Quick answer: which LocalSend alternative should you use?
| What you need | Best fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Automatic folder mirroring | Syncthing | Open-source, continuous synchronization between devices. |
| Peer-to-peer remote sync and large files | Resilio Sync | Proprietary peer-to-peer synchronization with Linux and NAS compatibility. |
| Android plus clipboard, notifications, and remote control | KDE Connect | Combines file movement with broader phone-to-desktop integration. |
| Android to Windows or Chromebook sharing | Quick Share | Integrated into the Android Share menu and convenient for supported desktop combinations. |
| One-time transfers across mixed platforms on a local network | LocalSend | Broad coverage and no third-party server requirement, without continuous folder synchronization. |
The choice becomes easier if you describe the job precisely. “Send these photos to my laptop” is a transfer request. “Keep this photo folder identical on my laptop and desktop” is a synchronization request. The first can be handled by LocalSend, KDE Connect, or Quick Share; the second points to Syncthing or Resilio Sync.

Why LocalSend is not an automatic folder-sync tool
LocalSend describes itself as secure, fast file sharing across your local network. You select photos, videos, documents, or text, choose a nearby device, and accept the transfer. Received files go to the Downloads folder by default, although the destination can be changed in settings.

- [Deep Bass with Clear Vocals] High-performance drivers produce punchy bass while keeping vocals clean and detailed for everyday listening.
That design is deliberately simple, but it is still a manual workflow. LocalSend does not continuously watch a folder and mirror later changes. If a document changes after you sent it, you must send the updated copy again. The same applies when a new file appears in the folder.
The project is open source, cross-platform, and designed as an alternative to AirDrop. It does not require an internet connection or third-party servers. Those qualities make it useful for ad-hoc sharing on a trusted local network, but they do not turn it into a synchronization engine.
When LocalSend is still the right choice
- You need to send a small number of files once rather than maintain a shared directory.
- The devices are together on the same local network.
- You want broad mixed-device coverage, including workflows involving Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and iPhone.
- You do not want to configure device pairing and a persistent folder relationship.
- You want a destination folder that can be changed from the default Downloads location.
A sync engine is not automatically better. For a single nearby send, its persistent relationship can add administration without solving an actual problem. LocalSend’s focused, server-free design is an advantage when continuity is not required.

Syncthing is an open-source file-synchronization tool. Its continuous folder model directly matches a requirement such as “keep my work folder synchronized between my laptop and desktop.” Once the same folder is shared between devices, changes can propagate automatically while the devices are available to each other.
How Syncthing differs from LocalSend
- LocalSend: choose files, choose a recipient, and approve a one-time transfer.
- Syncthing: establish a shared-folder relationship, then let the software keep the directories aligned as files change.
- LocalSend reach: intended for devices on the same local network.
- Syncthing reach: can synchronize between devices remotely when they can reach one another over the internet.
The June 26, 2026 LocalSend–Syncthing comparison summarized the distinction accurately: LocalSend is a manual file-transfer tool, whereas Syncthing is a continuous folder-sync engine that keeps directories mirrored automatically.
A practical Syncthing setup workflow
- Install Syncthing on every device that should participate in the folder relationship.
- Choose the folder to share and decide whether it should be a working folder, a photo folder, or another directory whose changes need to travel between devices.
- Pair the devices using Syncthing’s device-sharing process, then authorize the shared folder on each destination.
- Set the same folder relationship on each endpoint, choosing the local path where each device should store its synchronized copy. The paths do not have to be textually identical; they need to point to the intended local directories.
- Test with a small file before placing a large or irreplaceable collection under synchronization. Confirm that a change made on one device appears on the other.
- Leave the participating devices available when you expect changes to propagate. A device that is shut down or disconnected cannot receive updates until it is reachable again.
The result is a working-folder workflow rather than a sequence of manual sends. You edit or add a file in the shared directory, and Syncthing handles the corresponding synchronization when the participating devices are connected. If a laptop is offline, the update waits until that laptop is available again; remote capability does not remove the need for reachable endpoints.
Requirements to check before deploying Syncthing
- Every intended endpoint needs a Syncthing installation and a local folder with enough storage for its copy.
- Each device must be paired and the folder explicitly authorized on the receiving side.
- The devices need a network path to one another, either on the same network or through a permitted internet connection for remote use.
- Devices that must receive changes automatically need to remain powered and connected during the relevant synchronization window.
- For a valuable collection, test with non-critical files before changing your primary workflow.
These are operational requirements, not a subscription requirement. Syncthing’s attraction is its open-source implementation and documented protocol, rather than a cloud account that stores a master copy.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The major Syncthing limitation: iPhone support
Syncthing’s official FAQ says there are no plans for the current team to officially support iOS in the foreseeable future. Apple’s background-processing restrictions make reliable, always-on integration difficult. If an iPhone must participate in the automatic folder, treat this as a decisive constraint and investigate third-party iOS clients separately rather than assuming official support exists.
For Windows, macOS, Linux, and other desktop-oriented combinations, Syncthing is the strongest fit in this group when an open implementation and automatic mirroring matter more than built-in phone integration. Do not assume that a third-party iOS client offers the same background behavior as a desktop installation; verify its exact operation before depending on it.

