Best overall choice: buy a 2 TB PCIe Gen4x4 M.2 NVMe SSD with a correctly sized heatsink, a rated sequential-read speed of at least 5,500 MB/s, and dimensions that stay within Sony’s limits after the cooling structure is installed. Tom’s Hardware currently names the WD Black SN850X 2 TB its best PS5 SSD pick, with the Samsung 990 Pro 2 TB as an alternate fast option; it also lists an 8 TB SN850X for maximum capacity. Those are editorial recommendations, not a guarantee that every game will perform identically to the PS5’s internal SSD.
PS5 expansion is not a matter of buying any drive labeled “M.2.” The console accepts a specific PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe design, requires effective heat dissipation, and supports 250 GB through 8 TB. The drive and its heatsink must fit together in the expansion bay. Use the checklist and installation procedure below before ordering.

PS5 M.2 compatibility requirements
Sony’s full requirements and installation illustrations are on its PlayStation Support page for adding an M.2 SSD. Treat every item below as a requirement for the complete assembly, not just the bare circuit board.
#1 Best Overall
- Officially licensed M.2 SSD for PlayStation 5 consoles[4] so you can easily install and play with no concern of compatibility. [4]For PlayStation 5 system software compatibility, please visit the official WD_BLACK site.
- With capacities ranging from 1TB to 4TB[1], your PS5 console has the additional space to store up to 200 games[3] (8TB model) [1]1GB = 1 billion bytes and 1TB = one trillion bytes. Actual user capacity may be less depending on operating environment. [3] Number of games based on a 36GB average per game. The number of games will vary based on file size, formatting, other programs, and factors.
- Experience uninterrupted gameplay with a brand-new, optimized heatsink designed especially for the PS5 console for an easy, worry-free installation into the M.2 slot.
- Play directly from the drive and eliminate the need to transfer or delete games from your console with tested and approved storage for your PS5 console[4].
- Push the envelope of PCIe Gen 4 technology with read speeds up to 7,300MB/s[2], giving you seamless gameplay and incredibly short load times. [2]1 MB/s = 1 million bytes per second. Based on internal testing; performance may vary depending upon host device, usage conditions, drive capacity, and other factors.
Use PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe, Key M
The expansion slot is for an M.2 NVMe SSD using a PCIe Gen4x4 interface and M key. M.2 SATA drives are unsupported even though they use the same broad M.2 shape. A listing should explicitly identify PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe; “M.2” by itself is not enough.
Stay within Sony’s size envelope
With its cooling structure installed, the assembly may be up to 25 mm wide and up to 11.25 mm thick. Supported lengths are 30, 42, 60, 80 and 110 mm, corresponding to the common 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280 and 22110 formats. The SSD can be single- or double-sided, but the heatsink, labels, thermal pads and any protruding parts all count toward the limits.
| Measurement | Sony’s maximum or supported value | How to apply it |
|---|---|---|
| Capacity | 250 GB to 8 TB | Choose a listed capacity within this range; the console will format the new drive. |
| Interface | PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe, M key | Reject M.2 SATA and drives without an explicit NVMe/PCIe Gen4x4 specification. |
| Sequential read | 5,500 MB/s or faster recommended | Use the vendor’s stated sequential-read maximum as a screening figure, not a promise of game performance. |
| Width including cooler | 25 mm maximum | Measure the widest part of the SSD-plus-heatsink assembly. |
| Length | 30, 42, 60, 80 or 110 mm | Match the drive length to one of the console’s mounting positions. |
| Thickness including cooler | 11.25 mm maximum | Include both sides of a double-sided drive and every heatsink or thermal pad. |
5,500 MB/s is a recommendation, not a guarantee
Sony recommends a sequential read speed of 5,500 MB/s or faster, but explicitly warns that a compliant third-party drive may not deliver the same performance as the internal Ultra-High Speed SSD in every game. The warning remains applicable when an M.2 device exceeds 5,500 MB/s. Vendor speed ratings are normally maximums measured under specified test conditions, not a console-wide frame-rate or loading-time result.

