For most laptops, start with a 7B–13B instruct model in a 4-bit quantization and 16GB of system RAM. Choose LM Studio if you want the simplest graphical download, load, and chat workflow; choose Ollama if you prefer a command line, model library, or REST API; choose GPT4All if asking questions about local documents is central to your workflow. An 8GB laptop can run very small models, but 32GB gives you more room for larger models, longer context, and other applications.
Local inference keeps prompts and responses on your computer once the model files are present. It also makes you responsible for storage, memory, heat, speed, model licenses, and updates. The best choice is therefore a combination of model size, quantization, runtime, and laptop hardware—not a single universally best model.

Quick answer: which local LLM should you use?
| Your priority | Best starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Easiest setup with a graphical interface | LM Studio | Search, download, load, and chat from one desktop application. |
| Terminal commands, automation, or an API | Ollama | Provides a command-line workflow, model library, and REST API. |
| Questions about files on your laptop | GPT4All | Its desktop app includes LocalDocs for indexing and querying local material. |
| Only 8GB of RAM | A 1B–4B quantized instruct model | Small weights leave enough memory for the operating system, context, and application overhead. |
| 16GB of RAM | A 7B–13B quantized instruct model | This is the most practical general-purpose tier for everyday laptop use. |
| 32GB of RAM | A larger 20B–33B experiment, or a 7B–13B model with long context | More memory permits larger weights and multitasking, subject to GPU and thermal limits. |
These are starting recommendations, not guarantees of speed or answer quality. A model with fewer parameters can be more useful than a larger one if its instruction tuning, quantization, and task fit are better.
What a local LLM does on a laptop
A local large language model (LLM) is downloaded to your computer and generates text using the laptop’s CPU, integrated graphics, or discrete GPU. The runtime loads the model’s weights and supporting parameters into memory, then evaluates each prompt locally. LM Studio describes loading a model as allocating memory for its weights and other parameters in your computer’s RAM.

The first download normally needs an internet connection. After the model files are available, the generation step can work without internet access. GPT4All states that its downloaded models run on the user’s hardware and locally and privately. LM Studio documents offline operation after model files are available. Offline operation does not make every workflow private: if you install extensions, connect an external API, synchronize files, or use an online search feature, those components can still transmit data.
Why model size matters more than the marketing name
Parameter count is a rough indicator of a model’s capacity. A 1B model has about one billion parameters, while a 13B model has about thirteen billion. More parameters can improve instruction following and difficult reasoning, but they require more memory and usually run more slowly. The model’s training, instruction tuning, context length, and quantization also affect practical results.
Use an instruct or chat-tuned variant for questions and conversation. A base model is trained to continue text and may not follow commands or answer in a helpful format. Keep the model’s intended license and usage restrictions in mind; licenses differ by model and must be checked individually.