Why the open protocol matters
Syncthing’s official documentation says it uses an open and documented protocol, with security mechanisms that are defined and visible in the source code. That transparency is a meaningful advantage for readers who need to understand how synchronization works or who prefer software they can inspect.
This is a decision criterion, not a claim that every closed product is unsafe. It means that Syncthing and Resilio Sync differ in how much of their synchronization and security design is available for independent examination.

Resilio Sync: proprietary peer-to-peer synchronization
Resilio Sync is the main proprietary alternative when you want continuous peer-to-peer synchronization rather than a manual send. A December 8, 2025 TechRadar review describes it as non-cloud, peer-to-peer software suited to large files and compatible with Linux and NAS platforms, including Synology systems. The review also describes a free product for non-commercial use and a separate Resilio Active Everywhere business platform.
When Resilio Sync makes sense
- Large collections: a peer-to-peer model can be attractive when you want devices to exchange data directly rather than stage it through a cloud service.
- Remote synchronization: it is designed for device-to-device synchronization beyond a single local network when the endpoints can connect.
- NAS deployments: Linux and NAS compatibility makes it a candidate for keeping an always-on storage endpoint synchronized with computers.
- Commercial environments: the separate business platform is relevant when a non-commercial free product does not fit the use case.
Licensing and cost questions
The TechRadar review reports a free Resilio Sync product for non-commercial use, alongside the separate Resilio Active Everywhere business platform. That makes the intended use important when estimating cost: a personal, non-commercial setup and a business deployment should not be treated as the same offering. Confirm current program availability and terms before committing to a production workflow.
The trade-off versus Syncthing
Syncthing’s FAQ contrasts its open, documented protocol with Resilio Sync’s closed, undocumented protocol. That does not by itself establish that one product is insecure, but it does mean that the protocol and security design are less transparent to outside inspection. For privacy-conscious or security-focused users, protocol visibility should be part of the decision rather than an afterthought.
Choose Resilio Sync when its peer-to-peer behavior, large-file workflow, remote use, or NAS compatibility outweighs the value of an open protocol. Choose Syncthing when inspectability and open documentation are more important. Neither choice removes the need to plan storage, endpoint availability, and the folders that should actually be shared.
KDE Connect: the file-transfer choice for Android integration
KDE Connect also moves files without a cable, but its value is broader than file movement. It can share a clipboard between phone and computer, show phone notifications on the computer, and provide remote-control functions.
That makes KDE Connect a better LocalSend alternative for an Android user who wants a phone-to-desktop control layer. It is not the first choice for a continuously mirrored work folder: its strength is interactive integration, while Syncthing and Resilio Sync are the options built around ongoing folder synchronization.
Choose KDE Connect when these features matter
- You regularly copy text between an Android phone and a desktop.
- You want phone notifications visible on the computer.
- You need remote-control functions in addition to occasional file transfers.
- You prefer one integration tool instead of a file-only utility.
KDE Connect therefore answers a different question from Syncthing. If your frustration is switching between a phone and a desktop, clipboard and notification integration may matter more than directory mirroring. If your frustration is repeatedly resending changed files, KDE Connect does not address the underlying continuous-sync requirement.

Quick Share: the convenient Android-to-Windows or Chromebook option
Quick Share is convenient for Android users who send files to a Windows PC or Chromebook. Its key advantage is placement in the Android Share menu, so sharing starts from the same interface used for other Android sharing targets.
Quick Share is best understood as a streamlined transfer workflow, not a replacement for an automatic folder mirror. If the requirement is “send this photo or document now,” it can be faster than opening a separate transfer app. If the requirement is “keep this directory identical on two machines,” use a synchronization tool instead.
Its strongest case is a specific device combination: Android on one side and Windows or ChromeOS on the other. For a household mixing Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and iPhone, LocalSend remains the broader manual-transfer option described by the September 28, 2026 comparison.
LocalSend versus the alternatives: the decision criteria
1. One-time transfer or continuous mirroring?
This is the first and most important question. LocalSend, KDE Connect, and Quick Share are primarily manual transfer tools. Syncthing and Resilio Sync maintain a continuing synchronization relationship. Do not select a manual sender when the real requirement is unattended folder maintenance.
2. Local network or remote connection?
LocalSend is designed for secure sharing across a local network and does not require an internet connection. Syncthing and Resilio Sync are the relevant choices when devices need to synchronize remotely and can reach one another over the internet. A remote workflow still depends on the devices being powered on, connected, and permitted to communicate.
3. Open protocol or proprietary protocol?
Syncthing uses an open, documented protocol. Resilio Sync uses a closed protocol. This distinction affects how much of the synchronization and security design can be independently examined.
4. Phone integration or folder automation?
KDE Connect adds clipboard sharing, notifications, and remote control. Quick Share emphasizes convenience from Android’s Share menu. Syncthing and Resilio Sync emphasize automatic directory synchronization. Pick according to the job, not simply the number of platforms listed on a product page.
5. Does an iPhone need to participate?
LocalSend is presented as a broad mixed-device option that includes iPhone workflows. Syncthing’s official team does not plan official iOS support in the foreseeable future. That makes LocalSend or another iOS-capable transfer workflow more practical for occasional iPhone sharing, while automatic iPhone folder mirroring requires separate verification of a third-party client.
6. Is a cloud account required?
LocalSend’s project description says it does not require an internet connection or third-party servers. Resilio Sync is described as non-cloud peer-to-peer software. Syncthing is likewise a direct synchronization tool rather than a cloud-storage service. In every case, “no cloud” does not mean “no connectivity requirement”: remote peers still need a route to one another, and local peers still need to be on a network that permits communication.

