For a lightweight first check, use FFmpeg’s structured -progress output to confirm that the encoder is advancing, then check YouTube Live Control Room to see how YouTube is receiving the stream. Add the YouTube Live Streaming API only if you need automated health checks or alerts. These tools observe different parts of the pipeline: local progress alone does not prove YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.
Which monitoring tool should you use?

For most single-stream setups, start with FFmpeg progress plus the Control Room. The API is useful when you need monitoring without a person watching the dashboard. No source-backed comparison establishes that a named Linux process-monitoring utility is the lightest, or that these options have particular CPU or memory costs.

Monitor local encoding with FFmpeg -progress
FFmpeg’s -progress option emits program-friendly progress as periodic key=value lines, including a final progress value of continue or end. Set the reporting interval with -stats_period; the current online manual documents a default interval of 0.5 seconds. That default describes reporting frequency, not measured system load.
Use progress output in a command
The FFmpeg manual’s example is:
ffmpeg -progress pipe:1 -i in.mkv out.mkv
For a long-running stream, send the progress output to a pipe or another supported destination and have a shell wrapper or small program read it. Decide deliberately how the supervising process handles stdout and stderr so progress data and diagnostic messages do not become confusingly mixed. FFmpeg’s regular -stats display is an interactive log; -progress is the documented option when another consumer needs structured data.

For per-frame encoded-packet detail, FFmpeg also documents options such as -stats_enc_post, which can write information to a file. Check the documentation installed with your FFmpeg version: the online manual tracks current revisions and advises consulting local documentation for older versions. FFmpeg documentation
What local progress can and cannot tell you
Advancing progress indicates activity in FFmpeg’s encoding process. It does not independently establish that YouTube is ingesting the stream correctly. A process can be running while delivery has a separate problem, so pair local observation with a YouTube-side check when diagnosing a live broadcast.

Check delivery health in YouTube Live Control Room
While the broadcast is live, YouTube Live Control Room displays stream health and status messages, including specific errors and instructions. It also shows real-time audience metrics. YouTube describes the interface this way: “You can check your stream’s health and analytics while you’re streaming in Live Control Room.” See YouTube Help: See your live stream’s metrics.
This is the most direct human-facing check in the documented options for whether YouTube sees a delivery problem. Use it alongside FFmpeg progress: the dashboard covers the platform’s perspective, while FFmpeg reports local encoder activity.

Use the YouTube Live Streaming API for automated checks
The Live Streaming API exposes a stream’s status.streamStatus and status.healthStatus, as well as configuration issue details and severity. Health states include good, ok, bad, and noData. Issues can identify conditions such as videoIngestionStarved—YouTube is not receiving enough video to maintain smooth streaming—or unsupported codec and bitrate problems.
Choose this route when a script or service must poll stream status, raise alerts, or integrate with existing monitoring. It entails API integration and authentication, so it is unnecessary if you only need to check a stream manually. The reference lists RTMP (including RTMPS), DASH, and HLS as ingestion types; it does not prescribe encoder settings. See Google’s YouTube Live Streaming API: LiveStreams. Separate live health checks from retrospective analytics
Live Control Room metrics and API health data help assess a broadcast while it is running. YouTube says post-stream metrics become available in Analytics within minutes after a live stream ends. Those analytics support retrospective reporting; they are not a substitute for checking live delivery health.
What “lightweight” means here
FFmpeg’s built-in progress output avoids adding a separate monitoring utility when all you need is local status or structured data for a small script. The Control Room adds a human-facing YouTube-side view. The API adds automation at the cost of implementation work. Available evidence does not establish a ranked comparison of Linux process monitors or measured CPU and memory use, so there is no defensible basis here for calling a particular utility empirically the lightest.
