Best Materia for Cloud, Tifa, Barret, and Aerith in Final Fantasy 7 Remake

There is no single best materia loadout for every battle in Final Fantasy VII Remake. A reliable starting point is to keep Cloud focused on close-range damage, Tifa on rapid physical pressure, Barret on ranged attacks or support, and Aerith on magic and healing. Then adjust the spells, support materia, and linked-slot pairings for the enemy, your equipment, and the encounter’s difficulty.

The setups below are flexible role templates rather than mathematically proven builds. Your available materia and weapon or armor slots change as you progress, and a materia equipped by one character cannot be used by another at the same time. Use the templates as a decision framework, not as four permanent prescriptions.

Quick answer: a practical starting setup for each character

The table gives you a sensible baseline before you know the next enemy’s weakness. “Priority” means what the character should contribute most often, not a requirement to fill every slot with that category.

Character Combat identity Start with Add or swap when
Cloud Close-range swordsman One elemental or offensive spell option, plus durability or utility that keeps him active in melee Use an Elemental pairing for a confirmed weakness, or move it when the target resists that element
Tifa Fast martial-arts pressure First Strike, ATB Assist, Steadfast Block, Parry, or HP Up according to your slots and preferred risk level Trade a defensive or ATB option for elemental coverage when the fight rewards a specific spell
Barret Ranged damage and flexible support Healing, Revival, Time, Barrier, Steadfast Block, HP Up, or MP Up as the party needs Shift toward support for a long boss fight or toward damage when another character covers recovery
Aerith Ranged magic specialist and healer Magic Up, MP Up, HP Up, healing, and an element that matches the encounter Increase survivability when she is being targeted, or replace an element after checking resistance

These role assignments follow the game’s descriptions of Cloud as a close-range sword fighter, Tifa as a martial artist, Barret as a gun-arm ranged attacker, and Aerith as a ranged, magic-oriented character. The official overview also explains that materia supplies spells, abilities, and summons through weapon and armor slots: PlayStation’s Final Fantasy VII Remake overview.

How materia, slots, and weaknesses determine a build

Materia is an ability system, not just a damage upgrade

Equipping materia gives a character access to spells, abilities, or summons. Magic materia improves through use, so a spell that is useful now can become a broader option later. That progression makes it sensible to keep a frequently used healing or elemental materia on the character who can reliably spend it, rather than moving every piece after every minor encounter.

Assess before committing to an element

Use Assess to inspect an enemy’s vulnerabilities and resistances before choosing an elemental attack. A weakness can justify assigning that element to Cloud, Tifa, Barret, or Aerith; resistance is a reason to remove or replace it. The official explanation of materia and Assess is available in the PlayStation guide.

Linked slots change what an Elemental pairing does

An Elemental materia paired with an elemental spell in linked slots can affect attacks when placed in a weapon. Put the same type of pairing in linked armor slots and it can provide elemental resistance instead. Check both the presence of a linked pair and its placement: an unlinked slot will not produce the intended weapon or armor effect. The current role-based setup guide also stresses checking the target’s weakness and your equipment’s linked slots: iTechGuides’ October 7, 2026 materia setup guide.

Inventory and equipment impose real trade-offs

There is no infinite pool of materia. If Cloud is carrying your only Healing materia, Barret and Aerith cannot use that same piece simultaneously. Likewise, a recommended pairing may be impossible until a weapon or armor piece supplies the required linked slots. Treat each build as the best use of what you currently own, not an instruction to equip items you have not found.

Cloud: close-range damage with enough utility to stay in the fight

Baseline role

Cloud’s sword-based, close-range style rewards a loadout that lets him remain near the target and continue acting. Start with one offensive or elemental option and reserve the remaining capacity for durability or utility. The goal is consistent melee uptime rather than filling every slot with another damage spell.

When to use an Elemental pairing

If Assess identifies a weakness and Cloud’s weapon has linked slots, pair Elemental with the matching spell to give his attacks that affinity. Confirm the pairing before the battle: the slots must be linked, and the weapon placement is what makes the combination affect attacks. If the enemy resists that element, remove the pairing or move it to a different character; keeping a resisted element equipped only because it worked in the previous room reduces your options.

What to put in the remaining slots

  • Keep a healing or recovery option on Cloud when he is the character you control most and may be away from the support characters.
  • Use HP Up or a defensive option when a boss can punish close-range mistakes.
  • Choose an ATB or utility option when the encounter rewards frequent abilities more than another spell.

Cloud is often the easiest character to leave on a general-purpose setup because he can contribute immediately with his sword. Still, switch his element and defensive coverage when the enemy group or equipment changes; a general baseline is not a substitute for Assess.

