At $59.99 for 421 pieces, it delivers a near 1:1 handheld replica, interchangeable Game Paks and a small footprint without the sourcing risk of retired sets. For a larger shelf centerpiece, choose the LEGO Icons PAC-MAN Arcade 10323; for Nintendo nostalgia, compare the LEGO NES 71374 with the Atari 2600 10306 rather than assuming the bigger set is automatically better.
This guide ranks six licensed LEGO video game sets for adult collectors and gamers by shelf presence, franchise attachment, mechanical interaction, building experience and difficulty of finding a complete new set. Availability changes quickly, especially for retired models, so treat the status notes as a buying snapshot and verify the listing, seller, condition and contents before paying.

How these LEGO gaming sets were ranked
Adult collectors usually want more than a high piece count. The most useful comparison combines five questions:
- Footprint and shelf presence: Does the finished model read clearly from across a room, and will it fit your display?
- Nostalgia or franchise attachment: Is it a faithful object from gaming history, a recognizable level, or a sculpture from a modern world?
- Mechanical interaction: Can you move a mechanism, swap a component or animate a scene, or is it purely static?
- Build complexity: Piece count is a useful proxy for project length, but the type of construction matters as much as the number.
- Acquisition difficulty: A retired set can be the right choice only when you can verify authenticity, completeness and a sensible price.
The table gives the quick answer; the sections below explain what each set is like to build and display.

1. LEGO Super Mario Game Boy 72046: best current compact buy
The Game Boy 72046 is the easiest recommendation when you want a licensed gaming object that fits on a desk or a crowded bookcase. LEGO lists the 18+ set at $59.99 with 421 pieces. Its proportions are a near 1:1 brick-built replica of Nintendo’s original handheld, and the included stand lets you present it as a small display plaque rather than leaving it flat.
What you build and what you can change
The controls are designed to feel like buttons and a directional pad, while the top edge includes a Game Pak slot. Two interchangeable brick-built Game Paks are included: Super Mario Land and The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening. Lenticular screens provide the changing image without a digital display. Swapping the cartridge and screen gives the model two different display identities without buying another set.
What it does not do
This is a static brick model with tactile details, not an electronic toy. It has no light, sound or digital-play functions. That limitation is useful to know before buying: the appeal is scale, recognizable controls and the cartridge swap, not gameplay or app integration.

Why it wins for most buyers
- The $59.99 LEGO-listed price is lower-risk than paying a collector premium for a retired set.
- The 421-piece build is substantial enough for an adult project but manageable in a single sitting or a weekend.
- Its handheld footprint works in office displays, media shelves and cases where a full arcade cabinet would not fit.
- Interchangeable Game Paks let you tailor the display to Nintendo or Zelda nostalgia.
If you want a large, mechanically elaborate showpiece, choose PAC-MAN or the NES instead. If you want a current, compact object with the clearest value proposition, the Game Boy is the strongest pick.
2. LEGO Icons PAC-MAN Arcade 10323: best mechanical arcade display
The PAC-MAN Arcade 10323 is the most theatrical model in this group. It is an 18+ build with 2,651 pieces, nearly the same scale of project as the NES but with an upright arcade-cabinet silhouette that dominates a shelf. LEGO describes it as “a non-functional gaming system loaded with retro game details you’ll want to devour.”
Is the PAC-MAN Arcade playable?
No. It is not a working arcade game and does not run PAC-MAN. A handle activates a mechanical maze inside the cabinet, creating movement that resembles the game’s chase action. A light brick illuminates the coin slot. Those features make it interactive as a display, but they do not provide electronic gameplay, scoring, sound or a screen that plays the original software.

