There is no single best Apple MDM. Jamf Pro is the strongest default for large Apple-first fleets; Iru (formerly Kandji) is a leading automation-focused choice for small and midsize teams; Mosyle is a strong value and education contender; Addigy fits MSPs and multi-tenant Mac management; Microsoft Intune is usually the most efficient choice for Microsoft-centric mixed estates; and Apple Business can cover basic management for very small organizations. Your fleet, identity stack, ownership model and required Mac depth should determine the shortlist.
What Apple MDM software actually does
Mobile device management (MDM) applies Apple management commands and configuration profiles to Macs, iPhones, iPads, Apple TVs and, where supported, newer categories such as Apple Vision Pro. Typical controls include automated enrollment, supervision, Wi-Fi and VPN settings, certificates, passcode and restriction policies, app installation, operating-system updates, remote lock and wipe, Lost Mode, inventory, FileVault key escrow, Activation Lock controls and compliance reporting.

Apple platforms can report hardware identifiers, operating-system versions, installed apps, restrictions, Wi-Fi and MAC details, and FileVault status to an MDM service. See Apple’s selection guidance at Apple’s MDM guidance.
MDM is not automatically EDR, antivirus, backup, vulnerability management, identity management or help-desk software. Some vendors bundle those functions, so compare the management feature set and the security bundle separately.

Apple Business and third-party MDM: how they fit together
Apple Business and Apple School Manager provide the Apple-side foundation for zero-touch deployment, app licensing and managed accounts. Apple Business now includes built-in MDM, Blueprints for settings and apps, managed Apple Accounts, user groups, custom roles, app distribution and an admin API. Apple says the service becomes available on April 14, 2026, in more than 200 countries and regions; confirm availability and plan details for your country at Apple’s announcement.
That does not make every specialist unnecessary. Deep macOS scripting, extensive inventory, third-party patching, education workflows, MSP tenancy and complex compliance commonly justify a separate MDM. The usual architecture is Apple Business or Apple School Manager plus an MDM platform, not one instead of the other. Apple also permits multiple device-management services with different devices assigned to each service; documentation is at Apple’s device-management service guide.

| Small or midsize Apple-only team | Iru, Mosyle, Jamf Now | Faster deployment and less administrative overhead than a full enterprise stack. |
| Value and education | Mosyle | Apple-focused product family with a strong education presence; verify edition and support boundaries. |
| MSP or multi-tenant Mac management | Addigy | Per-device operations, MSP pricing and migration services. |
| Microsoft 365 and Windows plus Apple | Intune, or an Apple specialist integrated with Intune | Entra ID, Conditional Access and unified mixed-platform governance. |
| Basic management for a very small business | Apple Business or Jamf Now | First-party simplicity or a lightweight specialist product. |
| Broad mixed-OS, kiosk or retail estate | Hexnode or Intune | Unified endpoint coverage beyond Apple. |

The trade-off is administration, training and generally quote-led business pricing. It can be excessive for a small fleet needing only enrollment, apps and basic restrictions.
Iru (formerly Kandji): best for automation and operational simplicity
Iru is the current brand associated with the former Kandji product; older reviews may still say Kandji. The former pricing URL redirects from kandji.io/pricing to Iru’s pricing page. Iru is aimed at Apple-only and Apple-dominant organizations that want policy automation, rapid standardization and a user-friendly workflow without building every process manually. Public pricing was not visible on the reviewed page, so confirm package inclusions.
Rank #2
Microsoft lists Iru as a generally available third-party compliance partner for Intune, allowing device state to flow to Entra ID for Conditional Access: Microsoft’s partner list. Test unusual scripts, legacy applications, non-Apple endpoints and migration procedures before committing.
Mosyle: best value-oriented Apple specialist and education contender
Mosyle is a strong shortlist candidate for schools, districts and small or midsize Apple-only fleets. Its product family covers Apple management with editions such as Business, Fuse and OneK12; Microsoft lists Mosyle Fuse and Mosyle OneK12 as compliance partners. Edition boundaries, support and current pricing should be confirmed at Mosyle and Mosyle pricing. A lower license price does not by itself establish a lower total cost once support, patching, reporting and administrator time are included.
Addigy: best for MSPs and multi-tenant Mac operations
Addigy’s published pricing starts at $8.25 per Mac per month; its Security Suite starts at $16 per Mac per month. These are vendor-listed starting prices, while MSP rates, discounts and terms vary. iPhone, iPad and Apple TV management is an add-on. The Security Suite includes Apple MDM, SentinelOne EDR, 24/7 MDR, CVE tracking, Entra ID/Intune integration and enforcement for frameworks including CIS, NIST, CMMC and DISA STIG. Details are at Addigy pricing.
Addigy is especially suitable when delegated administration, tenant separation, bulk operations and customer-level reporting matter. An internal IT department managing one company may not need its MSP-oriented model. Clarify support SLAs, security-tool ownership and mobile-device costs.
Microsoft Intune: best for Microsoft-centric mixed estates
Intune is often the most operationally efficient choice when Windows, Microsoft 365, Entra ID and Conditional Access are already central. It supports automated enrollment for iOS/iPadOS and macOS devices purchased through Apple Business or Apple School Manager; see Microsoft’s enrollment guide.
Rank #3
Apple specialists can coexist with Intune as compliance partners. Jamf Pro, Iru, Addigy and Mosyle can manage Apple devices while sending compliance state to Entra ID. That relationship does not mean Intune manages every device setting. Apple depth, scripting, patching and user experience should be tested. Licensing depends on existing Microsoft 365 or Enterprise Mobility + Security entitlements; consult Intune pricing and license documentation.

