Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →For most homes with a sub-gigabit internet plan, the TP-Link Archer AX55 is the strongest low-cost single-router pick: it combines Wi-Fi 6 with better-supported range and performance than the cheaper Archer AX10. Choose the AX10 if the lowest purchase cost matters most; consider the Wi-Fi 7 Archer BE230 if you need 2.5Gbps wired connections, not if you expect it to solve a range problem. Large homes with dead zones may need mesh rather than one budget router.
Best low-cost router for most homes: TP-Link Archer AX55
The Archer AX55 is a sensible default for a typical home using broadband below gigabit speeds. RTINGS names it its best budget router in its 2026 guide, and Tom’s Guide independently names it the best budget Wi-Fi 6 router. Both recommendations support choosing it over a cheaper model when balanced performance and coverage matter.

RTINGS describes the AX55 as a dual-band Wi-Fi 6 router and reports that it handled internet speeds up to about 750 Mbps at close range in its tests, remaining useful at distances approaching 100 feet. In Tom’s Guide’s 2026 test environment, it delivered 823.7 Mbps at 15 feet and 288.4 Mbps at 50 feet. These are separate reviewers’ results under their own testing conditions, not speeds to expect in every home. Walls, placement, interference, and the devices connecting to the router all affect actual coverage and throughput. RTINGS’ budget-router guide and Tom’s Guide’s AX55 review provide the underlying context.
Tom’s Guide lists one gigabit WAN port, four gigabit LAN ports, and a USB 3.0 port. The key limitation is that it has no multi-gigabit port: a faster broadband plan or wired device cannot use more than gigabit-class connectivity through those ports. RTINGS also finds that the AX55 has significantly better range than the BE230, while the AX55 remains more cost-effective for most users.

When to choose the cheaper Archer AX10
The TP-Link Archer AX10 is the lower-cost fallback if purchase price is the deciding factor and your needs are modest. RTINGS calls it its best cheap router, identifies it as Wi-Fi 6, and reports up to 600 Mbps at close range in its testing, with useful performance around 100 feet. RTINGS ranks the AX55 above it as the main budget choice, so treat the AX10 as a way to spend less rather than as the better all-rounder. See RTINGS’ budget-router comparisons.
Router prices and stock vary by region and retailer; check the exact listing rather than relying on a general “cheap router” label. No current AX10 price is established here.

When a Wi-Fi 7 router is worth considering
The TP-Link Archer BE230 is a conditional alternative for buyers who need faster wired connectivity or want a Wi-Fi 7-generation router. TechRadar identifies it as a dual-band BE3600 Wi-Fi 7 model with two 2.5Gbps ports and three gigabit ports. The 2.5Gbps connections matter when your internet service or wired equipment can exceed gigabit speeds. TechRadar’s BE230 coverage describes its ports and bands.

Do not assume that the Wi-Fi 7 label means the BE230 includes every Wi-Fi band: it is dual-band and has no 6GHz band. RTINGS says it offers slightly higher top speeds and a faster WAN port than the AX55, but the AX55 has significantly better range and is more cost-effective for most uses. The BE230 is therefore a better fit for a multi-gigabit connection or wired desktop/NAS than for someone whose main problem is weak signal in distant rooms. RTINGS’ comparison and TechRadar’s BE230 details support these distinctions.

If a single router leaves dead zones across a large or obstructed home, adding mesh nodes may address the coverage problem more directly than buying a faster standalone router. Tom’s Guide describes the TP-Link Deco XE75 as a Wi-Fi 6E mesh system and a larger-home alternative. It belongs in a different category from the low-cost single-router picks: mesh requires multiple units and sits at a different price tier. Its price and coverage depend on the package and conditions, so verify current details before purchase. Tom’s Guide’s router coverage discusses the XE75 alternative.

How to choose the right low-cost router
- Match wired capacity to your internet plan. The AX55’s WAN and LAN connections are gigabit-class. The BE230’s 2.5Gbps ports are more useful if your broadband plan or wired devices exceed gigabit; otherwise, newer port speeds may not improve your connection.
- Decide whether range or peak speed is the priority. Review measurements help compare models, but they cannot guarantee coverage through your home’s walls and floors. RTINGS favors the AX55 over the BE230 for range; Tom’s Guide’s AX55 figures are tied to its stated test distances.
- Check the bands, not just the Wi-Fi generation. Wi-Fi 6 is adequate for many households with sub-gigabit plans. The BE230 is Wi-Fi 7 but dual-band and lacks 6GHz, so do not buy it expecting that band.
- Count the ports and extras you will use. The AX55 offers four gigabit LAN ports and USB 3.0, while the BE230 adds two 2.5Gbps ports alongside three gigabit ports. Consider whether you need wired connections, USB sharing, or mesh expansion rather than paying for features you will not use.
- Verify the specific listing. Check regional availability, exact hardware version, security-update support, and price before purchasing. Stock and prices change, and a router’s capabilities or support can vary by hardware version or market.
