For most solo webcasters, choose between two sensible setups: the Shure MV7+ if you want a close-positioned dynamic microphone with USB-C today and an XLR upgrade path later, or the Audio-Technica AT2020USB+ if you want a straightforward USB condenser with built-in headphone and mix controls for a reasonably quiet desk environment.

Neither microphone can guarantee clean audio by itself. Your result depends on connector and operating-system compatibility, distance from your mouth, room reflections, gain settings, and headphone monitoring. The specifications below come from the manufacturers’ documentation; no independent head-to-head listening test or universal “best” ranking was established, so use the decision guide rather than treating one model as superior in every room.

Quick decision: which webcast microphone fits your setup?

Choose this approach Why it fits Check before buying
Shure MV7+ Dynamic cardioid design for close speech, direct USB-C operation, XLR output for a future mixer or interface, headphone monitoring, and onboard digital processing. You must be comfortable speaking close to the microphone and should confirm USB-C cable, computer, mobile-device and software compatibility.
Audio-Technica AT2020USB+ USB condenser with a 20–20,000 Hz stated response, headphone level and mix controls, USB power, and an included tripod desk stand. It is best suited to a reasonably controlled room. Its manual lists older operating-system requirements, so verify current support with the manufacturer.
USB first Fastest path for a computer-based webcast: connect the microphone, select it in your conferencing or streaming application, and monitor through headphones. Confirm the connector, cable data support, available USB port or adapter, and whether your application permits separate input and output devices.
XLR upgrade path Lets you move from direct USB to an audio interface or mixer without replacing the MV7+. An XLR connection requires compatible interface or mixer hardware, an appropriate cable, gain adjustment, and potentially more desk space.

A cardioid pattern means the microphone is most sensitive toward the front and rejects more sound from the rear than from the sides. It does not automatically remove keyboard noise, traffic, fans, or room echo. Placement and room treatment remain decisive.

Shure MV7+: best fit for close-voice webcasting and future expansion

What the manufacturer documents

Shure describes the MV7+ as a professional-quality USB dynamic microphone for close-mic applications that require vocal intelligibility and a balanced tone. Its user guide lists a unidirectional cardioid pattern, USB-C and XLR connectors, a 3.5 mm headphone monitor output, 16- or 24-bit conversion at 48 kHz, and a 50 Hz–16 kHz frequency response.

Get the desired level via monitoring volume control when gaming recording. Smooth mic gain knob on the PC microphone gaming has some resistance to the point, easily for audio attenuation or boost presence to less post-production audio. (Only available for USB connection)

The USB signal path includes selectable or configurable processing features documented by Shure: Auto Level, a denoiser, popper reduction, EQ or tone controls, reverb, compressor, limiter, and a high-pass filter. These are manufacturer feature descriptions, not independent measurements of how much noise or room sound the microphone removes. Shure’s guide also describes a voice-isolation approach but does not quantify its performance in particular rooms.

When it makes sense

  • Solo presenter at a desk: Position the microphone close to your mouth and speak toward its front. Close placement raises your voice relative to distant room sound.
  • Changing production needs: Start over USB-C, then connect the same microphone to an XLR interface or mixer if you later need hardware routing or multiple microphones.
  • Live monitoring: Plug headphones into the 3.5 mm monitor output so you can hear clipping, excessive processing, fan noise, or a loose connection before the audience does.

Important limitations

Dynamic construction does not guarantee silence in a noisy room, and the cardioid pattern is not a substitute for positioning. If the microphone is several feet away, you will increase the proportion of reflected sound and background noise. The documented 50 Hz–16 kHz response is a specification, not a promise that every voice will sound equally natural in every setup.

Audio-Technica AT2020USB+: best fit for a simple USB desk condenser

Documented specifications and controls

Audio-Technica’s official manual describes the AT2020USB+ as a permanently polarized condenser with a cardioid pattern. The manual lists a 20–20,000 Hz frequency response, USB power, 16-bit conversion at 44.1 or 48 kHz, a headphone output, headphone level control, and a mix control that balances the computer playback signal against the microphone signal. A tripod desk stand is included.

