Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFor frequent off-road travel, the Toyota 4Runner is the strongest choice in this group. The 2026 Honda Passport is the better compromise when smooth road manners and everyday comfort matter more than difficult trails. The 2026 Subaru Outback fits drivers who want standard all-wheel drive, generous clearance and moderate trail ability in a car-like package. Towing capacity, required equipment and off-road hardware vary by powertrain and trim, so choose from the trailer and routes you actually use rather than from a generic “off-road SUV” label.
At a glance
The table uses U.S.-market figures published by the manufacturers. Tow ratings are maximums for properly equipped vehicles; they do not by themselves prove that a particular loaded trailer is safe for your vehicle, passengers and cargo.

Start with the route, not the badge
“Off-road” can mean a maintained gravel road, a muddy forest track or a rocky route where underbody contact and traction loss are expected. Those uses place very different demands on a vehicle.

Gravel, snow and unpaved access roads
For occasional unpaved access roads, ride comfort, visibility, tire choice and all-wheel-drive behavior may matter more than maximum articulation. The Passport and Outback are aimed at this kind of mixed use. They can keep a family comfortable on pavement while handling washboard surfaces and mild ruts when driven within their limits.

Moderate trails
Moderately challenging routes add deeper ruts, steeper grades and loose surfaces. The Outback is described by the Associated Press’ Edmunds roundup as capable in moderately challenging off-road situations, while its Wilderness version is the more trail-focused expression of the model. The Passport can manage dirt roads and occasional trails, but the available comparison does not establish it as the better choice for repeated difficult routes.
Frequent or technical off-road travel
Repeated trail use rewards suspension articulation, traction-management systems, underbody protection, suitable tires and clearance working together. Edmunds identifies the 4Runner as the better pick for frequent off-road trips. Its four-wheel-drive SR5 already has useful articulation and clearance, and more specialized grades add hardware and traction technology. Select the grade according to the terrain instead of assuming every 4Runner has the same equipment.
- List the steepest approach, departure and breakover situations on your normal routes.
- Identify surfaces that routinely become slippery, such as mud, snow, sand or wet rock.
- Check whether the trim includes the traction and underbody equipment your route requires.
- Choose tires rated for the surface; a capable drivetrain cannot compensate for unsuitable tires.
Toyota 4Runner: the off-road-first choice
Why it leads for trail use
The 4Runner is the clearest recommendation when off-road travel is the primary requirement. Edmunds’ evaluation highlights the four-wheel-drive SR5’s useful suspension articulation and ground clearance, giving the base four-wheel-drive configuration a foundation for real trail work. TRD Off-Road, Trailhunter and TRD Pro move further toward specialized use with additional hardware and traction technology. Exact equipment is grade-specific, so compare window stickers and build sheets rather than relying on the model name.

The turbocharged 2.4-liter powertrain carries the highest tow rating listed for the 4Runner in the Honda comparison, while the hybrid rating is slightly lower. Both figures are maximum ratings for properly equipped U.S. vehicles. Confirm the hitch, cooling, wiring, payload and trailer-brake requirements for the exact year and grade before attaching a trailer.
The daily-driving compromise
Edmunds found the 4Runner less comfortable than the Passport over ordinary roads. That does not make it unsuitable as a commuter; it means the vehicle’s trail-oriented priorities can be felt in ride quality and road manners. If most of your miles are on pavement and your trails are occasional, test-drive the 4Runner back-to-back with the Passport and Outback on broken pavement, not only on a smooth dealership loop.

