For an ultra-low-cost Home Assistant room controller, start with the ESP32-2432S028R, commonly called the Cheap Yellow Display (CYD). The usual board combines an ESP32, a 2.8-inch 320 × 240 TFT, resistive touch, USB programming and power, microSD, a light sensor, an RGB LED and a speaker-amplifier output in a compact 50 × 86 mm module. It is a good fit for a few glanceable readings and large control buttons. Move to a 4-inch or 4.3-inch capacitive-touch board when you need more dashboard tiles on one page, finer graphics or easier finger input. The important qualification is that CYD is a family name, not one fixed circuit: verify the exact display and touch controllers before selecting an ESPHome configuration.

Quick recommendation

Choose the CYD ESP32-2432S028R when price, compact size and an integrated parts list matter most. Its 2.8-inch screen is large enough for room temperature, humidity, lights, scenes and a few status indicators, while the onboard light sensor can support automatic brightness. A community ESPHome/LVGL dashboard demonstrates six customizable sensor slots, tap actions that call Home Assistant scripts or automations, and light-sensor-driven brightness on a CYD. That project also notes two practical requirements: touch may need calibration, and service calls must be enabled for interactive controls to trigger Home Assistant actions. Treat those capabilities as a project example rather than a guarantee for every hardware revision.

Select a larger panel if the display will be a primary wall interface rather than a focused room controller. Examples documented by the Home Assistant community include a 4-inch, 480 × 480 Guition ESP32-S3-4848S040 with capacitive touch and a 4.3-inch, 800 × 480 Waveshare ESP32-S3-Touch-LCD-4.3 with capacitive touch. Their larger areas and resolutions can fit more or larger tiles without as many page changes, but they normally involve a higher board, enclosure and mounting cost. No comparable current price was established for those two models.

What the CYD board includes

The commonly documented ESP32-2432S028R is an integrated module rather than a separate microcontroller, display and touch-controller project. The vendor specification identifies a 2.8-inch TFT at 320 × 240 pixels and module dimensions of 50.0 × 86.0 mm. The same specification lists the following onboard hardware:

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • ESP32 microcontroller for Wi-Fi-enabled Home Assistant connectivity.
  • ILI9341-class TFT display on the commonly documented revision.
  • XPT2046 resistive-touch controller.
  • USB connection used for programming and power; the widely seen version uses micro-USB.
  • MicroSD card slot for projects that need local assets or storage.
  • RGB status LED.
  • Ambient-light sensor, useful for an automatic brightness rule.
  • Speaker-amplifier output for projects that provide audio hardware.

These details come from the ESP32 CYD 2.8-inch board specification and the Shenzhen Jingcai Intelligent product specification PDF. They describe a board family member, not a promise that every marketplace listing has identical parts.

Why 2.8 inches works for a room panel

At 320 × 240 pixels, the CYD is best used as a deliberately limited interface. A page might show a room name, two or three environmental readings, a light status, and large buttons for a scene or script. The small footprint is useful beside a doorway, on a desk or in a shallow wall enclosure. It also reduces the amount of enclosure and cable management needed compared with a tablet-sized display.

The trade-off is density. Small labels and closely packed controls are harder to read and tap, especially when several family members use the panel. A CYD can provide multiple pages, but changing pages is a design decision rather than a free increase in screen area. If your intended layout contains many device controls at once, start by sketching the actual tile sizes before buying.

CYD is a family, so identify the exact revision

Do not buy a board from a product photo, copy a pin map from an unrelated tutorial and assume the firmware will work. ESPHome’s official MIPI SPI display documentation lists several integrated-board and CYD-related variants. It distinguishes the original micro-USB ESP32-2432S028 with an ILI9341 display controller from dual-USB versions that may use ST7789V or ILI9342 controllers.

The controller affects the display component, initialization settings and often the pins used by the display or touch interface. A dual-USB board can therefore require a different configuration from a micro-USB board even when both are advertised as a CYD. Before flashing, record:

Use those identifiers to select the ESPHome component and pin configuration. If the seller does not provide them, regard the listing as a compatibility risk rather than an interchangeable CYD.