The mix control is useful when you need to hear both your own voice and program audio without relying entirely on software monitoring. The headphone level knob changes listening volume; it does not change the signal sent to the webcast. Set your application’s input gain separately and watch its meters while speaking at your normal presentation level.

Great computer recording mic for gamers/streamers/youtubers focus on the main source and reduces background noise. The streaming microphone does the job well for broadcast ,OBS and teamspeak.

When it makes sense

  • Controlled desk environment: A condenser can capture detailed speech, but it also hears more of the room if you leave it far from your mouth or place it near reflective surfaces.
  • USB-only workflow: It is powered over USB and does not require a separate interface for a basic computer setup.
  • Tripod convenience: The included stand lets you start without a boom arm. Keep the stand on a stable surface and avoid touching the desk during a live session.

Compatibility caution

The manual’s operating-system compatibility statements refer to older platforms. Do not treat that list as current certification. Before purchase, check the manufacturer’s current support information for your operating-system version, USB implementation, conferencing or streaming application, and any mobile adapter you plan to use.

USB versus XLR for a webcast

USB workflow

USB sends a digital signal directly to your computer or compatible device. It minimizes hardware and is usually the quickest way to begin. The trade-off is that the microphone’s built-in converter and controls define much of the signal path. You also need a reliable data-capable cable and an operating system that recognizes the device.

  1. Connect the microphone to a USB port with the correct connector and a data-capable cable.
  2. Open your webcast, meeting, or recording application’s audio settings and select the microphone as the input.
  3. Choose headphones as the monitoring output if you want to hear your voice without sending it back through speakers.
  4. Speak at your normal loudness while watching the application’s level meter. Lower input gain if peaks reach the clip zone.

XLR workflow

XLR is an analog connection. The microphone feeds an audio interface or mixer, which supplies gain and converts the signal for the computer. This route is useful when you need multiple microphones, hardware routing, physical faders, or a longer-term studio setup. It adds cost, cables, power and another device to configure. The MV7+ supports this path; the AT2020USB+ manual documents USB connectivity rather than an XLR output.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which connection should you start with?

Use USB when one person is speaking and you want the fewest failure points. Choose the MV7+ specifically if preserving an XLR option matters. Select an XLR setup from the beginning when your production already includes a mixer or interface and you understand gain staging.

  • Positionable design: Pivot the mic in relation to the sound source to optimize your sound quality thanks to the adjustable desktop stand and track your voice in real time with no-latency monitoring

Room, placement and pickup: the part specifications cannot solve

Place the microphone close enough

Start with the capsule roughly a hand’s span from your mouth, then adjust while monitoring. Speaking across the front rather than directly into it can reduce explosive “P” and “B” sounds. Keep the microphone just outside the camera frame if necessary, but do not move it so far away that you must raise gain dramatically.

Control reflections

Hard walls, bare desks and windows reflect speech back into the capsule. Move away from a wall, place the microphone on a stable surface, and use ordinary soft furnishings in the room to reduce reflections. A cardioid pattern helps prioritize the front of the microphone; it cannot distinguish a desirable voice from an unwanted reflection arriving from that same direction.

Manage background sources

  • Turn off or move fans, air purifiers and loud computer exhaust where possible.
  • Keep keyboards and tapping surfaces behind the microphone’s least-sensitive rear direction, while remembering that rejection is not total.
  • Close doors and windows during the webcast if outside noise is intermittent.
  • Use denoising or a high-pass filter conservatively. Aggressive processing can make speech sound thin, metallic or unstable.