RAM, VRAM, and storage: the limits that decide your choice
RAM guidance by model size
Ollama’s current quickstart guidance says to have at least 8GB of RAM available for 7B models, 16GB for 13B models, and 32GB for 33B models. “Available” matters: your operating system, browser, runtime, context buffer, and other applications consume memory before generation begins. A laptop advertised with 8GB may have considerably less free memory.
LM Studio recommends 16GB or more on supported macOS systems. On Windows, its current requirements recommend at least 16GB of RAM and 4GB of dedicated VRAM. These figures are starting points rather than a promise that every model will fit comfortably.
| Laptop memory | Practical model range | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| 8GB RAM | 1B–4B quantized models; some 7B models with compromises | Use a modest context size, close other applications, and expect slower CPU-only performance. A 7B model may load only if the runtime and quantization leave enough headroom. |
| 16GB RAM | 7B–13B quantized models | The best general starting tier. You can chat, summarize, and draft while keeping a reasonable amount of memory for the operating system. |
| 32GB RAM | 13B comfortably; selected 20B–33B quantized models | Better for longer prompts, document work, and multitasking. Thermal throttling or limited graphics memory can still reduce speed. |
| More than 32GB RAM | Large local experiments | Model files and memory requirements rise rapidly; verify the exact runtime estimate before downloading. |
VRAM and shared memory
A discrete GPU can accelerate generation, but dedicated VRAM is a separate ceiling from system RAM. When a model does not fit in VRAM, a runtime may place some or all layers in system memory, often reducing speed. Integrated graphics usually share system memory, so the amount shown as installed RAM is not all available to the model. Check your runtime’s hardware estimate and leave room for the display, drivers, and other applications.
Storage requirements
Model weights are ordinary files stored on your drive. Official examples show how wide the range is: the Llama 3 Instruct example listed by Nomic AI/GPT4All is 4.66GB and has an 8GB RAM requirement, while GPT4All Snoozy is 7.37GB and lists 16GB RAM. Ollama’s examples range from Llama 3.2 1B at 1.3GB to Llama 3.1 405B at 231GB.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Keep extra space for multiple quantizations, temporary downloads, indexes, and the operating system. An external SSD can hold a model library, but moving a model to slower external storage may increase load times. Do not confuse file size with total runtime memory: context buffers and other parameters add to the RAM requirement.
Quantization: the practical quality-versus-memory trade-off
Quantization stores model weights with fewer bits. A 4-bit version is smaller and generally faster or easier to fit than a 16-bit version, at the cost of some quality. GPT4All explains that smaller quantizations such as 4-bit are faster and less memory intensive, with slightly worse performance than 16-bit.

For a laptop, 4-bit is a sensible first choice when a model offers several quantizations. Move to a higher-bit version if you have ample RAM and need the best answer quality, or move to a smaller model if the higher-bit file causes swapping. Swapping to disk can make an otherwise usable model feel frozen.
- Choose 4-bit when memory is tight or you want a responsive 7B–13B model.
- Choose a higher-bit file when you have substantial headroom and accuracy is more important than speed.
- Keep the same model family when testing so you can tell whether a change in quantization, rather than a different training set, caused a quality difference.
LM Studio: best for a visual, low-friction workflow
LM Studio is the easiest option for someone who does not want to manage a terminal. Its desktop workflow lets you find a model, download it, load it into memory, and chat through a graphical interface. It is a good first runtime for writing, brainstorming, summarizing, and trying several quantized models without learning commands.
Hardware and operating-system notes
LM Studio documents support for Apple Silicon M1, M2, M3, and M4 Macs and recommends 16GB or more of RAM on macOS. Its current Windows requirements recommend at least 16GB of RAM and 4GB of dedicated VRAM. On any supported system, check the model’s estimated memory before downloading.
Basic LM Studio procedure
- Install the current desktop application for your operating system.
- Open the model search or catalog and choose an instruct model whose file size and estimated memory fit your laptop.
- Download one quantized file rather than several variants at once; keep free disk space for temporary files.
- Load the model and wait for the runtime to allocate memory. If loading fails, close other applications or select a smaller quantization.
- Start a new chat, set a conservative context length, and test with a question you can evaluate.
- For offline use, disconnect from the internet only after the model has downloaded and loaded successfully.
When LM Studio is the right choice
- You want visible controls instead of shell commands.
- You are comparing model files interactively.
- You need a local chat window and do not require a programmatic API.
If you need automation, scheduled prompts, or integration with your own software, Ollama’s API-oriented workflow is usually a better fit.
Ollama: best for command-line and API users
Ollama provides a command-line interface, a model library, and a REST API. It suits developers, power users, and anyone who wants to call a local model from scripts or another application. The same runtime can serve interactive terminal sessions and programmatic requests.
RAM guidance and model range
Ollama’s current quickstart documentation recommends at least 8GB of RAM for 7B models, 16GB for 13B, and 32GB for 33B. Its examples illustrate why you should check each model: Llama 3.2 1B is listed at 1.3GB, while Llama 3.1 405B is listed at 231GB. The latter is far beyond a normal laptop, even before accounting for context and operating-system memory.
Recommended Free Tools
Basic Ollama procedure
- Install the current Ollama release for your operating system and confirm that your CPU, GPU, and drivers are supported.
- Choose an instruct model from the model library that fits your RAM and storage budget.
- Use the model’s documented command to download it, then start an interactive chat from the terminal.
- Send a short test prompt and watch memory use. If the system begins swapping, stop the session and select a smaller or more aggressively quantized model.
- For an application, call the local REST API and keep prompts within the context and memory limits shown by the model documentation.
When Ollama is the right choice
- You want reproducible commands that can be placed in scripts.
- You need a local endpoint for an editor, utility, or prototype.
- You are comfortable checking logs, processes, and driver compatibility.
A command-line runtime does not automatically improve answer quality. It changes how you install, operate, and integrate the model.
GPT4All: best for local documents and a desktop app
GPT4All combines a desktop chat application with LocalDocs, a feature for working with files stored on your computer. GPT4All states that it is optimized for LLMs in the 3–13B parameter range on consumer-grade hardware and that downloaded models run locally and privately.
Model and memory examples
Nomic AI/GPT4All lists Llama 3 Instruct at 4.66GB with an 8GB RAM requirement. Its GPT4All Snoozy example is 7.37GB with a 16GB RAM requirement. Treat these as documented examples, not universal requirements for every model or quantization.

