The right Mac privacy app depends on what you mean by “look away.” Gaze Guard and ShyGlass describe automatic blur triggered by your head position or attention; EyesOff, Peeking Pete and PeekGuard focus on detecting another person; Peeku and AttentiLock are walk-away locking tools. Those outcomes are not interchangeable, and no independent benchmark currently establishes one universal winner.
What these Mac privacy apps actually protect
“Hide my screen when I look away” can describe three different events:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
| Protection type | Trigger | Response | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Look-away blur | Head direction or an approximation of gaze | Blurred app, window or display overlay | False triggers, delay, multiple-display behavior, and whether it uses the camera or AirPods |
| Shoulder-surf detection | Another face appears or appears to look toward the display | Alert, overlay, app switch, screenshot or optional lock | Enrollment, sensitivity, snapshots and local-data handling |
| Walk-away locking | You leave the camera’s field of view or a presence signal disappears | Screen saver or login-window lock | Delay, false locks and the Mac password-after-screen-saver setting |
| Passive privacy filter | A viewer moves outside the display’s narrow viewing angle | Side-angle content becomes difficult to read | Display size, aspect ratio, fit, brightness and viewing-angle trade-offs |
A blur is not a lock: someone may still see a blurred outline, and the underlying account remains unlocked. An alert tells you that a risk was detected but does not conceal anything by itself. A screen saver becomes a login lock only when macOS is configured to require a password immediately.
Quick comparison of the current options
| App | Primary signal | Response described by the developer or listing | Important requirements |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gaze Guard | Camera-based head/attention and nearby-person detection | Blur for all or selected apps; adjustable delay; “anyone nearby” or “direct gaze only” modes | Camera permission; three-day free unlock followed by a one-time lifetime purchase, with current regional price to be confirmed |
| ShyGlass | Motion sensors in compatible AirPods | Screen-covering blur after head movement exceeds a configurable comfort zone | macOS 14 or later; AirPods (3rd generation or later), AirPods Pro or AirPods Max; AirPods 1 and 2 are unsupported; Screen Recording permission |
| EyesOff | Webcam face detection and a classification of whether a face looks at the screen | Alert, overlay, application switch or lock; optional enrollment and walk-away locking | macOS 13.3 or later; 14-day trial, then £19.99/year at the time listed; camera access |
| Peeking Pete | Extra-face, enrolled-face or first-face-on-launch detection | Alerts and a high-risk mode that locks after repeated intrusions | Uses the existing webcam; current compatibility and price should be checked in the listing |
| PeekGuard | Real-time camera detection with trusted-user enrollment | Alerts, optional screenshots and Sentry Mode auto-lock when you are away | macOS 12 or later on an Apple M1 or later Mac; local processing is claimed by the listing |
| BlurAway | Camera-based presence detection | Blurs selected apps when the viewer is not alone | Camera permission for presence detection and Accessibility permission to protect selected apps; offline use is described |
| Peeku | Presence and walk-away detection | Starts the macOS screen saver when you step away | macOS screen-saver password must be set to require a password immediately |
| AttentiLock | Face presence, absence, familiarity and head pose | Soft overlay followed by a later login-window lock | Public GitHub project; README warns that head pose approximates rather than measures true eye gaze |
These descriptions come from vendor pages, App Store listings or the AttentiLock README. They establish advertised behavior, not measured accuracy, latency, battery impact or security assurance.

