For pocket carry, choose the Milwaukee 2011R; for one light that can be worn, held, or attached to steel, choose the COAST TXM55R; for classified hazardous locations, evaluate the exact Streamlight Dualie Rechargeable SKU and its optional magnetic clip. Those are different solutions, not interchangeable “magnetic-base” designs. A base magnet, body magnets, and a magnetic clip each put the light in a different place and aim it differently.
The specifications below come from the manufacturers’ product pages or data sheet accessed in October 2026. They are published claims, not results from a controlled side-by-side test. Magnet strength can vary with steel thickness, paint, rust, curvature, vibration, and the flashlight’s angle, so confirm the attachment in your actual workplace before relying on it overhead.

What “magnetic base” means in practice
Searches for a magnetic base flashlight often combine three constructions:
- Magnet in the tail or base: the light stands against a vertical steel panel or attaches at its rear. This is the arrangement specified for the Milwaukee 2011R.
- Magnets built into the body: a work light can stick along its side or another designed surface. COAST describes the TXM55R as a magnetic work light with built-in magnets.
- Magnetic clip: a removable or integrated clip carries the magnet, so the light attaches wherever that clip can reach. The Streamlight Dualie Rechargeable page lists its magnetic clip as optional; the Dualie 3AA Magnet includes a magnetic clip.
The attachment point determines the beam angle. A tail magnet usually points the lens away from the steel surface, while a side-mounted work light can spread light across a panel. A clip may let you rotate or hang the light but can shift the center of gravity. Before comparing lumens, decide where the light must attach and whether the beam needs to point straight ahead, down, or across a work area.

A magnet only helps when there is a suitable ferrous surface. Aluminum, copper, wood, drywall, most stainless steel, and many painted or composite panels will not hold it reliably. Thin sheet metal may support a light in still air but release it under vibration. Treat a magnetic mount as a positioning aid, not as fall protection.
At-a-glance comparison
| Model | Mounting design | Output and runtimes | Power | Protection and safety claims |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Milwaukee 2011R | Magnetic base; reversible metal clip | 500 lm for 3.5 h; 100 lm for 16 h; 10 lm for 75 h | Built-in rechargeable battery; USB-C; onboard battery indicator | IP67; 4 m impact rating; two-year warranty |
| COAST TXM55R | Built-in magnets; handheld, headlamp, or magnetic work light | Turbo 1,500 lm; high-output listing 600 lm for 4.25 h; Moon Glow up to 73 h; 212 m beam distance | Included ZITHION-X rechargeable battery or two CR123 batteries (not included); USB-C | IP54 water/dust resistance |
| Streamlight Dualie Rechargeable | Optional magnetic clip; spot/flood body design | 230 lm spot for 10 h; 110 lm flood for 20 h; 325 lm combined for 7 h | Rechargeable lithium-ion battery | IP67; waterproof to 1 m for 30 minutes; 2 m impact testing; manufacturer-listed hazardous-location classifications |

“Lumens” and runtime entries are mode-specific. The TXM55R’s 73-hour figure is its Moon Glow mode, not its 1,500-lumen Turbo mode. Likewise, the Streamlight combined figures use both beams at once. Do not use a maximum-lumen number as a proxy for endurance.
Milwaukee 2011R: compact everyday carry with a true base magnet
The Milwaukee Rechargeable 500L Everyday Carry Flashlight with Magnet (2011R) is the most straightforward fit when you want a pocket flashlight that can stand or attach at its tail. Milwaukee specifies a magnetic base and a reversible metal clip, giving you two hands-free options without adding a separate accessory.
Output and endurance
Its three manufacturer-listed modes are:
- 500 lumens for 3.5 hours: the maximum-output setting for illuminating a nearby task.
- 100 lumens for 16 hours: a practical general-use level when you need a full shift or extended troubleshooting session.
- 10 lumens for 75 hours: a low-output inspection or navigation setting.
Milwaukee calls the output TRUEVIEW High Definition Output and describes the light as compact enough to carry every day. The product description states: “Our Rechargeable 500L Everyday Carry Flashlight w/ Magnet allows you to work hands-free and delivers 500 lumens of TRUEVIEW™ High Definition Output while maintaining a compact size designed to fit in your pocket and carry at all times.” That is vendor product copy, not an independent optical measurement.
Charging, status, and protection
The 2011R has a built-in rechargeable battery and USB-C charging. An onboard battery indicator lets you check remaining charge before starting a job. Because the cell is integrated, you cannot restore operation by swapping in disposable batteries; carry a charged spare light if a long outage or remote repair is possible.