- LEGO Marvel Avengers Iron Man vs. Thanos (76170) is an iconic superhero construction toy designed to develop the imagination, dexterity and building confidence of youngsters aged 4 and up
- Includes Iron Man and Thanos minifigures, a streamlined jet, gun tower and 2 energy stands, one for Iron Man and one for Thanos
- Parents and kids will enjoy lots of fun together, recreating movie scenes and dreaming up endless superhero adventures of their own as they help Iron Man take on super villain Thanos
- This LEGO 4+ set is specially designed with a Starter Brick and simple building steps so youngsters aged 4 and up can learn to build and develop creative confidence as they go
- Iron Man’s jet plane measures over 2 in. (6 cm) high, 4 in. (11 cm) long and 4 in. (12 cm) wide – an ideal size for small hands to pick up, play with and take wherever they go
Hidden construction details
A removable back panel exposes the mechanism, which is useful both for showing visitors how the model works and for maintenance if a moving element is displaced. The interior also contains a hidden 1980s gaming scene. That combination of front-facing arcade styling and rear reveal rewards a display position where you can occasionally turn the model around.
Who should buy it
Choose PAC-MAN when physical interaction and arcade aesthetics matter more than a one-to-one console replica. The 2,651-piece count promises a long, intricate build, and the cabinet format has more visual impact than a small handheld. LEGO currently lists the set as sold out, so a new copy may require a retailer or secondary-market search. Check that the box is sealed or that every moving and lighting component is present before paying a premium.
3. LEGO Nintendo Entertainment System 71374: best large Nintendo nostalgia piece
The LEGO Nintendo Entertainment System 71374 recreates an entire 1980s living-room setup in 2,646 pieces: the console, controller, Game Pak and a retro television. It is an 18+ set and one of the most convincing LEGO tributes to the hardware era because the TV is part of the display rather than an accessory placed beside it.
How the interaction works
A handle operates a scrolling Mario scene on the television. The mechanism gives the screen a physical sense of movement while remaining a brick-built display. An interactive LEGO Mario figure can scan the screen, but that figure is sold separately; the NES set alone does not include the digital character or turn the television into a playable electronic game.
NES strengths and limitations
- Strength: It tells a complete nostalgia story—console, controller, cartridge and television—in one coordinated model.
- Strength: The scrolling screen adds a memorable mechanical feature without requiring batteries or an app.
- Limitation: It is a large display commitment and a more involved build than the Game Boy.
- Limitation: LEGO currently marks it retired and hard to find, so new, complete examples can cost more than their original retail price.
Buy the NES when the living-room context is as important to you as the console itself. If you prefer a smaller object, the Game Boy delivers Nintendo hardware nostalgia in far less space. If you want Atari’s cartridge history, compare the NES with the 10306 below.

The Atari 2600 10306 is built around the visual language of early cartridge consoles. The 18+ set includes the console, a joystick, three cartridge builds and three small scenes based on Asteroids, Adventure and Centipede. A hidden 1980s room scene adds another layer for collectors who enjoy discovering details inside the cabinet.

- Let kids bring eSports action into town with this LEGO City The Video Game Tournament Truck set: a buildable toy truck, a presenter and 2 minifigures of games
- Trailer side folds down to reveal the game tournament scene with 2 toy computer game stations and giant stadium screens
- Young video game fans can animate the game action on the toy stadium screen and adjust the progress bar of minifigures in competition
- This toy truck features cool accessories including a winner trophy, microphone, mobile phone and game items, such as big fists and a toy sword
- This LEGO City game tournament game is a birthday or everyday gift for kids 7+ years old who love games, extreme sports and truck toys
Size and shelf planning
LEGO lists the main console at approximately 33 cm wide and 22 cm deep. Measure your shelf depth, not just its width: the console, joystick and scene elements need room to read as a group, and the cartridge builds are easier to appreciate when they are not packed tightly against the wall.
Why it differs from the NES
The Atari set is a cartridge-era display with several game references, whereas the NES is a complete console-and-TV tableau centered on a scrolling Mario screen. Atari’s three vignettes provide variety; the NES has a stronger single-scene narrative and a more obvious moving feature. LEGO marks the Atari set retired, so inspect used or resale listings for the joystick, all three cartridges, vignette parts and the hidden-room elements rather than accepting a console-only listing.
Should you buy the LEGO NES or Atari 2600?
| Decision point | NES 71374 | Atari 2600 10306 |
|---|---|---|
| Core nostalgia | 1980s Nintendo living-room setup | Early cartridge-console culture and Atari game imagery |
| Included display pieces | Console, controller, Game Pak and retro TV | Console, joystick, three cartridges and three game vignettes |
| Mechanical feature | Handle-operated scrolling Mario screen | Scene and cartridge display; no comparable scrolling-screen feature is stated |
| Piece count | 2,646 | Not stated on the current product information |
| Status | Retired and hard to find | Retired |
| Choose it if… | You want one iconic Nintendo setup with a moving TV image | You value multiple cartridge-era games and a compact console-focused arrangement |
For a first large retro-console purchase, the NES is the more self-explanatory centerpiece because the television, controller and scrolling screen form one scene. Choose Atari when those three game references and the early-console aesthetic are the reason you collect. In either case, condition and completeness should decide between two similarly priced listings.
5. LEGO Ideas Sonic the Hedgehog Green Hill Zone 21331: best level diorama
Green Hill Zone 21331 translates a recognizable game level into a horizontal 18+ diorama. The set contains 1,125 pieces and includes the loop, bridge, spring and rings associated with the opening Sonic stages. Sonic, Dr. Eggman, Moto Bug and Crabmeat provide the character scale that makes the landscape read as a playable scene rather than a generic green platform.
Display and building experience
The level layout gives you a long, low display profile. It works well on a media console or a shelf where a tall model would be obstructed. Building the terrain, loop and bridge offers a different rhythm from assembling a rectangular console: you are creating a scene with recognizable landmarks and then placing minifigure-scale characters into it.
Buying a retired diorama
LEGO marks the set retired, so condition and resale pricing matter. Ask for photographs of the loop, spring, rings and all four named characters. A listing that supplies only the terrain may be a custom build or an incomplete copy, not the official 21331 set. Because the model’s appeal depends on its complete cast and level features, missing one signature element can materially reduce its display value.

