For a structured adventure made specifically for two people, choose It Takes Two. Pick Unravel Two for gentler puzzle-platforming, Overcooked! 2 for short, hectic teamwork sessions, or Sackboy: A Big Adventure when colorful 3D platforming matters most. All four are on Steam and support playing together on one PC; their pacing, camera style, difficulty, and ideal group size are very different.
Quick answer: which game should two people buy?
These games are alternatives to LEGO co-op in different ways rather than interchangeable copies. The table separates the features Steam lists from the kind of experience each feature creates.

The closest overall substitute depends on what you mean by “LEGO-like.” If you mean a two-person campaign in which both players must coordinate, It Takes Two is the most direct answer. If you mean approachable platforming with objects to manipulate, Sackboy and Unravel Two are better matches. If the appeal is laughing while a couch team tries to complete a simple task under pressure, Overcooked! 2 is the stronger choice even though it is not a platformer.

LEGO games commonly combine accessible controls, a shared screen, collectible or puzzle-driven levels, and a cooperative rhythm that lets two people contribute without requiring identical skill. The four alternatives split those ingredients across different designs.

Campaign or repeatable rounds
It Takes Two and Unravel Two are built around moving through a campaign together. Their appeal grows when both players want to see what happens next and solve the next obstacle as a pair. Overcooked! 2 is better when you want self-contained attempts that can be replayed, while Sackboy emphasizes a broad platforming adventure that can accommodate two or more people.
Shared screen versus split screen
Steam lists shared/split-screen co-op for all four games. That label means the game can keep both players on one display or divide the view when their positions require it; the exact camera behavior is game-specific. A shared screen is usually easier for conversation, while a split view can let partners explore separate spaces without one character dragging the other off camera.
Playing on one PC or over the internet
Local co-op is listed for every title. Online co-op is listed for It Takes Two, Overcooked! 2, and Sackboy: A Big Adventure; it is not listed for Unravel Two. Remote Play Together is listed for the first three games and Unravel Two, so a friend can participate remotely through Steam’s streaming feature when the host owns and runs the game. If you are buying specifically for two distant players, check the store’s current feature panel before checkout because platform support can change.

How much pressure do you want?
- Low pressure: Start with Unravel Two. Its focus is traversal and puzzles rather than a timer-driven team routine.
- Moderate, story-led variety: Choose It Takes Two. Its two-player structure makes cooperation the central challenge.
- High pressure: Choose Overcooked! 2. Communication and quick reassignment matter more than precision platforming.
- Platforming first: Choose Sackboy: A Big Adventure for its 3D presentation and larger local group option.
It Takes Two: the best dedicated two-player campaign
It Takes Two is the safest recommendation when two people want an adventure that assumes both players are present. Steam describes inviting a friend to join for free with Friend’s Pass and working together through a wide variety of disruptive gameplay challenges. The important distinction is structural: this is not a single-player game with a small co-op add-on. Its campaign is designed around two participants, so each person regularly has a meaningful role.
Why it feels closest to a cooperative LEGO adventure
The strongest overlap is the constant need to notice what the other player is doing. Instead of simply following one powerful character, both players advance by coordinating actions and adapting to new situations. That makes it a good replacement for a household that enjoys solving environmental problems together, taking turns, and discovering new mechanics as the story moves forward.
Rank #2
- Fly freely through the galaxy to discover many of the saga's most legendary locations
- Switch between films at will
- This is the ultimate LEGO Star Wars experience
The variety also helps when two players have different tastes. One section can reward movement, another can ask for timing, and another can require communication. You do not need to agree on one repeated activity for the entire session. That variety is the reason to pick this game over a more focused puzzle-platformer.
Who should choose it
- Two players who want one coherent campaign rather than a collection of short competitive rounds.
- Partners or friends willing to communicate when the game introduces a new task.
- Players who may be in different locations, because Steam lists online co-op and Remote Play Together.
Who may prefer another game
It is a poor fit if you want four people on one couch, a calm pace, or a platforming-only experience. Its identity comes from changing challenges, so anyone looking for one narrowly defined mechanic should consider Unravel Two or Sackboy instead.