Apple Business: best built-in baseline for very small organizations
Apple Business combines Apple procurement, managed accounts, apps, support, Blueprints and built-in device management. It is attractive when configurations are standard and there is little dedicated IT staff. Validate advanced scripts, third-party patching, detailed reporting, role separation and compliance requirements before replacing a specialist. Start at business.apple.com.
Jamf Now: best for straightforward small fleets
Jamf Now supports updates, Blueprints, app deployment, encryption enforcement, remote lock and wipe, passcode policies and inventory. Compared with Jamf Pro, Jamf Now lacks capabilities such as custom macOS scripts, Smart Groups, VPN configuration, advanced local-account management, dynamic inventory and broader third-party patching. Use the comparison PDF before selecting it for a growing Mac estate.
Hexnode: best for broad UEM coverage
Hexnode is a unified endpoint platform for organizations managing Apple alongside Android, Windows, ChromeOS or kiosk devices. See Hexnode UEM pricing. Apple-first teams may prefer a specialist, so verify supervision, Apple Business integration, declarative management, app patching and identity workflows for the chosen edition.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Recommendations by environment
10–50 Macs
Shortlist Apple Business, Iru, Mosyle, Jamf Now and SimpleMDM. Prioritize enrollment, apps, FileVault, updates, remote wipe, inventory, support and transparent administration. Avoid enterprise complexity unless scripting or compliance demands it.
100–1,000 Apple devices
Shortlist Jamf Pro, Iru, Mosyle and Addigy. Test dynamic groups, patching, Self Service, account workflows, key escrow, APIs, delegated roles and migration.
Microsoft-heavy mixed fleet
Compare Intune with Jamf Pro, Iru or Addigy integrated as an Intune compliance partner. Choose based on required Apple depth, not on the number of consoles alone.
Best Value
MSP
Prioritize Addigy or another platform with true tenant separation, customer roles, per-customer reporting, bulk actions, billing clarity and migration support.
K–12
Prioritize Mosyle or Jamf School/Pro with Apple School Manager. Test Shared iPad, Classroom, Schoolwork, app licensing, privacy, filtering and delegated administration. Apple’s education guidance is at Apple Support.
BYOD
Confirm the exact user-enrollment or account-driven mode, what administrators can see, whether work data is separated, and whether selective wipe is available. Never infer privacy behavior from a vendor’s generic “BYOD support” claim.
Run a proof of concept before signing
- Confirm Apple Business or Apple School Manager ownership and connect the candidate MDM.
- Enroll a new Mac, an existing Mac, an iPhone, an iPad and a representative BYOD device.
- Test Automated Device Enrollment, supervision and enrollment restrictions.
- Deploy Wi-Fi, VPN, certificates, identity settings, App Store apps and custom Mac apps.
- Test OS updates, FileVault enforcement and recovery-key escrow.
- Run remote lock, wipe, Lost Mode and Activation Lock recovery.
- Test offboarding, selective wipe, role-based administration, audit logs and compliance export.
- Measure administrator time, support response and documentation quality.
- Document exit: profile export, inventory export, key custody, Apple Business assignments and whether migration requires erasure.
Apple recommends testing shortlisted services with a small device group before selection: Apple’s trial guidance.
Risks that derail Apple MDM projects
- Ignoring supervision: organization-owned devices generally need supervision for the strongest controls.
- Confusing compliance with management: an Intune partner can report state to Entra ID without controlling every setting.
- Underestimating migration: Apple warns that changing MDM during deployment may require erasure and reenrollment.
- Letting certificates and tokens expire: APNs certificates, enrollment tokens, app licenses, TLS certificates, bootstrap tokens and recovery keys need ownership and renewal procedures.
- Measuring only license price: labor, patching, migration, support and security bundles often dominate TCO.
- Assuming every Apple platform is equal: score macOS, iOS/iPadOS, tvOS and shared-device workflows separately.
How to make the final decision
Use scenario-specific weights rather than a popularity ranking: Apple depth 25%, enrollment and lifecycle 15%, security and compliance 15%, app and patch management 15%, identity integrations 10%, administration 10%, support and migration 5%, and price/TCO 5%. Adjust those weights for a school, MSP or Microsoft-centric enterprise. In most cases, select two or three finalists, run the same proof-of-concept, and choose the platform that meets the required workflows with the least operational risk.
