMC4 | Exploration additions, structures, mobs and bosses without a required campaign. |
| “We want quests and a story we can play together.” | Prominence II: Hasturian Era | Shared campaign and quest lines on Fabric 1.20.1. |
| “We want a world with many systems and long-term projects.” | All the Mods 9 | Large Forge sandbox with a broad community guide base. |
| “Our server is already Fabric.” | Prominence II | It is the listed Fabric choice among these three; BMC4 and ATM9 are Forge. |
| “We want 1.20.1 but found a newer 1.21.1 pack.” | Stay with a verified 1.20.1 pack | Newer Minecraft and NeoForge releases are a different compatibility target. |
Final recommendation
Install Better MC BMC4 for Forge 1.20.1 unless your group has a clear reason to choose differently. It is the most forgiving shared-survival starting point. Select Prominence II: Hasturian Era for a cooperative story and quests, remembering that its 1.20.1 build is Fabric. Select All the Mods 9 for a broad, long-running Forge sandbox, and plan for more systems to learn. Whichever pack you choose, record the exact release and make every client and the server use that same combination before the first world is created.
