Those statements establish the advertised target, not an independent benchmark. They do not establish that every scene holds a fixed 60 frames per second, that either console renders at a particular resolution, or that one platform is consistently smoother. No named laboratory test or platform-by-platform frame-time measurement is published in the official material reviewed for this release.

They also do not establish a user-facing graphics switch. Do not assume that a Performance/Quality selector, 120 FPS mode, ray-tracing toggle, resolution choice, or field-of-view slider exists. If your copy shows an option that is not described here, treat the live menu on your system as authoritative and record its exact label before changing it.
Install the correct current-generation edition
Before changing a television or console setting, confirm that you are running the October 8, 2026 current-generation edition rather than the older PS4 or Xbox One application. 2K Support says eligible owners can obtain the new edition at no additional cost under platform-specific conditions.
Who is eligible
The support announcement identifies existing owners of Mafia III: Definitive Edition, Mafia: Trilogy, or Mafia: The Omertà Collection as eligible, subject to the conditions in that announcement. Eligibility is attached to the relevant account and platform purchase; it is not a universal free copy for every player.

- Sign in to the PlayStation account that owns an eligible digital edition.
- Open your game library or the store page for Mafia III: Definitive Edition.
- Select the PS5 edition when the store presents more than one version, then download it.
- After installation, highlight the game on the PS5 home screen and use the information/options controls to verify that the installed application is the PS5 build, not only the PS4 version.
PS5 disc owners
2K’s instructions distinguish disc owners from digital owners. A qualifying PS4 disc can be used only on a PS5 with a disc drive, and the PS4 disc must remain inserted whenever you launch and play the PS5 edition. A PS5 Digital Edition cannot validate a PS4 disc.

Xbox Series X|S owners
- Sign in to the Microsoft account that owns an eligible digital copy.
- Open My games & apps and check your library, or search the Microsoft Store for Mafia III: Definitive Edition for Xbox Series X|S.
- Choose the Series X|S version and install it. The Xbox listing identifies the edition as optimized for Series X|S and advertises “60 fps+.”
- Launch the installed title and confirm that the game is not simply the backward-compatible Xbox One application.
The official guidance specifically describes digital Xbox ownership for this no-cost upgrade path. If your purchase does not appear, check the account that made the purchase and the edition attached to it before buying anything.
PS5 setup for the smoothest available output
There is no documented in-game PS5 performance preset to select. Use this sequence to make sure the console and display are not adding an avoidable problem.
- Install the PS5 build. Follow the edition checks above. A PS4 application cannot deliver the current-generation update’s advertised feature set.
- Install all available game and system updates. The 60 FPS statement applies to the current-generation release announced for October 8, 2026; an incomplete installation can leave you testing an older build.
- Inspect PS5 video output. On the PS5, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. Review the resolution and refresh-rate information reported for the connected display. Use the console’s automatic or display-recommended values unless you have a specific compatibility reason to change them. This menu tells you what the console and television negotiate; it does not prove that Mafia III renders at a particular resolution.
- Check the television or monitor input. Use the display’s low-latency or game setting if your model provides one, and make sure the console is connected to the input that supports the display mode you intend to use. These are display-side choices, not Mafia III graphics presets.

Xbox Series X|S setup for smooth performance
- Install the optimized edition. In My games & apps, select the Series X|S edition shown in your library or install it from the Microsoft Store listing. The listing’s “60 fps+” label belongs to that edition.
- Check the console’s video output. Open Settings > General > TV & display options and review the resolution and refresh-rate values detected for your television. Leave them at the display’s supported or recommended values unless you are troubleshooting a known compatibility issue.
- Confirm the correct HDMI input and display mode. If your television has a low-latency or game preset, enable it on the input used by the Xbox. This can reduce display processing delay, but it does not change the game’s internal rendering settings.
- Inspect the in-game Options menu. The reviewed official sources do not document a Series X|S Performance/Quality selector, target resolution, or frame-rate setting. If your live build exposes a new control, follow the wording shown in that menu rather than assuming it matches a PC option.
- Re-test after updates finish. A title may show as installed while an update is still downloading. Wait for the queue to complete, relaunch the game, and then compare motion in the same busy scene you used previously.
Because “60 fps+” is a store capability label, it should not be read as a guarantee that every location, effect, or moment is locked above 60 FPS. The listing does not publish frame-time data.

What the in-game settings menu actually documents
The available official manual is for the Xbox One-era version. It confirms the broad structure of the Options menu—Control, Gameplay, Audio, and Display—but it does not enumerate current-generation graphics controls. Use it as a description of menu categories, not as proof that the PS5 or Series X|S editions expose the same individual entries.
Control
Adjust control preferences only for comfort and accessibility. Stick sensitivity, button behavior, and similar choices affect how the game feels to play; they do not raise the console’s frame rate.
Gameplay
The manual documents a gameplay choice between lethal and non-lethal takedowns. That selection changes the way Lincoln handles certain encounters, not the advertised 60 FPS target. Choose the approach you prefer rather than treating it as a performance setting.
Audio
Audio sliders and output choices can correct volume or balance issues, but they are unrelated to rendering performance. If sound drops out while motion remains smooth, troubleshoot the display and audio path separately instead of changing graphics assumptions.

This is the only category that could plausibly contain visual controls, yet the reviewed current-generation announcements do not specify its contents. Open it on your own installation and note the exact options. Do not infer a resolution target, HDR behavior, refresh-rate mode, or quality preset from the category name alone.

Both platforms therefore have the same practical recommendation: use the current-generation application, keep the software updated, and verify the console’s display output. The current-generation upgrade changes more than the frame-rate target for returning players: 2K Support says PS4 and Xbox One save files and achievements cannot be transferred to the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions. Your old progress remains associated with the previous-generation application, but it will not populate the new version.

That means a smooth-performance upgrade can require starting the campaign again and re-earning achievements. Back up or retain the previous-generation installation if you still want access to that progress. Do not delete the old application or its local data until you have confirmed which version you intend to play.
Troubleshooting when motion does not look smooth
The game still appears to be the old version
- Open the library or store page and select the PS5 or Series X|S edition explicitly.
- Check the installed application’s platform label before launching.
- On PS5 disc systems, keep the qualifying PS4 disc inserted; a disc-free console cannot validate it.
- On Xbox, verify that the Series X|S-optimized listing, not only the Xbox One entry, is installed.
The display reports an unexpected mode
- Return to the console’s video-output screen and read the detected resolution and refresh rate.
- Try the display’s recommended or automatic setting, then restart the game.
- Check the television’s input and low-latency/game setting.
- Do not conclude that the game has a hidden resolution option from the television’s status banner; that banner reports the signal it receives.
You cannot find a Performance mode
That may be normal. The official announcements and listings reviewed here do not document a selectable current-generation performance/quality preset. Check the live Display menu once after each update, but do not follow instructions that require a menu item your build does not show.
Your old progress is missing
This is an announced limitation, not evidence of a failed frame-rate upgrade. PS4 and Xbox One saves and achievements do not transfer to the new versions. Reinstalling the current-generation edition will not import them.

The published 60 FPS figure is an advertised target, and the Xbox “60 fps+” label is a capability claim. Neither source provides a constant-rate guarantee or scene-by-scene measurement. Record the location, confirm that updates are complete, and verify the display path before attributing the behavior to a setting. There is no documented console slider that can be used to trade image quality for frame rate.
