Use the cloth to remove loose dust, apply or spread cleaner, detail frames and edges, and buff small missed spots. Use the squeegee to pull the main film of liquid off the glass in smooth, overlapping passes. This division of work is more reliable than asking one cloth to absorb an entire pane or trying to scrub wet glass with a dry squeegee.
A glass-specific microfiber weave, low lint, washable construction, and a clean, flexible blade matter more than a fashionable brand name. The available manufacturer specifications and cleaning procedures identify useful selection criteria, but they do not establish one universally best brand, price, or current retailer ranking.

Start with one glass-dedicated microfiber cloth and one hand squeegee. Keep a second dry cloth available if you clean several panes, because a cloth that has collected grit or cleaner can redeposit marks.

- Hand squeegee: removes most of the wet solution and suspended soil in a controlled stroke.
- Bucket or spray bottle: holds a modest amount of cleaner so each section can be completed before it dries.

This arrangement also limits lint. The cloth is not forced to absorb all the liquid, and the rubber blade does not have to wipe a dry, dusty surface.

How to choose a microfiber cloth for glass
Look for a glass-specific, low-lint weave
Microfiber cloths vary in pile, density, edge construction, and intended surface. A cloth marketed for glass, windows, mirrors, or chrome is generally a better starting point than a thick general-purpose dusting towel. You want fibers that lift soil without leaving visible threads or a fuzzy film on smooth glass.
Kärcher’s Premium MF Cloth Shine is an example of a product specified for glass, windows, mirrors, and chrome. Its listed dimensions are 400 × 400 mm, and a pack contains five cloths. The material is stated as 85% PET and 15% PA. Kärcher positions it as streak-free and lint-free when used as directed.
Size and handling
A 400 × 400 mm cloth is large enough to fold into several clean faces. Folding gives you a fresh working section without dropping the cloth on a dirty sill. Smaller cloths can be easier around divided panes, handles, and tight corners, while larger cloths cover broad picture windows faster.
Do not judge absorbency by thickness alone. A plush towel may hold more liquid but can also drag, shed, or leave a heavier damp trail on glass. For the final pass, a smooth glass cloth that glides with little pressure is usually easier to control.
Reusable construction and washing limits
Washable cloths reduce waste and let you keep a clean rotation. Kärcher states that its Premium MF Cloth Shine can be washed at up to 60 °C and can deliver approximately 500 wash cycles when its care instructions are followed. That figure is a manufacturer estimate, not a guarantee for every laundering routine or household.
Follow the cloth maker’s temperature and detergent guidance. Residue from fabric softener, oily laundry products, or heavily soiled loads can transfer back to glass. Kärcher also warns that high dryer temperatures can shorten the cloth’s service life. Air-drying or using the permitted low-heat setting is safer than treating the cloth like a bath towel.

A general-purpose towel still has a role, but assign it to frames or sills rather than the last polishing pass on the pane. Keep glass cloths away from greasy kitchen loads and abrasive debris.
How to choose a window squeegee
The rubber blade is the critical part
A squeegee should leave a continuous line of contact with the glass. A blade that is nicked, hardened, curled, or contaminated will skip and create parallel wet lines no matter how good the cleaner is. Inspect the edge under bright light before starting and replace it when damage or persistent streaking remains after cleaning.
Choose a handle that lets you keep the blade square to the pane without twisting your wrist. For ordinary household windows, a hand tool is easier to control than a long pole. Extension tools are useful for high or inaccessible glass, but they demand more attention to pressure, angle, and runoff.
Match the tool to the pane
Use a manageable blade width for the window’s geometry. A very wide blade can bridge muntins, handles, or uneven edges; a very narrow blade requires more passes on a large picture window. The useful choice is the one that can travel in one smooth stroke without hitting an obstruction.
Professional systems from Unger combine microfiber cloths with related tools for windows, ledges, frames, and sills. Such systems can make sense for repeated commercial work, but a household buyer should still check replacement-blade availability, handle comfort, and compatibility between the washer, squeegee, and extension pole.

1. Remove loose grit before wet cleaning
- Close or secure the window so the sash does not move during the stroke.
- Brush or wipe loose dust from the glass, frame, track, and sill with a dry cloth. Grit left on the pane can be dragged across the surface and can contaminate the squeegee edge.
- Use a separate cloth for visibly dirty frames and sills. Do not use that cloth for the final glass polish until it has been laundered.
2. Work in sections that can stay wet
Apply cleaner to a manageable section rather than flooding an entire wall of glass. Simple Green’s procedure specifically advises working in sections so the solution does not dry on the surface. Drying solution is harder to remove and can leave a residue that looks like streaking.

