Best Live Chat Software for Small Business in 2026: How to Choose

There is no single best live chat platform for every small business. For website-only conversations, a focused chat product may be enough; businesses already using a CRM may prefer chat that preserves customer history; and teams handling email, social messages, or tickets may need a broader help desk. Compare the billing unit, included usage, integrations, and required channels—not just the advertised starting price.

Live chat, chatbot automation, or a help desk?

Live chat software lets customers and support staff exchange messages in real time. It typically gives agents a place to manage multiple conversations and may show customer context alongside the chat. Some products add automated answers or AI; broader help-desk suites can combine chat with email, voice, social messaging, routing, reporting, and ticketing. Zendesk’s overview describes those wider service capabilities: Zendesk live chat.

A website chat widget

A focused widget is a sensible starting point when most support begins on your website and a small team can answer incoming chats. Before choosing, check whether the product connects to your website platform and whether agents can assign, hand off, and review conversations in the way your team needs.

Automation alongside human support

Chatbots and other automation can handle routine requests, but they do not remove the need for people to resolve complex or unusual problems. Consider automation if repetitive questions consume meaningful staff time, and verify how customers reach a human when an automated answer is insufficient.

A help desk or shared service workspace

A help desk becomes more relevant when customers contact you through several channels or agents need ticket handoffs, routing, reporting, and a common customer history. It can simplify a growing workflow, but its broader scope may cost more than a simple chat widget and introduce features a very small team does not need.

Live chat software compared for small businesses

The options below are organized by operating need, not by a universal performance ranking. Prices are vendor-published USD snapshots available for this guide as of October 4, 2026; they are not a like-for-like cost test. Confirm current rates, billing terms, limits, and availability with each vendor before buying.

Product Best fit Billing unit and published price Limits or plan notes Main trade-off
LiveChat Businesses focused on website chat Per person. Starter: $19 per person/month billed annually; $25 monthly. Team: $49 annually or $59 monthly. Business: $79 annually or $89 monthly. Starter lists one user; Team and Business list up to 400 users. See LiveChat pricing. Simple to compare by agent count, but total cost rises as the team grows; confirm which plan features are essential.
HubSpot Service Hub Businesses already using HubSpot CRM that want chat tied to CRM conversation history Paid plans are seat-based. Published comparison rates: Starter $7/seat/month, Professional $90/seat/month, Enterprise $150/seat/month; billing and package details can affect price. A free option is listed; free live chat includes HubSpot branding, while paid plans show branding removal. See HubSpot Service Hub pricing. CRM context can fit an existing HubSpot workflow, but verify plan boundaries and the cost of the features and seats you need.
Zendesk Teams considering chat as part of a broader, multichannel service workflow Zendesk’s comparison guide lists a starting price of $19 per agent/month billed annually. The guide lists a 14-day trial; its price is from a vendor-authored comparison article, not a current independent test. See Zendesk’s live chat overview and confirm current plan details directly. Broader channel, routing, reporting, and self-service scope can suit complex workflows, but may exceed a small team’s requirements.
Crisp Businesses that prefer workspace-level billing rather than a charge for each domain Per workspace; a stable full plan-price table is not established here, so price is not stated. The pricing FAQ says optional charges may apply for some features, integrations, contacts, and higher operator counts; account for VAT where applicable. See Crisp pricing. Workspace billing may be easier to reason about than per-domain billing, but extras and operator limits can affect the total.

The table reflects vendor-published information, not hands-on tests or measured product performance. Price snapshots can change, and a low starting price does not establish the cost of the configuration your business needs.

How to estimate the real monthly cost

First identify the billing unit. A per-seat or per-person plan grows with the number of agents; a workspace plan is attached to a shared workspace; and some plans price or limit usage by conversations or other selected measures. The difference matters: a business with many operators but few conversations may have a different cost profile from one with a small team and high chat volume.

