Best Metro Redux Console Settings: Controls, Aim Sensitivity, and Subtitles

The best Metro Redux settings are the ones that let you turn quickly without overshooting, place the reticle precisely on distant targets, and read dialogue comfortably. There is no official or tested universal sensitivity number: the Metro 2033 and Metro: Last Light manuals document the available controls, but do not publish an ideal value or sensitivity scale.

Metro Redux contains two campaigns, Metro 2033 and Metro: Last Light. Menu names and button mappings can vary by campaign, console, and edition, so use the instructions below as a tuning method and confirm each label in the game you are playing.

Recommended starting setup

Before fine-tuning, use this neutral baseline:

  • Choose the controller preset whose button layout already feels familiar.
  • Set overall (look) sensitivity near the middle of the range, if your menu displays a range.
  • Set aim sensitivity separately, also near the middle of its available range.
  • Leave aim assist enabled while establishing your basic camera and reticle control; adjust assistance only afterward.
  • Turn subtitles on if you want dialogue displayed as text.
  • Choose the text language independently from spoken voice language when your edition offers both.
  • Keep Y-axis inversion, vibration, and the movement-stick assignment at the values that match your normal controller habits.

This is a starting procedure, not an official benchmark. Change one option at a time and keep the setting that remains controllable during both exploration and combat.

Check which Metro Redux campaign and console you are using

Metro Redux is a package containing Metro 2033 and Metro: Last Light. The official Xbox help page describes a Metro Redux console control scheme, while the detailed setting descriptions come from separate official manuals for Metro 2033 and Metro: Last Light. Those manuals establish that the options exist, but they do not guarantee that every current PlayStation, Xbox, or other console build uses identical labels, defaults, or button positions.

Identify the campaign from its title screen before following a button-specific instruction. If an option listed below is missing, look for a differently named equivalent in the controller or gameplay section rather than assuming the game is malfunctioning. An older manual can document a feature without matching the exact presentation of a later port.

What the controller menus let you change

Both manuals describe a broad set of controller options. The common controls below are the most important ones for building a comfortable setup.

Option documented in the manuals What it changes When to adjust it
Controller presets Provides three alternative button layouts. Choose the layout that keeps movement, firing, reloading, and interaction easiest to reach without moving your thumb unnecessarily.
Overall sensitivity Controls general camera or look speed. Adjust when turning during exploration feels too slow or too fast.
Aim sensitivity Provides a separate speed for aiming. Adjust after overall sensitivity so fine reticle movement can be tested independently.
Aim assist Changes the amount of target assistance. Use after basic sensitivity is comfortable; assistance does not replace a preferred camera speed.
Movement-stick choice Lets you choose which stick controls movement. Change it if the default conflicts with your established controller layout.
Vibration Adjusts controller vibration. Lower or disable it if feedback distracts you, masks audio cues, or causes discomfort.
Y-axis inversion Reverses vertical camera input. Enable only if you naturally pull the stick down to look up and push it up to look down.
Subtitles Turns in-game subtitle text on or off. Enable for spoken dialogue you want to read, or disable for an unobstructed view.

The manuals do not publish a numeric “best” value for any sensitivity option. Treat the table as a map of available controls, not as a claim that one preset or value is superior for every player.

How to tune overall and aim sensitivity

Use a repeatable sequence rather than changing several sliders after a difficult encounter. The aim is to separate broad camera movement from precise target placement.

1. Establish a middle starting point

Open the controller or gameplay options and locate overall sensitivity and aim sensitivity. If the game shows a clear low-to-high range, start around the middle. If it uses named positions or a less obvious scale, choose the central-looking position and record what you selected. The manuals provide no universal number, so a middle starting point is simply a neutral reference for your own adjustments.

2. Test a full direction change

Return to a safe area and rotate through a complete change of direction. Use the same stick movement each time. If the camera repeatedly swings past the direction you intended, reduce overall sensitivity by one small increment. If you must hold the stick for an uncomfortable length of time to turn, increase it by one small increment. Repeat the same turn after every change.

Do not judge this step by how quickly you can spin. A useful value lets you stop on a doorway, stairwell, or nearby threat without correcting the camera several times.

  • Two unique Play Styles : 'Spartan' and 'Survival'
  • The legendary Ranger Mode returns - dare you play the fearsome Ranger Mode?