Steam lists local co-op, online co-op, shared/split-screen co-op, and Remote Play Together. It also lists full controller support, making a two-player PC controller setup a sensible way to prepare for local play. If you are using Remote Play Together, test both input devices before starting the campaign; the host’s machine is doing the rendering and receiving both players’ commands.
Unravel Two: the gentlest puzzle-platforming option
Unravel Two is the choice for players who want cooperation without the frantic pace of a kitchen or the constant tonal shifts of a larger action adventure. Steam’s description centers on two Yarnys forming a bond in seamless local co-op. That premise communicates the intended scale: two characters, one shared route, and problems solved through positioning and timing.
What makes its co-op different
The game is built around traversal and puzzles. Partners generally need to read the environment, decide who moves first, and use each character’s position to make progress. That creates a conversational rhythm: look, try an approach, adjust, and continue. It is a useful alternative when one player is new to games because the emphasis is on understanding the space rather than reacting to a rapidly changing service station.
Rank #3
- Play through all nine Star Wars saga films in a brand-new LEGO videogame unlike any other.
- Experience fun-filled adventures, whimsical humour, and the freedom to fully immerse yourself in the LEGO Star Wars universe like never before.
- Players have the freedom to seamlessly travel to any planet, in any order, at any time.
- Features hundreds of playable characters from throughout the galaxy. Choose from a legion of heroes like Luke Skywalker, Qui-Gonn Jinn, Chewbacca, Leia Organa, and Poe Dameron or turn to the dark side as Darth Vader, Kylo Ren, Darth Maul, Emperor Palpatine, and more.
- Whether on land or in space, hundreds of vehicles from across the galaxy are yours to command. Jump to light speed in the Millennium Falcon, fly the T-47 airspeeder as you take down AT-AT walkers on Hoth, and battle First Order TIE fighters in Resistance X-wings.
Best audience
- Families and friends who prefer a softer presentation.
- Players who enjoy discussing solutions more than chasing a score.
- Pairs sharing one screen and one set of speakers.
Important connectivity limitation
Steam lists local co-op, shared/split-screen co-op, and Remote Play Together, but it does not list native online co-op. That makes it a strong choice for two people in the same room or for a Steam Remote Play session, not a straightforward pick when each player expects a separate online copy and a conventional online lobby.

When it is a better purchase than It Takes Two
Choose Unravel Two when the tone and pace matter more than breadth. It gives you a focused puzzle-platforming identity, whereas It Takes Two is intentionally more varied. If your ideal evening is a few thoughtful obstacles followed by a natural stopping point, the gentler design is likely to be more comfortable.
Overcooked! 2: the chaotic four-player alternative
Overcooked! 2 is not a platforming substitute, but it captures one reason people enjoy co-op games: two people must communicate clearly while a simple shared objective becomes difficult under pressure. Steam calls it chaotic cooking action and supports couch or online teams of up to four players.
Why two players may enjoy it
With two people, each player can take ownership of several jobs and call out changes as the situation develops. The fun comes from coordination: deciding who handles which task, noticing when a plan has broken down, and recovering before the round ends. That makes it excellent for short sessions or for a group that wants immediate feedback after every attempt.
How it differs from LEGO-style platforming
There is no equivalent of exploring a 3D world as a pair. The emphasis is arcade-like and schedule-driven rather than discovery-driven. If one player dislikes timers, repeated attempts, or noisy communication, this is probably the wrong recommendation. Conversely, if your group often grows beyond two, the four-player local support gives it an advantage over games built around a pair.

Online and local flexibility
Steam lists local co-op, online co-op, shared/split-screen co-op, Remote Play Together, and four-player local play. That combination makes it the most flexible choice in this list for changing group sizes. Decide whether you want a focused two-person session or a larger team before buying; the game is not balanced around being exclusively a two-player campaign.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Sackboy: A Big Adventure: the closest 3D platforming substitute
Sackboy: A Big Adventure is the strongest pick when colorful 3D platforming is the main requirement. Steam presents it as a large 3D multiplayer platforming adventure and lists local and online co-op, shared/split-screen co-op, and four-player local play.
Why platforming fans should start here
The core appeal is movement through crafted 3D stages with other players visible in the same adventure. That gives a pair the sense of traveling through a world together, which is closer to a traditional family platformer than the task-management format of Overcooked! 2. It also leaves room for a third or fourth local player if your household’s group changes.
Trade-offs for a two-person household
Because the campaign supports larger groups, it is not as narrowly tailored to a pair as It Takes Two or Unravel Two. Two players can still enjoy it, but the design does not make “exactly two” the defining premise. Choose it for the platforming format and presentation, not because it replicates a dedicated two-character structure.

