There is no single best replacement for MEGA. Sync.com is the strongest fit for zero-knowledge storage and secure sharing; Proton Drive suits people already using Proton’s privacy ecosystem; pCloud is attractive for personal archives and media, especially if a lifetime plan is available; and Tresorit is designed around controlled business file exchange. Internxt, Icedrive, Filen, Google Drive, and OneDrive fill different gaps.
This is a research-based 2026 comparison, not a claim that the author personally measured upload speeds, sync reliability, or recovery performance. Prices, storage limits, promotions, encryption features, and country availability change frequently, so confirm the provider’s current terms before paying.

How to choose a MEGA alternative
Start with the job your files must perform, not the largest advertised capacity. A private archive, a folder shared with clients, and a team workspace have different failure modes. Use the following questions before comparing plans.
1. Who should be able to decrypt the files?
“Encrypted” does not identify the key holder or every circumstance in which a provider can access content. Look for a precise description of which files are encrypted, whether encryption is end-to-end or client-side, how link sharing works, and what happens when you lose a password or recovery key. Privacy labels are not interchangeable, and this comparison does not independently audit any provider’s implementation.
#1 Best Overall
- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
2. Are you sending files to people outside your account?
For client work, you may need expiring links, download restrictions, passwords, folder-level permissions, audit information, or a way to remove access without changing the file. A personal locker can store the same document but still be a poor exchange system. Treat secure sharing as a separate criterion.
3. Do you need editing and team administration?
If several people edit documents, integrations with an office suite can matter more than a standalone storage feature. Check version history, simultaneous editing, comments, identity management, administrator controls, and whether guests can work without purchasing a full account.
4. Is the data an archive or an active workspace?
Archives favor predictable long-term access, clear export procedures, media organization, and a price structure you can sustain. Active workspaces favor fast sharing, search, synchronization across operating systems, and recovery from accidental edits. Do not assume a lifetime offer is automatically cheaper: calculate how many years you realistically expect to use it and include any separate encryption or upgrade costs.

The ACCC’s market description lists standalone services such as Dropbox, pCloud, Sync.com, and IDrive alongside ecosystem products. Standalone services can synchronize and back up files across different software platforms, while ecosystem products may reduce friction for users already working in a particular mail, calendar, or office environment. Compatibility and account consolidation can outweigh a small storage difference.

