Start by checking the handset’s exact Android or iOS version, install any manufacturer update, and then compare that version with the current requirements of Telegram, Signal and Viber. As of October 13, 2026, WhatsApp lists Android 6.0 and iOS 15.1 as minimums; a WhatsApp Help Center result says the iOS minimum is scheduled to rise to 15.5 on November 30, 2026. Telegram is the first app to check on Android 5, while Signal and Viber have important limits that rule out some older devices.
Check why WhatsApp stopped working before choosing another app
A phone can stop running WhatsApp for several different reasons. The operating system may be below the app’s minimum, the device may no longer be supported by the app store, or a temporary installation problem may be involved. Do not assume that an alternative app will support the same handset: every service sets its own minimum version, and an app that installs can still fail to send messages or place calls on an obsolete system.

Find the installed operating-system version
- Android: Open Settings, then About phone (or About device) and read Android version. Menu names vary by manufacturer.
- iPhone: Open Settings > General > About and read iOS Version.
Check for an official update
On Android, look under Settings > System > Software update or the manufacturer’s equivalent. On iPhone, use Settings > General > Software Update. Install an update offered for that exact model, restart the phone, and check the app listing again. If no update is offered, the handset is limited to its current operating system.
Confirm the official store listing
Search for the app in Google Play or the Apple App Store while signed in on the affected phone. The listing’s compatibility message is more useful than a generic web statement because it accounts for the device model, processor, region and store policy. If the listing says the app is unavailable, do not treat a downloadable file from an unofficial site as an equivalent solution.

These are product requirements, not popularity rankings. No comparable usage-share data establishes which app your contacts are most likely to use, so ask the people you need to reach before moving everyone to a new service.
Telegram: the first check for Android 5
Telegram’s October 8, 2026 release information lists Android 5 as its minimum, making it the most promising first check for a phone that cannot run WhatsApp because it is stuck on Android 5. The dated release information lists iOS 15.0 or later for iPhones.
The iPhone requirement is inconsistent across Telegram’s own information
Telegram’s general FAQ still states iOS 13.0, while the dated October 8 release information states iOS 15.0. Treat the dated release as the better current indicator, but verify the live App Store compatibility line on the specific iPhone. Requirements can change between releases, and the store may apply additional device restrictions.

- Install Telegram only from Google Play or the App Store.
- Complete account setup and allow the app to finish any in-app update.
- Send a test message to a contact who has agreed to try it.
- Check the functions you actually need, such as group conversations, voice or video calls, media delivery and desktop access, rather than assuming that another app behaves exactly like WhatsApp.
If the store reports that the phone is incompatible, an older downloadable package is not an officially supported workaround. Do not disable security controls or rely on modified builds to bypass the requirement.

Signal: not a universal fallback
Signal’s support information lists Android 5.0 and iOS 14 as no longer supported. That wording matters: a phone on one of those versions is not a supported Signal device, even if an old installation remains visible.
Signal Support explains its policy this way: “Signal supports older operating systems for as long as possible until there is a technical limitation against us doing so.” The same support information warns that an app can open on an out-of-date system while messaging and calls remain unavailable until the operating system is upgraded.
How to interpret an apparent installation success
- An icon appearing in the app drawer does not prove that registration, message delivery or calling will work.
- Do not use a successful launch as evidence that the phone is supported.
- Upgrade the operating system through the manufacturer’s normal path, then install the current store version and perform a real test message and call.
For a handset below the supported threshold with no upgrade path, Signal should not be presented as a dependable replacement.
Viber: Android 6 and iOS 15.2 minimums
Viber’s support page lists Android 6 and iOS 15.2 as minimums. That makes it a possible option for a phone just above WhatsApp’s Android floor, but not for Android 5 or an iPhone below iOS 15.2.

Viber also states that when a device or version is not listed, the app may not be downloadable and support cannot be offered. Check the listing on the actual handset instead of relying only on the version number. Two phones running the same nominal operating system can have different store eligibility because of model, architecture or regional availability.
Use a contact test before switching permanently
- Ask the intended contacts to install Viber first.
- Exchange a text message and an attachment over the phone’s usual connection.
- Test any calling or group functions that are essential to your household or team.
- Keep the old service available until the test succeeds for every person who needs access.

