You do not need an original Nintendo Entertainment System to play NES games legally. For most people who already own a compatible Switch-family console, Nintendo Switch Online is the simplest official option: open the eShop with an active membership and download Nintendo’s NES application. If you want a dedicated box connected directly to a television, the licensed NES Classic Edition is the main standalone alternative, although it is an older product and is now normally bought through resale channels.

Your practical choice comes down to three things: whether you already own a compatible Switch, whether you prefer subscription access or a self-contained console, and how important an original-style controller is to you. Nintendo also sells an official NES controller accessory for the Switch collection, but it is a different product from the NES Classic Edition controller.

Quick comparison

Option What you need Payment model Library model TV connection Offline considerations Availability
Nintendo Switch Online NES collection A compatible Switch-family console and an active Nintendo Switch Online membership Recurring membership; no current individual NES-game purchase plan Nintendo-curated collection; exact titles can vary by region and hardware generation Use the Switch dock and its normal TV connection, where supported Nintendo says classic collections can be played for up to seven consecutive days without reconnecting online Digital service accessed through Nintendo eShop
NES Classic Edition The mini console, a compatible HDMI television, USB power, and its bundled controller One-time hardware purchase; current price is not stated by Nintendo in the cited material and resale prices vary Fixed built-in library rather than a subscription catalog HDMI Self-contained hardware; no membership is required Older product; verify stock, condition, region, accessories, and seller authenticity
Official NES controller for Nintendo Classics A Switch setup using Nintendo’s NES collection Separate accessory purchase; current price is not stated here Does not provide games by itself Uses the connected Switch system Follows the Switch collection’s access rules Not interchangeable with the NES Classic Edition controller

There is no current official price or library-count figure established in the available Nintendo material, so be cautious with listings that present an old launch price or an exact “complete” catalog as if it were current everywhere.

Option 1: Nintendo Switch Online

What the service provides

Nintendo Switch Online is the most straightforward legal route when you already have a compatible Switch-family console. The NES games are delivered through Nintendo’s supported classic-game software rather than through an original cartridge or a third-party emulator. Nintendo’s support documentation describes ongoing access to classic collections for active members. Its list includes NES and Super NES collections, with additional systems associated with the Expansion Pack tier.

#1 Best Overall
Nintendo Entertainment System: NES Classic Edition
  • The system comes bundled with: an HDMI cable
  • an AC adapter
  • one NES Classic Controller
  • and all 30 games, installed and ready-to-play.
  • E10+ w/ Mild Violence

The exact NES catalog and availability can vary by region and by the Switch hardware generation that supports the service. Check the current Nintendo support information for your country before subscribing or assuming that a particular title is included.

How to start the NES collection

  1. Turn on the compatible Switch-family console and connect it to the internet.
  2. Open Nintendo eShop.
  3. Select the user profile that has an active Nintendo Switch Online membership.
  4. Find the Nintendo Switch Online NES collection application and download it if it is not already installed.
  5. Launch the application and choose a game from the available NES catalog.
  6. Connect a controller that suits you. The standard Switch controllers work with the application, while Nintendo’s separate NES controller accessory is intended to provide a more traditional NES-style layout.

The eShop step matters because access is tied to the user profile and membership status. Signing in with a profile that does not have the required membership can prevent the collection from opening even if another profile on the console has paid for service.

Subscription access is not the same as buying a game

Nintendo says there are currently no plans to make the classic NES and Super NES games available individually outside Nintendo Switch Online. In practical terms, the service is a subscription-access model: you can play the included games while the membership and Nintendo’s service terms allow it, rather than purchasing each classic as a permanent standalone download.

That distinction is important when comparing the service with an old cartridge collection. A subscription can be cheaper and more convenient if you want many games, but you do not own an individual digital NES release that can be used independently of the service.

Internet and temporary offline play

Nintendo’s support page says the classic collections can be played for up to seven consecutive days without reconnecting online. This is useful for travel or a short period without internet access, but it is not permanent offline ownership. Reconnect before that period expires so the console can verify the membership and refresh access.