Cooling is mandatory
Use an SSD with a built-in heatsink or install a separate cooling structure designed for PS5 dimensions. Do not place a second heatsink over one already attached to the drive; the extra layers can exceed the thickness limit and prevent proper contact or installation. For a bare drive, compare the SSD and the exact heatsink model as one assembly. A heatsink that fits an original PS5 may not fit a PS5 Slim, so verify the console model and the manufacturer’s dimensions before ordering.
How much capacity should you buy?
Capacity is the decision that most affects how often you will manage games. Sony permits 250 GB to 8 TB, but a larger drive costs more and does not make a non-compliant interface or oversized heatsink acceptable.
2 TB: the practical starting point
Tom’s Hardware specifically suggests considering 2 TB or 4 TB models for PS5 buyers, and its 2 TB WD Black SN850X and Samsung 990 Pro recommendations reflect that range. A 2 TB expansion is a sensible choice when you want a substantially larger installed library without paying for the maximum capacity. Compare the actual usable space shown by the console after formatting rather than relying on the decimal capacity printed on the box.
Recommended Free Tools
4 TB: fewer uninstall decisions
Choose 4 TB when your library includes many large current-generation games, you share the console, or you frequently switch between single-player campaigns and multiplayer titles. No current live-price comparison is provided, so compare the current cost per terabyte for the exact heatsink-equipped SKU instead of assuming that a larger drive is automatically better value.

- Up to 40% less power consumption than DRAM cache-enabled PCIe Gen 4 SSDs

8 TB: maximum supported capacity
An 8 TB drive is the upper limit Sony lists and is aimed at readers who want to keep an unusually large library installed. Tom’s Hardware lists an 8 TB WD Black SN850X high-capacity pick. Verify that the specific 8 TB model is PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe, that its cooler remains under 11.25 mm, and that its price makes sense for your usage; capacity alone does not improve game performance.
Recommended SSDs in detail
WD Black SN850X 2 TB — the guide pick for most buyers
Tom’s Hardware’s 2026 guide names the 2 TB WD Black SN850X its best PS5 SSD pick. That recommendation makes it a useful default for a buyer who wants a mainstream 2 TB expansion and is willing to verify the exact package. The guide does not establish a universal performance win or an independently measured result for every PS5 game. Before checkout, identify whether the listing includes a heatsink, then check the total width, length and thickness of that version rather than copying dimensions from a bare-drive listing.
Samsung 990 Pro 2 TB — an alternate fast pick
Tom’s Hardware lists the 2 TB Samsung 990 Pro as an alternate/fastest pick. It is appropriate for a reader who prefers that model and has confirmed a PS5-compatible heatsink configuration. The console still operates within its PCIe Gen4x4 design, and Sony’s caveat about game-to-game performance applies regardless of a higher advertised drive rating. Do not pay a Gen5 premium simply because a product page highlights a newer interface.

WD Black SN850X 8 TB — for the largest installation library
The 8 TB SN850X option addresses the reader who wants the maximum Sony-supported capacity. Its value is the amount of installed storage, not a special PS5 mode. Treat the 8 TB label as a capacity choice only after confirming the exact SKU and cooling dimensions; different capacities or bundles can have different physical assemblies.

WD_BLACK SN850P — officially licensed branding and stated speeds
SanDisk/WD’s infographic describes the WD_BLACK SN850P as officially licensed for PS5 and reports maximum sequential speeds of 7,300 MB/s read and 6,600 MB/s write. The same document says the results come from internal testing and can vary with host, capacity and usage. “Officially licensed” does not remove the need to check the model’s installed heatsink dimensions, and the stated numbers should not be read as a guarantee that every game matches internal-SSD behavior.
A bare SSD with a separate heatsink
A separate cooler can make sense when you already own a compatible bare drive. TechRadar identifies the Sabrent M.2 NVMe PS5 heatsink as an option. Install only a heatsink whose dimensions and mounting method are intended for the PS5 expansion bay. TechRadar’s discussion also notes that the larger ElecGear shield-replacement heatsink fits the original PS5 but not PS5 Slim; this is a reminder to check console-model compatibility rather than assuming every “PS5 heatsink” is interchangeable.
Buying checklist before you place an order
- Read the interface line. It must say PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe and M key. Do not substitute M.2 SATA.
- Check capacity. Keep the selected model between 250 GB and 8 TB and decide whether 2 TB, 4 TB or 8 TB fits your installed-library needs.
- Check the exact SKU. Capacity, heatsink bundle and revision can change the physical dimensions and advertised speed.
- Check sequential read. Prefer a stated 5,500 MB/s or faster rating, while remembering that it is a recommendation and a vendor maximum, not a PS5 game benchmark.
- Check the complete assembly. Add the SSD, heatsink, thermal pads and any cover or mounting hardware when comparing Sony’s 25 mm width, accepted lengths and 11.25 mm thickness limit.
- Confirm cooling. Select a built-in cooler or a separately installed PS5-compatible heatsink. Never stack a second heatsink over a built-in one.
- Check your console model. Installation instructions and heatsink fit can differ between the original PS5 and PS5 Slim.
- Compare total cost. Include the cooler if the drive is bare; no current price comparison is established here, so use the price displayed for the exact package at the time of purchase.
Install and format the SSD safely
Back up anything important and follow the instructions for your specific PS5 model. Sony lists a #1 Phillips or cross-head screwdriver for the installation. The broad sequence is below; use Sony’s illustrations for the cover and expansion-bay location on your hardware.
- Prepare the console. Fully power off the PS5, disconnect the AC cable and accessories, and allow the console to cool. Work on a clean, stable surface so dust and loose screws do not enter the bay.
- Remove the outer cover. Take off the panel specified for your model in Sony’s support instructions. Do not force a panel or substitute a different model’s removal sequence.
- Open the M.2 expansion bay. Remove the bay cover and set its screw aside. Confirm the spacer is positioned for the SSD length you are installing: 30, 42, 60, 80 or 110 mm.
- Install the drive. Insert the M.2 SSD into the connector at the correct angle, then lower it onto the spacer and secure it with the supplied screw. Do not press down on the connector or bend the board.
- Verify the cooling structure. A built-in or separate heatsink must be firmly installed and remain within Sony’s limits. If the drive already has a heatsink, do not add another one.
- Close the bay and replace the cover. Refit the expansion-bay cover and exterior panel before reconnecting power. If the cover will not sit normally, stop and recheck the assembly thickness instead of tightening it against the SSD.
- Format the new drive in the console. Start the PS5 and follow the on-screen prompt to format the M.2 SSD. Formatting erases the SSD’s contents, so a drive containing files you need must be backed up before installation.
- Confirm storage locations. After formatting, use the console’s storage controls to select the M.2 SSD when downloading or moving games. The PS5 will report the available capacity after its system formatting overhead.
What you can play from M.2 storage
PS5 games can be downloaded, updated and played directly from an installed M.2 SSD. This is the reason to choose internal expansion rather than treating the drive as an archive.