3. Test aim on a distant target

With the broad camera speed feeling manageable, aim at a distant, stationary target. Move the reticle slowly onto a specific point, such as the upper torso, then try to hold it there. Lower aim sensitivity if the reticle jumps past the point during small corrections. Raise it slightly if the reticle feels stuck behind a moving target or requires excessive stick travel.

Use small, single-step changes. Overall sensitivity and aim sensitivity are separate documented controls, so changing the look slider cannot tell you whether the aiming slider itself is comfortable.

4. Verify the setting while moving

Repeat the distant-target test while strafing, backing away, and turning toward a second target. A setting that feels precise while standing still may become too slow when you must track movement and reposition. Keep the lowest speed that still lets you follow a target without running out of stick travel, or the highest speed that still allows you to stop accurately—whichever better matches your control style.

5. Adjust assistance only after the baseline

Once the two sensitivity controls feel stable, test aim assist. If your reticle is pulled toward targets more strongly than you want, reduce the assistance setting if the menu allows it. If you regularly pass just beside targets, increase assistance and repeat the same moving-target test. Aim assist changes how the game helps target acquisition; it does not change your preferred raw camera speed, which is why it should be tuned later.

6. Keep a change log

Change one setting, play through more than a single room, and note whether the new value helped both exploration and combat. If a change solves one situation but creates another problem, return to the previous value and alter the other control instead. This prevents a chain of adjustments in which you no longer know which option caused the improvement.

Aim assist and auto-aim border size

Aim assist is documented in both manuals. Metro: Last Light additionally documents an auto-aim border-size option. The border setting concerns the area around a target in which assistance can engage; it is a targeting aid, not a replacement for overall or aim sensitivity.

For a mostly manual feel

  • Set overall and aim sensitivity first using the tests above.
  • Use the lower end of available assistance options, or disable assistance if the menu provides that choice.
  • In Last Light, use a smaller auto-aim border if you want assistance to engage only when the reticle is already close.
  • Test short-range and distant targets separately; a setting that feels unobtrusive at distance can still pull strongly during close encounters.

For easier target acquisition

  • Keep a controlled, not excessively fast, aim sensitivity.
  • Increase aim assist gradually and test while moving rather than only against stationary targets.
  • In Last Light, increase the auto-aim border only as far as needed to catch targets you are intentionally tracking.
  • If the reticle appears to jump between nearby enemies, reduce assistance or the border before lowering sensitivity.

Neither manual reports a measured accuracy gain, a preferred border size, or a universal assistance level. These profiles are practical ways to evaluate the options, not publisher-tested performance claims.

Choosing a controller preset and stick layout

Controller presets

Both manuals list three controller presets. Their names and exact button assignments can differ by platform, so select each option in the menu and read the on-screen diagram. Pick the preset that lets you perform the actions you use most—moving, aiming, firing, reloading, crouching, and interacting—without stretching or releasing the stick.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Switching presets late in a campaign can create avoidable muscle-memory errors. If you do change, spend several minutes in a low-risk area repeating movement, weapon handling, and interaction before returning to a difficult section.

Movement-stick choice

The manuals document a choice of which stick controls movement. Use the stick assignment that matches your established habits from other first-person games. If diagonal movement feels awkward or you keep pressing the wrong stick under pressure, change this option before changing sensitivity; a layout problem cannot be solved by a faster or slower camera.

Vibration

Vibration is adjustable. Keep it on if tactile feedback helps you notice impacts or weapon events. Lower it or turn it off if repeated rumble makes fine aim harder, competes with audio cues, or causes hand fatigue. Vibration does not alter camera speed, so it can be changed independently of the sensitivity tests.

Y-axis inversion

Test vertical movement in a safe area before committing. If pushing the right stick upward makes you look down in your usual games, enable Y-axis inversion; if that response feels backward, leave it off. Make this choice early because changing it after developing muscle memory can make every vertical correction feel reversed.

Last Light controller feel and button reversal

The Metro: Last Light manual also documents controller feel and button reversal. Use controller feel if your edition exposes a separate response or handling choice, then retest both camera turns and aiming. Button reversal is useful only when your physical preference or accessibility needs require a reversed action arrangement; verify every important action from the in-game diagram after enabling it.

Turning subtitles on and selecting language

Both manuals document an ON/OFF subtitle option. The Metro: Last Light manual states: “Select to turn ON or OFF the in-game subtitles.”

  1. Open the main menu or pause menu.
  2. Enter Options, then open the language, audio, or gameplay subsection used by your edition.
  3. Find Subtitles and set it to ON.
  4. Return to gameplay and confirm that the next spoken line appears as text.
  5. If the text is in the wrong language, open the text-language setting and choose the desired language separately.

