Configure the stream in YouTube Studio, test it before going public, and choose an output the computer and internet connection can sustain. A consumer computer can be a low-cost starting point, but neither YouTube nor OBS promises uninterrupted 24/7 operation.
Choose between a computer at home and a cloud service
For a do-it-yourself setup, start with existing hardware rather than buying a powerful PC by default. It must run an encoder reliably at the resolution and frame rate you choose, stay powered and cool, and have a stable internet connection. OBS says its system requirements are a compatibility floor, not proof that a system can stream successfully (OBS system requirements).

Use narration, music, artwork, and other material for which you have the necessary rights, and keep licenses or permissions available. YouTube’s live-stream terms address rights for live and archived content, including music; prerecorded material is not exempt from copyright or platform rules (YouTube live-stream terms).

Mark content for children accurately
If the stream is directed to children, designate it as Made for Kids in the Live Control Room. YouTube says creators are responsible for choosing the correct audience setting rather than relying on automated classification alone (audience settings). Made for Kids streams have feature restrictions, including live chat, comments, personalized advertising, and Super Chat or Super Stickers (feature restrictions). Plan the stream without those features.
Set up the low-cost OBS and YouTube Live workflow
- Check channel eligibility. YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-stream restrictions in the previous 90 days to stream. Enable live streaming and confirm access before preparing a long broadcast (YouTube live-stream onboarding).
- Create an encoder stream. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream and select the encoder workflow. Copy the stream URL and stream key into OBS. Treat the key like a password; do not share it, and reset it if compromised (encoder setup; stream-key guidance).
- Add the prerecorded story. In OBS, add the video as a media source and configure it to restart or loop if you want the same file to repeat. Check that picture and audio play correctly, and that the video does not unexpectedly end or expose an unintended desktop or scene.
- Choose a sustainable output. YouTube recommends RTMPS. For typical SDR H.264, its guidance specifies CBR, AAC or MP3 audio, and a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds). Its recommended H.264 video bitrate is 3 Mbps for 720p30 and 10 Mbps for 1080p30 (YouTube encoder settings). These are ingest recommendations, not a promise about your internet plan or viewers’ quality. For a mostly static story image, 720p30 is a reasonable starting point if the computer or upload connection is limited; test the actual output and use YouTube’s stream-health indicators.
- Preview before going public. Start the encoder and check the Live Control Room preview for audio, image, and stream health before making the broadcast public. YouTube’s encoder instructions describe connecting the stream and checking the preview (encoder setup).
- Test the intended workload. Run the chosen resolution, frame rate, scene, and encoder on the actual machine. OBS notes that hardware encoding can reduce CPU workload when supported, but no particular GPU is established as necessary for a static story stream (OBS hardware encoding).
Plan for archives and 24/7 interruptions
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its cited guidance does not establish that a longer stream will be archived, so if keeping a replay matters, plan broadcasts shorter than that threshold and verify current behavior in Live Control Room before relying on it (YouTube encoder setup). Shorter sessions may mean scheduled restarts; do not assume an encoder can automate them safely without testing.

Continuous operation also depends on local power, internet, cooling, source-file integrity, and reconnect behavior. YouTube’s tips recommend testing the encoder, checking that local archive files are growing, verifying access from channel and watch pages and mobile, and monitoring audio and video (YouTube live-stream tips). Those checks matter even when the story file itself keeps playing: the encoder or network can fail independently.
What a low-cost setup does—and does not—cost
Using a computer you already own avoids an immediate hardware purchase, but the ongoing cost depends on that machine, electricity rates, internet service, maintenance, and storage. No universal power use, ISP price, upload-speed margin, or total monthly cost is established here. If buying a dedicated mini PC, compare its price and operating costs with the computer you have, and confirm its operating-system and encoder support and sustained-use suitability rather than treating a model as proven for 24/7 streaming.

Monetization is uncertain, especially for repetitive streams
Do not build the budget around ad income or unrestricted engagement features. YouTube says live ad slots are not guaranteed to serve (live ads). Its monetization policy, clarified on July 15, 2025, calls repetitive or mass-produced material “inauthentic content” and applies to live streams; repeating the same story or minimally varied material can therefore create monetization risk. YouTube decides eligibility in its review, and no particular channel’s outcome can be predicted (monetization policy).