Who should buy it
- Drivers who visit demanding trails regularly rather than once or twice a year.
- Owners willing to choose an off-road grade and accept a firmer, less car-like road experience.
- Buyers whose trailer requirement fits the selected engine, equipment and payload limits.
Honda Passport: the comfort-and-capability compromise
Where it fits best
The 2026 Passport is suited to buyers who spend most of their time on pavement but want confidence on dirt roads and occasional trails. Edmunds’ comparison describes it as riding more smoothly over bumps and feeling more car-like than the 4Runner. That distinction matters when the SUV is also a daily commuter, family vehicle or long-distance road-trip tool.
Towing equipment is not optional
Honda’s comparison lists a 5,000-pound maximum tow rating and notes that towing requires accessory equipment. The rating therefore cannot be treated as a promise that every Passport can tow that weight straight from the showroom. Ask the dealer to identify the required hitch, wiring, cooling or other accessories for your exact configuration, then verify the combined payload of passengers, cargo, tongue weight and accessories.
How much trail use is realistic
The available Edmunds assessment places the Passport below the 4Runner for frequent off-road trips, while still considering it appropriate for dirt roads and less severe use. Avoid using a tow rating or a marketing description as a substitute for route clearance: a vehicle can pull a trailer well on pavement and still be the wrong tool for rocky trails.
Who should buy it
- Drivers who value a smoother ride and car-like handling every day.
- Families that occasionally reach campsites or recreation areas by dirt road.
- Owners whose loaded trailer and payload needs fit within the 5,000-pound maximum and the required accessory setup.
Subaru Outback: standard AWD for moderate adventures
Everyday drivetrain and clearance
Subaru describes the 2026 Outback with standard all-wheel drive and up to 9.5 inches of ground clearance. Those are useful starting points for snow, gravel and uneven access roads. Clearance alone does not establish trail ability: tire grip, suspension travel, traction programming, body protection and the driver’s route choice still determine what the vehicle can safely cross.
Choosing the engine
The 2.5-liter Outback has the lower tow rating in the Honda comparison, while the 2.4-liter turbo version reaches the higher figure; Subaru’s own page also states up to 3,500 pounds. Treat those as engine-dependent limits, not a universal Outback specification. Check the certification label and owner’s information for the exact vehicle, and include trailer tongue weight in the vehicle’s payload calculation.

Wilderness and route expectations
Subaru identifies Wilderness as the Outback’s upgraded off-road-oriented version. It is the logical place to begin if your routes go beyond gravel and maintained dirt, but the available sources do not provide a complete, apples-to-apples set of approach, departure or breakover angles for comparison with the other vehicles. Plan around the obstacles you actually encounter and leave recovery margin rather than relying on a single clearance number.
Who should buy it
- Commuters who want AWD all the time and carry bikes, camping gear or pets.
- Drivers whose trails are moderate rather than highly technical.
- Buyers who can accept lower towing limits than the 4Runner or Passport in exchange for car-like packaging and standard AWD.
Compare towing correctly
A maximum tow figure is only the first filter. A trailer’s loaded weight, tongue weight, passengers, luggage and aftermarket equipment all count against the vehicle’s limits. The heaviest trailer your friend tows is not a useful benchmark unless the vehicles and loading are comparable.
- Weigh the trailer as used. Include water, batteries, propane, tools, bicycles and every item you normally carry. Use the loaded figure, not the empty brochure weight.
- Check the exact SUV’s certification label. Record the gross vehicle weight rating, rear-axle rating and payload for the specific trim and options.
- Calculate tongue weight. The tongue, hitch hardware and passengers consume payload even when the trailer remains below the headline tow rating.
- Confirm factory or approved equipment. For the Passport, Honda explicitly says accessory equipment is required for towing. Verify the hitch, wiring, cooling provisions and any trailer-brake requirements before purchase.
- Match the powertrain. The 4Runner and Outback figures vary by engine or hybrid system. Do not apply one grade’s rating to another.
- Inspect the route. A trailer that is acceptable on level pavement may be unsuitable for a steep, narrow or deeply rutted trail. Check turning room, departure clearance and recovery access.
- Leave operating margin. Running at the absolute maximum leaves less capacity for heat, elevation, headwinds, passengers and cargo. Stay within every applicable rating, not merely the largest number in an advertisement.
Daily-driving differences that matter
Ride and handling
Edmunds’ comparison gives the Passport the clear comfort advantage over the 4Runner, describing a smoother ride and more car-like feel. The Outback also uses a car-based, wagon-like format that many drivers find easy to place in traffic and comfortable for long trips. The 4Runner’s tradeoff is accepting more truck-like behavior in return for stronger trail credentials.
Cabin and cargo decisions
The supplied comparisons do not provide a consistent set of cargo-volume measurements, rear-seat dimensions or payload figures, so there is no defensible ranking on those specifications here. Bring the child seats, coolers, recovery gear or kennel you actually use to a test drive. Measure the cargo opening and check whether the rear seats fold in the configuration you want.
Noise, visibility and fatigue
Spend enough time at highway speed to assess wind and tire noise, steering effort and seat support. A vehicle that is pleasant for a 20-minute drive can become tiring on a two-hour trip to the trailhead. Likewise, evaluate hood visibility and camera coverage before assuming a trail-oriented trim will make every obstacle easy to see.

