Windows 11 is the best-documented Mac alternative here for people who want explicit controls over AI features—but the available documentation does not establish that one switch removes every AI capability. Microsoft documents ways to remove or prevent installation of the Microsoft Copilot app in certain management contexts, while Copilot in Microsoft 365 apps has separate controls. Apple, meanwhile, documents several ways to turn off, restrict, or configure Apple Intelligence features on a Mac. The practical choice is therefore about which named features you can control, not whether a computer is entirely AI-free.
What counts as an AI control?
“Disable AI” can mean different things: turning off a platform feature, restricting access to selected capabilities, uninstalling an app, or changing an app-specific setting. Those actions have different scopes. Removing the Copilot app, for example, is not the same claim as disabling every AI-related Windows component.

Controls can also depend on the operating-system or app version, region, language, device, and whether an administrator manages the computer. The official guidance cited below describes particular controls and contexts; it does not support a blanket promise that either Windows or macOS can be made completely free of AI functionality.
Windows 11: the strongest documented Mac alternative
Microsoft’s Windows Copilot guidance describes options to remove or prevent installation of the Microsoft Copilot app in specified Windows 11 management contexts. These are useful controls if your concern is that app, but the documented conditions should not be generalized to every Windows device or edition. Nor does removing that app establish that other AI features or components are gone. See Microsoft’s Windows Copilot management guidance for the applicable context and conditions.

Copilot in Microsoft 365 is a separate decision
Copilot settings within Microsoft 365 apps are app-specific. Microsoft provides separate guidance for turning off Copilot in those apps; changing that setting should not be described as removing the Windows Copilot app or disabling AI across Windows. Check the instructions for the Microsoft 365 apps you use at Microsoft’s Microsoft 365 Copilot support page.
Why app removal is not proof of complete removal
Microsoft documents Windows AI components and their servicing separately from core Windows feature updates. That distinction is another reason to assess individual controls rather than assume that a Copilot app setting governs every AI-related capability. Microsoft’s AI components servicing page describes that separate component context.

Mac: Apple documents more granular Apple Intelligence controls
If you are comparing alternatives because you want to reduce AI functionality, macOS itself has documented controls worth weighing before switching. Apple’s Mac guide covers turning off Apple Intelligence and separate controls for selected capabilities, including summaries and Siri-related features. The available settings are not all one universal off switch; consult Apple’s guide to turning off or restricting Apple Intelligence for the relevant Mac version.
Screen Time can restrict access to selected features
Apple also documents Screen Time restrictions for Writing Tools, image creation, and intelligence extensions. A restriction limits access to the listed capabilities; it is not evidence that every AI-related system component has been removed. The cited instructions are for the guide’s specified version and locale: Apple’s Screen Time restrictions guide.

The ChatGPT extension has its own settings
Apple treats its ChatGPT extension as separately configurable, including controls for turning it off and for request confirmation. That gives users a distinct choice about this extension rather than a system-wide AI setting. See Apple’s ChatGPT extension guide.
Compare the documented controls by scope
| Platform or app | Documented action | Scope and qualification | Official guidance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows 11 Copilot app | Remove the app or prevent installation | Microsoft documents these options for specified management contexts. This does not establish removal of every AI feature or component on Windows. | Microsoft Windows Copilot guidance |
| Microsoft 365 apps | Turn off Copilot through app-specific controls | Applies to Copilot settings in Microsoft 365 apps, not automatically to the separate Windows Copilot app or all Windows AI features. | Microsoft 365 support guidance |
| Mac Apple Intelligence | Turn off Apple Intelligence or adjust selected feature controls | Apple documents separate controls, including for summaries and Siri-related capabilities; settings are version- and availability-dependent. | Apple Mac guide |
| Mac features via Screen Time | Restrict access to Writing Tools, image creation, and intelligence extensions | Access restriction for listed capabilities, not proof of complete system removal; use the guide matching the device and version. | Apple Screen Time guide |
| Mac ChatGPT extension | Turn off or configure request confirmation | A separately configurable extension; this does not describe every Apple Intelligence control. | Apple ChatGPT guide |
How to choose without assuming “AI-free” means one thing
- List the features you want to avoid. Decide whether your concern is the Copilot app, AI inside Microsoft 365, Apple Intelligence features, an external extension, or a broader set of capabilities.
- Match each concern to its own control. On Windows, distinguish management options for the Copilot app from Microsoft 365 app settings. On Mac, distinguish Apple Intelligence controls, Screen Time restrictions, and ChatGPT extension settings.
- Check applicability before buying or changing a device. Confirm the relevant OS and app version, region, language, device support, and whether the computer is under administrator management. The official guides describe controls within those contexts, not a universal result for every installation.
- Verify the result at the same scope. If you remove an app, verify that app is absent; do not infer that unrelated built-in features or components are disabled. If you change an app setting, verify it in that app rather than treating it as a platform-wide switch.
What about Linux laptops?
Linux could be a path for some users seeking a different software environment, but the sources available for this comparison do not substantiate a particular distribution or laptop as a researched winner for AI removal controls. It would be misleading to name one as the best option here or to assume that a Linux-compatible device has no AI-related software. Choose a specific distribution and hardware only after checking their current defaults, bundled applications, and documented controls.

Is there a best laptop model for this purpose?
No specific Windows laptop model is established by the documented controls. Windows 11 is a category-level alternative to a Mac, not a recommendation of a particular machine, configuration, or performance level. A laptop’s hardware does not by itself show which Windows or app controls will apply; check the edition, configuration, and management context for the device you are considering.