If you are planning to use the service at a cabin, in a hotel, or on a long trip, open the application while online before leaving and treat the seven-day period as a maximum stated by Nintendo, not a guarantee that every situation will work indefinitely. Changes to membership status, account sign-in, or service availability can still affect access.

Strengths and trade-offs

  • Convenience: no original NES, cartridge collection, upscaler, or aging AV cable is required.
  • Curated software: games come through Nintendo’s supported collection rather than unauthorized ROM files.
  • Broader value: an active membership can also provide access to other classic collections and online features where Nintendo supports them.
  • Controller flexibility: you can begin with the controllers you already own and add Nintendo’s NES-style accessory later.
  • Recurring access: ending the membership ends the normal entitlement to the collection.
  • Catalog limits: not every NES release is necessarily included, and availability can differ by country or system generation.

Option 2: NES Classic Edition

What is in the package

The NES Classic Edition is licensed Nintendo hardware designed as a small, self-contained console. Nintendo’s instruction manual identifies the included mini console, a controller, an HDMI cable, and a USB power cable. The system connects directly to a modern HDMI television and does not require an original NES console or a collection of cartridges.

Its built-in library is fixed. You do not use a subscription to unlock the games, and the device is not a general-purpose cartridge reader. That makes it attractive to someone who wants a dedicated plug-and-play experience rather than an account-based service.

  • Does not include: Commemorative poster, USB plug.

Basic setup

  1. Place the NES Classic Edition near the television and within reach of a USB power source.
  2. Connect the console’s HDMI output to an open HDMI input on the television.
  3. Connect the supplied USB power cable to an appropriate USB power source as described in the manual.
  4. Plug the bundled controller into the console’s controller port.
  5. Select the television’s matching HDMI input.
  6. Use the console’s power control to start it. Use the reset control when you need to return to the system menu or follow the manual’s reset procedure.

The exact location and behavior of the controls are documented in Nintendo’s manual. Keep that manual or a legitimate copy with the console, especially if you buy used and the seller does not include the original paperwork.

Why availability requires extra care

The NES Classic Edition is an older product. Current retail stock, used pricing, included accessories, regional packaging, and seller authenticity are all variable. Nintendo’s original launch-era price is historical and should not be treated as a fair current resale price.

Before buying, check that the listing clearly identifies the NES Classic Edition rather than a generic mini console or an unauthorized clone. Confirm that the console, HDMI cable, USB power cable, and controller are present, and ask whether the system has been tested. A missing controller or an unverified power setup can erase the convenience advantage of the bundle.

Who should choose it

Choose the NES Classic Edition when you want a single-purpose box that can be connected to an HDMI television without maintaining a Nintendo Switch Online membership. It is also a sensible fit for a shared living-room setup where you want the same built-in menu and controller available to everyone.

Its limitations are equally clear: the library cannot be assumed to match the full NES release history, the hardware is no longer a current-generation product, and buying used introduces risks that do not apply to a digital eShop download.

Option 3: Nintendo’s official NES controller for Switch

Nintendo offers a separate NES controller designed for Nintendo Entertainment System – Nintendo Classics on Switch. It is an accessory for the Switch collection, not a console and not a source of games by itself.

The controller can make games that depend on a simple directional pad and two face buttons feel closer to the original experience. It is particularly useful if you dislike adapting an NES layout to a modern dual-stick controller.

Do not assume that the accessory can be swapped between systems. Nintendo explicitly says the official Switch NES controller is not interchangeable with the NES Classic Edition controller. Buy the controller for the platform you actually intend to use, and follow Nintendo’s pairing or connection instructions for that platform.

What counts as a legal approach

Use Nintendo-distributed software and licensed hardware

The clearest legal path is to use Nintendo’s own Switch collection or licensed Nintendo hardware such as the NES Classic Edition. Those routes avoid downloading game images from unknown sources and avoid modifying a device to bypass its security controls.

Products and practices Nintendo identifies as unauthorized

Nintendo describes circumvention products as devices or software that bypass Nintendo security measures to enable unauthorized copies or unauthorized ROM use. Its examples include piracy cartridges, game copiers, USB piracy sticks, mod chips, and related software. Nintendo also states that unauthorized video-game emulators encourage the use of pirate copies.