Choose by the people and tasks you need to reach
Contact adoption comes before feature checklists
The technically compatible app is useless if the people you need to contact will not use it. Make a short list of family members, customers, coworkers or emergency contacts, and ask which service they can install on their own phones. There is no evidence here to rank Telegram, Signal or Viber by market share, so avoid choosing on an assumed popularity advantage.
Define the required functions
Write down whether you need one-to-one text, group chats, voice calls, video calls, file or photo sharing, notifications while the app is closed, or access from a computer. Then verify each item in the app’s current listing and documentation. Operating-system compatibility alone does not establish feature parity.

Separate compatibility from privacy decisions
Compatibility pages do not provide a fair comparative privacy ranking. If privacy is a deciding factor, read each provider’s current privacy documentation separately and consider account recovery, backup, contact discovery and desktop-session controls. Do not infer a privacy winner from the minimum OS number.

Safe installation and migration procedure
- Back up important conversations and media. Use the options available in the existing app and copy irreplaceable files separately. Do not delete the old app before confirming that needed information is available elsewhere.
- Record the phone version. Write down the exact Android or iOS release and model number. This makes a store error easier to diagnose.
- Install pending system updates. Use only the manufacturer’s update screen. Keep the phone charged and connected to a trusted network.
- Open the official store listing. Check the required operating system, developer name, update date and available permissions. If the listing blocks installation, treat that as a compatibility result.
- Install one candidate at a time. Running several migrations at once makes it harder to identify which service failed.
- Test with a real contact. Send a message, receive a reply and try the specific call or group workflow you rely on.
- Tell contacts where you moved. Use a final status message or another channel so people do not keep sending messages to an account you no longer monitor.
- Keep account recovery details current. Follow the app’s official recovery process and make sure the phone number or email needed for re-registration is accessible.
Common failure modes and fixes
The store says the app is incompatible
Recheck the operating-system version, install every manufacturer update, restart the phone and open the listing again. If the device remains blocked, the app’s current build is not available for that handset. Do not substitute an unofficial or modified package.
The app installs but cannot send messages or make calls
This is specifically possible on an outdated operating system. Confirm the OS is above the provider’s supported floor, update the app from the official store, restart the phone and test again. If the OS cannot be upgraded, stop treating the installation as a supported solution.
Only some members of a group can join
Check every member’s OS and store eligibility individually. A group plan fails when one essential participant is on an unsupported phone. Choose a service that all required members can install, or provide a separate communication method for the excluded device.

Notifications arrive late or not at all
First verify that messages arrive when the app is open. Then review the phone’s notification permission, battery-saver restrictions, background-data setting and available storage. Menu names differ by manufacturer, so use the phone’s Settings search. These checks address delivery behavior; they do not override an unsupported OS.

The phone has no usable compatible app
If the manufacturer offers no newer OS and none of the official listings accepts the handset, the practical remedy is a replacement phone. Consider an unlocked Android phone or a refurbished Android phone only after checking its exact supported OS, security-update policy and store access. A replacement is a conditional solution for a device that cannot be updated, not an automatic first recommendation.
What WhatsApp’s own notices mean for planning
WhatsApp’s Help Center explains: “Devices and software change often, so we regularly review which operating systems we support.” Its download page listed Android 6.0 or above and iOS 15.1 or newer on October 13, 2026. A Help Center search result says the iOS minimum will become 15.5 on November 30, 2026. Because that date is still in the future relative to October 17, verify the live notice before making a long-term decision.
The lesson is to plan around an update path, not a single frozen number. A phone that meets today’s minimum can fall out of support after a future release, while a phone below today’s minimum cannot be rescued by changing messaging apps unless another provider still supports its operating system.
Bottom line for an older handset
Check Telegram first on Android 5, but verify the dated release requirement and the live store listing. Treat Signal as unsupported on Android 5.0 and iOS 14, even if an old app opens. Check Viber only from Android 6 or iOS 15.2 upward. On iPhone, resolve Telegram’s conflicting iOS information through the current App Store listing. In every case, install the official build, test with the people and features that matter, and replace the phone only when updates and compatible apps are genuinely exhausted.
