For most WordPress sites, Wordfence is the best documented all-purpose malware scanner in 2026. Its scan checks files, backdoors, shells, malicious URLs, suspicious content, file changes, public files, password strength, and vulnerable WordPress core, plugins, themes, and versions. Wordfence Free includes an endpoint firewall and malware scanner, although its firewall rules and malware signatures arrive with a documented 30-day delay.
Choose MalCare when cloud scanning and one-click automated cleanup matter most, Sucuri when remote visibility and file-integrity monitoring are the priority, Jetpack Scan when malware scanning should be bundled with backups and a web application firewall (WAF), and WPScan when you need vulnerability intelligence to complement—not replace—a malware scanner.

A malware scanner looks for evidence that a site has been compromised. Depending on the product, that evidence can include altered PHP files, backdoors, web shells, injected scripts, malicious URLs, suspicious database or post content, unexpected file changes, and known malware signatures. Some scanners also compare your installation with a known-good WordPress core or plugin baseline.

A vulnerability scanner performs a different job. It checks whether your WordPress version, plugins, or themes contain publicly known security weaknesses. A site can have no detectable malware and still be vulnerable, or contain an unknown compromise that a vulnerability database does not list. A sensible security setup therefore uses malware detection and vulnerability monitoring together.
Best scanners at a glance
| Scanner | Best fit | Documented capabilities | Important limitation or qualifier |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wordfence | Most sites needing broad, on-server detection | File, code, backdoor, shell, URL, content, integrity, password, core, plugin, theme, and version checks; endpoint firewall | Free firewall rules and malware signatures are delivered with a 30-day delay |
| MalCare | Cloud scanning and automated cleanup | Cloud scanning using more than 100 intelligent signals, vulnerability alerts, firewall protection, and one-click automated malware removal | Its documented differentiator is cloud processing; exact results depend on the site and the signals detected |
| Sucuri | Remote visibility and integrity monitoring | Plugin checks for malware, viruses, blacklist status, errors, outdated software, malicious code, and file integrity; SiteCheck views the site externally | Remote checks cannot see every server-side condition; the evidence does not establish one-click cleanup in the plugin |
| Jetpack Scan | Jetpack users wanting an integrated security plan | Real-time malware scanning, backups, WAF, and one-click fixes in the Security plan | Pricing researched in 2026 showed a first-year promotional rate of $9.95 per month billed yearly, compared with $19.95 per month regularly |
| WPScan | Vulnerability enumeration alongside a malware scanner | Checks WordPress, installed plugins, and themes through API calls and reports vulnerabilities from the WPScan database; default daily interval | Primarily vulnerability intelligence, not a malware-removal replacement |
1. Wordfence: best all-purpose choice for most sites
Wordfence has the broadest documented scan scope in this comparison. Its documentation says a scan examines all files on a WordPress website for malicious code, backdoors, and shells installed by attackers. The documented checks also cover malicious URLs, suspicious content, file changes, public files, password strength, and vulnerable WordPress core, plugins, themes, and versions.
The Wordfence plugin description lists more than 44,000 known malware variants. Wordfence also states that its security technology protects more than 5 million websites. Those figures describe the vendor’s current product and plugin listings, not an independently audited detection benchmark.

- An endpoint firewall running at the WordPress installation.
- A malware scanner that checks the site’s files and WordPress components.
- Alerts for findings that require review or action.
The critical qualification is freshness. In the free tier, Wordfence documents a 30-day delay for firewall rules and malware signatures. That delay does not make the scanner useless: it can still identify many compromised files and configuration problems. It does mean a high-risk or frequently attacked site should consider whether delayed protection is acceptable.
How to scan with Wordfence
- Install and activate the Wordfence plugin from the WordPress administration area.
- Open the Wordfence security dashboard and start a complete scan rather than relying only on a scheduled check.
- Let the scan finish before interpreting the results. Large sites can take longer because the scanner examines files and WordPress components.
- Review each finding’s file path, explanation, and recommended action. Do not automatically delete a file that may be a legitimate customization.
- Before changing files, create a verified backup. Quarantine or repair only after comparing the finding with a clean copy of the same WordPress, plugin, or theme version.
- Update vulnerable core, plugins, and themes after remediation, then run another scan to confirm that the finding is gone.
When Wordfence is the right choice
Use it as the primary scanner when you want one plugin to inspect both compromise indicators and WordPress vulnerabilities. It is also a practical starting point for site owners who need a free option and can accept the documented 30-day delay. Pair it with prompt updates, strong administrator authentication, backups, and a second opinion when an incident is serious.
2. MalCare: best documented cloud scanning and automated cleanup
MalCare’s defining feature is that its documented scanning method runs in the cloud. Its WordPress.org listing describes more than 100 intelligent signals, vulnerability alerts, firewall protection, and one-click automated malware removal.

