For a single, audio-led YouTube radio stream with a static image or a pre-rendered visual loop, a small Linux VPS running FFmpeg is a practical low-cost, do-it-yourself starting point. Choose by included outbound data transfer before comparing the headline price: at the recommended 720p30 video bitrate of 6 Mbps, a continuous 30-day stream sends about 1.94 TB of data before protocol overhead. A provider-listed US plan at $5/month includes 3 TB, while a low-priced plan with only 500 GiB may not cover that workload.
There is no verified universal “best” VPS here: provider listings are not performance tests, and the right server depends on bitrate, visuals, region, total fees and how much Linux maintenance you are willing to handle. StreamNeo is the cloud alternative to try first if you would rather upload a video, add a YouTube stream key and leave the streaming to a cloud service; it keeps the stream running without a computer at home, supports uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and offers a free first day.

For one fixed visual and a radio feed, compare plans in this order. A monthly transfer allowance that is too small can make an otherwise attractive VPS unsuitable; CPU and memory matter, but a simple FFmpeg loop is a different workload from an OBS desktop with scenes and browser overlays.
- Outbound transfer: Estimate the stream’s data use at its chosen bitrate, then check the provider’s included allowance, overage charges and traffic definition.
- Total monthly cost: Check the current checkout price, applicable tax, IPv4 charges and any transfer overage—not just the advertised starting price.
- Compute and storage: Match CPU and RAM to the encoder and visual workload. A static FFmpeg loop generally needs fewer resources than a GUI-heavy OBS setup, but this is a workload distinction, not a benchmark.
- Region and route: Consider where the server is located and how its network reaches YouTube. A plan’s advertised port speed alone does not establish stream performance.
- Operations: Decide whether you can secure keys, configure automatic process restarts, rotate logs and check YouTube’s stream-health indicators. Provider support and recovery tools also matter.
No VPS in the options below has been independently provisioned or tested for uptime, CPU consistency, stream quality or support. Treat provider specifications as advertised plan terms and confirm them before buying.

Published VPS examples and their trade-offs
These are examples, not a tested ranking. Hostinap’s plan details were listed by the provider and accessed in 2026. The DigitalOcean, Amazon Lightsail and Hetzner figures come from StreamNeo’s secondary-source comparison published in July 2026; verify current prices and terms with each provider before purchase.
| Provider and plan | Published price | Published resources and transfer | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hostinap USVPS1, United States | $5/month | 2 vCPU, 3 GB ECC RAM, 10 GB SSD, 3 TB transfer, 1 Gbit port | Confirm current price, traffic terms, tax and any IPv4 cost at checkout. |
| Hostinap EUVPS1, Germany | $12/month | 1 vCPU, 4 GB ECC RAM, 60 GB NVMe, unmetered traffic, 1 Gbit port | “Unmetered” is the provider’s listing; confirm its applicable terms and current availability. |
| DigitalOcean, $4 plan | $4/month in StreamNeo’s July 2026 comparison | 500 GiB transfer in that comparison | Secondary-source dated figure; confirm current provider pricing and transfer rules. |
| DigitalOcean, $12 plan | $12/month in StreamNeo’s July 2026 comparison | 2,000 GiB transfer in that comparison | Secondary-source dated figure; confirm current provider pricing and transfer rules. |
| Amazon Lightsail Linux bundle | $7/month in StreamNeo’s July 2026 comparison | 2 TB transfer in that comparison | Secondary-source dated figure; confirm current provider pricing and transfer rules. |
| Hetzner CX23, Germany or Finland | €5.49/month in StreamNeo’s July 2026 comparison | Transfer allowance not stated in that comparison | The quoted figure excludes IPv4 and VAT and follows a June 2026 price adjustment; confirm current terms directly. |
For a continuous stream, the Hostinap USVPS1’s listed 3 TB transfer allowance is a closer fit to the approximate 1.94 TB monthly video transfer at 6 Mbps than a plan listed with 500 GiB. That does not establish its real-world performance or guarantee that the allowance covers every chargeable network detail. At 10 Mbps, the approximate 30-day transfer is 3.24 TB before protocol overhead, so a 3 TB cap would be short on the video calculation alone.

Bitrate drives the predictable part of outbound data use. YouTube Help recommends 6 Mbps H.264 for 720p30 and 10 Mbps for 1080p30. Multiplying those rates by 30 days of uninterrupted streaming gives approximately 1.94 TB and 3.24 TB respectively, using decimal terabytes and excluding protocol overhead. These are calculations based on YouTube’s recommended rates, not transfer figures published by YouTube.

