Modern Warfare 4’s announced mode uses alternating attack and defense rounds, a two-bomb-site objective, pistol starts, and a between-round shop. Because the announcement does not publish prices, weapon statistics, purchase limits, or tested round rules, the strongest approach before launch is to build around a role, preserve your life, and spend only when the purchase clearly improves the next round.
Collateral is scheduled to launch with Modern Warfare 4 on October 23, 2026. The rules and shop below come from the official September 29 announcement, so treat the recommendations as a practical pre-release framework rather than a proven tier list. The announcement is available from Call of Duty’s official Modern Warfare 4 PC and features update.

How Collateral works
Collateral is a competitive multiplayer mode aimed at players who enjoy Search and Destroy. Two teams alternate between attacking and defending two bomb sites. Every player begins with a pistol, then earns in-game cash by eliminating opponents and by playing the objective. Between rounds, that money can be spent on upgrades, and money earned in earlier rounds remains available later.
That economy changes the meaning of a “best loadout.” A purchase is not simply a permanent class setup. It is a round-by-round decision with a survival cost. If the buyer dies, that player loses the loadout purchased for them. The mode also disables respawns, Killstreaks, automatic health regeneration, and custom loadouts. You therefore have fewer ways to recover from a bad opening fight, and every expensive death can affect both the current round and the next purchase.

The published Collateral buy menu
The announcement confirms the following shop categories and names. It does not provide prices, damage values, handling statistics, magazine sizes, purchase limits, or an official buy sequence.
| Category | Published options |
|---|---|
| Armor and perks | Armor Vest; Battle Hardened; Lethal Reach; Fast Hands; Ghost |
| Equipment | Flash Grenade; Molotov Cocktail; Frag Grenade; Stim; Smoke Wall; Riot Shield |
| Pistols | Silenced Pistol; Revolver; Akimbo Pistols; Power Pistol |
| Standard Issue | Shotgun; Light Machine Gun; Marksman Rifle; Silenced SMG; Agile SMG |
| Tier 1 | Semi Auto Rifle; High Damage Rifle; Burst Rifle; Silenced Rifle; Sniper Rifle |
| Team Buy | UAV |
The labels suggest different tactical roles, but a label alone is not proof of a weapon’s range, recoil, damage, sound profile, or cost. Confirm those details in the live shop and firing range before treating any item as dominant.
Build by job, not by a universal tier list
Until the economy and weapon values are known, choose a job for the round first. A role-based purchase remains useful even if prices change; a supposed “best gun” can become a poor buy when its cost, map range, or handling is different from expectations.

Attacking entry
The entry player takes the first dangerous angle when the team begins clearing toward a site. A practical entry plan is to buy one weapon suited to the distance your route requires, then reserve enough cash for a piece of equipment that helps the team cross or clear a contested area. A Flash Grenade, Frag Grenade, Smoke Wall, or Riot Shield may each support a different approach, but the announcement does not define their exact radius, duration, damage, or blocking behavior. Pick one only after deciding what obstacle it is meant to solve.
Armor Vest and Battle Hardened are listed in the protection-and-perk group. If the live game shows that either meaningfully improves your chance of surviving the first duel or resisting a common disabling effect, those purchases may be sensible for an entry role. Do not assume their strength or price before seeing the in-game descriptions.
Site defender
A defender’s priority is to delay the plant, hold a useful line, and stay alive long enough for teammates to rotate. A Shotgun can be considered for a genuinely close defensive position, while a Marksman Rifle, High Damage Rifle, or Sniper Rifle may fit a longer sightline if the map provides one. Those are role matches, not performance claims.