Look-away blur apps
Gaze Guard: camera-based blur with selectable coverage
The Gaze Guard App Store listing says it uses the Mac camera and Apple’s on-device Vision framework to blur when you look away or when another person looks in. You can select all apps or only specified apps, set a blur delay, and choose between an “anyone nearby” mode and a “direct gaze only” mode.
The listing says camera video is neither recorded nor uploaded. That is a developer statement rather than an independent privacy audit, so read the current App Store privacy label and permission prompt. The listing describes everything being unlocked for three days and then a one-time lifetime purchase; confirm the current price and availability for your country before paying.
This is the closest match if your requirement is “cover the content when my attention turns away,” but camera-based gaze or head-direction estimates can produce false triggers. Test the delay, lighting, camera angle and external-monitor behavior at your desk.
ShyGlass: AirPods motion instead of a camera
ShyGlass says it reads motion sensors in compatible AirPods. When head movement passes a configurable comfort zone, it places a screen-covering blur over the display. It requires macOS 14 or later and one of these headphones: AirPods (3rd generation or later), AirPods Pro or AirPods Max. AirPods 1 and AirPods 2 are not supported.
The site lists a $3.99 one-time price for use on up to five Macs. Prices and terms can change, so verify them on the current site. ShyGlass says Screen Recording permission creates a current display snapshot held in memory and not uploaded. Explain this permission to yourself before granting it: the label allows the app to capture the screen, even though the developer says the snapshot is temporary.
Because the trigger is head motion, not a camera assessment of another person’s eyes, ShyGlass is a narrower fit. It can suit someone who already owns supported AirPods and mainly wants a quick cover when turning away, but it does not provide the face-enrollment and shoulder-surf responses described by camera-based tools.
Shoulder-surf detection and response
EyesOff: configurable responses to another face
EyesOff describes webcam face detection plus a classification of whether a detected face is looking at the screen. You choose the response: an alert, an overlay, an application switch or a lock. Optional enrollment lets the app recognize you, and its walk-away feature can lock when another face appears after you leave.

The site lists macOS 13.3 or later, a 14-day trial and £19.99 per year at the time accessed. It says live frames and gaze detections are processed on-device, while optional snapshots are stored locally. It also mentions network access for licence validation and optional update or feedback functions. Check those settings, the current privacy policy and the exact lock behavior before relying on it for confidential work.
An EyesOff customer testimonial describes receiving a warning while seated in a cubicle with the user’s back toward a walkway. That is an individual experience, not an accuracy study. The site also displays figures attributed to older third-party reports; those figures should not be treated as independently verified here.
Peeking Pete: intrusion modes and repeated-intrusion locking
The Peeking Pete listing describes three detection choices: an extra face, an enrolled face or the first face seen when the app launches. It offers alerts and a high-risk mode that locks after repeated intrusions.
This makes Peeking Pete a shoulder-surfing alert and response tool rather than a guaranteed “blur every time I glance away” utility. Confirm the current App Store compatibility, permissions, price and whether its lock response reaches the macOS login window or only covers the display.

PeekGuard lists real-time detection, trusted-user enrollment, alerts that can include screenshots and a Sentry Mode that auto-locks when you are away. The listing says processing is local and supports macOS 12 or later on an Apple M1 or later Mac.
Screenshot alerts deserve special scrutiny. A screenshot is a copy of whatever was visible at that moment, so read the current privacy policy, storage location and retention controls before enabling the feature. “Local processing” is a product claim, not proof that every optional diagnostic or licence function is offline.
Presence blur and walk-away locking
BlurAway: selected-app blur when another viewer is present
BlurAway’s FAQ says it blurs selected apps when the viewer is not alone, can operate offline and needs Camera permission for presence detection. Accessibility permission is required to protect selected apps. Accessibility access can let software interact with windows or controls, so grant it only after checking the app’s explanation and macOS’s permission panel.