6. LEGO Horizon Forbidden West Tallneck 76989: best modern game-world sculpture
The Horizon Forbidden West Tallneck 76989 takes a different approach from the retro hardware sets. It is a 1,222-piece, 18+ display model of the Tallneck, designed for collectors who want a recognizable game-world machine rather than a replica console. LEGO presents it as a detailed display model and a gift for Horizon fans.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Why it stands apart
The Tallneck’s vertical silhouette creates immediate shelf presence, and its subject represents a contemporary open-world setting instead of 1980s arcade or cartridge nostalgia. It is the right choice when your attachment is to Horizon’s machines, landscape and character design. It is not the right substitute for the NES or Game Boy if your goal is to own a physical recreation of gaming hardware.
What to verify before buying
Availability is more variable than for the currently listed Game Boy, so check the regional LEGO listing and established retailers. Confirm that the listing is for 76989, not a custom model or a similarly named accessory, and ask whether the box, instructions and every structural section are included when buying used.
Where can you still find the LEGO Game Boy set?
Start with the official LEGO product listing, which currently shows Game Boy 72046 available at $59.99. If you shop through a marketplace, search the exact set number and compare the seller’s photographs with the official parts and features: 421 pieces, the stand, the Game Pak slot, both interchangeable Game Paks and the lenticular screens.
- Search by set number: Use “72046,” not only “LEGO Game Boy,” to avoid fan-made MOCs, accessories and unrelated older Nintendo products.
- Confirm edition and condition: Check whether the listing is new, open-box or used, and whether the seller guarantees a complete set.
- Check the contents: Ask specifically about the stand, both Game Paks and the screen elements. A missing interchangeable part changes the display options.
- Compare the total cost: Include shipping, taxes and any premium over LEGO’s listed $59.99 price before deciding that a marketplace copy is a bargain.
- Prefer documented sellers: Use sellers with clear return terms and a history of accurate LEGO listings, particularly when the box seal or photographs are unclear.
Do not assume that every listing titled “Game Boy LEGO set” is the current 18+ 72046. The set number is the quickest way to separate the official product from custom instructions, compatible bricks or incomplete used bundles.

Retired models such as PAC-MAN, NES, Atari and Sonic can be excellent collector pieces, but the purchase decision is as much about verification as nostalgia.
- Match the exact set number: 10323, 71374, 10306 and 21331 identify the official sets discussed here.
- Request a parts inventory or clear photographs: Look for the signature mechanism, screen, cartridges, vignettes, figures and hidden-scene components rather than relying on a generic “complete” label.
- Separate official sets from MOCs: Custom models may use similar names and images but do not have the same instructions, parts inventory or resale history.
- Inspect moving features: For PAC-MAN, test the handle-operated maze and light brick where possible. For the NES, check the scrolling-screen handle. A model can be visually complete but mechanically damaged.
- Price condition, not just rarity: Sealed, complete, open-box and incomplete sets should not be treated as equivalent. A lower price is not a saving if you must source rare replacement elements later.
- Use return protection: Retired-set listings can contain substituted parts or missing minifigures that are difficult to spot in a single photograph.
Which set fits your collector profile?
| Your priority | Best match | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Current availability and low commitment | Game Boy 72046 | LEGO-listed $59.99 price, 421 pieces and compact scale |
| Hands-on mechanical display | PAC-MAN Arcade 10323 | Handle-operated maze, coin-slot light and removable mechanism panel |
| One definitive Nintendo centerpiece | NES 71374 | Console, TV, controller and scrolling Mario scene in one model |
| Atari and early cartridge history | Atari 2600 10306 | Joystick, three cartridges and three game-based vignettes |
| Level design and character scenes | Sonic Green Hill Zone 21331 | Loop, bridge, spring, rings and a complete character lineup |
| Modern open-world game art | Horizon Tallneck 76989 | Tall vertical sculpture rather than a hardware replica |
Final buying advice
Buy the Game Boy 72046 if you want the clearest combination of price, availability, scale and recognizable interaction. Select PAC-MAN when the cabinet silhouette and mechanical reveal justify waiting for a sold-out set. Choose the NES over Atari when you want a complete Nintendo living-room tableau and a scrolling-screen feature; choose Atari when its three cartridge-era game references are the core of your collection. Sonic is the specialist pick for level-diorama fans, while the Tallneck is the strongest modern-world sculpture.
For any retired model, the exact set number, complete parts and working condition matter more than a seller’s nostalgia-based description. Those checks protect both your budget and the display experience once the build is on your shelf.