Smoke Wall, Molotov Cocktail, Frag Grenade, and Riot Shield can be evaluated as delay tools. The key question is not “Which item is strongest?” but “Which item changes the attacker’s route or timing at this site?” Save the item for the moment that protects the bomb site or buys time for a teammate rather than throwing it immediately without information.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Information and support player
Support players create safer fights for teammates. A Smoke Wall may obscure a crossing, a Flash Grenade may help a synchronized clear, and a Frag Grenade or Molotov Cocktail may force opponents out of cover. The exact interaction of these items with the two sites must be learned in play.
The UAV is explicitly a team purchase. Coordinate its timing before anyone spends money: decide which round needs information, which teammate activates or calls the use, and what the team will do with the information. Because the announcement gives neither its cost nor its effect duration, do not treat it as an automatic first purchase.
Late-round anchor
An anchor protects a site or a flank while teammates contest the other area. This player should value a weapon that remains controllable from the chosen position and should avoid taking unnecessary early duels. Ghost, Ghost’s actual detection behavior, and the value of a Silenced Pistol or Silenced Rifle cannot be confirmed from the announcement; use the live descriptions and observed match behavior before committing economy to a stealth plan.
A round-by-round buying procedure
Use this sequence at the buy screen. It deliberately avoids invented prices and thresholds.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Check the round’s job. Identify whether you are entering, holding a site, supporting a clear, watching a flank, or preparing for a retake. Your job determines the distance and utility you need.
- Review available cash and team purchases. Note your own balance, what teammates can afford, and whether the team is considering UAV. Money carries over, so spending everything is not automatically correct.
- Secure the essential weapon. Choose from the published pistol, Standard Issue, or Tier 1 categories according to the route and sightlines you expect. If you cannot explain what fight the weapon is for, delay the purchase until you can.
- Add protection or a perk only when it changes survival odds. Compare Armor Vest, Battle Hardened, Lethal Reach, Fast Hands, and Ghost using their live descriptions. A perk that helps your role is preferable to a costly item you will not use.
- Buy one purposeful piece of equipment. Tie Flash Grenade, Molotov Cocktail, Frag Grenade, Stim, Smoke Wall, or Riot Shield to a specific action: clear, delay, cross, recover, or hold. Avoid buying several items that solve the same problem while leaving your weapon weak.
- Confirm the plan aloud. Tell teammates who has the entry tool, who is holding the flank, and whether the team is saving for a later round. This prevents duplicated utility and accidental overspending.
- Reassess after the round. Record what actually helped, who survived, and whether the purchase was lost on death. Carry that information into the next buy instead of repeating a default class.
Attacking tactics for the two-site objective
Opening the round
Do not turn a pistol start into an isolated rush. Since everyone begins with a pistol, the opening seconds favor information, spacing, and coordinated pressure. Send enough players to identify the defensive setup while keeping a route for a late rotation. An early elimination earns cash, but an unnecessary death also removes that player’s bought equipment in later rounds.

Use the first attack to learn which lanes are watched, which defender rotates quickly, and where utility is being saved. That information has value even when the round does not produce a plant. Objective play is also an announced source of cash, so the team should not treat kills as the only way to fund future purchases.
Clearing a site
Assign each purchased item before entering. One player can prepare a Flash Grenade for a contested corner, another can hold a Frag Grenade or Molotov Cocktail for a likely defender position, and a third can watch the flank. These assignments are planning examples; the announcement does not establish the items’ exact effects.
Move behind the player whose equipment is changing the space. A Smoke Wall is useful only if the team crosses or plants while the obstruction matters. A Riot Shield is useful only if its live behavior lets the assigned player accomplish a defined task. Do not spend a scarce item and then wait outside the site without converting that advantage into territory.

After the plant
Once the objective is secured, stop taking unnecessary forward fights. Establish crossfire, protect the player with the safest escape route, and make defenders spend time reaching the site. Equipment should be held for the retake window rather than used just because it remains available. A surviving player keeps the purchased loadout; a needless challenge can erase that value.
Defensive tactics and retakes
Initial defense
Split responsibility between the two sites and the routes connecting them. A defender who leaves a site should communicate the move so the remaining player is not unknowingly left alone. Because there are no respawns, a single lost defender changes the numbers for the entire round.
Choose a weapon for the position you can actually hold. A Shotgun may fit a close choke, while a Marksman Rifle, Sniper Rifle, or another rifle category may suit a longer lane. The correct choice depends on the map, which the announcement does not detail. If your first position is repeatedly exposed to a different distance, change the purchase or the position rather than forcing the same duel.

Responding to pressure
When attackers reveal their route, delay before committing to a wide swing. Use available equipment to make the approach slower or less predictable, then rotate with a teammate. The objective rewards time management: preserving two defenders for a retake is often more valuable than chasing one attacker into an unknown angle.
Retaking a site
Retakes should be announced as a group action. Count living teammates, identify the safest entry, and decide which equipment is being used first. A Flash Grenade, Smoke Wall, Frag Grenade, or Molotov Cocktail can each support a different retake plan, but the team must know the intended sequence. If the retake is no longer realistic, preserve surviving players and their loadouts for the next round rather than donating isolated eliminations.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to manage money across rounds
Collateral’s economy has three confirmed characteristics: eliminations generate cash, objective play generates cash, and earned money carries between rounds. Those rules create a save-or-spend decision without publishing a universal threshold.
Spend when the purchase has a defined job
Buy when the next round’s plan depends on a weapon, protection item, or utility that your starting pistol cannot provide. Write the job in a short phrase—“hold long lane,” “clear close site,” “cover plant,” or “support retake.” If the purchase has no job, keeping the money may give the team more options later.
Save when survival is uncertain
Saving is especially reasonable when the team is likely to face a stronger armed opponent, when several teammates cannot afford compatible gear, or when the planned route does not require a specialized item. The announcement does not reveal prices, so use the actual shop totals rather than copying a fixed internet buy order.
Track the cost of dying
Death removes the dead player’s loadout. Before taking a low-probability duel, ask whether the information or possible elimination is worth losing the weapon, perk, and equipment already purchased. A team that preserves two equipped players can enter the next round with more tactical choices than a team that trades all its gear for one late kill.

