Short answer: For an experienced builder using a nickel-plated copper cooler or heat spreader, Thermal Grizzly Conductonaut is the best-documented general-purpose liquid-metal choice in the available manufacturer guidance. Conductonaut Extreme is aimed at applications with maximum power density, but it is not a universal upgrade. Both are gallium-based, electrically conductive materials that must be kept away from aluminum and from exposed processor-package components.
Which liquid-metal TIM should you choose?
The best liquid metal thermal interface materials for CPUs and GPUs are not selected by thermal-conductivity marketing alone. The cooler’s contact material, the way the alloy will be contained, the electrical risk around the die or package, and your ability to apply and inspect a conductive liquid all matter at least as much.

| Use case | Most defensible choice from the available documentation | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Nickel-plated copper CPU or GPU contact surface | Thermal Grizzly Conductonaut | It has the clearest published application scope for CPUs, GPUs, notebooks and ICs, plus stated material properties and package sizes. |
| Very high power density with an experienced applicator | Conductonaut Extreme | Thermal Grizzly positions it for applications where maximum power density is the priority; the practical gain still depends on the cooler, mounting and containment. |
| Any aluminum cooler or heat spreader | Neither product | Thermal Grizzly says not to use Conductonaut or Conductonaut Extreme with aluminum coolers. Indium gives the same warning for gallium-based liquid metals generally. |
| First-time builder or difficult-to-contain package | Neither, unless the installation can be made safe | Both materials are electrically conductive. A spill onto unintended package areas can cause immediate failure or later instability. |
No cited official source establishes a universal cross-platform benchmark winner. A temperature result from one CPU, GPU, cooler, mounting pressure, application amount and test profile cannot be transferred automatically to another system.

What liquid metal thermal interface material is
Thermal Grizzly describes Conductonaut as “a liquid metal thermal compound based on a eutectic alloy.” The product is an alloy containing tin, gallium and indium rather than the silicone or ceramic carrier used in conventional thermal pastes. In a correctly assembled interface, the liquid alloy fills microscopic gaps between the processor’s heat-spreader or die contact area and the cooler base, reducing the amount of poorly conducting air in that joint.

Liquid metal is physically different from a paste, so normal paste-handling assumptions do not apply. It can move under pressure, wet some metals aggressively and conduct electricity. A successful installation therefore requires a compatible surface, a controlled amount, mechanical containment and a final inspection before power is applied.
Conductonaut’s published application list includes CPUs, GPUs, notebooks and integrated circuits. That broad list describes intended application categories, not permission to apply it to every cooler design. A notebook heat pipe with an aluminum contact plate remains incompatible even if the processor itself is supported.
Surface compatibility: nickel-plated copper versus aluminum
Why nickel-plated copper is the preferred contact
Thermal Grizzly recommends nickel-plated surfaces for long-term stability and identifies nickel-plated copper bases as the best choice for Conductonaut’s long-term performance. The plating provides the intended contact surface while the copper beneath it supplies the cooler’s thermal path.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsInspect the actual surface that touches the liquid metal, not merely the cooler’s advertised base material. A copper cooler may be nickel-plated, bare copper or partly coated. A heat spreader may have a nickel finish while a replacement cooler base does not. If the coating is scratched, worn through or interrupted, the exposed area changes the compatibility question.
Is liquid metal safe on an aluminum heatsink?
No. The answer to “is liquid metal safe on an aluminum heatsink?” is no for gallium-based products such as Conductonaut and Conductonaut Extreme. Thermal Grizzly explicitly states that Conductonaut thermal paste must not be used with aluminum coolers and gives the same prohibition for Conductonaut Extreme. Indium also warns that gallium-based liquid metals should not contact aluminum.