Choosing a model for common laptop questions
Everyday factual questions and explanations
Start with a 7B or 8B instruct model in a 4-bit quantization on a 16GB laptop. Ask it to state uncertainty and provide the assumptions behind calculations. Local models can produce outdated or incorrect facts because their knowledge depends on their training data; offline generation has no built-in way to check current events.
Writing, rewriting, and brainstorming
A 7B–13B instruct model is usually a practical balance. Give it a clear role, the desired length, and examples of the tone you want. Keep the context focused: every pasted page consumes memory and can crowd out the response.
Coding help
Use a model explicitly tuned for code if your runtime catalog offers one, and test generated code before running it. A local model can explain an error or draft a function without sending source code to a remote service, but it may miss library changes or security issues. Ask for a minimal patch and an explanation of assumptions.
Questions about private documents
GPT4All with LocalDocs is the most direct desktop option among these three. On an 8GB laptop, prefer smaller models and smaller document collections. On 16GB or 32GB, you can allocate more memory to the model while retaining room for indexing and the operating system.
Step-by-step setup checklist for a reliable first run
- Check hardware. Record installed RAM, free storage, CPU architecture, available VRAM, and whether the laptop has a discrete GPU.
- Choose the runtime by workflow. Pick LM Studio for graphical simplicity, Ollama for terminal/API work, or GPT4All for LocalDocs.
- Reserve storage. Keep at least the model file size plus additional free space for downloads, indexes, and temporary data.
- Pick one small instruct model. On 8GB, begin at 1B–4B; on 16GB, begin at 7B–13B; on 32GB, consider a larger model only after a smaller one works.
- Select quantization. Use 4-bit when you need to conserve memory; test a higher-bit variant only when you have headroom.
- Close memory-heavy applications. Browsers with many tabs, virtual machines, and creative software can prevent loading.
- Load and test. Ask a short question first. Confirm that the model responds, memory remains stable, and the laptop does not become unresponsive.
- Increase context gradually. Longer prompts consume additional memory. Stop increasing it when generation slows sharply or the system starts swapping.
- Test offline mode. Disconnect after installation and ask a question that does not require current web data.
- Record the working configuration. Note the runtime, model name, quantization, context setting, and operating system so you can reproduce it.
Performance, heat, and battery expectations
CPU-only generation is normally slower than GPU-accelerated generation. Even when a model fits, a thin laptop may reduce clock speeds as it heats up. Run demanding sessions while plugged in, keep vents clear, and compare performance after several minutes rather than judging the first few generated tokens.
Use shorter answers and focused prompts when you need responsiveness. Closing background applications can help more than changing runtimes. If the laptop becomes hot or the fan remains at maximum speed, reduce model size or context, pause between requests, and check whether the runtime is using the intended graphics hardware.
Privacy and security when running locally
Local inference reduces the need to upload prompts and documents, but privacy depends on the whole setup. Download models only from the runtime’s established catalog or a source you trust. Review model licenses, keep the runtime updated, and avoid running untrusted code supplied by a model.
- Do not paste passwords, recovery keys, or credentials into a chat merely because it is local.
- Restrict document collections to files that the task actually needs.
- Check whether an extension, plugin, telemetry option, or external API is enabled.
- Protect model files and indexed document databases with the same account and disk security used for other private data.
- Remember that offline answers cannot verify a newly changed policy, price, vulnerability, or event.
Common problems and fixes
The model will not load
Confirm that free RAM exceeds the runtime estimate, close other applications, and try a smaller quantization or model. A file that fits on disk can still exceed available memory once context and overhead are included.