Tifa: fast physical pressure and rapid action cycles

Baseline role

Tifa’s martial-arts style is best served by materia that helps her begin acting quickly, build momentum, and survive the danger of staying close. Her strongest template is therefore a fast physical-pressure setup with selective defense, not a second copy of Aerith’s magic kit.

Useful options from the available pool

  • First Strike: gives the opening of an encounter more immediate momentum when the slot and your inventory allow it.
  • ATB Assist: fits a party that rotates characters and wants Tifa’s actions to help maintain ability access.
  • Steadfast Block: suits a player who blocks while waiting for an opening and wants more resilience during pressure.
  • Parry: supports a more mobile, timing-focused style when you are comfortable taking deliberate risks.
  • HP Up: is the safer choice when Tifa is being hit before she can convert her speed into damage.

These are options, not a checklist. First Strike and ATB Assist compete for limited space with elemental, healing, or defensive coverage. Select the combination that matches the fight and the way you control her.

When Tifa should carry an element

Give Tifa an Elemental pairing when Assess identifies a weakness and Cloud or Aerith is not already covering it. Her speed can make the element available often, but do not force an elemental pairing against resistance. If the fight is mostly physical and the target has no useful elemental weakness, her fast-action and defensive choices usually provide more value.

Barret: choose between ranged damage, support, and endurance

Baseline role

Barret’s gun-arm lets him contribute while staying at range, so he can carry support materia without abandoning the party’s damage plan. Decide whether the encounter needs a second damage dealer, a recovery anchor, or a durable character who can keep acting while others reposition.

Support-oriented Barret

For a demanding boss or a party with limited recovery, assign Barret Healing or Revival and consider Time or Barrier. HP Up and MP Up help him remain useful across a longer battle. This arrangement is especially practical when Aerith must spend her own capacity on offensive magic or when she is frequently interrupted.

  • Players can enjoy immersive battles by using the dual sense PlayStation 5 controller with its haptic feedback integration

Damage-oriented Barret

If Cloud or Tifa already covers healing and revival, Barret can dedicate more space to an offensive element or utility that improves his ranged contribution. Keep at least the recovery the encounter genuinely requires; removing every support option for a small increase in damage can make a difficult fight less stable.

Defense and positioning

Steadfast Block and HP Up are sensible choices when Barret is being targeted despite his range. His distance can reduce some pressure, but it does not make him immune to area attacks or boss mechanics. Reassign defensive materia when a specific encounter repeatedly interrupts his actions.

Aerith: magic damage, healing, and the party’s MP budget

Baseline role

Aerith’s ranged attacks and magic-focused identity make her the natural home for elemental spells and party healing when her equipment and MP supply support it. Build her to solve the encounter’s magical problem first, then use the remaining slots for survivability and resource management.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Core priorities

  • Magic Up: supports a magic-damage or healing-centered role.
  • MP Up: helps her sustain spells through a prolonged encounter.
  • HP Up: protects the character the party may rely on for recovery.
  • Healing: makes her the dedicated healer when the rest of the group is built for pressure.
  • Elemental coverage: gives her an appropriate spell when Assess reveals a weakness.

Do not assume Aerith must carry every support option. If Barret has Healing and Revival, Aerith can use more offensive or elemental coverage; if Barret is a damage specialist, preserve Aerith’s recovery capacity and MP.

Survivability and placement

When enemies focus Aerith, HP Up and defensive choices can be more important than adding another element. Keep her positioned to use ranged attacks and spells, but be prepared to move or switch characters when an enemy group makes her a target. The game allows mid-combat character switching, so you can hand control to a sturdier character while retaining Aerith’s magic role in the party.

How to rebuild the party for a specific encounter

  1. Inspect the enemy with Assess. Record weaknesses, resistances, and any information that changes whether an element is worth a slot.
  2. Choose one character to carry the elemental answer. Prefer the character with the available linked slots and the role that can use the spell consistently.
  3. Verify the slot linkage. Place Elemental and the matching spell in the linked weapon slots for an attack affinity, or in linked armor slots when resistance is the objective.
  4. Assign recovery before extra damage. Make sure someone has Healing and that the party has an answer for revival or other recovery needs when the encounter is demanding.
  5. Fill defensive and ATB utility gaps. Use HP Up, MP Up, Steadfast Block, Parry, First Strike, ATB Assist, Time, or Barrier according to the threat and your preferred controls.
  6. Check the MP burden. A magic-heavy party may need MP Up or a second source of support so that one character is not responsible for every spell.
  7. Recheck after changing equipment. A new weapon or armor piece can add, remove, or rearrange linked slots, invalidating a pairing you used earlier.
  8. Switch characters during the battle. The game supports mid-combat switching; use it to put the right role in control while the rest of the party continues to cover healing, ranged pressure, or melee damage.