USB extended storage works differently: it can hold PS5 games, but those games must be copied back to the console’s internal storage or the M.2 SSD before they can be played. USB is useful for reducing re-downloads, not for adding another immediately playable PS5 library.
If one game behaves unexpectedly from M.2 storage, move that title to the PS5’s internal Ultra-High Speed SSD and test again. Sony’s guidance acknowledges that meeting the published M.2 specification does not guarantee identical performance in every game.
Why a PCIe Gen5 SSD is usually the wrong PS5 purchase
Current PS5 expansion is designed around PCIe Gen4x4. Tom’s Hardware says a PCIe 5.0 drive has no real purpose for PS5 under its current pricing and performance conditions, while Seagate says a Gen5 drive used in a PS5 runs at Gen4 speeds. These are guide and manufacturer statements rather than an independent price survey, but they point to the same buying rule: spend on adequate capacity and a correctly fitting heatsink instead of paying a Gen5 premium that the console cannot use.

The drive is not detected
- Confirm that the drive is NVMe PCIe Gen4x4, not M.2 SATA.
- Power off, reseat the SSD at the correct insertion angle and tighten the retaining screw without over-torquing it.
- Check that the spacer matches the drive length and that no heatsink or thermal pad prevents full insertion.
- Reassemble the bay and restart; a newly installed drive normally requires the PS5’s format prompt before use.
The cover will not close
- Measure the complete assembly, including both sides of a double-sided SSD, thermal pads and the heatsink.
- Keep total thickness at or below 11.25 mm and width at or below 25 mm.
- Remove any second heatsink. A cooler built into the SSD must not be covered by another cooler.
A game has a performance or gameplay issue
- Move the affected game to the internal Ultra-High Speed SSD as Sony recommends.
- Keep the M.2 drive for other titles if they operate normally; the issue does not prove that every compliant M.2 SSD is defective.
- Check the game and console updates before repeating the test.
The SSD contains files you need
Do not accept the format prompt until those files are backed up elsewhere. Formatting the M.2 SSD erases its contents.
Bottom-line selection
For most PS5 owners, start with a 2 TB PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe drive and a heatsink-equipped package that stays within Sony’s dimensions. The WD Black SN850X 2 TB is Tom’s Hardware’s current guide pick, while the Samsung 990 Pro 2 TB is its alternate fast option. Choose an 8 TB model only when maximum installed capacity justifies the cost, and consider the officially licensed WD_BLACK SN850P if that packaging and its stated 7,300 MB/s read and 6,600 MB/s write maximums appeal to you. Whatever model you select, interface, cooling, exact SKU and complete assembly dimensions matter more than a headline speed or a Gen5 label.