Coordinate team buys
Discuss shared spending before the buy timer ends. A UAV is the only explicitly named team purchase, so establish who wants it, what round it supports, and what action follows its information. Do not assume that one player buying it automatically helps everyone unless the live rules confirm the targeting, duration, and cost.
Playing without automatic health regeneration
Automatic health regeneration is disabled, and Stim appears in the equipment menu. The announcement does not explain how Stim works, how much it restores, or whether it has a delay or limitation, so no exact healing sequence can be promised.
The tactical consequence is still clear: damage can remain relevant after a fight. After taking damage, communicate your condition, avoid exposing the same angle repeatedly, and let a healthier teammate take the next contact when possible. Treat Stim as a recovery option to test and document in the live game, not as a guaranteed replacement for cover and patience.
Conditional loadout templates to test at launch
These are starting templates, not proven “best” classes. Replace any item when its live cost or behavior makes the role inefficient.
Close-site entry
- Weapon: Shotgun or Agile SMG, depending on the actual engagement distance.
- Support: Flash Grenade, Frag Grenade, or Riot Shield for the planned entry action.
- Optional protection: Armor Vest or Battle Hardened if the live description supports surviving the site’s common threat.
- Risk: A close-range build can become ineffective if defenders force a long lane.
Long-lane defender
- Weapon: Marksman Rifle, Sniper Rifle, or another rifle that fits the sightline.
- Support: Smoke Wall or Molotov Cocktail to delay a push or protect a rotation.
- Positioning: Hold a line with an escape route rather than a dead-end angle.
- Risk: A long-range purchase loses value if the enemy reaches the site before you can reposition.
Stealth and flank watch
- Weapon: Silenced SMG, Silenced Pistol, or Silenced Rifle, subject to live sound and damage behavior.
- Perk: Ghost only after confirming what information it conceals.
- Equipment: Smoke Wall or Stim if the live descriptions support your route and recovery plan.
- Risk: Stealth gear does not replace a teammate who can trade a fight.
Utility support
- Weapon: A Standard Issue or Tier 1 weapon that remains usable while supporting the team.
- Equipment: Flash Grenade, Frag Grenade, Molotov Cocktail, or Smoke Wall, with one clearly assigned purpose.
- Team action: Coordinate UAV timing rather than purchasing it automatically.
- Risk: Carrying several support items is wasteful if the team does not execute around them.
What to verify when the mode goes live
The official announcement leaves several facts open. Check them in the live shop, menus, and matches before publishing or following a fixed tier list:
- Cash prices for every armor, perk, equipment item, weapon, and UAV.
- Weapon damage, range, recoil, rate of fire, magazine size, and handling.
- Whether a player can buy more than one equipment item or perk in a round.
- How Stim, Smoke Wall, Riot Shield, and each grenade function in practice.
- What Ghost, Battle Hardened, Lethal Reach, and Fast Hands change.
- UAV cost, duration, coverage, and whether its information is shared with the whole team.
- Round timer, plant and defuse timing, starting cash, and any bonus for a win streak or objective action.
- Whether the shop allows purchases after a player dies, and exactly when loadouts are removed.
Use those observations to replace role-based guesses with measured choices. Until the missing values are published, the reliable principles are to buy for the next job, preserve equipped players, convert utility into objective progress, and communicate every shared spend.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Copying a fixed buy order: Without published prices and limits, a universal sequence can be unaffordable or inefficient.
- Spending the entire balance every round: Carryover money makes saving a legitimate strategic option.
- Buying for a weapon label: “Sniper,” “silenced,” or “agile” describes a category name, not a verified performance advantage.
- Using utility without a follow-up: A grenade or smoke that does not create movement, time, or a safer fight has not paid for itself.
- Taking a solo fight after buying expensive gear: Death removes that player’s loadout.
- Assuming normal multiplayer systems apply: Collateral disables respawns, Killstreaks, automatic health regeneration, and custom loadouts.
- Ignoring objective income: Objective play is an announced source of cash, so coordinated progress can fund the team even without constant eliminations.
The Bottom Line
Before launch, the strongest Collateral plan is a disciplined framework rather than a named meta loadout: choose a role, buy only what advances that role, coordinate UAV and utility, preserve your life, and adapt once real prices and weapon behavior are available.