Milwaukee lists IP67 water and dust protection and a 4-meter impact rating. IP67 combines dust protection with temporary immersion protection under the applicable test conditions; it does not mean the USB-C port can be left open in water. The 4-meter figure is a published impact claim, not a guarantee against every drop onto every surface. A two-year warranty is also listed.
Best fit and limitations
Choose the 2011R when a small light must ride in a pocket, clip to clothing, or attach by its tail to a steel cabinet, vehicle body, or electrical enclosure. The base magnet is useful only where the tail can face the work area; if the panel is behind you or the task requires a broad side-facing beam, a body-magnet work light may be easier to position. No independent magnet-holding comparison was available, so test the actual surface and angle.
COAST TXM55R: one light for head, hand, and magnetic work positions
COAST positions the rechargeable TXM55R as a three-in-one light: headlamp, handheld flashlight, and magnetic work light. That flexibility matters for inspections where you move between a ladder, a machine panel, and a close-up task. Its mounting system uses built-in magnets rather than the 2011R’s specifically identified tail magnet.
Beam and mode expectations
The TXM55R is listed at up to 1,500 lumens and a 212-meter beam distance. Turbo is the 1,500-lumen setting, while the listed high-output runtime is 4.25 hours at 600 lumens. COAST also lists up to 73 hours in Moon Glow mode. Those numbers describe different modes: the 73-hour maximum cannot be assigned to Turbo, and the 600-lumen runtime should not be presented as endurance at 1,500 lumens.
A focusing beam can help when you need to inspect a distant component, while a lower, wider setting is generally easier on reflective machinery and close work. Rotate or place the light so the magnetic contact remains fully seated; a sharply angled body can reduce the effective holding force.

Battery choices
Charging is USB-C. The package includes a ZITHION-X rechargeable battery, and the light is compatible with two CR123 batteries. COAST states that the CR123 cells are not included. This gives you a replaceable-battery fallback, but verify polarity, cell type, and the manufacturer’s approved battery instructions before substituting cells. Do not assume any two similarly sized lithium batteries are equivalent.

When its versatility is worth the trade-off
The TXM55R is the logical choice when wearing the light on your head is as important as attaching it to steel. A headlamp keeps the beam aligned with your view while climbing or walking; the magnetic mode frees both hands at a panel; handheld use gives you quick control for searching. The trade-off is a more complex mounting system and an IP54 rating, which indicates less protection than the IP67 claims listed for the Milwaukee and rechargeable Dualie. Use it where that protection level matches the environment.
Streamlight Dualie Rechargeable: spot, flood, and classified-work considerations
The Streamlight Dualie Rechargeable is described as an intrinsically safe spot/flood flashlight with an optional magnetic clip. The exact clip configuration and hazardous-location rating depend on the selected model or SKU, so check the package and certification marking rather than assuming every Dualie includes the accessory.
Independent spot and flood modes
Streamlight lists 230 lumens from the spot beam for 10 hours and 110 lumens from the flood beam for 20 hours. Using both beams together produces 325 lumens for 7 hours. A spot beam reaches farther and isolates a target; a flood beam covers a nearby work surface with less aiming. Combined mode is useful when you need both orientation and task light but consumes the battery faster.
Construction and battery
The rechargeable model uses a lithium-ion battery. Streamlight lists IP67 dust and water protection, waterproofing to 1 meter for 30 minutes, and 2-meter impact-resistance testing. These figures are the manufacturer’s claims for this model and are not a controlled durability comparison with the other lights.

The optional magnetic clip can be valuable on a belt, pipe, rack, or panel where a simple tail magnet would point the wrong way. Confirm that the clip is included with the SKU you are purchasing; an otherwise identical listing may omit it.
Hazardous-location ratings are application requirements
Streamlight publishes hazardous-location classifications for the Dualie Rechargeable. “Intrinsically safe” is not a universal permission slip: the class, division or zone, gas or dust group, temperature code, and regional approval must match the workplace and the exact model. Ask your safety professional or equipment authority to verify the marking before entering a classified area. A generic retailer description is not a substitute for the manufacturer’s certification information.
Streamlight Dualie 3AA Magnet: replaceable cells and long low-mode runtime
The Streamlight Dualie 3AA Magnet is a separate AA-powered model, not proof that every Dualie has the same battery or mounting arrangement. A 2024 Streamlight data sheet lists a magnetic clip and an integrated hang hook.
Modes and battery life
It produces 140 lumens from the spot beam for 18 hours or 140 lumens from the flood beam for 18 hours. Both beams together produce 245 lumens for 9 hours. The light accepts three AA alkaline batteries and also accepts three AA lithium batteries. Replaceable cells are useful where charging access is limited or a storeroom already stocks approved AAs, but they add consumable-battery planning and weight.

The data sheet lists IPX7 water protection. The “X” means the published rating does not specify a dust-test level; do not treat it as an IP67 dust rating. The magnetic clip and hang hook let you position the light on a ferrous surface or suspend it from a suitable point. As with every magnet, inspect the contact and stability before leaving it unattended.