Metro 2033’s manual lists separate voice-language and text-language settings; text language controls the subtitle language. The Last Light manual identifies text language as the subtitle-language control. This means you can generally keep spoken voices in one available language while reading subtitles in another when your edition exposes both controls, but the exact menu path and language list depend on the platform build.

If subtitles are enabled but nothing appears, test a line of spoken dialogue rather than a silent section, check that you changed the setting in the active campaign, and verify that text language did not revert after changing another language option.

Practical setting profiles

These profiles avoid invented numbers and describe the trade-offs you should seek while tuning.

Precision-focused

  • Use a moderate overall sensitivity that lets you stop on doorways and targets without overshoot.
  • Use a slightly more deliberate aim sensitivity, adjusted with the distant-target test.
  • Keep aim assist low and, in Last Light, use a smaller auto-aim border.
  • Disable vibration if rumble interferes with fine corrections.

Balanced exploration and combat

  • Set overall sensitivity high enough for comfortable direction changes but low enough for controlled stops.
  • Match aim sensitivity to the speed at which you can track a moving target without repeated corrections.
  • Keep moderate assistance and adjust only after testing both close and distant targets.
  • Use the controller preset and stick assignment that require the fewest conscious button movements.

Assistance-focused

  • Keep raw sensitivity controlled rather than compensating for assistance with an overly fast camera.
  • Increase aim assist gradually and, in Last Light, enlarge the auto-aim border only until target acquisition feels consistent.
  • Retest crowded encounters to make sure assistance does not pull toward an unintended nearby enemy.
  • Keep subtitles on if reading dialogue reduces the need to divide attention between audio and action.

These are decision frameworks. The official documentation does not identify one as the correct or strongest configuration.

Troubleshooting common setting problems

“I cannot find aim sensitivity.”

Open the controller options for the active campaign, not only the general console settings. The Metro 2033 and Metro: Last Light manuals both document separate overall and aim sensitivity controls, but labels or menu groupings can vary by edition. Check for a controller-feel or advanced-control subsection if the option is not beside overall sensitivity.

“Turning is fine, but aiming overshoots.”

Lower aim sensitivity without changing overall sensitivity. Confirm the result on a distant target, then while moving. If the reticle still jumps toward or past targets, reduce aim assist or the Last Light auto-aim border rather than repeatedly lowering the camera speed.

“Aiming is accurate, but turning feels sluggish.”

Raise overall sensitivity one increment and leave aim sensitivity unchanged. Test a full direction change and then return to a distant target. The separate controls are intended to let broad camera movement and precise aiming use different speeds.

“Aim assist feels like it is fighting my input.”

Reduce aim assist after confirming your baseline sensitivity. In Last Light, reduce auto-aim border size as well. Test near targets and overlapping enemies because unwanted pull is easiest to notice when several targets are close together.

“Subtitles are on, but the language is wrong.”

Open text language rather than voice language. Metro 2033 documents both settings separately, and Last Light identifies text language as the subtitle-language control. Apply the change, return to gameplay, and wait for a new spoken line to verify it.

“The controls feel reversed.”

Check Y-axis inversion and button reversal. Change only one, then test vertical looking, firing, reloading, and interaction from the controller diagram. A reversed stick response and a reversed button layout are different problems.

“The manual’s labels do not match my console.”

Do not assume the discrepancy means an option is absent. The documentation covers specific Metro 2033 and Last Light versions, while Redux ports can present different labels or defaults. Use the function described—look speed, aim speed, assistance, text language, or stick assignment—and rely on the active game’s on-screen prompt for the exact button path.

Final verification checklist

After making changes, confirm the complete setup in one uninterrupted session:

  • You are editing the intended campaign, Metro 2033 or Metro: Last Light.
  • The controller preset and movement-stick assignment match your normal layout.
  • A full camera turn stops where intended without repeated correction.
  • A distant target can be acquired and held while standing and moving.
  • Aim assist and, where available, auto-aim border size help without pulling toward unintended targets.
  • Vibration and Y-axis inversion are comfortable and intentional.
  • Subtitles display during spoken dialogue and text language is correct.
  • You changed one setting at a time and kept notes of the values that worked.

The most defensible “best” Metro Redux setup is therefore a controlled personal baseline: separate overall and aim sensitivity, assistance adjusted afterward, a familiar controller layout, and subtitles and language configured to your reading needs.