Do not rely on a thin-looking coating, an anodized appearance or a manufacturer’s generic “metal base” description as proof of safety. Confirm the contact finish in the cooler’s technical documentation. If the manufacturer does not identify a compatible nickel-plated surface, treat the interface as unverified and choose a different TIM or cooler.
Electrical safety is a design requirement
Conductonaut is explicitly listed as not electrically insulating. The liquid can bridge contacts if it spreads beyond the intended thermal interface. This is especially important on exposed GPU dies, delidded processors, notebook packages and any assembly with capacitors or other components near the die.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Intel warns that liquid-metal TIM reaching areas that should not contact it, such as capacitors on the processor package, may cause immediate issues or failures, or may produce performance degradation and system instability over time. That warning describes both catastrophic and delayed outcomes: a system can boot after a marginal application and still develop trouble later if the alloy migrates or a residue remains conductive.
What must be contained
- The liquid must remain inside the intended die-to-cooler contact patch.
- Nearby capacitors, resistors, traces and exposed package material must be shielded from accidental spread.
- The cooler must apply even pressure without allowing the alloy to squeeze toward package edges.
- The surrounding area must remain clean enough for you to inspect for droplets, smears and conductive residue.
Containment is not a cosmetic step. If you cannot see the entire perimeter of the interface after assembly, you cannot confidently verify that the material stayed where it belongs.
Conductonaut specifications and what they mean
| Property | Conductonaut specification | Practical interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Material | Eutectic liquid-metal alloy containing tin, gallium and indium | It is a conductive alloy, not a conventional insulating paste. |
| Applications listed by the manufacturer | CPU, GPU, notebook and IC applications | The cooler surface and package geometry still determine whether a specific installation is suitable. |
| Package sizes | 1 g and 5 g | Choose the smallest package that covers your planned installations; the package size is not an indication of performance. |
| Density | 6.24 g/cm³ | A small mass occupies a comparatively small volume, so dispensing more than needed increases spill risk rather than guaranteeing better cooling. |
| Operating temperature | −50°C to +200°C | This is the manufacturer-listed material range, not a promise that every CPU, GPU, socket or cooler can operate safely across it. |
| Viscosity | 0.0021 Pa·s | The alloy is fluid enough that application control and containment are essential. |
| Electrical insulation | No | Protect surrounding package components and inspect the perimeter before powering on. |
| Recommended long-term surface | Nickel-plated copper | Do not substitute aluminum; the manufacturer prohibits aluminum cooler contact. |
The listed temperature range describes the compound’s stated operating range. It does not eliminate the need to observe the processor or graphics card maker’s limits, the cooler’s limits and the system’s electrical protections.

Conductonaut vs Conductonaut Extreme
“Conductonaut vs Conductonaut Extreme” is best treated as a suitability decision, not a simple performance ranking. Thermal Grizzly positions Conductonaut Extreme for applications with maximum power density. That positioning may matter in a tightly constrained, high-heat-flux design, but the product is still subject to the same fundamental restrictions: no aluminum contact, electrical conductivity and the need for controlled application.
| Decision factor | Conductonaut | Conductonaut Extreme |
|---|---|---|
| Product role | General liquid-metal compound with published CPU, GPU, notebook and IC applications | Variant positioned for maximum power-density applications |
| Surface compatibility | Nickel-plated surfaces recommended; aluminum prohibited | Aluminum prohibited; a separate preferred finish is not stated in the cited product notes |
| Electrical behavior | Not electrically insulating | Because it is a liquid-metal variant, treat the installation as electrically hazardous unless the manufacturer’s current documentation states otherwise |
| Published package sizes | 1 g and 5 g | Not stated in the cited product notes |
| Published operating range | −50°C to +200°C | Not stated in the cited product notes |
| Published viscosity and density | 0.0021 Pa·s; 6.24 g/cm³ | Not stated in the cited product notes |
| Best reason to select it | Documented, broad application scope and known handling characteristics | Your design genuinely prioritizes maximum power density and you can meet the containment requirements |
Do not assume “Extreme” means lower temperatures in every build. A controlled comparison would need the same processor or GPU, cooler, mounting pressure, surface finish, application amount, fan or pump settings, workload and ambient conditions. The cited official material does not provide one common benchmark under those controls.
Choose by the actual CPU or GPU installation
Desktop CPU with a nickel-plated cooler
This is the most straightforward candidate: the contact materials align with the manufacturer’s recommendation, and the cooler can usually be removed and inspected. Conductonaut is the better-documented starting point. Extreme is reasonable only when the build has a specific high-power-density reason and the installer is comfortable with the additional handling discipline.
GPU with an exposed die
GPU dies often leave less margin around the contact area than a conventional desktop heat spreader. Confirm that the cooler base is compatible, identify nearby package components, and plan how the alloy will be prevented from reaching them. If the cooler has an aluminum contact plate, do not proceed.
Notebook or compact system
Conductonaut’s application list includes notebooks, but compact designs can make inspection and containment difficult. Verify the heat pipe’s contact finish, the pressure mechanism and the route the alloy could take if the system is moved or repeatedly heated and cooled. A listed application category does not override an aluminum base or inaccessible package edges.