Detailed alternatives
Sync.com: the privacy-and-sharing candidate
Sync.com is the clearest starting point when your reason for leaving MEGA is a privacy-oriented storage model combined with secure sharing. The cited comparison recommends it for zero-knowledge storage, sensitive-document workflows, professional links, and small teams. That makes it more than a simple file locker: the important question is whether its sharing controls match the way you deliver documents to clients or colleagues.
Rank #2
- Easily store and access 5TB of content on the go with the Seagate portable drive, a USB external hard Drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
The trade-off is value at the free tier. The comparison says its free storage is less generous than MEGA’s, so a large personal archive may require a paid plan sooner. Confirm current storage limits, supported operating systems, link options, administrator features, and regional billing before committing. Do not present Sync.com as an unconditional winner; it is a use-case recommendation.
Proton Drive: best when you already use Proton
Proton Drive makes the most sense when your account already includes Proton Mail, VPN, Password, or Calendar. Keeping privacy-oriented services under one provider can simplify identity management and reduce the number of separate accounts you must secure. It is a natural alternative for users who value that ecosystem more than a large catalog of collaboration features.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThe cited comparison identifies comparatively limited collaboration as the key drawback. If your workflow depends on simultaneous editing, comments, document-native version control, or broad guest access, test those tasks before moving a team. Treat Proton Drive as an ecosystem choice, not as an automatic replacement for every office-suite function.
pCloud: flexible personal storage and media libraries
pCloud is aimed at personal storage, media collections, and long-term archives. The comparison also highlights lifetime plans, which can appeal to someone who wants to avoid an indefinite subscription. A lifetime purchase is a financial decision, not proof of lower total cost: compare the one-time price with the recurring plan you would otherwise keep, estimate your retention period, and include any separately priced encryption feature.
One important qualification is encryption scope. The cited summary says client-side encryption is typically an extra paid feature. Verify exactly which folders receive that protection, how sharing behaves, and what recovery options exist. A standard storage plan and an encrypted vault may have different capabilities.
Rank #3
- Easily store and access 1TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive.Specific uses: Personal
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop. Reformatting may be required for Mac
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
Tresorit: controlled business file exchange
Tresorit belongs on a shortlist when files move between a business and external clients, contractors, or regulated teams. The comparison positions it for confidential files, controlled access, and professional sharing rather than for the cheapest personal capacity. That focus can justify a higher price when administrative controls and predictable access management are worth more than raw storage.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsBefore describing it as suitable for a regulated industry, obtain current compliance documentation for your country and plan. Confirm administrator roles, audit information, guest access, retention and deletion behavior, recovery procedures, and the contract terms that apply to business data. A privacy-oriented product is not automatically compliant with every legal or contractual requirement.
Internxt: a smaller privacy-first option
Internxt is presented as a privacy-focused personal-storage candidate. Its principal trade-off is ecosystem size: you may encounter fewer integrations, fewer established workflows, or less third-party familiarity than with mainstream platforms. That is not a security verdict. It means you should verify current encryption documentation, export options, desktop and mobile clients, sharing behavior, support channels, and the provider’s live plan terms.
Review-site promotions are temporary examples, not evidence of a permanent price or an affiliate arrangement. Base a decision on the provider’s current terms rather than a dated discount.
Icedrive: virtual-drive access and lifetime-plan appeal
Icedrive is associated in the comparison with virtual-drive access, personal storage, and lifetime options. Those characteristics can suit an archive that you want to browse without keeping every file fully synchronized on a local disk. Confirm how virtual-drive mode behaves offline, how conflicts are handled, and whether the platforms you use are supported.
Rank #4
- Easily store and access 4TB of content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive.Specific uses: Personal
The comparison ranks its privacy positioning below Sync.com or Proton Drive. Read the current encryption documentation rather than inferring protection from the word “secure,” and check whether a lifetime plan includes the privacy features you require.
Filen: encrypted storage from a less familiar provider
Filen is described as a smaller, privacy-first encrypted-storage service. It may appeal if you prefer a narrowly focused provider and are comfortable evaluating a less mainstream ecosystem. Before uploading irreplaceable data, check account recovery, export and deletion procedures, client availability, sharing limits, support responsiveness, and the exact key-management explanation.
Less recognition is a practical consideration: colleagues or clients may be less familiar with the service, and integrations may be fewer. Keep an independent backup while you establish whether the workflow is dependable for your needs.
Mainstream ecosystem alternatives
Google Drive
Google Drive is the ecosystem-oriented choice when document creation, sharing, and integrations across a broad productivity platform are central. Tom’s Guide describes its integration breadth. That convenience can outweigh a standalone provider’s privacy feature for a team already working in the same account environment. Evaluate the organization’s sharing defaults, administrator visibility, retention settings, export process, and account-recovery policy before moving sensitive material.
OneDrive
OneDrive is the natural comparison for readers whose files and identity already live in Microsoft 365. Tom’s Guide highlights that integration. Verify which capabilities belong to the subscription you would actually buy, how personal and business accounts differ, and what happens when an employee leaves an organization. Ecosystem convenience should be balanced against your required privacy and administrative controls.

Other category options
The ACCC filing places Dropbox, iCloud, IDrive, pCloud, Sync.com, MEGA, and other services in the consumer cloud-storage market. Dropbox and IDrive can be considered as standalone synchronization or backup-oriented services, while iCloud is most relevant when your devices and account are already tied to Apple’s platform. The available evidence does not establish a current feature-by-feature ranking for these products, so verify live storage, sharing, encryption, recovery, and cross-platform support before choosing one.

