For a short trip through the United States, Mexico, or Canada, T-Mobile Prepaid U.S. Pass is the clearest documented low-cost choice: $25 for 7 days or $30 for 10 days, with unlimited talk and text across all three countries. For an emergency backup line, compare AT&T Prepaid and Verizon Prepaid after checking coverage at the places you need service. For a dedicated second number, PureTalk explicitly offers a Second Phone Number feature, with regular prices of $24.99–$64.99 per month after its introductory month. The right choice depends on whether you need a real voice-and-SMS number, data only, a physical SIM or eSIM, and service for days or an ongoing year.

| Use case | Plan | Published price | What is documented | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Short travel in the US, Mexico, and Canada | T-Mobile Prepaid U.S. Pass | $25 for 7 days; $30 for 10 days | Unlimited talk and text in all three countries; U.S. premium 5G data; a smaller high-speed data allowance in Mexico and Canada; instant activation at purchase; refillable | Choose the duration that covers the trip. Taxes, country terms, data allowances, and pricing can change. |
| Emergency backup or ongoing US line | AT&T Prepaid | Not stated in the available plan details | Physical SIM and eSIM activation; an unlocked-device compatibility check | Check coverage and device eligibility before buying. |
| Emergency backup or ongoing US line | Verizon Prepaid | As low as $35 per month with loyalty discounts | eSIM activation through the My Verizon app; prepaid service | The advertised floor depends on loyalty discounts and is not necessarily the first-month price. |
| Second number with international use | PureTalk | $24.99–$64.99 per month after the introductory month | A feature labeled Second Phone Number; travel-ready service in 100+ countries | The 50% discount applies to the first billing cycle; regular pricing begins in month two. |
| Swiss prepaid service | Swisscom | CHF 6.90 for 30 days | Price shown on its 2026 prepaid page | The available plan details do not establish the included data, voice, SMS, or countries, so verify the package before purchase. |

A short North American trip
The T-Mobile Prepaid U.S. Pass is the most completely documented short-term option in this comparison. The 7-day pass costs $25 and the 10-day pass costs $30 on the 2026 plan page. Both include unlimited talk and text in the United States, Mexico, and Canada. Data treatment is different by country: the plan provides premium 5G data in the United States and a smaller high-speed allowance when you are in Mexico or Canada.

The pass activates instantly at purchase and can be refilled. That makes it useful when you need service immediately after landing rather than waiting for a mailed starter kit. Confirm the current country list, high-speed allowances, taxes, and refill terms at checkout because prepaid terms can change.

AT&T Prepaid and Verizon Prepaid are the practical starting points for a US emergency line, but neither should be selected on price alone. A backup only helps when its network reaches the location where your primary service fails. Compare each carrier’s current coverage map with your home, workplace, travel routes, and any locations where you may need help.

AT&T documents both physical-SIM and eSIM activation and provides an unlocked-device compatibility check. Verizon documents eSIM activation through the My Verizon app and advertises prepaid service as low as $35 per month when loyalty discounts are applied. Verify the actual first-month price, discount conditions, taxes, refill date, and data or hotspot rules before you activate.
A separate number for calls, texts, or verification
PureTalk is the clearest match when the goal is a second mobile number rather than only extra data. Its plan page labels a feature Second Phone Number and says the service is travel-ready in more than 100 countries. The regular monthly range shown after the promotional first month is $24.99–$64.99. The 50% introductory discount applies only to the first billing cycle, so budget using the month-two price if you expect to keep the line.
Confirm that the exact plan gives you the native voice, SMS, and verification messages you need. A service that supplies data through an app or a data-only eSIM is not automatically equivalent to a carrier-issued mobile number.
What to compare before buying
Total cost for the period you actually need
For travel, compare the full trip cost rather than a monthly price. A $25 seven-day pass and a $30 ten-day pass cover different periods, and a trip that runs beyond the selected duration may require a refill or another plan. For a second number, multiply the regular monthly price by the number of months you expect to keep the line; do not use a first-month promotion as the long-term budget.
Include taxes, activation charges, a possible physical-SIM purchase, refill minimums, and any international add-ons. Verizon’s phrase as low as $35 per month is conditional on loyalty discounts, while PureTalk’s lower first-cycle price is promotional.
Coverage and network redundancy
Coverage is location-specific. A second SIM on the same network family as your primary line may fail in the same place, so examine maps and local experience before treating it as redundancy. Check indoor coverage, rural roads, border areas, and the destinations you visit most often. No prepaid plan can guarantee a signal in every building or neighborhood.