How to choose the right magnetic flashlight
1. Start with the attachment point
- Pick a base magnet for tail-first attachment to steel and compact pocket carry.
- Pick built-in body magnets when you need a work-light orientation across a panel or machine.
- Pick a magnetic clip when clipping, hanging, or rotating the light is more useful than a fixed tail position.
2. Match the beam to the task
- Use a focused spot for locating a distant label, fastener, or leak.
- Use flood output for wiring, panels, and close-up work where shadows are the problem.
- Use combined spot/flood only when you need both; its runtime is shorter than either beam alone on the Dualie models.
3. Calculate runtime from the mode you will actually use
Write down the expected hours at the chosen output, not the headline maximum. For example, the 2011R’s 100-lumen mode lasts 16 hours, while its 500-lumen mode lasts 3.5 hours. The TXM55R’s 73-hour Moon Glow figure is suitable for very low-level illumination, not a bright inspection. The rechargeable Dualie’s 7-hour combined mode is different from its 20-hour flood mode.
4. Decide between rechargeable and replaceable power
USB-C rechargeable lights reduce disposable-cell handling and are convenient when a charged power source is available. The Milwaukee battery is built in, while the COAST includes a removable rechargeable pack and also supports two CR123 cells. The rechargeable Dualie uses lithium-ion power. The Dualie 3AA uses three alkaline or three lithium AAs. In a remote kit, carry the correct spare cells or a second charged light rather than assuming a charging cable solves every failure.
5. Treat ratings as model-specific
Compare IP and impact claims only after confirming the exact model. The listed products range from IP54 to IP67 and IPX7, with different impact statements. A higher-looking number does not automatically make a light suitable for chemicals, steam, explosive dust, or a drop from a particular height.

Safe setup on a worksite
- Identify the surface. Confirm that it is ferrous steel and free of loose rust, oil, chips, or heavy debris.
- Inspect the magnet or clip. Check for cracked plastic, trapped metal particles, or a clip that no longer closes securely.
- Choose the contact orientation. Put the magnet flat against the surface; avoid relying on an edge or a single small point.
- Set the lowest useful output. Begin in flood or low mode, then increase brightness only when glare and battery use justify it.
- Test before letting go. Gently tug the light and watch for sliding, rotation, or cable strain. Vibration from motors, vehicles, and tools can defeat a mount that appears stable at rest.
- Keep the beam clear. Do not place the light where a cover, guard, or your own hand blocks the lens or creates dangerous glare.
- Recheck after moving equipment. A changed angle, vibration pattern, or warm surface can alter holding performance.
Never use the magnet to attach a light to energized conductors, moving machinery, lifting equipment, or a location where a falling light could injure someone unless your site procedure explicitly allows it. In a classified area, use only the exact certified model and approved accessories.
Charging, storage, and troubleshooting
The light will not stay attached
- Clean oil, dust, paint flakes, and rust from the contact patch.
- Move to a thicker, flatter steel section; thin sheet metal and curved surfaces reduce holding force.
- Reduce side-loading by repositioning the light so its weight hangs toward the surface.
- Use the clip or hang hook if the task includes vibration or an overhead position.
The light is dimmer than expected
- Check the selected mode; a 10-lumen or Moon Glow setting can look like a fault when it is operating normally.
- Recharge the internal battery or replace the approved cells.
- Clean the lens and verify that the beam is not aimed into a reflective surface.
- Allow the light to cool and consult the model instructions if thermal regulation reduces output.
Charging does not start
- Use a known-good USB-C cable and power source.
- Inspect and dry the charging port before connecting power.
- For the COAST, verify that the rechargeable pack is seated correctly; if using CR123 cells, confirm that the model supports them and that they are installed as directed.
- Do not open a sealed or integrated battery compartment unless the manufacturer’s service instructions permit it.
Which one should you choose?
| Your priority | Most suitable design | Why | Check before purchase |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small pocket light that can attach tail-first | Milwaukee 2011R | Magnetic base, reversible clip, three useful output levels, USB-C charging | Whether the tail position points the beam at your task |
| Headlamp plus handheld and magnetic work light | COAST TXM55R | Three-in-one format, focusing beam, built-in magnets, rechargeable or CR123 power | That IP54 protection and the available battery options fit the environment |
| Classified workplace needing spot and flood | Streamlight Dualie Rechargeable | Published hazardous-location classifications, separate spot/flood outputs, optional magnetic clip | Exact certification, region, SKU, and whether the clip is included |
| Long shifts with replaceable batteries | Streamlight Dualie 3AA Magnet | Three AA cells, 18-hour single-beam runtimes, magnetic clip and hang hook | Three-cell availability and the IPX7-only water specification |
There is no universal winner because “best” depends on where the light must attach, which beam you need, how long it must run, and whether a hazardous-location approval is mandatory. Select the mounting construction first, then verify mode-specific runtime, battery logistics, and the exact protection or certification claim for your job.