Use a written checklist instead of relying on a badge or slogan:
- Encryption boundary: Which data is encrypted on the device, in transit, and on the provider’s servers?
- Key control: Who can decrypt content, and can the provider technically access it?
- Sharing exception: Does creating a public or guest link change the protection model?
- Search and previews: Are thumbnails, indexes, or document previews handled differently from the original file?
- Recovery: What happens if you lose a password, device, recovery key, or administrator account?
- Export: Can you download original files and metadata in a usable form?
- Administration: Can a business remove access, transfer ownership, and preserve records when staff change?
These questions matter because stronger client-side protection can reduce the provider’s ability to recover an account for you. Obtain the current documentation for the exact plan and region you intend to use.

Sharing and collaboration: match controls to the recipient
For a private family folder, a simple invitation may be sufficient. For client work, define the control you need before comparing providers:
- Invite-only access instead of an unrestricted link
- Password protection and an expiration date
- View-only access, download blocking, or both
- Folder-level permissions for different clients or teams
- Version history and recovery from accidental overwrites
- Access revocation without deleting the source file
- Activity or audit information for business records
Sync.com and Tresorit are the most directly aligned with professional sharing in the cited comparison. Proton Drive may be preferable for a privacy-focused individual account but deserves a closer collaboration check. Google Drive and OneDrive are stronger candidates when editing and broader productivity integration are the primary requirements.
Storage value, lifetime plans, and volatile pricing
Do not copy a review-page price into a buying guide as if it were permanent. Monthly versus annual billing, introductory discounts, taxes, currency, country, storage limits, and business-seat minimums can all change the result. The cited 2026 review pages show time-sensitive offers, not guarantees.
For a recurring plan, calculate the annual cost for the number of years you expect to retain the data. For a lifetime plan, add the one-time fee, any separate encrypted-vault charge, and the value of maintaining a second backup. Then ask whether the provider’s long-term viability, export process, and support justify paying in advance. A lifetime label does not remove vendor or account risk.
Migration plan: move from MEGA without losing files
- Inventory the data. Separate active projects, personal archives, shared folders, and files that can be deleted. Record approximate sizes and file counts.
- Map permissions. List current collaborators, public links, expiry expectations, and ownership. Recreate access deliberately instead of copying every old link.
- Choose the protection model. Decide which folders require client-side or zero-knowledge protection and how recovery keys will be stored.
- Open and verify the destination account. Confirm the plan, billing period, country availability, desktop and mobile clients, and recovery method before uploading irreplaceable data.
- Copy in batches. Start with a small, noncritical folder. Check filenames, timestamps, folder structure, and special characters on every device you use.
- Validate downloads. Download representative documents, photos, archives, and large files. Open them locally and compare checksums when your workflow supports that.
- Rebuild sharing. Create new invitations or links, apply passwords and expiration dates, and test access from a separate account or browser session.
- Keep MEGA temporarily. Do not cancel the old account until the destination has been checked, shared links have been replaced, and an independent backup exists.
- Document recovery. Store passwords, recovery keys, administrator contacts, and export instructions in a secure place accessible to the people responsible for the data.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Choosing by capacity alone: Large storage does not provide the sharing, recovery, or editing controls your workflow may need.
- Assuming every encrypted plan is equivalent: Compare key handling and sharing exceptions, not just the word “encrypted.”
- Buying a lifetime plan without an exit plan: Keep an independent copy and confirm that bulk export is practical.
- Migrating links instead of files: Existing MEGA links generally do not become links for another provider; create and test replacements.
- Mixing personal and business accounts: Business ownership, administrator access, and staff departures require explicit policies.
- Trusting a dated promotion: Recheck the live provider page immediately before purchase.
- Calling a product compliant without documentation: Obtain current, plan-specific compliance and data-processing terms for your jurisdiction.
- Deleting the old copy too soon: Retain the source until integrity checks and recovery tests are complete.
Bottom line
Choose Sync.com for privacy-oriented storage with secure professional sharing, Proton Drive when a unified Proton account matters most, pCloud for personal archives and media, and Tresorit for controlled business exchange. Consider Internxt or Filen if you accept a smaller ecosystem, Icedrive if virtual-drive access or a lifetime option is important, and Google Drive or OneDrive when productivity-suite integration dominates the decision. Confirm live pricing, encryption scope, recovery, sharing controls, and regional availability for the exact plan before moving your data.