Spray the cloth or the pane according to the cleaner’s label and ventilation guidance. Avoid saturating wood trim, unsealed stone, electrical components, or the inside of a frame. Simple Green describes its PRO Glass Cleaner as ammonia-free and bleach-free; that describes that product, not every glass cleaner.
3. Agitate with the microfiber cloth
Fold the cloth so a clean face contacts the pane. Wipe until fingerprints, oily marks, and visible soil are loosened. Use the cloth to reach the perimeter where a squeegee cannot finish cleanly. On divided panes, clean each small section separately rather than forcing a long diagonal stroke around bars.
4. Pull the squeegee while the glass is evenly wet
Keep the rubber blade in continuous contact with the window. Simple Green emphasizes that contact prevents missed spots. Start at the top and pull downward in a controlled stroke; Screwfix likewise recommends smooth, overlapping strokes from the top.

On a small pane, vertical strokes are practical. On a large picture window, horizontal strokes can reduce the number of long reaches. Whichever direction you choose, overlap the previous path slightly so narrow wet strips are not left between passes.
5. Wipe the blade after every pass
Use a clean, lint-free section of cloth to wipe the squeegee blade after each stroke. This removes the dirty water that would otherwise be redeposited on the next pass. Keep the handle movement steady instead of repeatedly lifting and re-setting the blade in the middle of a pane.
6. Detail edges and missed spots
After the main water has been removed, use a dry glass microfiber cloth on corners, the bottom edge, and any narrow strip the blade could not reach. Buff lightly; excessive pressure can spread residue rather than remove it. Wipe the frame and sill separately so dirty runoff does not wick back onto the glass.

Technique for different window shapes
Small panes and divided lights
Clean one pane at a time. Vertical squeegee strokes give better control around muntins and reduce the chance of catching a frame. Wipe the blade between panes, not just between rooms.

Horizontal strokes can be more comfortable across a broad pane. Keep the blade level, overlap each pass, and finish the remaining vertical edge with a folded cloth. If the glass starts to dry before you finish, re-wet that section rather than scrubbing a half-dry film.
Mirrors and other smooth surfaces
The same cloth-and-squeegee workflow can be used on smooth mirrors and chrome, provided the cleaner is safe for the material. Keep liquid away from the back, electronics, and unsealed edges of framed mirrors.
High or exterior glass
Use stable access equipment and avoid leaning out of a window. An extension pole can keep you on the ground, but the blade still needs continuous contact and a clean edge. For upper-story exterior panes, professional service may be safer than improvising from a ladder.
Cleaner choice and handling
The tool technique cannot compensate for a cleaner that dries too quickly, leaves a film, or is incompatible with a coating. Read the label for dilution, ventilation, and material restrictions. Ammonia- and bleach-free formulas can be preferable around certain finishes, but “ammonia-free” does not mean universally safe for every frame, tint, seal, or coating.
- Mix or dilute only as the label directs.
- Use enough solution to suspend soil, but not so much that it runs into frames and sills.
- Keep the working area shaded when possible; direct heat and sun accelerate drying.
- Never combine bleach, ammonia, acids, or other cleaners.
- Ventilate enclosed rooms and follow the product’s eye and skin precautions.
How to wash and store microfiber cloths
Separate glass cloths from greasy laundry
Wash window cloths separately from clothes, towels, and kitchen rags that carry oil, fabric softener, wax, or grit. Residue trapped in the fibers can create a new film on the next pane.

Use the permitted temperature and detergent
For the Kärcher cloth specification described above, the stated maximum wash temperature is 60 °C. Other cloths may have different limits. Use a detergent that does not leave a softening or fragrance coating unless the manufacturer explicitly permits it.
Dry gently and inspect before reuse
Avoid high dryer temperatures when the manufacturer warns they shorten service life. Before folding the cloth, check for embedded grit, hardened cleaner, loose threads, or an oily feel. Retire a cloth from glass finishing if it can no longer rinse clean or begins shedding lint.
Store clean cloths in a closed, dry place away from sanding dust, pet hair, and household chemicals. Keep the squeegee blade resting without a sharp bend; do not store it pressed against a rough surface.

Troubleshooting streaks, haze, and missed spots
Parallel streaks after squeegeeing
- Inspect the blade for a nick, curl, hard spot, or trapped grit.
- Wipe the blade after every pass.
- Re-wet the pane and make overlapping strokes with steady pressure.
- Use a clean, dry microfiber face for the final edge work.
Hazy film that returns after drying
The usual suspects are cleaner residue, fabric-softener contamination, grease, or mineral deposits. Rinse or launder the cloth, use the cleaner at its specified dilution, and test a small area. If the haze remains on an otherwise clean pane, it may be mineral scale, a damaged coating, or deterioration of the glass rather than a simple wiping error.
Lint on the finished pane
Switch to a dedicated glass cloth, fold to a fresh face, and keep it away from cotton towels and dusty work. Do not use a cloth with a frayed edge for the final pass.
Wet borders around the frame
Reduce the amount of spray, clean in smaller sections, and use a separate cloth to dry the perimeter. Absorb runoff promptly, especially on wood, porous stone, or painted surfaces.
Streaks only in direct sunlight
Strong side light reveals residue that may be invisible in shade. Clean when the pane is cooler, prevent the solution from drying, and make one deliberate squeegee sequence instead of repeatedly polishing isolated marks.
