Before switching, compare the full terms and check your phone’s compatibility. A Public Mobile price snapshot checked October 7, 2026, offers one concrete example, but the available plans here do not support naming a national winner.
What should you compare before switching phone plans?
Compare the recurring monthly price with the service and conditions included. A low headline price can be a poor fit if the data allowance is too small, coverage is weak where you need it, or the plan’s roaming and balance rules do not suit you.

- Price: Check the regular recurring charge, whether taxes are extra, and whether the advertised price depends on eligibility or a promotion.
- Data and speed: Compare the included amount and the stated network generation or speed conditions. Check what happens when you use the allowance.
- Talk and text: Confirm whether calling and texting are unlimited and where they apply, such as within Canada or beyond it.
- Coverage: Check service at home, work, and along regular travel routes—not just whether a provider describes its service as nationwide.
- Billing and extras: Compare prepaid and postpaid terms, roaming charges, overage treatment, eligibility requirements, and any time-limited offer conditions.
- Phone compatibility: Confirm that your existing phone is supported and unlocked before choosing a bring-your-own-device plan.
Prices and plan terms change. Verify the provider’s current offer, taxes, eligibility, data speed, roaming rules, and promotion expiry directly before signing up.

How much data do you need?
Start with your recent mobile-data use rather than choosing a plan by its largest allowance. Your phone’s settings or your current carrier’s account may show usage by billing period. Compare several recent periods, especially if your routine varies, and consider whether you regularly connect to Wi-Fi at home and work.

- If you mostly use messaging, maps, and occasional browsing away from Wi-Fi, a smaller allowance may be enough.
- If you stream video or music on mobile data, use your phone as a hotspot, or often travel without Wi-Fi, look for a larger allowance and check what happens after you reach it.
- Do not assume that “unlimited” means unlimited high-speed data: read the plan’s speed and post-allowance terms.

Will the plan work where you use your phone?
A provider’s broad coverage claim cannot confirm reliable service at a particular address or on a specific route. Use the carrier’s coverage tool to check the places that matter to you, then consider asking someone who uses that network in those locations about their experience. Coverage maps are useful screening tools, not a guarantee of indoor reception or uninterrupted service.

Prepaid vs. postpaid: which billing style fits?
The CRTC defines prepaid service as service bought before use. Postpaid service is billed all or partly after use and may include overage charges. The distinction affects when you pay and what rules apply if you run out of funds or incur extra usage; the word “prepaid” alone does not tell you every plan’s roaming or data terms.
- Prepaid: Check how and when you must top up, what happens if service expires, and the rules for keeping any remaining balance. The CRTC describes a minimum seven-calendar-day grace period to top up and retain a prepaid balance; applicability depends on the Code and service circumstances.
- Postpaid: Check the billing cycle and the plan’s treatment of data and roaming charges. CRTC protections include rules around consent to extra data and roaming charges, but they do not mean every possible charge is eliminated.
For the applicable rights and definitions, consult the CRTC Wireless Code. It applies to Canadians with mobile plans and addresses topics including understanding a plan, switching providers, bill shock, unlocking, and returning a phone when unhappy with service. Some protections, including a minimum 15-day trial period, apply to eligible contracts; check the Code and your agreement rather than assuming every plan has identical terms.

Can you keep your current phone?
Bring-your-own-device (BYOD) can let you avoid buying another phone if your device is compatible and unlocked. Check both before switching; an unlocked phone is not necessarily compatible with every carrier. Freedom Mobile specifically advises customers to check compatibility and confirm the phone is completely unlocked.

The CRTC says a phone newly purchased from a Canadian provider must be unlocked, and a provider must unlock a locked device at no charge when asked. If your phone is locked, contact the provider that locked it before you move your service. See the Wireless Code’s device protections.

What switching fees are prohibited in Canada?
As of October 7, 2026, CRTC rules prohibiting fees that impede activation, modification, or cancellation of cellphone and internet plans are in effect. They took effect June 12, 2026. The rules do not prohibit every charge: the policy identifies exceptions, including charges for optional products or services that a customer explicitly chooses.
The CRTC’s Telecom Regulatory Policy 2026-43 sets out the rules and exceptions. The Government of Canada summarized the change as making it easier to switch without extra fees just to activate, change, or cancel a plan in its March 12, 2026 announcement.

A practical checklist before you switch
- Review recent data use and decide how much you need, including any mobile hotspot use.
- Compare the recurring price, data amount and speed, calling and texting scope, and the plan’s roaming and overage rules.
- Check coverage for your home, workplace, and regular routes using the provider’s coverage tool.
- Confirm your phone is compatible and unlocked; check whether the plan requires any eligibility or other condition.
- Read the current plan terms, including taxes, promotions and expiry dates, billing rules, and what happens when included service runs out.
- Save the plan details and account information you will need, then confirm the new provider’s activation process and timing before ending service with your current provider.