Peeku: screen saver first, password lock second
The Peeku App Store version history describes a Mac App Store edition that starts the macOS screen saver when you step away. The developer says analysis runs on the Mac with Apple Vision and that camera frames and cloud presence history are not uploaded.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Peeku does not itself guarantee an immediate login lock. In macOS, open System Settings → Lock Screen and set Require password after screen saver begins to Immediately. Without that setting, the screen saver can appear while the session remains accessible.
AttentiLock: an open project with an explicit limitation
The AttentiLock README documents an overlay when your face is away, absent or unfamiliar, followed by a later login-window lock. It explicitly says head pose is an approximation and not true eye-gaze measurement. The overlay phase is therefore a soft lock; the hard-lock fallback is the stage that should protect the account.
AttentiLock is a public project README, not evidence of a tested, broadly supported commercial application. Review its current installation instructions, code, macOS compatibility and maintenance activity before using it on a work Mac.
Choose by the risk you are trying to reduce
You turn toward a second monitor or stand up briefly
Start with a look-away blur approach. Gaze Guard offers camera-based attention modes and selectable app coverage; ShyGlass offers a camera-free motion trigger if you have supported AirPods. Compare the trigger you actually need: a head-turn sensor will not identify an approaching stranger, while a camera model may react to lighting or another face.
You work in an open office, classroom or café
Use shoulder-surf detection if another person’s face is the main threat. EyesOff, Peeking Pete and PeekGuard describe alerts or responses based on another face, with enrollment options in some cases. Decide whether you want a warning, an overlay, an app switch or a lock before choosing an app.
You leave the Mac unattended
Use a walk-away locker such as Peeku, or a tool whose Sentry or high-risk mode explicitly locks. Configure macOS to require the password immediately after the screen saver begins. A walk-away tool does not necessarily react while you are still seated and looking at a different window.

You cannot install monitoring software
A physical privacy filter is passive and does not need camera, Accessibility or Screen Recording permission. It limits readability from side angles but does not detect your attention or lock the Mac. Treat it as a second layer, not a software replacement.
Permissions: what each one enables
- Camera: enables face, presence or head-position analysis. Camera access alone does not establish where frames are stored; check the developer’s privacy policy and macOS’s indicator.
- Screen Recording: can enable a display snapshot or screen capture. ShyGlass says its snapshot is held in memory and not uploaded, but the permission still grants capture capability.
- Accessibility: lets an app protect selected windows or interact with controls. BlurAway says it needs this permission for selected-app protection.
- Network access: may support licence validation, updates or feedback. EyesOff identifies those optional or operational network uses even while saying live frames are processed on-device.
- Snapshots: can preserve sensitive content. PeekGuard advertises screenshot alerts, and EyesOff describes optional local snapshots; inspect retention and deletion controls before enabling either.
App Store privacy labels and developer statements are useful disclosures, not independent audits. Revisit them after updates and disable optional records, analytics or feedback features you do not need.

- Check compatibility first. Confirm the macOS version, Apple-silicon requirement, camera type and whether external displays are supported in the current listing.
- Install only from the documented source. Use the App Store listing or the developer’s official site linked above, then read the first-run permission explanations.
- Grant the minimum permissions. Start with Camera. Add Accessibility or Screen Recording only when the feature you selected requires it.
- Choose the response. For confidential work, an overlay or app switch may be less disruptive than a full lock; for an unattended desk, a login-window lock is stronger.
- Set a delay and sensitivity. Begin with a delay long enough to avoid blurring during normal reading, then shorten it only after checking false triggers.
- Test in your real position. Try normal typing, turning to another monitor, leaning back, wearing glasses and having a colleague pass behind you. Observe what is hidden and whether the response is merely visual.
- Recheck after sleep and display changes. Verify behavior after waking the Mac, connecting an external monitor and switching spaces or full-screen apps.
Set up AirPods-based protection
- Confirm that you have AirPods (3rd generation or later), AirPods Pro or AirPods Max and macOS 14 or later; AirPods 1 and 2 do not meet ShyGlass’s stated requirements.
- Pair the AirPods and install ShyGlass from its current official page.
- Review the Screen Recording prompt. The site says this is used for a display snapshot kept in memory rather than uploaded.
- Set the comfort-zone threshold while seated normally, then turn your head toward a second screen and walk through the response.
- Check behavior when the AirPods are disconnected, the battery is low or another audio device is selected. Do not assume the blur remains active without the required sensor connection.
Configure a genuine walk-away lock
- Open System Settings → Lock Screen.
- Set Require password after screen saver begins to Immediately.
- In the walk-away app, choose a delay that allows brief posture changes without locking repeatedly.
- Walk out of the camera’s field of view and confirm that the screen saver starts.
- Move the mouse or press a key and verify that macOS presents the login or password prompt, not merely the desktop.
If the last step does not show a password prompt, the Mac is not configured for an actual lock even if the app reports that it triggered the screen saver.
Common failure modes and fixes
It blurs while you are still working
Increase the delay, reduce sensitivity or change the detection mode. Recheck camera placement and lighting. If you use an AirPods-based trigger, adjust the comfort zone because the signal is head movement rather than eye direction.
It misses a person walking behind you
Check whether the app is configured for another-face detection, direct gaze or enrolled users. A look-away mode may intentionally ignore strangers, while an enrollment mode may reject an unfamiliar face. Test with the camera’s actual field of view rather than assuming a person is visible.
The app says it locked, but the desktop is still usable
Confirm the macOS password-after-screen-saver setting is Immediately. Also distinguish a blur or overlay from a login-window lock; only the latter protects the account from someone continuing to interact with the Mac.
External monitors behave differently
Check whether the app protects all displays, only the built-in panel or only selected windows. This is an important purchase check because the advertised blur may not cover every monitor configuration.

