For most backpackers, the choice is between a 5,000 mAh bank for a short trip and minimal phone top-ups, or a 10,000 mAh bank for a more useful reserve. Carry 20,000 mAh or more only when you can name the extra devices or charging demands that justify the weight. Capacity printed in mAh describes the battery cells; it does not mean that all of that energy reaches your devices over USB.

How much capacity do you need?
Choose 5,000 mAh for a small reserve
A 5,000 mAh bank is the weight-first choice when your trip is short, phone use is modest, and a limited top-up is enough. CleverHiker’s NB Air testing gives a more practical reference than the label alone: the publisher measured about 16 Wh usable and reported roughly one iPhone 15 Pro charge in total, split across about two partial charges. Actual results vary with the phone, cable, charging conditions, and how much energy is lost in conversion.

A 10,000 mAh bank is a sensible default for many backpackers who want to recharge a phone more than once or also keep a small accessory running. Treat it as a capacity class, not a promise of a fixed number of phone charges. The Nitecore NB10000 Gen3 illustrates why: Nitecore specifies its cell capacity as 10,000 mAh at 3.85 V, or 38.5 Wh, while separately listing rated output energy at 5 V. Battery-cell mAh and USB-output mAh use different voltages and are not interchangeable.

Carry 20,000 mAh or more for a named need
Large banks make sense when you have a clear load—such as a camera, tablet, laptop, or multiple devices that need charging between outlets. They add substantial weight: CleverHiker lists the 25,000 mAh UGREEN 145W at more than a pound, while Anker gives its Prime 27,650 mAh bank a weight of around 600 g. For ordinary phone charging, that tradeoff is usually hard to justify.
What the NB10000 Gen3 specifications do—and do not—tell you
Nitecore’s current Gen3 product page specifies a 150 g ±5 g body weight, excluding accessories, and dimensions of 122.0 × 59.2 × 10.6 mm. It lists a 10,000 mAh, 3.85 V (38.5 Wh) Li-ion cell, USB-C input up to 18 W, and two USB-C ports. Either output port can provide up to 22.5 W on its own; when both are used, combined output is limited to 15 W. That combined limit matters if you plan to charge two devices at once. The same product page lists rated energy of 6,200 mAh at 5 V (typical 2 A), but Nitecore’s hosted manual instead gives 5,400 mAh at 5 V (typical 2 A). Because the manufacturer sources disagree, do not treat either output-mAh figure as a settled exact measure of what your device will receive. Check ports, charging speed, and what you carry with it
- Match connectors. Check whether your phone, camera, and other devices use USB-C or USB-A, and whether the bank provides the needed port. The Gen3 has two USB-C ports. Nitecore’s manual also lists a USB-C-to-USB-A adapter as an accessory; confirm what is included with the specific package.
- Check simultaneous output. A bank’s maximum single-port output may not apply when two devices are connected. On the Gen3, the maximum is 22.5 W from either USB-C output individually, but 15 W total across both in use.
- Plan the recharge at home or in town. Input speed and access to an outlet affect how quickly a bank is ready for the next leg. Nitecore specifies up to 18 W USB-C input for the Gen3. CleverHiker’s 3 hours 2 minutes recharge result applies to its Gen4 test setup, not every charger or the Gen3.
- Count the complete carried kit. Add the cable and any adapter you need to the bank’s listed weight. A lightweight body can be less useful if it requires a cable or connector you did not pack.
Rain, impacts, and cold-weather use
IPX5 is not permission to submerge it
Nitecore rates the NB10000 Gen3 IPX5. That supports describing it as resistant to water jets or splashes, not waterproof for immersion. Keep it protected from prolonged exposure and do not assume that a weather-resistance rating covers every port, cable connection, or damage scenario.
Cold reduces available performance
In CleverHiker’s refrigerator test, its 2024 review of the NB10000 Gen3 reported an 8.9% efficiency decrease. Its 2026 comparison reported a 13% cold-condition decline for the NB10000 Gen4. These are separate publisher tests of different generations, not a direct comparison between models or a guarantee of how a bank will behave in every temperature. Keep the bank warm during use and storage where practical; its printed capacity does not guarantee unchanged cold-weather output. Drop-test results are model- and test-specific
CleverHiker reports that its Gen3 sample survived an eight-foot drop onto loosely packed dirt and then charged a phone; the same review recorded a 5.3 oz scale weight and a 4-hour-9-minute recharge in its own setup. Those are publisher test results, not manufacturer guarantees. In its later comparison, CleverHiker reports that the UGREEN 145W temporarily stopped working after an eight-foot drop test and resumed normal operation after its next charge. Neither result establishes how another sample or a different landing surface will perform.

A practical way to decide before you buy
- List the devices you will charge. Include the phone and any camera, GPS, headlamp, or other rechargeable device. Decide which are essential and how often they need a top-up.
- Pick the smallest capacity class that covers that load. Start with 5,000 mAh for a limited phone reserve; move to 10,000 mAh for a wider buffer. Choose 20,000 mAh or more only if the added device load makes the extra carry weight worthwhile.
- Verify the exact generation and ports. Compare the precise model name on the manufacturer page and retailer listing, then check individual and combined output, recharge input, and included accessories. Do not apply Gen3 figures to Gen4.
- Weigh the whole setup. Compare the bank plus the cable and adapter you will actually pack. Use manufacturer specifications for stated product weight and label publisher measurements as test results.
- Account for the trip conditions. If cold is likely, plan to keep the bank warm. If rain is likely, use protective storage rather than relying on a splash-resistance rating as permission to expose or immerse the bank.
- Check current availability and price. Retail prices and stock change; the listed prices in the comparison are snapshots, not enduring recommendations.