The laptop becomes unusably slow
Stop the generation, reduce context, select a smaller model, and check for memory swapping. On an 8GB system, a 1B–4B model is a more realistic starting point than a 13B model.
Responses are vague or ignore instructions
Verify that you downloaded an instruct or chat variant rather than a base model. Give one task at a time, specify the output format, and provide the relevant context without unrelated text.
Answers about documents are incorrect
Check that LocalDocs finished indexing the intended files, ask the model to identify the supporting passage, and compare the response with the original. Retrieval can supply context but cannot eliminate model mistakes.
Offline mode does not work
Make sure the model completed its download and can load before disconnecting. Remove prompts that require current web information, and inspect runtime settings for an enabled external provider or integration.
A model appears to need more storage than expected
Look for duplicate quantizations, partial downloads, and cached copies. Keep one tested file, move inactive models to an external SSD, and retain enough internal space for the operating system.
Decision guide by laptop tier
If you have 8GB RAM
Choose LM Studio or GPT4All for a simple desktop experience, or Ollama if you are comfortable with commands. Begin with a 1B–4B quantized instruct model, use a modest context, and close other applications. Expect slower CPU-only performance and avoid assuming that every 7B model will fit.
If you have 16GB RAM
This is the sensible baseline for local LLM use. A 7B–13B quantized instruct model should be your first test. LM Studio’s macOS guidance starts at 16GB, and its Windows guidance also calls for 16GB RAM plus 4GB dedicated VRAM. Choose GPT4All when local files are central, and Ollama when you need an API.
If you have 32GB RAM
You have room for longer prompts, document work, and selected 20B–33B experiments. Start with a 7B–13B model anyway so you can establish a responsive baseline, then move up if the laptop’s GPU, cooling, and storage support it. Ollama’s guidance places 33B models at 32GB RAM, but that does not guarantee comfortable speed on every laptop.

LM Studio documents M1, M2, M3, and M4 support and recommends 16GB or more of RAM on macOS. Unified memory is shared by the system and graphics, so leave headroom rather than treating all installed memory as available to the model.
If you use Windows or Linux
Check CPU instruction support, GPU model and VRAM, and driver compatibility before downloading a large file. A runtime’s operating-system support and acceleration path can change with releases, so use its current requirements rather than an old forum post.
What “best” means for a local laptop LLM
The best local LLM is the largest model that leaves your laptop responsive for the task you actually perform. For many readers, that means a 7B–13B quantized instruct model on 16GB RAM, not a headline model that consumes the entire machine. LM Studio is the strongest default for a first graphical installation, Ollama is the strongest default for command-line and API work, and GPT4All is the strongest default when local documents are the main reason to run an LLM locally. Test one model, record its memory and speed, and change only one variable at a time when comparing alternatives.