Board comparison for a Home Assistant dashboard

The following models and specifications are the combinations described in the Home Assistant community project and the ESPHome documentation. Larger screens are feature trade-offs, not a tested ranking.

Board example Screen Resolution Touch Best fit
ESP32-2432S028R (CYD) 2.8-inch TFT 320 × 240 Resistive Compact status and control panel with a few large tiles
Guition ESP32-S3-4848S040 4-inch 480 × 480 Capacitive More square dashboard tiles and less page switching
Waveshare ESP32-S3-Touch-LCD-4.3 4.3-inch 800 × 480 Capacitive Wider layouts with more controls or larger graphics

These examples can have different display and touch controllers from one another. Confirm the exact controller and ESPHome support for the particular revision you receive; a similar connector or screen size is not sufficient evidence.

Resistive versus capacitive touch

Resistive touch detects pressure through a flexible touch layer. It can respond to a finger or stylus and is common on the CYD, but controls should be generously sized and spaced. Capacitive touch, used by the two larger examples above, is generally suited to light fingertip taps and modern gesture-oriented layouts. The choice affects how you design buttons, not just how the screen feels: a layout that is tolerable on a 4.3-inch capacitive panel may be cramped on a 2.8-inch resistive one.

Screen area and tile planning

The community project maps the larger panels to more dashboard tiles per page. That is a useful planning heuristic: count the entities and actions that must be visible without navigation, then estimate a minimum tile size that a person can read and tap from the intended distance. This is an editorial design inference from the documented dimensions and examples, not a controlled usability measurement.

Price and total project cost

Published figures for the CYD are indicative observations, not a consistent live retail comparison. An ESPboards.dev listing viewed in 2026 displayed $10.49 for one CYD model; see the CYD ESP32-2432S028 pinout and specifications page. A Home Assistant Community project author described the CYD as the cheapest of that project’s set at around €15 in 2026; the context is in Introducing ESP Screens. Neither number is a guaranteed current price, and the currencies, sellers, regions, shipping and tax are not directly comparable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

No comparable current price is established here for the Guition or Waveshare examples. When you check a listing, write down the region, seller, date, shipping charge and tax treatment. Budget for the complete installation rather than the bare PCB:

  • The board and any required USB cable.
  • An enclosure, bezel or wall-mount hardware.
  • A reliable nearby power source and cable routing.
  • Shipping, import charges and sales tax.
  • Replacement cost if a listing’s controller revision does not match its advertised firmware.

A very low board price can stop being low after enclosure and mounting work. Conversely, paying more for a larger capacitive panel may be justified if it eliminates page changes and makes the dashboard usable for everyone in the room.

How to verify ESPHome compatibility before flashing

Use this sequence for any board, especially a CYD-family listing:

  1. Photograph and record the hardware. Capture the front, rear and connector layout. Note the printed model, USB arrangement and any controller markings.
  2. Match the display controller. Search the current ESPHome display documentation for the exact controller and integrated-board model. Do not substitute an ILI9341 configuration for an ST7789V or ILI9342 board without confirmed documentation.
  3. Match the touch controller and pins. The common CYD uses an XPT2046 resistive controller, while other boards can use a different touch device. Confirm the touch component, interrupt or chip-select details and orientation settings for your revision.
  4. Start with a display-only configuration. Flash the smallest supported configuration that initializes the screen. Confirm that text and a test color appear in the correct orientation before adding touch actions, sensors or LVGL screens.
  5. Add touch calibration. The CYD Smart Dashboard project notes that calibration may be necessary. Check that taps land on the intended coordinates at each corner and center of the panel.
  6. Enable Home Assistant service calls deliberately. Interactive buttons that invoke scripts or automations need service-call support enabled in the device configuration. Test one harmless action before exposing lighting or security controls.
  7. Add dashboard content in stages. Introduce sensors, pages, brightness logic and action buttons one group at a time. This makes a wrong pin, orientation or service permission easier to isolate.

The exact YAML names and pin assignments depend on the board revision, so copy them only from the matching ESPHome documentation or a project that explicitly identifies the same hardware.