Unknown or mixed-metal cooler
Stop until the contact surface is identified. “Copper-colored,” “metal,” and “premium base” are not sufficient specifications. When the finish cannot be confirmed, the risk is not worth guessing with a conductive gallium alloy.
How to apply liquid metal safely
The exact applicator and preparation materials vary by product package and system. The following procedure focuses on the decisions that prevent the serious failure modes.
- Confirm compatibility before opening the package. Identify the cooler’s contact metal and coating, the processor or GPU package layout and the manufacturer’s current instructions. Reject aluminum contact surfaces.
- Power down and expose the entire interface. Disconnect the system, remove the cooler according to its service instructions and give yourself a clear view of the die or heat spreader and the cooler base.
- Clean old TIM completely. Remove old compound from both mating surfaces using a method and cleaning material that are safe for those surfaces. Do not leave paste, fibers or loose debris that could spread the liquid alloy.
- Plan the containment boundary. Identify capacitors, traces and package edges near the die. Use an appropriate insulating or physical barrier only if it is compatible with the hardware and does not prevent correct cooler seating. The barrier must not substitute for a compatible metal surface.
- Dispense a minimal amount. Liquid metal needs only enough material to wet the intended contact patch. More compound increases the chance of squeeze-out; it does not compensate for an uneven cooler base or poor mounting.
- Spread it under control. Work the alloy across the target area with the supplied applicator or another method approved for the product. Keep the material away from package components and do not drag it across unprotected circuitry.
- Inspect before assembly. Look for beads, streaks or droplets outside the contact area. If any material is misplaced, remove it completely rather than relying on the cooler to trap it.
- Seat the cooler evenly. Lower it without sliding it across the package, then tighten the mounting hardware in the cooler maker’s prescribed sequence and pattern. Uneven pressure can force the alloy toward an edge.
- Inspect again where possible. Before closing the system, check the visible perimeter and nearby components. Confirm that no alloy has reached a capacitor, trace, socket contact or other unintended area.
- Test conservatively. Start the system while monitoring temperatures, stability and expected fan or pump behavior. Stop immediately if there is instability, an unexpected temperature rise or evidence that the cooler is not seated correctly.
Because the material is conductive, a clean-looking installation is not proof of safety if the inspection was incomplete. When the interface cannot be inspected or the package cannot be adequately protected, use a non-conductive TIM instead.

Nickel-plated surfaces are recommended for long-term stability. That recommendation is about the mating surface over time, not only the temperature on the first day. Record the surface finish and installation date so a later service technician knows that liquid metal was used.

During maintenance, remove the cooler carefully and inspect both surfaces. Look for displaced material, dry-looking areas, discoloration, damaged plating or residue outside the original contact patch. If the cooler has shifted, the system has been transported, or temperatures have changed unexpectedly, treat the interface as a service item rather than simply increasing fan speed.

The manufacturer-listed −50°C to +200°C range for Conductonaut does not remove mechanical concerns caused by repeated thermal cycling, mounting movement or a damaged coating. Reapplication should begin with the same compatibility and electrical-safety checks as the first installation.
Common failure modes and fixes
| Symptom or mistake | Likely cause | Correct response |
|---|---|---|
| Liquid metal was applied to an aluminum cooler | Surface compatibility was assumed from appearance or a generic specification | Do not power or continue the installation. Remove the cooler and replace it with a compatible nickel-plated contact surface or select another TIM. |
| System fails immediately after installation | Conductive alloy reached an unintended package or board area | Disconnect power, document where the material traveled and perform a complete inspection and cleaning. Do not repeatedly restart the system. |
| System works but later becomes unstable | Migration, residue, mounting movement or a compromised interface | Shut down, remove the cooler and inspect the entire perimeter and nearby components; do not mask the symptom with higher cooling speeds. |
| Temperatures are higher than expected | Insufficient wetting, excess material displaced from the patch, uneven mounting or an incompatible surface | Recheck surface condition, seating pressure and coverage. A larger amount is not the first remedy. |
| Material is visible outside the die or heat spreader | Too much was dispensed or the cooler slid during installation | Remove all misplaced alloy before applying power. Verify that no conductive residue remains near package components. |
| Cooler finish is unknown | Documentation did not identify the contact metal or plating | Pause the installation and obtain a definitive specification; do not guess. |
What to compare before buying
For any liquid-metal thermal compound, compare these characteristics in order:
- Contact compatibility: Confirm nickel-plated copper or another surface explicitly approved by the manufacturer; exclude aluminum.
- Electrical risk: Determine whether the package exposes nearby capacitors, traces or other components and whether you can shield and inspect them.
- Application control: Check how easily you can dispense, spread, remove and verify a very small amount in the available workspace.
- Power-density objective: Choose a product positioned for your heat-flux requirement only after the surface and containment conditions are satisfied.
- Operating range and stability: Use published material limits as one input, not as permission to exceed the CPU, GPU, socket or cooler’s own limits.
- Serviceability: Consider whether the cooler can be removed and the interface inspected later, especially in a notebook or compact chassis.
Thermal conductivity by itself is an incomplete comparison. A theoretically superior compound that contacts aluminum or leaks onto a package can produce a worse result than a less aggressive material applied safely.
