There is no evidence-backed universal winner for recommending games from a Steam library. The most practical shortlist is Qwen3 and Gemma 3 variants that you can run through Ollama, plus compatible models available in LM Studio. Choose a model by the memory your computer can spare, whether you need offline and private processing, how well it explains recommendations for your own examples, and how much work you are willing to do to prepare your library data.
Neither LM Studio nor Ollama should be assumed to connect automatically to Steam. A local model can recommend games you own once you provide a usable list and your preferences, but the quality depends on that input and on your chosen model variant. Treat the options below as candidates to test, not as a benchmarked ranking.

What a local LLM can—and cannot—do for Steam recommendations
A local large language model (LLM) runs on your own computer instead of sending each prompt to a hosted AI service. For a game-recommendation task, the model needs two kinds of information:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Your library: game titles and, ideally, genres, tags, descriptions, playtime, completion status, or other notes.
- Your taste: preferred genres, pacing, difficulty, multiplayer habits, accessibility needs, games you loved, and games you disliked.
The model compares those inputs, explains the match, identifies reasons a recommendation may fail, and suggests alternatives from the supplied list. It does not automatically know which games you own, your current backlog, or your personal play history. It also cannot verify current prices, patches, player counts, or hardware requirements unless you provide current data and a connected tool.

The available evidence does not establish a task-specific accuracy benchmark for game recommendations. A larger parameter count or context window is therefore not proof that a model will make better picks for you.
Shortlist: Qwen3, Gemma 3, and models in LM Studio
| Candidate | Catalog specifications | Useful when | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Qwen3 via Ollama | Variants from 0.6B to 235B parameters. The qwen3:8b listing shows 5.2 GB and a 40K context window; qwen3:14b shows 9.3 GB and 40K context. | You want several size choices and a straightforward model catalog. | File sizes and catalog values can change. These specifications do not measure recommendation quality. |
| Gemma 3 via Ollama | 4B (3.4 GB), 12B (8.2 GB), and 27B (17 GB) multimodal variants, each listed with a 128K context window. | You need a long context window or want to test multimodal-capable variants. | The catalog describes question answering, summarization, and reasoning; it does not demonstrate game-picking performance. |
| Models supported by LM Studio | LM Studio supports models such as Qwen, Mistral, Gemma, and gpt-oss. Its inventory exposes type, format, parameter count, file size, architecture, tool-use metadata, and context length. | You prefer an app-oriented workflow for downloading, loading, and chatting with local models. | Support for a model family does not guarantee that every model file or quantization will run well on your computer. |
Start with one model that fits your machine, then compare a second candidate using the same library sample and prompts. This produces a useful personal comparison without pretending that a catalog specification is a quality score.
How to choose a model size
Use file size as a first screening test
When a local model loads, its weights and other runtime parameters occupy computer memory. The model file size is a practical warning about the amount of storage and memory involved, but it is not a complete RAM requirement. Runtime overhead, the context you load, the operating system, and other applications all consume resources.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →For orientation, the listed Qwen3 examples are 5.2 GB for 8B and 9.3 GB for 14B. Gemma 3 examples are 3.4 GB for 4B, 8.2 GB for 12B, and 17 GB for 27B. Keep free memory beyond the displayed file size; otherwise the system may swap, slow dramatically, or fail to load the model.
Do not buy hardware from a single catalog number
No universal minimum RAM amount, ideal GPU, or preferred quantization has been established for this task. Check the exact model file, format, and runtime requirements against your computer before purchasing memory or another component. If a model barely fits, a smaller variant that responds consistently is usually more useful than a larger one that constantly slows or crashes.
Interpret parameters and context correctly
Parameter count describes model scale, not a guaranteed recommendation score. Context length describes how much text the model can accept in one conversation; it does not mean the model will remember every entry equally well or reason accurately over a very long list. A concise, well-structured library can outperform a huge unfiltered dump because the model has less irrelevant text to process.

Privacy and offline operation
LM Studio’s offline documentation says, “LM Studio can operate entirely offline, just make sure to get some model files first.” It also states that chat input remains on the device. After model files are present, its core local functions—chatting with models, chatting with documents or retrieval-augmented data, and running a local server—can work without an internet connection.