What a practical CYD dashboard can do

The CYD Smart Dashboard for Home Assistant project provides a useful reference architecture. It offers six customizable sensor slots, tap actions for Home Assistant scripts or automations, and automatic brightness based on the onboard light sensor. Those features suggest a focused room workflow:

  • Keep the first page to the readings and controls needed in that room.
  • Use large tap targets for scenes, lights or fans rather than tiny icon-only buttons.
  • Reserve secondary pages for less frequent entities.
  • Let ambient light reduce glare at night, but provide a manual override if the room’s sensor placement makes the reading misleading.
  • Test service permissions with non-critical actions before adding door locks, alarms or other high-consequence controls.

The project is a community example, not a guarantee of identical behavior on every CYD. Display orientation, touch calibration, controller selection and available GPIOs can vary with the hardware revision.

When a larger ESP32 touchscreen is worth it

Choose the 4-inch square panel for balanced density

The Guition ESP32-S3-4848S040 example provides a 4-inch 480 × 480 capacitive display. Its square aspect ratio suits a grid of room cards, climate controls and scene buttons. It is a sensible step up when a 2.8-inch screen forces too many page changes but a wide 4.3-inch layout would not fit the intended location.

Choose the 4.3-inch wide panel for broad layouts

The Waveshare ESP32-S3-Touch-LCD-4.3 example provides a 4.3-inch 800 × 480 capacitive display. The extra horizontal pixels leave room for side-by-side cards, a persistent navigation strip or larger status graphics. Measure the wall or enclosure location first: a wider panel only helps if it can be mounted where people can comfortably view and reach it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Accept the cost and integration trade-off

Neither larger example has a comparable current price in the supplied source material. Expect to evaluate the complete hardware package, controller support, enclosure and mounting rather than selecting on diagonal size alone. A larger panel can still require firmware changes if the seller ships a different display or touch controller revision.

Buying checklist

Use this checklist on the product page before placing an order for a DIY Home Assistant panel:

  • Is the exact model number printed or clearly documented?
  • Does the listing identify the display controller and touch controller?
  • Does the USB connector arrangement match the ESPHome configuration you plan to use?
  • Is the touch type clearly stated as resistive or capacitive?
  • Are the screen dimensions and resolution suitable for the tile layout you have drawn?
  • Are the board, enclosure, cable, shipping and tax costs included in your budget?
  • Can you return the board if the received revision differs from the listing?
  • Do you have a safe, accessible power route at the mounting location?

For a simple shopping search, use the exact phrase ESP32-2432S028R touchscreen board, then confirm the controller details independently. The word CYD alone is too broad to identify a guaranteed pinout.

Common problems and how to avoid them

The screen stays blank after flashing

The most likely first checks are controller selection, display pins, orientation and the board revision. Compare the received controller with the ESPHome model you selected. A CYD configuration written for ILI9341 is not automatically valid for ST7789V or ILI9342 hardware.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The image is rotated or mirrored

Display and touch coordinate systems must agree. Set the documented display orientation, then repeat touch calibration at all four corners. Do not compensate for a rotated image by randomly swapping touch pins; orientation is a software setting tied to the panel and controller.

Taps miss the intended button

Re-run calibration and verify that the touch controller and axis settings match the panel. Increase button size and spacing on the 2.8-inch resistive screen. If the touch layer is physically different from the documented board, obtain the correct configuration for that exact variant rather than forcing offsets indefinitely.

A button appears but does nothing in Home Assistant

Confirm that service calls are enabled and that the selected script or automation can be invoked by the device. Test with a harmless scene, inspect Home Assistant logs, and only then connect actions that affect locks, alarms or other safety-sensitive equipment.

Automatic brightness behaves unexpectedly

The CYD’s onboard light sensor measures the light where the board is installed, not necessarily the light in the whole room. Check its placement, set sensible limits and retain a manual brightness control. Automatic brightness is an implementation demonstrated by the community project, not a calibrated performance specification.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which board should you buy?

Buy the ESP32-2432S028R/CYD when you want the lowest-cost, smallest integrated starting point and your dashboard can be organized around a few large controls and readings. Buy a 4-inch or 4.3-inch capacitive ESP32-S3 panel when fitting more tiles per page, using wider graphics or making fingertip interaction easier is worth the additional hardware and installation cost. In both cases, the decisive step is verifying the exact display and touch controllers before you reuse firmware, pin assignments or a community project.