Pick Sackboy if you want a more overtly 3D platforming adventure and the possibility of four local players. Pick Unravel Two if solving traversal puzzles at a calmer pace is more important than having a broad multiplayer platforming framework.

Local, online, and Remote Play Together: a practical decision guide
Before buying, decide where the second player will be and how many controllers you can connect. The store feature labels answer most of the compatibility question.
Two people at the same PC
- Open the game’s Steam store page and confirm that “Local Co-op” appears in the feature list.
- Check whether the page specifies shared/split-screen behavior if display layout matters to you.
- Connect and test both input devices before launching a long session. For It Takes Two, Steam explicitly lists full controller support; do not assume that every game uses identical controller mappings.
- Start the game and use its local multiplayer option. If the second input is not detected, close other controller-mapping tools temporarily and reconnect the device before relaunching.
Two people in different locations
- For native online play, choose one of the titles whose Steam feature list includes online co-op: It Takes Two, Overcooked! 2, or Sackboy: A Big Adventure.
- If you plan to use Steam Remote Play Together, select a title whose feature list includes it; all four games in this guide are listed with that feature.
- The host should launch the game, open the Steam overlay, and send the session invitation through the available friend-invite control. The guest accepts the invitation and checks that their input is assigned to the second player.
- If latency makes timing difficult, prefer the calmer puzzle format of Unravel Two or play locally. Fast tasks in Overcooked! 2 are less forgiving of a delayed connection.
More than two players
Only Overcooked! 2 and Sackboy: A Big Adventure list four-player local play in the supplied Steam features. If a third or fourth person is likely to join, choose one of those instead of treating a two-player campaign as a group game.
Side-by-side buying decision
| If your priority is… | Choose | Reason | Compromise |
|---|---|---|---|
| A campaign designed around exactly two participants | It Takes Two | Its cooperative structure is the central premise, with local, online, split/shared-screen, and Remote Play Together support. | It is not the calmest or most narrowly focused option. |
| Gentle puzzles and traversal | Unravel Two | Two Yarnys and a puzzle-platforming focus create a quieter partnership. | Steam does not list native online co-op. |
| High-energy teamwork or four local players | Overcooked! 2 | Its cooking format turns communication into the main mechanic and supports teams of up to four. | It is an arcade cooking game, not a platforming adventure. |
| Colorful 3D platforming | Sackboy: A Big Adventure | Steam describes a large 3D multiplayer platforming adventure and lists four-player local play. | The design is for broader multiplayer groups, not only two. |
Common purchase mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming every “co-op” label means the same thing
Local co-op, online co-op, shared/split-screen co-op, and Remote Play Together describe different ways to connect. Read the complete feature list rather than relying on a single “multiplayer” word in a store summary.
Buying a four-player game for a pair who want a story
A larger player cap does not make a game a better two-player campaign. Overcooked! 2 and Sackboy are sensible when flexibility matters; It Takes Two is the more deliberate purchase when the pair wants the game to be built around them.
Ignoring display and input constraints
Shared-screen play keeps both players visible but may restrict where each can go. Split-screen gives more independence at the cost of dividing the display. Verify that your PC can connect both input devices and that the screen is large enough for the chosen layout.
Treating storefront reviews as scientific rankings
The percentages in the comparison table are Steam’s English-language storefront review snapshots from the 2026 capture. They are useful signals of buyer sentiment on that storefront, not controlled tests, sales figures, or measurements of audience size.
Final recommendation
Buy It Takes Two if two people want the most purpose-built cooperative adventure. Choose Unravel Two for a gentler puzzle-platforming evening, Overcooked! 2 for hectic teamwork and up to four local players, and Sackboy: A Big Adventure for the closest 3D platforming-oriented alternative with room for a larger group. Confirm the current Steam feature panel and your preferred connection method before checkout, then match the game’s pace to the kind of co-op time you actually have.