A permission prompt feels excessive
Map the permission to the feature: Camera for presence, Accessibility for selected-app control and Screen Recording for a captured display snapshot. Decline optional permissions and remove access later in macOS privacy settings if the feature is not worth the exposure.
Physical privacy filters and layered protection
The useful search phrase for a passive accessory is MacBook privacy screen filter. A filter narrows the readable viewing angle, so it can reduce side glances while an app handles attention or presence. It cannot know when you look away, blur a window on command or lock the account. Verify the exact Mac display size, aspect ratio, notch or camera cutout, mounting method, brightness loss and viewing-angle specification before buying.
Compatible AirPods are a different hardware path: they are task-enabling hardware for ShyGlass, not a requirement for the camera-based alternatives. Confirm the exact model and current availability if you are considering AirPods solely for this purpose.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDo not confuse browser privacy with whole-screen privacy
Apple’s Personal Safety User Guide explains protections for Safari Private Browsing, including automatic authentication for inactive private tabs on macOS 14 or later. That feature protects private browser tabs; it does not blur arbitrary apps, cover the entire display or detect a shoulder surfer. Use it alongside, not instead of, a system-wide privacy tool when your risk includes documents, messaging apps or desktop windows.
How to evaluate an app before trusting it
No independent comparison in the available evidence measures detection accuracy, latency, false-positive rate, battery impact or security across these apps. You can still make a disciplined decision:
- Write down the event you need to detect: your head turning, another face appearing, another face looking at the screen or your departure from the desk.
- Write down the required outcome: blur, warning, app switch, screen saver or login lock.
- Confirm the hardware and macOS requirements, including external-display support and whether a camera or supported AirPods must remain connected.
- Read the current privacy policy, App Store label and permission prompts. Look specifically for snapshots, analytics, licence checks, update services and retention.
- Run a repeatable desk test: five normal head turns, five brief glances toward another display, five walk-aways and five approaches by another person. Record misses, unwanted triggers and the time to response.
- Repeat after sleep, reboot, monitor connection and app updates. A privacy control is useful only when it remains active in the situations you actually face.
A practical choice
Choose Gaze Guard when a camera-based look-away blur and selectable app coverage match your workflow. Choose ShyGlass when you want a motion-sensor trigger and already have supported AirPods. Choose EyesOff, Peeking Pete or PeekGuard when another person’s face is the primary concern and you want alerts or stronger responses. Choose Peeku or AttentiLock when the key event is leaving the Mac, and verify that the final state is a password-protected login window. Add a physical privacy filter when side-angle viewing is a concern that software cannot reliably address.
