Start with a computer you already own, OBS Studio, and a stable wired internet connection if available. For recorded coaching lessons, test a 720p/30 fps stream first, keep a local recording, and plan for shorter YouTube sessions if you need reliable replays: YouTube says a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured. This can keep equipment costs low, but a home setup is only as dependable as its computer, connection, power, and restart plan.
What you need for a low-cost setup
You do not need a dedicated streaming PC or expensive production gear to begin. YouTube’s live-streaming tips say, “You do not need expensive equipment, what you have at hand will do.” Start with the equipment you already have, then spend only to address a problem your tests reveal.

- A computer that can play the lesson and encode continuously. Check for overheating, dropped frames, and adequate free storage during a realistic test. No universal computer specification is established for every prerecorded coaching workload.
- OBS Studio to send the video to YouTube. OBS recommends its Auto-Configuration Wizard for basic settings.
- A reliable upload connection. Measure upload speed at the place and time you expect to stream; download speed alone does not tell you whether the outgoing stream will be stable.
- Local storage for a backup recording. Capacity depends on recording quality and how long you need to retain files.
- A microphone only if the stream includes live speech. For prerecorded lessons with finished audio, an extra microphone may not be needed. If you introduce lessons or teach live between recordings, prioritize clear, intelligible speech over buying gear for its own sake.
A UPS for the computer and router is a conditional purchase if brief power interruptions are a problem at your location. Its required capacity and runtime depend on the actual devices and load; do not choose one on an assumed universal runtime.

Set up OBS and YouTube
- Confirm the channel can go live. Verify the channel for live streaming and check that it has no live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days. YouTube’s “Get started” live-streaming guidance describes these prerequisites.
- Create or select a stream in YouTube Live Control Room. Use the encoder workflow and copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, choose YouTube as the service, and use the stream key or account connection option presented by your OBS version. If entering it manually, paste the YouTube stream key into OBS and use the supplied server/URL if the form asks for it. Keep the key private: anyone with it may be able to broadcast to that destination. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Live Control Room and update OBS.
- Run the Auto-Configuration Wizard. In OBS, open Tools > Auto-Configuration Wizard and follow its prompts for a starting configuration. Menu labels may vary by OBS version. Treat the result as a starting point, not proof that the computer or connection can run unattended.
- Set the output and check the preview. Start with the lesson’s native aspect ratio and a modest resolution. Confirm that slides are legible, audio is audible and synchronized, and no unwanted desktop notifications or private material appear.
- Preview before going live. In Live Control Room, check the incoming preview and stream health, then start the stream from OBS when the picture and sound are correct. Test the whole lesson loop before relying on it.
Choose resolution, bitrate, and audio settings
YouTube’s current H.264 live-encoder guidance, accessed in 2026, recommends the following ingest bitrates. They are recommendations, not guaranteed optimal settings for every encoder, lesson, or network.

For a lesson dominated by slides, begin at 720p/30 fps and inspect the viewer-side result. Move to 1080p/30 fps only if the extra detail matters and your tested connection can sustain it. YouTube transcodes incoming live streams for viewers, so sending a high-resolution source is not required just to provide viewers with playback choices.
- Rate control: use CBR, as YouTube recommends for live encoding.
- Keyframes: set a two-second interval; YouTube advises not exceeding four seconds.
- Audio: YouTube recommends AAC or MP3 audio. Listen for clipping, low volume, and desynchronization during a test.
- Frame rate: 30 fps is a sensible starting point for slides and ordinary coaching footage; a higher frame rate is not automatically useful for static material.
OBS setting names and available encoder choices can vary with the version and computer. OBS advises using an available hardware encoder for recording; check the wizard’s recommendations and test the resulting output rather than assuming one encoder is best for every machine.
Check upload bandwidth before committing to 24/7
YouTube recommends leaving about 20% upload headroom above the total streaming bitrate, with more room needed if other household traffic or a backup stream uses the connection. That margin is planning guidance, not a guarantee against congestion or outages.

The headroom figures are arithmetic based on YouTube’s stated bitrates and 20% recommendation; they do not include other devices’ traffic or a second stream. Run a speed test on the intended computer, network, and time of day, and repeat it when conditions change. Prefer Ethernet over Wi-Fi where practical, but judge the actual setup by a sustained stream test rather than the connection label or a single speed-test result.
Make recording and replay part of the plan
Keep a local copy
YouTube’s streaming tips recommend checking the integrity of a local archive and confirming that its file size grows during recording. In OBS, enable local recording before the test, verify the chosen save location has room, and play the resulting file from beginning to end before depending on it. Storage needs cannot be reduced to one safe number without knowing the recording quality and retention period.
Do not rely on one 24-hour YouTube archive
YouTube’s archive guidance says streams shorter than 12 hours may be automatically archived, while longer streams may not be captured at all. Its warning is explicit: “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” If replay access matters, use planned sessions shorter than 12 hours, verify each archive in YouTube Studio, and retain your local recording. YouTube’s guidance does not make an archive guaranteed even for a shorter stream.

Test the failure cases before leaving it unattended
A stream that works for one lesson is not automatically ready to run around the clock. YouTube advises testing the stream, monitoring stream health, and checking local files. OBS and YouTube guidance do not guarantee recovery from every power loss or network interruption, nor establish one universal playlist-loop or unattended-restart setup.
- Run the intended sequence of lessons for a meaningful test period. Check that the playlist or playback method advances as intended, and that the stream does not end when a file finishes.
- Check stream health in Live Control Room while OBS is running. Watch for dropped frames, buffering, audio problems, and an upload rate that cannot hold steady.
- Simulate a brief connection interruption if it is safe to do so. Observe what actually happens, and document the recovery steps you can perform.
- Test the restart process after closing OBS and, separately, after restarting the computer. Confirm whether the stream resumes as intended rather than assuming that it will.
- Verify the local recording and any YouTube archive after the test. Do not leave a stream unattended until you know where recordings are saved and how to recover the broadcast.
If you need dependable unattended operation, first identify the specific failure you need to cover: a dropped YouTube connection, a home internet outage, a power cut, a computer crash, or simply the need to avoid leaving a computer running. Those are different problems and may require different solutions.
Copyright, reused lessons, and monetization
You may have permission to stream a recording and still need to consider how YouTube treats repetitive content for monetization. YouTube’s monetization policy says repetitive or mass-produced material falls under its “inauthentic content” policy and is ineligible for monetization under that policy. Repeatedly broadcasting the same recorded coaching lessons may therefore create monetization review risk. That is not a prediction of a channel-specific decision; make the stream meaningfully useful and original, and do not assume putting existing lessons in a live-stream wrapper makes them monetizable.

Check that you have the necessary rights to every lesson, music track, image, and other included material. Copyright permission and monetization eligibility are separate questions. Review YouTube’s current policy pages and your channel’s Studio notifications before building a business plan around a continuous replay.
YouTube Creator Liaison Rene Ritchie’s August 12, 2026 explanation distinguishes qualified watch hours from archived livestreams: public long-form videos, including archived livestreams, can contribute qualified watch hours, while streams that are not archived do not. Check the stream’s archive and the channel’s status in Studio rather than assuming a day-long broadcast will count as expected.

The lowest-cost starting point is to use a computer and connection you already have, with OBS as the encoder. No specific rupee budget is responsible without verified prices for equipment, broadband, power backup, or the computer you own. Test first, then buy only what a demonstrated problem justifies: a microphone for unclear live speech, backup power for interruptions, or another arrangement if the home computer must not remain on.