- STAY CONNECTED WORLDWIDE: Unlimited calling from the U.S. to 90+ international destinations including India, Mexico, Canada, China, the U.K. and more.
- RELIABLE NATIONWIDE COVERAGE: Enjoy 8GB of high-speed 5G/4G LTE data on the T-Mobile 5G Network.
- TRAVEL ACROSS NORTH AMERICA: Unlimited talk and text in Mexico and Canada plus international roaming credit.
- BRING YOUR OWN PHONE: Activate your compatible unlocked phone with the included 3-in-1 SIM card or eSIM. Keep your number or get a new one.
- NO CONTRACTS: Prepaid wireless with no annual contracts, no credit checks, and no hidden fees.
Real number versus data-only connectivity
Ask whether the plan supplies a carrier mobile number with ordinary voice calls and SMS. Many travel eSIMs are data-focused. They can provide internet access for maps, messaging apps, and internet calling without giving you a local number or accepting carrier verification texts. If banks, delivery services, or two-factor codes must reach the line, verify native SMS support before payment.
Recommended Free Tools
eSIM or physical SIM
An eSIM is embedded in the handset rather than inserted as a removable card. T-Mobile describes it as a digital version of a physical SIM embedded in the device. eSIM activation is convenient for a last-minute trip and leaves the physical slot free, but the phone must support eSIM and be eligible for the carrier.
A physical prepaid SIM starter kit remains useful for an unlocked phone with a SIM slot, for moving service between compatible handsets, or for travelers whose devices do not support eSIM. An eSIM-only phone needs a downloadable plan; it cannot use a plastic SIM as a fallback.
Number retention and pausing
If you want the number later, find out what happens when you stop paying. Ask about the refill grace period, expiration date, port-out rules, and whether the number is released after cancellation. A cheap line that silently expires is not a reliable long-term second number. Save the account credentials and renewal date somewhere you will see before the line lapses.

Prices and allowances
| Pass | Price on the 2026 page | Talk and text | Data description |

| 10 days | $30 | Unlimited in the United States, Mexico, and Canada | Premium 5G data in the United States; smaller high-speed allowance in Mexico and Canada |
The 10-day pass is only $5 more than the 7-day pass on the published page, but the correct choice is the one that matches your itinerary and the current terms at checkout. The available details do not state the exact high-speed data quantities, hotspot rules, or post-allowance speeds, so check those items if you plan to tether a laptop or use heavy video.

- WHO SHOULD GET IT: Anyone who hates their phone bill
Who should not choose it
This pass is not automatically the best solution for a year-round second number. Its documented value is a defined travel period, while ongoing service requires you to examine renewal and number-retention terms. It also may not suit someone whose priority is a large Canada or Mexico high-speed data allowance rather than unlimited talk and text.
AT&T Prepaid: flexible SIM formats for a backup line
Why it fits emergency use
AT&T Prepaid supports both a removable SIM and eSIM activation. That gives you a path whether your unlocked phone has a physical slot, is eSIM-only, or supports dual SIM. The carrier also provides an unlocked-device compatibility check. Run that check before purchase; an incompatible or carrier-locked handset can prevent activation even when the plan itself is suitable.
Checks to make before activation
- Confirm that the phone is unlocked and appears as compatible in the carrier’s checker.
- Compare coverage at home, work, travel destinations, and likely emergency locations.
- Choose physical SIM or eSIM based on the handset, not on the accessory you already have.
- Verify the plan’s data allowance, hotspot policy, taxes, refill date, and number-retention terms.
The available plan information does not establish one universal AT&T Prepaid price, so use the checkout total rather than assuming the cost of another prepaid product applies.

Price qualification
Verizon advertises prepaid service as low as $35 per month with loyalty discounts. That wording describes a discounted floor, not a guaranteed price for a new account. Ask when loyalty savings begin, what payment history qualifies, and what the rate becomes without the discount. Include taxes and any device or activation costs in your comparison.
Activation path
Verizon documents eSIM activation in the My Verizon app. Use a Wi-Fi connection during setup, keep the phone’s software current, and follow the app’s eligibility checks. If the app cannot offer an eSIM, do not assume the plan is unavailable; the handset, account, region, or current device support may be the limiting factor. Verify the available physical-SIM route or select another compatible plan.
When it is a good backup
Verizon Prepaid makes sense when its coverage is stronger at the places where your primary carrier is weak and when you can meet the conditions for the advertised loyalty rate. It is less attractive if you need only a few days of travel service or if you cannot keep the account active long enough to earn the discount.

PureTalk: a purpose-built second-number option
Feature and pricing
PureTalk’s page explicitly labels a Second Phone Number feature, which directly addresses the need for a separate line for work, marketplace listings, family, or service registrations. The regular price range shown after the first month is $24.99–$64.99 per month. Its page also describes the service as travel-ready in 100+ countries.