Recommended setups by scenario
| Scenario | Recommended approach | Reasoning |
|---|---|---|
| Windows laptop and desktop should share a working folder automatically | Syncthing | Continuous folder synchronization is the core requirement. |
| Linux workstation and an always-on NAS should exchange large files | Resilio Sync or Syncthing | Resilio Sync offers proprietary peer-to-peer synchronization and NAS compatibility; Syncthing offers an open protocol. |
| Android phone and desktop need clipboard and notification sharing | KDE Connect | It adds device-control features beyond file transfer. |
| Android phone sending a file to a Windows PC or Chromebook | Quick Share | It is integrated into the Android Share menu for that combination. |
| iPhone sending photos to different computers on the same network | LocalSend | It is designed for broad mixed-device local-network sharing and does not require third-party servers. |
| Occasional nearby transfer with no synchronization requirement | LocalSend | The manual model avoids the setup and ongoing operation of a sync engine. |
| Remote folder synchronization without choosing a cloud storage provider | Syncthing or Resilio Sync | Both are continuous synchronization choices; select between open documentation and Resilio’s proprietary peer-to-peer workflow. |
Using a NAS as an automatic-sync endpoint
A NAS is optional. It can serve as an always-on endpoint so a computer does not need to remain powered on for every synchronization window, but buying a NAS is not a prerequisite for Syncthing or Resilio Sync.
Choose NAS hardware only after considering storage capacity, the operating system’s compatibility with the synchronization software, and the workload. A photo archive, a large media collection, and a small document folder place different demands on storage. The available evidence identifies NAS compatibility as a selection axis but does not establish one universal model for every reader.
For a NAS plan, first identify which devices will write to it, whether it must remain available continuously, and how much local capacity each synchronized copy needs. Then confirm that the NAS operating system supports the selected synchronization software. A NAS is an endpoint choice, not a substitute for deciding whether the folder should be manually transferred or continuously mirrored.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Expecting LocalSend to update old transfers
A file sent through LocalSend is not a live link to the original folder. Send the changed file again, or move the folder to Syncthing or Resilio Sync if updates must propagate automatically.
Recommended Free Tools
Assuming “remote” means “always available”
Peer-to-peer synchronization still requires reachable endpoints. A sleeping laptop, disconnected phone, or unavailable NAS will synchronize only after it returns to the connection.
Choosing Syncthing for an iPhone without checking client support
Official iOS support is not planned in the foreseeable future. Confirm the exact iPhone workflow before reorganizing a device’s primary files around Syncthing.
Ignoring protocol transparency
If the ability to inspect and understand the protocol is part of your security requirements, Syncthing’s documented, open protocol is materially different from Resilio Sync’s closed protocol.
Using a sync engine for a one-off transfer
Synchronization software introduces a persistent folder relationship. For a single nearby send, LocalSend, KDE Connect, or Quick Share can be simpler and require less ongoing administration.
Failing to test a real folder path
Do not begin with an irreplaceable archive. Pair the devices, authorize a test folder, change a small file, and verify that the destination receives the change. This confirms the intended local paths and network reachability before you rely on the setup for daily work.
Best Value
Confusing platform breadth with background synchronization
An app can support many platforms and still be a manual sender. Check whether the product watches and mirrors directories or simply offers a convenient “send” action. That single distinction explains why LocalSend, KDE Connect, and Quick Share complement rather than replace Syncthing or Resilio Sync.
FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best LocalSend alternative for automatic folder sync?
Syncthing is the clearest choice. It is an open-source synchronization tool built around shared folders that continue to mirror changes between available devices.
