The right one depends on how often you shave, how sensitive your skin is, whether you want to shave in the shower, and how much you are willing to spend on replacement heads over the life of the shaver. Philips, the maker of the Norelco-branded range, organizes its rotary shavers into tiers with different intended uses. Those tiers are a sound place to start, but they are manufacturer descriptions, not independent test rankings. This guide shows how to match a model to your routine, what to check on a spec sheet, and what to budget for after purchase.
Start with the Philips range and what each tier is meant for
Philips’s own range guide describes its current rotary shavers by the kind of shave each tier is designed to deliver. Read these as the company’s positioning. They tell you what Philips intends each line to do, not how the models rank in an independent side-by-side test.

| Philips range | How Philips describes it | Who it suits, based on that description |
|---|---|---|
| i9000 Prestige Ultra and i9000 | Advanced shaving technology and guidance | Men who want the most features and are willing to pay for them |
| Series 7000 | Focus on skin comfort | Men whose main priority is a gentler shave on sensitive skin |
| Series 5000 | Everyday shaving combined with additional features | Most readers who want a balance of daily performance and extras |
| Series 3000 / X3000 and Series 1000 | Straightforward everyday shaving | Men who want a simple shaver without extra functions |
Philips’s range guide does not give prices in the material available, so compare the local listing for the exact model you are considering. Feature sets also differ inside each tier. Do not assume that every Series 5000 or Series 7000 model has the same features as the example later in this guide.

Rotary or foil: a question of technique, not a winner
Rotary and foil shavers use different movements, and Philips says the better choice depends on your beard growth, your technique, and your preference. Philips does not claim that rotary is superior for every man, and neither should a buying guide.
#1 Best Overall
- From the #1 electric shaver brand¹: Shaver 2400 Series gives you a fast, clean shave even on sensitive skin thanks to 27 self-sharpening ComfortCut blades and 4D Flex Heads
- Designed for life, built to last: with 2-year self-sharpening steel blades lifetime you can enjoy a shaver that performs like new every day
- Fast, clean shave: 27 self-sharpening ComfortCut blades comfortably cut hair right above skin level for a smooth, even finish, every time

- Floating heads move freely in 4 directions to keep contact with the curves of your face, protecting it from nicks and cuts
How a rotary head works
According to Philips, rotary heads are designed to follow the contours of the face and to capture hairs that grow in different directions. Philips recommends small circular movements rather than long straight strokes. If you move the shaver in the same direction you would with a foil head, you may find you are not getting the most from the design.
When a rotary shaver may not suit your habits
Men who are used to long, straight passes may need a few shaves to adjust to the circular motion. If your beard is very coarse or your routine depends on a specific technique, test the shaver’s comfort and closeness over several shaves before deciding. Philips describes closeness and comfort as product claims; individual results will vary with beard and skin.

Read the spec sheet for the exact model, not the series name
Philips’s product documentation shows that features are set model by model. The best way to see what a model offers is to read its specification sheet, and to confirm the details against the local listing and manual.

- Up to 60 minutes of cordless shaving on a single charge
- Wireless Qi charging pad
- Dry shaving, or wet shaving with gel or foam, including use in the shower
- Flexible rotary heads
- A sensor that reads hair density 500 times per second; Philips’s specification sheet states this in its own words: “The electric shaver has intelligent facial-hair sensing technology that reads hair density 500 times per second.”
- Click-on attachments: a nose trimmer, a precision trimmer, and a cleansing brush
Use this as a template for what to check, not as a description of the whole range. A Series 5000 or Series 1000 model may lack some of these features entirely.
A checklist for comparing any model
- Wet or dry permission: Confirm whether the model is rated for wet shaving with gel or foam, and whether showering is allowed. Do not assume this from the series name.
- Charging type: Check whether the model uses a cable, a charging stand, or a wireless pad.
- Runtime: Note the cordless run time stated for the exact model.
- Sensors and display: Check whether the model has a hair-density sensor or a display, and whether those functions are included or optional.
- Head design: Confirm whether the heads are flexible, which affects how well the shaver follows the jaw and neck.
- Included attachments: List the trimmers, cleansing brushes, or other accessories in the box, since bundles differ.
- Cleaning accessories: Check whether the model uses a Quick Clean Pod or can be rinsed by hand.
Ownership costs: heads, cartridges, and cleaning
Replacement parts are part of the cost of owning a rotary shaver, and they vary by model. Build them into your comparison before you buy.
Rank #4
- Skin-Level Closeness: The Triple Action Lift & Cut system and 360-degree Dual SteelPrecision rotating blades deliver 7 million cutting motions per minute to achieve up to 0.00mm closeness, even on 7 day beards.
- Precision Flex Heads: Compact flexible heads maintain skin contact even in difficult areas around the neck and under the nose for 20% more precision²
- AI-Powered SenseIQ: senses, guides and adapts to your facial contours for superior closeness² and personalized skin comfort
- Ultimate Skin Comfort: Hydro SkinGlide Coating provides 50% smoother gliding on the skin²; Power Adapt Sensor reads hair 500x per second and adapts power
- Built to Last: 100% waterproof for wet or dry shaving; 2-year self-sharpening blade lifetime and warranty of up to 5 years³
How often to replace the heads
Philips’s maintenance guidance says most models need replacement heads about every two years. Actual timing depends on how often you shave and how well you clean the shaver. Philips’s guidance does not state a price for heads or cartridges, so do not budget from a figure you have not checked against your local store. Cost per year depends on the model, how you use it, and which optional accessories you buy.

Cleaning: Quick Clean Pod or manual rinsing
Owners of models with a Quick Clean Pod need to buy replacement cartridges for the pod on a regular basis. Compatible shavers can also be cleaned manually under running water. Confirm whether your model supports both methods before you decide whether the pod is worth the extra expense.

Do not buy replacement heads by brand name alone
Philips’s replacement sheet for the RQ12/72 shaving unit, dated 2022-08-24, says that part is discontinued. It names the SH70/72 as its replacement for SensoTouch 3D (RQ12xx) and Arcitec (RQ10xx) shavers. The same sheet says the SH71 is not compatible with those models. Follow these steps before you order:
- Find the model number on the shaver or in its manual, for example RQ12/72 or a number starting with RQ10 or RQ12.
- Check the replacement sheet or the Philips support page for that model to confirm which head part is compatible.
- Order the part number that matches your model, not one that merely looks like it.
- Confirm stock and compatibility with the retailer before buying, since the 2022 document may not reflect current availability.
How to decide, and what the evidence does and does not show
Use the range descriptions and the spec sheet together. Choose a comfort-focused tier if skin irritation is your main concern. Choose a feature-rich tier if you want shower use, a charging pad, or attachments. Choose a basic everyday tier if you want a straightforward shave and lower up-front cost. In every case, check the exact model’s wet or dry rating, charging method, and replacement head compatibility.
The available evidence does not establish a winner across current models. Philips’s descriptions, specifications, and maintenance statements are manufacturer claims. No independent head-to-head comparison of current Philips models was found that could support a single “best” pick. Consumer discussions and editorial reviews exist, but they do not provide a controlled comparison of the full range. Treat any model recommendation as a match to your needs, and verify the current local listing and manual before you buy.