  1. Count the people who need access. Include part-time coverage and managers who need to review or report on conversations. Check whether the plan charges every user or permits a stated user count.
  2. Estimate incoming conversation volume. Identify expected chat volume and any plan quota that applies. If automation is part of the plan, check whether automated or AI conversations use a separate allowance.
  3. List the channels you actually support. Decide whether you need website chat alone or also email, WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger, voice, or other social channels. Verify that the vendor and selected plan support the channels your customers use.
  4. Check integrations and customer context. Confirm the product works with your website platform, CRM, and existing support tools. If agents need a shared conversation history, test whether it is available in the plan you are considering.
  5. Price required features, not just the entry tier. Check routing, ticket handoff, reporting, branding removal, automation, and any operator or contact limits. Add optional charges and taxes where applicable.
  6. Compare billing commitments. Annual prices may be lower than monthly prices but require a different commitment. Confirm the billing period, trial duration, renewal terms, and cancellation conditions before entering payment details.

For example, a two-person shop should not compare only the advertised per-agent rate: it should calculate the monthly total for both operators and verify that the necessary channel and assignment features are included. A business with several support staff should also account for growth, because per-seat pricing can scale differently from workspace billing. These are cost checks, not a claim that one billing model is inherently cheaper.

How to choose based on your support workflow

Choose focused website chat when the website is the main channel

If most customer questions arrive while people browse your site, start with a focused chat product such as LiveChat. Compare the number of agents who will use it with the listed per-person price, then check the plan’s limits and whether it supports the handoffs and reports your team needs. A dedicated chat tool may be unnecessary if your existing help desk already handles website conversations well.

Start with your CRM if customer history is central

For an existing HubSpot customer, investigate the Service Hub chat and plan boundaries before introducing another inbox. The key question is not simply whether chat is available: it is whether the conversation record, seats, and features fit the workflow you already use. Free live chat’s branding and paid-plan feature distinctions may affect the decision.

Consider a broader service platform when channels multiply

If the team handles chat alongside email, voice, social messaging, and tickets, compare a wider service platform such as Zendesk. Evaluate the whole workflow—routing, reporting, self-service, and channel coverage—rather than buying it solely for a web widget. Zendesk’s product description is vendor-authored and explains its offering; it is not independent evidence of performance or suitability for every small business.

Check workspace billing and extras when operators share a workspace

Crisp describes billing by workspace rather than by domain. That structure may be relevant when multiple sites or staff share one service environment, but do not assume the base subscription covers every requirement. Review operator counts, contacts, integrations, optional features, and taxes when establishing the total.

Questions to settle before you sign up

  • Can customers reach a human if an automated response does not solve the issue?
  • Can agents see customer history and transfer a conversation without losing useful context?
  • Does the plan include the channels, integrations, and number of operators you need?
  • Are there message, conversation, contact, or AI usage limits that could change your bill?
  • Does a free option add branding or omit a feature your business depends on?
  • What happens to conversation history and workflows if you change plans or leave?

Ask vendors for the exact plan and billing configuration in writing if a feature or quota is central to your decision. Published pricing pages can change, and vendor descriptions do not establish that every integration, channel, or feature is available in every plan or region.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there free live chat software for a small business?

HubSpot Service Hub lists a free option that includes live chat, with HubSpot branding. Confirm the current feature limits and whether the branding is acceptable for your business on HubSpot’s pricing page.

How much does live chat software cost?

It depends on the billing unit, seats, usage limits, billing period, and required features. The published examples in this guide range from per-person pricing to seat-based plans; workspace and usage-related charges may also apply. Check the vendor’s current terms for your exact configuration.

Do I need live chat or a help desk?

A website chat product may be sufficient when support happens mainly through web conversations and a small team can manage them. Consider a help desk when agents need to handle several channels, route or ticket conversations, and share a broader customer history.

Does a chatbot replace live agents?

Not for every request. Automation can help with routine questions, while people remain important for complex or unusual issues. Check how the product transfers a customer to a human when automation is not enough.