There is an important distinction between using a downloaded model and obtaining one. Searching LM Studio’s model catalog and downloading model files require connectivity. Plan the download on a trusted network, then disconnect or block external access if offline behavior is part of your threat model.
Ollama’s local workflow likewise depends on obtaining model files before you can run them. Do not infer that either runtime has authenticated access to Steam. Keep your account credentials, session cookies, and personal identifiers out of prompts unless you have independently verified the data path and accept the risk.
Prepare library data without assuming a Steam integration
A current, authoritative Steam export or import workflow was not established here, and Valve’s Web API documentation was not available for verification. Do not rely on an undocumented endpoint, scraper, or third-party importer as though it were an official, privacy-preserving feature. The safe, transparent approach is to provide the model with data you intentionally collect.
Make a compact recommendation dataset
For each game, create one row or bullet containing as many of these fields as you can verify:
- Title and edition, such as standard or definitive.
- Genres or store tags.
- One-sentence description.
- Your playtime or whether you finished it.
- Your rating and a short reason for that rating.
- Modes you care about: solo, local co-op, online co-op, or competitive.
- Content or accessibility notes that affect your choice.
Remove duplicates, DLC entries you do not consider games, and titles you cannot actually play. Keep the source list in a local file that you can audit. A plain text, CSV, or Markdown document is sufficient; the model does not require a special database for this use.

Separate facts from preferences
Label objective information and personal judgments separately. For example:
Title: Example Quest
Tags: turn-based, tactical, fantasy
My playtime: 42 hours
My rating: 9/10
Why: I enjoy planning turns and character builds; I dislike timed combat.
This structure gives the model evidence for its explanation instead of asking it to guess from a title alone.
Workflow A: using LM Studio
- Install the current LM Studio release for your operating system. Confirm that your machine has enough free storage and memory for the specific model file you intend to load.
- Download a model while online. Use the model catalog to inspect model type, format, parameter count, file size, architecture, tool-use metadata, and context length. Make sure you select an LLM rather than an embedding model; the inventory documentation distinguishes those types.
- Load the model in the chat interface. Start with a context size that leaves memory headroom. If loading fails or generation becomes unusably slow, close other applications or select a smaller variant.
- Attach or paste your prepared library file. If you use document chat or retrieval features, verify that the intended file is indexed and that the model can quote the relevant entries.
- Set a decision prompt. Ask for a ranked shortlist, evidence from your data, caveats, and alternatives. Require the model to say when the library lacks enough information.
- Repeat the same test prompts. Save outputs from two or more models so you can compare explanations rather than relying on a memorable single answer.
- Disconnect for an offline check. With model files already downloaded, test chatting and document retrieval without network access if privacy is a requirement.
LM Studio can also run a local server. Treat that as a local application interface, not as proof of Steam connectivity; any library ingestion still needs a file or process you control.

Workflow B: using Ollama
- Install Ollama and obtain a candidate model. The catalog lists Qwen3 and Gemma 3 tags with their current sizes and context windows. Select a tag that fits your available resources.
- Run the model locally. For example, a Qwen3 tag can be launched with the Ollama command-line workflow using the exact tag shown in the catalog, such as
qwen3:8b. Catalog tags and sizes may change, so confirm the current listing before downloading. - Provide the library as prompt context or through your own local application. Keep the data format consistent between tests. A local API can support a custom interface, but do not treat it as an official Steam import mechanism.
- Use a fixed evaluation prompt. Ask the model to cite the supplied title and preference that drove every recommendation, list one mismatch risk, and name two alternatives only when they appear in the provided library.
- Record resource behavior. Note load time, generation speed, memory pressure, and whether the model truncates your library. These observations are specific to your computer and should not be generalized as benchmark results.
A prompt that produces auditable recommendations
Use a clear role, constraints, and output format. The following template keeps the model grounded in your own collection:
You are recommending games only from the library below.
My current preferences: [describe genres, pacing, difficulty, modes, accessibility needs, and dislikes].
For each recommendation, provide:
1. Title exactly as listed.
2. Three pieces of evidence from the library or my preferences.
3. One reason it may not suit me.
4. A confidence label: high, medium, or low, with a short explanation.
Do not invent games, tags, features, or ownership. If the data is insufficient, ask one clarifying question.
Library:
[paste or attach your structured list]
For a backlog-first result, add a constraint such as “prefer games I have not started.” For a short-session result, specify a maximum session length and ask the model to identify where that information is missing rather than guessing.
How to compare recommendation usefulness
Run an identical test set against each candidate. Use examples that expose different failure modes:

- A favorite game and the exact qualities you liked.
- A game you disliked and the reason it failed.
- A request for a narrow mood, such as a short solo strategy session.
- A request that requires excluding a mode, mechanic, or content type.
- A request for three alternatives from your own library only.
Score each output on a simple 0–2 scale for the following dimensions:
| Dimension | 0 points | 1 point | 2 points |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grounding | Invents titles or unsupported features. | Uses some supplied facts but leaves key claims unclear. | Consistently ties picks to supplied entries. |
| Preference fit | Ignores stated likes or dislikes. | Recognizes broad genre fit but misses important constraints. | Addresses the specific reasons you gave. |
| Explanation | Provides a list with no reasoning. | Gives generic reasons. | Explains both the match and the likely mismatch. |
| Uncertainty | States guesses as facts. | Uses vague caveats. | Clearly identifies missing data and asks useful questions. |
| Actionability | Recommendations are impractical or duplicated. | Some picks are usable. | Produces a manageable shortlist and sensible next step. |
Keep the prompts, library sample, model settings, and scoring notes together. A model may appear better simply because it received cleaner context or a more favorable example.

The model recommends games you do not own
Require “library only” output and provide a uniquely identifiable title list. Ask the model to return “not in supplied data” when it cannot verify ownership. This is a data-grounding problem, not evidence that a larger model is required.
The context is truncated
Reduce the library to relevant genres, remove repeated descriptions, or use document retrieval. Increasing context length can raise memory use, and a larger advertised window does not guarantee better attention to every entry.
Recommendations are generic
Add concrete examples of games you loved and disliked, explain why, and request evidence for each pick. Replace “I like RPGs” with constraints such as “I prefer turn-based combat, dislike grinding, and usually play 30-minute sessions.”
Loading is slow or fails
Check the exact file size, format, and available memory. Close other applications, lower the context setting, or choose a smaller variant. Do not purchase RAM based solely on a catalog number; verify compatibility with your operating system and runtime first.

Offline expectations are wrong
Download model files before disconnecting. Model chat and local document features can operate offline in LM Studio after files are present, but catalog search and downloads need connectivity. A local runtime does not make external Steam data automatically available.
The model confuses an embedding model with a chat model
In LM Studio’s inventory, check the model type before loading. An embedding model is used to represent text for retrieval; it is not a conversational LLM that will produce a ranked recommendation list by itself.
Which option fits your situation?
| Your priority | Starting point | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Smallest practical experiment | A smaller Qwen3 or Gemma 3 variant that fits comfortably. | Lower resource pressure makes it easier to establish a repeatable workflow. |
| Choice of many parameter sizes | Qwen3 through Ollama. | The catalog spans 0.6B to 235B, allowing you to test several scales. |
| Long advertised context | Gemma 3 variants. | The listed 4B, 12B, and 27B variants each show a 128K context window. |
| Visual model-management interface | LM Studio. | Its app exposes model metadata and supports local chat, document chat, and a local server. |
| Strict offline operation after setup | Either runtime, with LM Studio’s offline behavior explicitly documented. | Download files first, then verify the workflow with network access disabled. |
This table describes workflow fit, not recommendation superiority. The right choice is the candidate that produces grounded, useful explanations on your library while remaining responsive on your hardware.
What is still unknown
No authoritative, current Steam-library export or import procedure has been established for this comparison. Do not claim that either runtime authenticates to Steam, reads your account automatically, or preserves Steam privacy by default. If you later adopt a connector or script, inspect its permissions, source, storage behavior, and maintenance status before giving it account access.
Catalog values are also volatile. Recheck model tags, file sizes, context windows, supported formats, and runtime documentation immediately before downloading. The figures in this guide describe the listed examples, not permanent specifications.
Bottom line
For a best local LLM for Steam game recommendations, begin with a comfortably fitting Qwen3 or Gemma 3 variant in Ollama, or use LM Studio if you prefer its model inventory and app-based workflow. Supply a clean, local library file and explicit preference examples, then compare identical prompts for grounding, fit, explanations, uncertainty, and practical usefulness. No available evidence justifies declaring one family the universal winner, and neither tool should be treated as an automatic Steam integration.