Pick by your actual use case
Frequent trail runner with a trailer
Start with the 4Runner. Choose the powertrain and off-road grade that satisfy both your trailer’s loaded weight and the obstacles on your routes. Verify payload and hitch equipment before signing; the model’s maximum tow figure does not eliminate those checks.
Family vehicle with occasional campsites
Start with the Passport if ride comfort and everyday manners are priorities. It is intended for dirt roads and occasional trails, and its listed towing ceiling covers many moderate recreational trailers when the required accessories and payload calculations work out.
Snow, gravel and moderate trails every week
Consider the Outback, especially a Wilderness configuration if its additional off-road equipment matches your terrain. Its standard AWD and stated clearance suit mixed weather and unpaved access, but its engine-dependent tow rating may rule it out for a heavier trailer.
Large trailer is the non-negotiable requirement
Compare the loaded trailer and payload first, then eliminate vehicles that cannot meet both limits with margin. In this group, the 4Runner’s turbocharged configuration has the highest listed maximum, the Passport occupies the middle position, and the Outback’s rating depends strongly on engine choice. None of those headline figures replaces a vehicle-specific weight calculation.
Pre-purchase and pre-trip checklist
- Write down the exact model year, trim, engine and drivetrain; do not rely on a generic model page.
- Obtain the vehicle’s payload label and the manufacturer’s towing information for that configuration.
- Ask which hitch, wiring and brake-control components are required, particularly for the Passport.
- Inspect the tires’ load and terrain ratings and budget for replacements suited to your routes.
- Check clearance and underbody protection at the points where your trail has previously caused contact.
- Test-drive on broken pavement and at highway speed before choosing a trail-focused grade.
- Load representative passengers and equipment during a final payload calculation.
- For a used vehicle, inspect hitch mounts, recovery points, skid plates, suspension components and evidence of water or impact damage.
- Carry recovery equipment appropriate to the route and travel with a second vehicle when conditions or local rules warrant it.
What the published comparisons do—and do not—establish
The Honda Information Center pages are official U.S. manufacturer comparisons, so their towing figures should be checked against the current vehicle documentation and viewed with Honda’s commercial interest in mind. The Outback clearance and towing statements come from Subaru’s official 2026 page. Edmunds’ qualitative findings are republished by the Associated Press.
The Passport-versus-4Runner Edmunds article was published September 3, 2025. It compares a 2025 4Runner with the redesigned 2026 Passport, so it is not a same-model-year instrumented comparison. Use its ride and capability observations as an evaluator’s perspective, not as a controlled laboratory ranking of every trim.
The available material does not establish comparable fuel economy, insurance or maintenance costs, complete off-road geometry, payload limits across all trims, or real-world towing performance for all three vehicles. Those items can change the buying decision and must be verified for the precise model and equipment you are considering.