Cloud processing changes the operational trade-off. The scan work is designed to occur away from the hosting account rather than consuming all of the site’s PHP execution capacity. That can be attractive on constrained hosting, but “cloud-based” is not a guarantee that every site will experience zero impact: connecting the service, collecting site data, and applying a cleanup still involve the WordPress installation and its hosting environment.

- Install and connect the MalCare plugin to the site you want to inspect.
- Start the cloud scan and wait for the service to analyze the site using its documented signals.
- Separate vulnerability alerts from confirmed malware findings. A vulnerable plugin is not proof that it has been exploited.
- Use the one-click removal workflow only after making a backup and checking that critical custom code is not being flagged.
- Run a follow-up scan, update affected software, and investigate administrator accounts, passwords, and hosting logs if the site was compromised.
When MalCare is the better fit
Choose MalCare when cleanup speed and a guided automated workflow are more important than keeping all analysis on the server. It is especially useful for owners who are uncomfortable editing infected files manually. Automated removal should still be treated as a controlled change: preserve a backup, review what was changed, and test the public site afterward.
3. Sucuri: strongest for remote visibility and file integrity
Sucuri offers two complementary perspectives. Its WordPress plugin automatically scans for known malware, viruses, blacklist status, website errors, outdated software, and malicious code. It also creates a known-good file-integrity baseline so later changes can be identified.
Sucuri SiteCheck works as an external visitor. It examines the site’s externally visible source and can identify malicious code that appears in that output, along with core-file integrity problems. This remote view is valuable because an attacker may hide behavior from a local plugin or inject content that is visible only in rendered pages.
What remote scanning can and cannot tell you
- It can reveal: malicious scripts or links visible in public pages, blacklist warnings, and differences in publicly accessible core files.
- It may miss: dormant server-side backdoors, malware restricted to authenticated users, database content that is not rendered publicly, or files inaccessible to an external request.
- It complements local scanning: a remote result should be investigated alongside server files, WordPress logs, and a local integrity check.
How to use Sucuri for a scan
- Install and activate the Sucuri plugin for the WordPress site.
- Run its malware and integrity checks, then review malware, blacklist, error, outdated-software, and changed-file findings separately.
- Use SiteCheck from outside the administrator session to inspect what an ordinary visitor can see.
- Compare changed files with a clean copy of the corresponding WordPress or plugin release.
- Restore or repair verified compromises from a clean backup or package, then run both local and remote checks again.
Sucuri is a strong choice when you need evidence about the public-facing site and a continuing baseline of file changes. The plugin documentation establishes detection and monitoring functions; it does not establish that the plugin itself provides one-click automated cleanup. Plan remediation accordingly.

4. Jetpack Scan: best when backups, WAF, and fixes belong together
Jetpack Scan is part of the Jetpack Security plan. The plan bundles real-time malware scanning with backups, a WAF, and one-click fixes. This integrated approach is useful when you would rather manage protection, recovery, and remediation through one service than assemble separate plugins.