Step-by-step setup for a reliable webcast

  1. Confirm the hardware path. Decide USB-C direct connection or XLR through an interface. Check the port on your computer, the cable connector at both ends, and whether an adapter is required.
  2. Update and verify support. Install the current device software or driver instructions supplied by the manufacturer when applicable. Confirm your operating-system version and webcast application’s supported audio devices. Treat older compatibility lists, especially those in the AT2020USB+ manual, as historical guidance until current support is verified.
  3. Mount securely. Use the MV7+ on a stable mount appropriate to its thread or use the AT2020USB+’s supplied tripod. Keep the stand isolated from objects that transmit desk bumps.
  4. Set the speaking position. Aim the front of the cardioid microphone toward your mouth and keep a consistent distance. Put the capsule slightly to one side if direct plosives are a problem.
  5. Connect headphones. Use the MV7+’s 3.5 mm monitor output or the AT2020USB+’s headphone output. Disable speaker playback to prevent acoustic feedback.
  6. Select the input in software. In your conferencing or streaming application’s audio page, choose the microphone explicitly rather than leaving the operating system on an ambiguous default.
  7. Set level with real speech. Read a representative sentence at presentation volume. Adjust input gain until normal peaks leave headroom; do not set levels using a whisper or a loud test shout.
  8. Balance monitoring. On the AT2020USB+, use the mix control to blend computer playback with your voice. On the MV7+, monitor through the headphone output and adjust the application’s playback balance as needed.
  9. Apply processing sparingly. If using the MV7+’s Auto Level, denoiser, popper reduction, EQ, compressor, limiter or high-pass filter, change one setting at a time and listen for artifacts. Save a known-good baseline before experimenting.
  10. Record a private test. Capture at least 30 seconds with the same camera position, application and room conditions as the live webcast. Listen for clipping, hum, echo, delayed monitoring, keyboard noise and intermittent USB disconnects.
  11. Check the audience path. Verify that the application is using the intended microphone, not a laptop microphone or webcam, and that any platform-level mute control is off before going live.

Troubleshooting common webcast problems

The audience hears a laptop microphone

Open the webcast application’s audio settings and select the external microphone by name. Check the platform’s mute state and run its input test. Some applications revert to a built-in microphone after a USB reconnect.

Audio is distorted or clips

Reduce input gain while speaking at your normal loudness, then repeat the test recording. A limiter can reduce peaks but cannot restore a clipped recording. Also check whether two software gain stages are both amplifying the signal.

The voice sounds distant and echoey

Move closer to the microphone, aim the cardioid front correctly, and reduce reflective surfaces between you and the capsule. Raising gain from across the room increases room sound along with speech.

There is a delayed or doubled voice

Use headphones and disable speaker playback. If your application offers software monitoring, turn it off when using the microphone’s direct headphone monitor, or use only one monitoring path.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

USB is not detected

Try a different data-capable cable and another port, remove an unpowered hub, and reconnect before launching the webcast application. Then confirm the operating system sees the device and reselect it inside the application. For mobile use, verify that the adapter supports audio peripherals and provides adequate power.

Background noise remains after processing

Lower the noise at the source, move the microphone closer, and check its rear orientation before increasing denoising. The MV7+’s documented denoiser and voice-isolation features are processing tools, not a measured guarantee of silence in every room.

How to choose without an invented “best” ranking

  • Choose the MV7+ when USB-C convenience, close-mic speech and an eventual XLR interface are all important.
  • Choose the AT2020USB+ when you want a USB condenser, supplied tripod and physical headphone/mix controls, and your room is reasonably quiet and non-reflective.
  • Reconsider both if you cannot place a microphone near your mouth, need several microphone inputs immediately, or have not confirmed compatibility with your current device.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need phantom power for either microphone?

Not for a direct USB connection. The USB paths provide the power and conversion required by these models. Phantom-power requirements become relevant only when using an XLR microphone and interface; the MV7+ can use XLR, while the AT2020USB+ manual cited here documents USB operation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use one microphone for both a webcast and local recording?

Yes. Select the microphone as the input in the webcast application and in your recording software, but test both applications first because some operating systems permit only one program to control an audio device at a time.

Is a condenser always clearer than a dynamic microphone?

No. Clarity depends on voice, distance, room reflections, gain and processing. The AT2020USB+ is a condenser and the MV7+ is a dynamic; their types alone do not establish a universal quality winner.

Can I connect the MV7+ to a phone or tablet?

Possibly, but the exact USB-C or adapter arrangement, operating-system support and available power must be verified for that device. Test recognition and recording before relying on it for a live event.

Should I leave denoising and compression enabled all the time?

Use them only after a dry test recording. Mild processing can help level consistency or unwanted low-frequency noise, while excessive settings can remove natural speech detail or create audible pumping.