That warning is aimed at unauthorized distribution and circumvention, not at the general idea of software emulation as a technical method. The legal status of making a personal backup, downloading a ROM you do not own, or using a particular emulator can depend on your country, how the copy was obtained, and what you do with it. Nintendo’s policy is not a substitute for local legal advice. If you want the least ambiguous route, stay with Nintendo-distributed games and licensed products.

How to choose between the two main routes

Choose Nintendo Switch Online if…

  • You already own a compatible Switch-family console.
  • You want a curated collection instead of one fixed hardware library.
  • You are comfortable with recurring membership access.
  • You value portability and the ability to use the same console for modern Switch games.
  • You may use supported online features in addition to the NES games.
  • You can reconnect the console at least once within Nintendo’s stated seven-day offline window.

Choose the NES Classic Edition if…

  • You want a dedicated HDMI device with no membership requirement.
  • You prefer a fixed menu that works independently of a Switch account.
  • You are willing to verify a used unit, its accessories, and the seller.
  • You want the bundled controller and a simple living-room setup.

Choose the official Switch NES controller if…

  • You have selected Nintendo Switch Online but want a more original-style control layout.
  • You understand that the controller does not add games or replace the NES Classic Edition controller.

Costs, ownership, and availability

The available official material does not establish a current membership price, a current NES Classic Edition resale price, or a definitive number of games in every regional catalog. Those figures change by country, promotion, hardware generation, and seller. Check the Nintendo eShop for the membership terms that apply to your account and compare used hardware listings only after confirming what is included.

Think of the cost in two categories:

  • Recurring cost: Nintendo Switch Online membership. You retain access while the membership is active and the collection remains available under Nintendo’s service terms.
  • Upfront cost: NES Classic Edition hardware, or a separate official NES controller if you use Switch Online. Used hardware prices are market prices, not a current Nintendo MSRP.

A low listed price is not automatically a bargain. For a used NES Classic Edition, the condition of the console, controller, HDMI cable, USB cable, packaging, and seller return policy can matter more than a small difference in asking price.

TV setup and troubleshooting

If the Switch collection will not open

  1. Confirm that the console is connected to the internet.
  2. Open Nintendo eShop with the user profile that holds the active Nintendo Switch Online membership.
  3. Check that the NES collection application is installed and updated.
  4. Reconnect online and relaunch the application if the console has been offline for several days.
  5. Verify that your membership has not expired and that you are using a hardware generation and region supported by the current Nintendo service.

If the NES Classic Edition shows no picture

  1. Confirm that the television is set to the HDMI input used by the console.
  2. Reseat both ends of the HDMI cable.
  3. Try another HDMI input or a known-good HDMI cable.
  4. Check that the USB power cable is firmly connected to the console and the power source.
  5. Use the console’s power and reset controls according to Nintendo’s manual.

If a used unit still fails after those checks, document the problem before opening or modifying anything. A seller return may be safer than attempting an unofficial repair that could affect authenticity or future support.

If the controller does not respond

For the NES Classic Edition, verify that the bundled controller is connected to the console’s controller port. For the Switch accessory, make sure you bought the Switch NES controller rather than a NES Classic Edition controller; Nintendo says the two are not interchangeable. Then follow the platform-specific connection instructions and test the controller in the NES application.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming every NES game is included in the Switch collection.
  • Treating a Nintendo Switch Online entitlement as permanent ownership of individual games.
  • Expecting seven-day offline play to mean unlimited offline access.
  • Buying an unverified “NES Classic” listing without checking the included cables and controller.
  • Using a Switch NES controller with the NES Classic Edition, or the reverse.
  • Downloading ROM files or buying circumvention hardware because a listing calls it an emulator.
  • Applying a historical launch price to a current resale transaction.

Bottom line

For a reader who already owns a compatible Switch-family console, Nintendo Switch Online is the easiest official answer: it provides Nintendo’s NES collection through the eShop, requires an active membership, and supports temporary offline play with periodic reconnection. For a subscription-free, dedicated HDMI setup, the licensed NES Classic Edition is the alternative, but its age and resale market make seller and accessory checks essential. The official Switch NES controller can improve the feel of the first option, while remaining incompatible with the NES Classic Edition controller.