Pricing and billing context
The Jetpack pricing page showed a first-year promotional price of $9.95 per month billed yearly when researched in 2026, versus a regular price of $19.95 per month. Promotional pricing can change, so confirm the amount and renewal terms on the checkout page before subscribing.
How to evaluate Jetpack Scan
- Confirm that the Security plan’s real-time scan, backup, WAF, and one-click-fix features are included in the plan presented to you.
- Connect the WordPress site and complete the initial scan.
- Check whether findings are accompanied by a one-click fix and whether a restorable backup exists before applying it.
- After remediation, test logins, forms, checkout pages, and other site functions that could be affected by a file change.
Jetpack Scan is most compelling for an existing Jetpack user or a site owner who values an integrated recovery path. If you only need a malware scan and already have dependable backups and a WAF, compare the added bundle against your current setup.
5. WPScan: use it for vulnerability intelligence, not cleanup
WPScan checks the WordPress version and each installed plugin and theme through API calls. It reports vulnerabilities from the WPScan database and uses a default daily scan interval. That makes it valuable for finding outdated components and known weaknesses before an attacker exploits them.
WPScan does not occupy the same category as a full malware scanner. A vulnerability report tells you that a component may be exploitable; it does not prove that malicious code is present or remove an existing backdoor. Run WPScan alongside Wordfence, MalCare, Sucuri, or Jetpack Scan rather than substituting it for one of them.
A practical WPScan workflow
- Connect the plugin or service to its API so installed components can be checked against the vulnerability database.
- Review the WordPress, plugin, and theme findings and note the affected versions.
- Update or replace vulnerable components from trusted sources after taking a backup.
- Run a malware scan separately to check whether the vulnerability was already exploited.
- Keep the daily checks enabled and investigate new alerts promptly.
How to choose the right scanner
Choose by detection scope
- Choose Wordfence for the widest documented combination of file, code, URL, content, integrity, password, and component checks.
- Choose Sucuri when seeing the site as an external visitor and tracking a known-good file baseline are central requirements.
- Choose MalCare when cloud analysis and automated cleanup are the deciding factors.
- Choose Jetpack Scan when real-time detection must be packaged with backups, WAF protection, and one-click fixes.
- Add WPScan when vulnerability enumeration is needed, regardless of which malware scanner you select.
Choose by response model
| Need | Most suitable documented option | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Broad local inspection | Wordfence | Checks files, malicious code, URLs, content, integrity, and vulnerable components. |
| Off-site scan processing | MalCare | Uses cloud scanning with more than 100 intelligent signals. |
| External visibility | Sucuri | SiteCheck examines the public site as an external visitor. |
| Integrated recovery and protection | Jetpack Scan | Bundles real-time scanning, backups, WAF, and one-click fixes. |
| Known-vulnerability tracking | WPScan | Checks installed versions against its vulnerability database on a default daily interval. |
How to scan a WordPress site safely
- Back up first. Keep a restorable copy of files and the database before deleting, repairing, or updating anything.
- Run a primary malware scan. Select the scanner that matches your architecture and risk tolerance.
- Run a second perspective. For example, combine a local scanner with Sucuri’s external SiteCheck, or pair malware scanning with WPScan vulnerability checks.
- Classify every alert. Separate confirmed malicious code, suspicious changes, outdated software, and vulnerabilities. They require different actions.
- Contain the site if compromise is active. Restrict administrative access, change credentials from a clean device, and preserve evidence before making extensive edits.
- Repair from known-clean sources. Replace compromised core, plugin, and theme files with clean versions rather than copying uncertain files from the infected installation.
- Update and harden. Patch vulnerable components, remove unused plugins and themes, enforce strong administrator passwords, and review accounts and permissions.
- Rescan and test. Confirm that alerts clear, then test public pages, forms, logins, commerce functions, and scheduled jobs.
- Continue monitoring. Enable the scanner’s available alerts and schedule, and investigate unexpected file or account changes promptly.
Common pitfalls and how to avoid them
Confusing a vulnerability with an infection
A vulnerable plugin is a risk indicator, not proof of malware. Patch the component, then perform a malware scan and inspect unexpected changes.
Assuming one clean scan proves the site is safe
Signatures and heuristics cannot guarantee detection of every compromise. A second scanner, remote inspection, file-integrity comparison, and review of accounts and logs provide better coverage.

Deleting flagged files without a backup
Legitimate custom code can resemble obfuscated malware. Preserve a backup and compare the file with the official version or a known-good repository before deleting it.
Ignoring scan freshness
Wordfence Free’s 30-day delay for firewall rules and malware signatures is material for sites facing active attacks. Consider a current paid tier or another control if delayed updates do not fit your risk.
Expecting a scanner to be a complete security program
Scanning does not replace updates, backups, least-privilege accounts, secure hosting, WAF protection, or incident response. Treat the scanner as one layer in a maintenance process.
Is there a proven “highest detection rate”?
No directly comparable independent 2026 detection-accuracy benchmark is established by the cited product materials. Vendor claims such as the number of protected sites, malware variants, or scanning signals describe product scope, not a head-to-head laboratory result. Select based on architecture, freshness, remediation, monitoring, and operational fit rather than an unsupported ranking.
Recommended setups by site type
Small brochure or portfolio site
Start with Wordfence for broad scanning, keep WordPress and extensions updated, maintain tested backups, and add WPScan if you want daily vulnerability intelligence.
Business site on constrained hosting
Consider MalCare’s cloud scanning to reduce the amount of analysis performed on the hosting account. Keep backups independent of the site and verify automated cleanup before applying it.
Best Value
Public site under active monitoring
Use Sucuri’s integrity baseline and external SiteCheck alongside a local scanner. The combination gives visibility into both server files and public output.
Site owner wanting one integrated plan
Jetpack Scan is the logical fit when real-time malware scanning, backups, WAF protection, and one-click fixes should be managed together. Check the current renewal price, not only the first-year promotion.
Agency or administrator managing vulnerabilities
Use a malware scanner for compromise detection and WPScan for version-based vulnerability reporting. Establish a daily alert review and a documented patching process.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Wordfence Free enough for a WordPress site?
It provides an endpoint firewall and malware scanner and can be capable for lower-risk sites. Its documented 30-day delay for firewall rules and malware signatures is the main limitation; sites facing active or higher-risk threats may need fresher protection.
Does MalCare slow down a WordPress site?
MalCare documents cloud scanning, so the analysis is designed to run off-site rather than entirely on the hosting account. Connection, data collection, and cleanup still involve the WordPress installation, so no scanner can promise zero operational impact on every host.
Can Sucuri remove malware automatically?
The documented plugin capabilities cover scanning, blacklist checks, errors, outdated software, malicious code, and file-integrity monitoring. The cited documentation does not establish one-click automated cleanup in the plugin, so plan for guided or manual remediation unless your specific service includes removal.
What is the difference between WPScan and a malware scanner?
WPScan primarily checks WordPress, plugins, and themes against a vulnerability database. A malware scanner looks for evidence of an existing compromise. Use both when you need vulnerability intelligence and infection detection.