- Use the actual video bitrate you expect to send, not just the resolution label.
- Leave room above the estimate for protocol overhead and any other traffic on the VPS.
- Check whether the provider counts outbound data, total data, or applies other limits, and whether overages are billed or capped.
- Recalculate if you change bitrate, stream duration or number of simultaneous streams.
YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR), but the bitrate still needs to suit the selected resolution and frame rate. Consult the current YouTube Live encoder settings rather than assuming one bitrate fits every stream.
FFmpeg or OBS: choose for the visual workload
FFmpeg for a fixed radio visual
FFmpeg is a good fit when the broadcast is a static image or pre-rendered loop paired with an audio stream. A provider-authored 2026 guide suggests 2 vCPU and 2–4 GB RAM as a starting point for a static FFmpeg loop. That is a publisher’s recommendation, not a universal minimum or a measured guarantee; test your own inputs and watch resource use.
OBS for scenes and overlays
OBS may be easier if you need interactive scene composition, browser sources or a graphical workflow, but it adds the overhead of a desktop session and can require more VPS resources. The same provider-authored guide suggests 4 vCPU and 8 GB RAM for 720p OBS scenes, and 6 vCPU and 12 GB RAM for 1080p OBS with browser sources. Treat those figures as starting recommendations from that publisher, not universal requirements. More compute may also be useful for multiple streams or other workloads.

Set up and operate a continuous FFmpeg stream
The exact FFmpeg command depends on your audio source, image or loop, installed codecs and desired output. The technical guide describes combining a static image input with an audio URL, encoding video and audio, then sending the result to YouTube. Do not copy a command without checking its inputs and options: a local file, a network audio feed and a pre-rendered loop need different input handling.
- Prepare the VPS: Set up a supported Linux environment, install FFmpeg and confirm that the image or loop and radio audio source are accessible to the process.
- Configure YouTube Live: Create the broadcast in YouTube Studio and obtain its stream key. Use RTMPS where supported. YouTube recommends RTMPS as a secure extension to RTMP.
- Set the output deliberately: Choose a supported video resolution and frame rate, H.264 video and an audio codec supported by YouTube’s encoder guidance. Use CBR and a two-second keyframe interval; choose a bitrate appropriate to the output and your transfer budget.
- Keep the key secret: Store the stream key outside public scripts, repositories, screenshots and logs. Restrict access to the account and VPS, and rotate the key if it is exposed.
- Run it under a service manager: Configure the process to restart after an unexpected exit and make sure logs rotate so a long-running service does not fill its disk.
- Test before going public: Send representative audio and video motion, check the broadcast in YouTube Studio, and monitor YouTube’s stream-health indicators. A running FFmpeg process does not prove that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.
- Monitor after launch: Check for process restarts, input interruptions, disk growth, CPU or memory pressure, network errors and YouTube stream-health warnings. Confirm that a restart reconnects to the intended broadcast correctly.
YouTube specifically advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Its encoder guidance also recommends testing with audio and video motion similar to the actual stream and monitoring stream health. See YouTube’s encoder guidance for current protocols, supported codecs and settings.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Copyright, stream keys and YouTube policy
A radio stream needs the rights to broadcast the music and any other material it includes. Rights vary by territory and repertoire; confirm your permissions with the relevant rights holders and licensing authorities for the places where you operate and your intended use. A technical how-to is not legal advice. Content ID can affect a stream by muting, interrupting or monetizing it, according to the cited technical guide, so a successful technical test does not establish that the music is cleared.

- Use only audio and visuals you have permission to stream on YouTube.
- Protect the stream key as a credential; anyone with access may be able to broadcast through your stream.
- Review YouTube’s applicable live-stream and copyright policies, and monitor Studio for notices or stream-health issues.
- Do not assume that a looped or pre-recorded broadcast is exempt from copyright or other YouTube rules.
Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube receives no signal or the broadcast drops | FFmpeg exited, the audio input failed, or the network connection was interrupted. | Check service logs and input availability; confirm the service manager restarts the process; inspect YouTube Studio’s stream-health status. |
| Video looks unstable or YouTube reports stream issues | Output settings may not match YouTube’s guidance, or the VPS may be under pressure. | Check resolution, frame rate, CBR, bitrate and the two-second keyframe interval against YouTube’s current encoder guidance. Watch CPU, memory and network use during a representative test. |
| Transfer allowance runs out or incurs overages | The continuous bitrate needs more data than the plan includes. | Recalculate from the actual bitrate and stream duration, include overhead, then compare with the provider’s traffic and overage terms. |
| The audio stops while the process remains running | The upstream audio URL or input may have stalled without terminating FFmpeg. | Check the input source and logs, then verify audio at YouTube rather than relying only on process status. |
| The stream is muted, interrupted or claimed | Music or other material may trigger Content ID or a rights issue. | Review YouTube notices and contact the relevant rights holders or licensing authorities; technical settings cannot grant broadcast rights. |
| The VPS becomes unstable with OBS | Scenes, browser sources or encoding may exceed the server’s available resources. | Measure resource use during a representative test; simplify the scene or compare a larger VPS with an FFmpeg workflow if the visuals are fixed. |