Questions to answer before relying on the number
- Is the second number a native mobile number that receives ordinary SMS, including verification codes?
- Can you port an existing number into it, and what happens if you later cancel?
- What countries are covered for calls, SMS, and data, rather than merely listed as travel-ready?
- What is the refill date and grace period if you pause use?
Swisscom: a price reference for Switzerland
Swisscom lists a CHF 6.90 price for 30 days on its 2026 prepaid page. That figure can be useful when comparing a Swiss local option with a roaming product, but the available information does not state the included data, voice, SMS, network conditions, or eligibility requirements. Treat the price as a starting point and verify the complete package, activation method, and number validity before purchase.
How to set up a low-cost SIM safely
- Check the handset. Confirm that it is unlocked, supports the required SIM format, and is compatible with the chosen carrier. AT&T provides an explicit compatibility check; other carriers also perform device eligibility checks during activation.
- Check the destination. Compare coverage maps for every important location. For cross-border travel, verify that the plan includes the countries you will enter, not just the country where you bought it.
- Decide whether you need a number. If you need calls, SMS, or verification codes, reject data-only plans unless they clearly provide another supported number.
- Choose eSIM or physical SIM. Use eSIM for compatible phones and immediate digital delivery; use a physical SIM for a compatible slot, easy handset transfer, or a device without eSIM.
- Read the renewal terms. Record the exact price after any promotion, the refill date, taxes, expiry period, and number-retention policy.
- Activate on Wi-Fi. Install the eSIM or insert the card, complete the carrier’s identity and device checks, and wait for the activation confirmation. T-Mobile’s U.S. Pass is advertised as activating instantly at purchase; Verizon’s eSIM flow uses the My Verizon app.
- Test every required service. Place a call, send and receive an SMS, load a webpage, and test any verification message before disabling your primary line.
- Configure dual SIM deliberately. On a dual-SIM phone, keep your home line enabled for its existing number if the handset and carriers support simultaneous operation. Select the travel line for mobile data and specify which line handles outgoing calls and messages.
- Secure the account. Save the account email, password, activation details, and refill date. Keep the physical SIM packaging and its identifiers if you may need support.
Using dual SIM for travel without losing your home number
A dual-SIM phone can keep the primary SIM active while a travel eSIM supplies data. This arrangement lets incoming messages reach the existing number while maps and other internet traffic use the travel line. Availability depends on the handset’s SIM design and each carrier’s support, so test it before departure.
Set the travel line as the data line, and check the phone’s roaming settings so the home line does not unexpectedly use roaming data. If you need to make calls from the home number, confirm the roaming rates first. A data-only travel eSIM can still be useful in this arrangement, but it does not become a second voice number merely because it is installed.
Building a real emergency backup
Use a different network where possible
The value of a backup is redundancy. If your main carrier has no signal, a second line on the same network may fail for the same reason. Compare network maps and choose the service with the best probability of working at your home, workplace, and regular travel destinations.

Keep the line ready, not merely purchased
- Charge the spare handset or keep the dual-SIM phone above a practical battery level.
- Install updates and complete activation while you have reliable Wi-Fi.
- Make a test call and send a test SMS periodically.
- Set a calendar reminder before the refill or expiration date.
- Store essential contacts and account recovery information offline.
A backup line is only useful while its account is active, its number has not expired, and the device can connect to the network. Check those conditions before an emergency, not during one.
Troubleshooting common failures
The eSIM option does not appear
Check whether the phone is eSIM-capable and unlocked, whether the exact model is supported in your region, and whether the carrier requires activation through its app. If any check fails, use a compatible physical SIM where available or choose another plan.
Data works but calls or SMS do not
This usually indicates that the product is data-focused or that voice and SMS were not included in the selected tier. Review the plan description and test the number before relying on it for verification. Messaging apps can provide conversations over data, but they do not replace carrier SMS for every service.

Recheck activation status, restart the phone, and confirm that the intended line is enabled. Then compare the location with the carrier’s coverage map. If the primary and backup lines use the same network area, move to a location where the alternate carrier is known to operate before concluding that the handset is defective.
The bill rises after the first month
Promotions are often limited to one billing cycle. PureTalk states that its 50% discount applies to the first billing cycle and that regular pricing begins in month two. Verizon’s advertised $35 floor depends on loyalty discounts. Read the renewal amount before activation and cancel or change the plan before the next charge if it no longer fits your budget.
The number disappears after a pause
Prepaid numbers can be reclaimed after an account remains unpaid or canceled. Check the refill grace period and retention policy, and keep the line funded if the number is tied to accounts or verification. If you plan to leave permanently, ask about porting the number before closing the service.
