In the United States, a genuine NIOSH-approved N95 is the clearest-supported option. A KN95 that meets its applicable standard and fits well can also filter particles, but the label does not mean it is NIOSH-approved or guarantee its quality or fit. Surgical masks are loose-fitting and are not designed to reliably protect the wearer from airborne particles.
How N95, KN95, and surgical masks compare for smog
These labels describe different standards and kinds of face coverings; they do not guarantee the same protection on every face. For particle pollution, the practical questions are whether the product is a genuine respirator, whether it meets a recognized standard, and whether it seals well when worn.

| Type | What the label means | Practical guidance for smog particles |
|---|---|---|
| NIOSH-approved N95 | A NIOSH-approved filtering facepiece respirator. The N95 class requires at least 95% filtration efficiency under the standard test; that figure describes filter performance, not a guarantee of 95% less exposure for every wearer. | In U.S. guidance, the clearest-supported choice when genuine, correctly worn, and well fitting. Look for NIOSH and N95 markings and a testing and certification number. NIOSH explains filtering facepiece respirator classifications and markings. |
| KN95 | A respirator conforming to an international standard, commonly a Chinese standard. It is not automatically NIOSH-approved. | Can be a reasonable particle-filtering alternative if it meets its applicable standard and seals to your face. Assess the specific product rather than assuming the label guarantees quality or fit. CDC compares respirator standards and fit considerations. |
| Surgical mask | A loose-fitting medical face covering intended for barrier purposes, not a tight-sealing respirator. | Not a reliable choice for protecting the wearer from smog aerosols because air can leak around its edges. CDC/NIOSH explains how surgical masks differ from respirators. |
NIOSH-approved N95s are tested and certified through the U.S. system. CDC notes that products made to international standards may not have the same quality-assurance requirements. That distinction does not mean every KN95 is poor or every N95 will fit: evaluate the specific product and your own seal.
Why fit can matter as much as the filter
A respirator is intended to direct inhaled air through its filter. If it leaks around the nose, cheeks, or chin, some air bypasses the filter. Choose a size and style that covers your nose and sits under your chin, then follow the package instructions for a seal check every time you put it on. If you notice leakage, try another size or style. Facial hair where the respirator seals can leave gaps.
#1 Best Overall
- NIOSH-APPROVED N95 for at least 95 percent filtration efficiency against certain non-oil-based particles and aerosols
- 3M COOL FLOW EXHALATION VALVE helps direct exhaled air downward and allows for easy breathing
- UP TO 50% EASIER BREATHING. Compared to non-valved 3M 8200 Testing
- ADVANCED FILTER MEDIA for easy breathing
- ADJUSTABLE M-NOSECLIP helps provide a custom and secure seal
A seal check is not the same as formal fit testing. In workplace respiratory-protection programs, fit testing is used to verify that a particular respirator model and size fits a worker. Public users should follow the product instructions and not treat a quick seal check as a substitute for that supervised process. NIOSH provides information on respirators and fit testing.
What a particulate respirator does—and does not—filter
N95 and KN95 respirators are particulate filters. They do not filter harmful gases or vapors and do not supply oxygen. Since “smog” can describe a mix of pollutants, a particulate respirator addresses only the particle component; it does not remove every outdoor air hazard. CDC describes the limits of community respirators.
Rank #2
- NIOSH-APPROVED: Organic Vapor/P100 combination cartridge helps reduce expose to certain organic vapors and provides at least 99.97% filtration efficiency against solids, liquid aerosols, and oil-based particulate
- OIL-PROOF FILTERS: Included P100 particulate filters are oil-proof (Use according to manufacturer’s time use restrictions when oil aerosols are present)
- USE FOR: Relief from certain non-harmful particles and annoying odors
- KIT INCLUDES: One facepiece and one pair of replaceable organic vapor/P100 combination cartridges (#60921)
- 3M BAYONET CONNECTION: Makes it compatible with a wide range of 3M cartridges and filters
For wildfire smoke specifically, EPA says NIOSH-approved N95 respirators are “more than 95% efficient at removing wildfire smoke particles in the PM2.5 size fraction.” That is a filtration statement about smoke particles, not a promise of a particular health outcome or protection from gases. EPA’s outdoor-exposure guidance explains the context.

How to choose and check an N95
- Look for the approval markings. For a NIOSH-approved N95, check the respirator for the NIOSH name and N95 class, plus its testing and certification number. An online listing that says “N95” alone does not establish NIOSH approval. Use NIOSH’s filtering facepiece respirator guidance to understand the markings.
- Choose for your face, not just the label. The respirator should cover the nose and fit under the chin. Follow the package directions for checking the seal each time you put it on; switch size or style if air leaks at the edges.
- Follow the specific product’s care instructions. Replace a disposable N95 if it becomes wet, dirty, or damaged, or if stretched straps stop it from fitting snugly. Do not wash it or put it in an oven or microwave to sterilize it. CDC’s N95 use instructions cover fit, replacement, and care.
Reduce exposure when particle pollution is high
A mask is only one part of reducing exposure. EPA advises spending less time outdoors and reducing activity when particle pollution is high. If smoky conditions make outdoor exposure necessary, EPA says an N95 reduces exposure to fine smoke particles when it fits snugly and leaves no gaps. Follow local air-quality advisories and use indoor air cleaning as part of a broader smoke-exposure plan.

- NIOSH APPROVED: For at least 95 percent filtration efficiency against certain non-oil based particles
- COMPATIBLE: With a variety of protective eyewear and hearing protection
- ADJUSTABLE NOSECLIP: Reduces potential for eyewear fogging and helps provide a custom and secure seal
- TWO-STRAP DESIGN: With welded dual point attachement that helps provide a secure fit
- APPLICATIONS: Gringing, sanding, sweeping, bagging, and other dusty operations. Metalworking, chemical processing, construction, and metal processing
EPA recommends having NIOSH-approved N95 respirators available for necessary outdoor exposure. A portable HEPA air cleaner may help with indoor particle exposure, but it is a separate measure, not a substitute for a well-fitting respirator outdoors. EPA outlines ways to reduce outdoor exposure and its wildfire guidance covers smoke exposure and indoor air quality.
Quick Recap