This process reflects the game’s emphasis on adapting to enemy groups and larger foes rather than locking the party into one permanent arrangement. The official system overview describes the party’s distinct combat styles and the need to respond to different enemies: PlayStation.

Loadouts by situation

Situation Cloud Tifa Barret Aerith
Exploration General offense plus one flexible utility or element First Strike, ATB Assist, or Parry according to your control style Ranged damage with one recovery option if supplies are limited Healing, Magic Up, and an element that covers likely enemy groups
Elemental boss weakness Elemental pairing if linked weapon slots are available Fast physical pressure; add the element only if no better carrier exists Support or ranged damage, depending on who is healing Matching elemental spell, Magic Up, and enough MP or healing to sustain the plan
Long or hard-mode fight Durability and reliable melee uptime HP Up plus a defensive or ATB option that you can use consistently Healing, Revival, Barrier, Time, HP Up, or MP Up as party coverage requires Healing, MP Up, Magic Up, HP Up, and only the elemental coverage the target rewards

Hard mode makes the balance between damage, healing, defense, ATB utility, HP, and MP more consequential. A secondary build guide discusses Healing, Prayer, Revival, Barrier, HP Up, MP Up, and defensive or ATB options as considerations for difficult fights; these are recommendations, not universal requirements: GameWith’s FF7 Remake materia and builds guide.

Common materia mistakes and how to correct them

Using an element without checking resistance

Symptom: the spell or weapon pairing feels weak against a target. Fix: Assess first, then remove the resisted element or move it to a character who can use a different weakness.

Pairing materia in unlinked slots

Symptom: Elemental is equipped, but attacks or armor do not gain the expected affinity. Fix: inspect the equipment screen and place Elemental beside the spell in a visibly linked pair; also confirm whether the pair is in weapon or armor slots.

Giving every character damage and nobody recovery

Symptom: the party can hurt an enemy but cannot recover after a mistake. Fix: reserve Healing and, for a demanding encounter, Revival or another recovery option on the character best able to spend it safely.

Making Aerith the only source of every support action

Symptom: Aerith runs out of MP or is interrupted and the party loses healing and magic at once. Fix: move selected support responsibilities to Barret or another available character, add MP Up where appropriate, and leave Aerith enough capacity for the fight’s most important spell.

Leaving a setup unchanged after an equipment upgrade

Symptom: a previously useful pairing no longer fits or a character loses a needed slot. Fix: revisit the materia screen whenever weapons, armor, or party composition changes.

How to choose between two otherwise good options

When two materia appear equally useful, use this order of questions:

  1. Does the enemy have a weakness or resistance that makes one option clearly better?
  2. Are the required linked slots available on the character who can use the option most reliably?
  3. Does the party already have healing, revival, defense, and MP coverage?
  4. Will the option help during the entire encounter, or only during its opening moments?
  5. Does it fit the way you control the character—for example, blocking for Steadfast Block or deliberate movement for Parry?

This framework prevents a nominally powerful materia from displacing a support tool the encounter actually requires. It also explains why the best setup changes between exploration, a weakness-driven boss fight, and a hard-mode challenge.

Frequently asked questions

Can I keep one permanent materia setup for all four characters?

You can, but it will be less effective than adapting to enemy weaknesses, linked slots, and party needs. A general baseline is useful for exploration; bosses and difficult encounters justify a rebuild.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should Elemental always go on Cloud?

No. Cloud is a natural carrier when his weapon has linked slots and the enemy is weak to the chosen element, but Tifa, Barret, or Aerith may be better depending on available slots, who is already covering healing, and who can use the spell consistently.

Is Aerith always the healer?

No. Aerith is well suited to healing because of her magic-oriented role, but Barret can carry Healing, Revival, Barrier, Time, HP Up, or MP Up when the party needs a ranged support character. Sharing recovery responsibilities can protect the party from losing all support when Aerith is interrupted.

What should I prioritize in hard mode?

Prioritize the coverage the encounter tests: healing and revival, defensive options, HP and MP capacity, and enough ATB utility to act reliably. Add elemental damage only when Assess and the linked slots make it worthwhile.

Why does my Elemental materia not change attacks?

The Elemental and spell materia must occupy linked slots, and the pair’s location matters. Weapon placement affects attacks; armor placement provides elemental resistance. Recheck both the link and the equipment side after changing gear.
