A normal PlayStation Network account and the console’s official Store are all you need. The important distinction is access: a free-to-play download is normally available without a subscription, while a monthly game or catalogue title remains playable only under the conditions of the relevant PlayStation Plus plan.
1. Download games marked “Free” in the PlayStation Store
The most direct route is the official PlayStation Store’s free-to-play section. On your PS5, open PlayStation Store, select the search or browse controls, choose the PS5 platform filter, and set the price filter to Free. Open a game’s product page and select Download or Add to Library. “Free” means the listed download has no purchase price; it does not mean every item, character, expansion or cosmetic inside the game costs nothing.

The Store catalogue changes by country and date. Current listings have included Roblox, Marvel Rivals, Apex Legends for PS5, Overwatch, Fall Guys, ASTRO’s PLAYROOM, VALORANT and Warframe. Treat those names as a snapshot rather than a permanent catalogue: a title can be added, removed, replaced by a PS4 version, or restricted in a particular region.

- A legitimate download delivered through Sony’s servers.
- Updates, patches and account licensing handled by the normal PS5 system.
- Access to the game’s free base content, subject to the publisher’s terms.
What “free” does not promise
- Optional purchases such as currency, costumes, battle passes or story packs may be offered.
- Some games require a separate publisher account, age verification or acceptance of additional terms.
- Online features can be changed, suspended or closed by the publisher.
2. Use free-to-play games for ongoing access
Free-to-play games are the best choice when you want a full, repeatable game rather than a short demo. You download the client at no charge and the publisher funds ongoing development through optional purchases, season passes, advertising or other services. The base game can remain available for as long as the publisher supports it, but it is not a guarantee that every mode or server will exist indefinitely.

Examples available on PlayStation platforms have included Fortnite, Apex Legends, Call of Duty: Warzone, Roblox, Marvel Rivals, Overwatch, Fall Guys, VALORANT and Warframe. Check the PS5 Store page for the current version before downloading; some listings contain both PS4 and PS5 editions.
Do you need PlayStation Plus?
PlayStation’s support guidance says that most free-to-play games, including Fortnite, Apex Legends and Call of Duty: Warzone, do not require a membership for online play. That exemption applies to the game’s free-to-play online modes, not automatically to paid expansions or other games on the same console. A publisher can still require its own account, and Sony’s normal account, age and parental-control rules continue to apply.
Keeping costs under control
- On the product page, check whether an item is labelled an add-on, currency pack or upgrade rather than the base game.
- Use console spending limits or require a password at checkout if children use the account.
- Disable automatic purchases and review payment methods before handing over the controller.
- Remember that a “free” seasonal pass can contain paid tiers; the free tier is separate from the optional upgrade.
3. Claim PlayStation Plus monthly games
PlayStation Plus Essential, Extra and Premium plans include monthly games. This is a subscription benefit, not a permanent purchase. During each monthly offer period, sign in to the subscribed account, open the PlayStation Plus area, select each included game and choose Add to Library. Once claimed, the game is associated with that account, but it remains playable only while the membership is active and the title’s licence is still valid.
How to claim a monthly game on PS5
- Open PlayStation Plus from the PS5 home screen or PlayStation Store.
- Choose the current Monthly Games section.
- Open each game you want and select Add to Library before the monthly offer changes.
- Download immediately or return later through Game Library > Your Collection.
- Keep the subscription active when you want to launch the claimed title.
Adding a title to the library is essential. If you wait until a new month begins, the previous offer may no longer be claimable even if you were subscribed during part of the earlier period. Monthly games can also leave the service or be replaced, so keep your account and console licences synchronized.

What happens when Plus expires
The game is not deleted automatically, but its licence is locked until you renew an eligible membership. Renewing the same account normally restores access to previously claimed monthly games whose licences remain available. A different account’s subscription does not unlock another account’s claimed games.
4. Access the Game Catalog with Extra
PlayStation Plus Extra includes the monthly games benefit and a larger Game Catalog. You can download and play listed PS4 and PS5 titles for as long as your Extra membership is active and each title remains in the catalogue. This is useful for sampling many games without buying them individually, but it is rental-like access rather than ownership.
Catalogues have removal dates
A catalogue title can display a removal date. After that date, the game may stop launching even if it is installed on your SSD. Your save data can remain on the console or in cloud storage, but access to the game itself depends on purchasing it separately or finding it through another valid licence. Check the title page and the “leaving soon” notices before starting a long campaign.
5. Use Premium for Classics, trials and streaming
Premium includes everything in the lower tiers, plus a Classics Catalog, selected game trials and cloud streaming where the feature is supported. Classics are also subscription access: they can leave the service, and availability differs by country. A trial is a time-limited or otherwise restricted opportunity to play a selected game before deciding whether to buy it. The Store or PlayStation Plus page shows the applicable duration and eligibility for each trial.

How trials differ from demos
- Demo: a developer-provided section of a game, often with a fixed level, chapter or time limit, available without buying the full product.
- Premium trial: access attached to an eligible PlayStation Plus Premium account, with the exact time limit and catalogue determined by the listing.
- Full subscription title: the complete listed game while your membership and the catalogue licence remain valid.
Do not assume a demo includes the full game, that progress transfers to a purchase, or that a trial is available in every country. Read the individual listing for the duration, edition and save-transfer conditions.

Requirements before you start
- A PS5 connected to the internet and signed in to a PlayStation Network account.
- Sufficient internal or expanded-storage space for the download and updates.
- The correct regional Store account; catalogue and age eligibility can differ by country.
- Payment controls configured if the game offers optional purchases.
- An active Essential, Extra or Premium membership for subscription-only benefits.
A subscription is not required merely to create a library entry for a free-to-play game. It is required when the licence comes from a Plus monthly, catalogue, Classics or Premium-trial benefit.
How to avoid illegal or unsafe “free game” offers
Jailbreaking, pirated PKG files, unauthorised account sharing, “free code” generators and unofficial download sites are not legitimate alternatives. They can expose your account credentials, install malware, invalidate licences, corrupt saves or lead to account and console sanctions. They also bypass the updates and entitlement checks that make online play work.
Use the Store listing as the deciding test: if the title is not offered through the official Store, your own library, or a current PlayStation Plus entitlement, do not install it. Never enter your PSN password into a site promising codes, duplicated accounts or a bypass for a locked game. A legitimate promotion will identify the publisher, the region, the offer dates and the redemption method inside an official PlayStation or publisher channel.

Troubleshooting common access problems
The game shows a price instead of Free
Confirm that you selected the PS5 edition and the correct regional account. A paid deluxe edition, upgrade bundle or in-game currency pack may be displayed beside the free base client. Return to the game’s editions list and choose the item explicitly labelled Free.
A claimed Plus game has a padlock
Check that you are signed in to the account that claimed the game and that its Essential, Extra or Premium membership is active. If the subscription is active, open Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Restore Licences, then restart the console and test the title again. A game that has left a catalogue is not restored by this step; it needs a current entitlement.
Online play asks for Plus
Verify that you launched the free-to-play version rather than a paid multiplayer product or an add-on. Most free-to-play games are exempt, but the exemption does not cover every game, mode or commercial expansion. Check the game’s Store page and the publisher’s current support notice.

Store catalogues and trials are region-specific. Do not create accounts with false details or buy grey-market codes to bypass a restriction. Use the Store for your actual account region and look for an officially listed alternative.
A trial or demo has disappeared
Trials can expire, reach a usage limit or be withdrawn. Demos can also be removed or replaced with a newer edition. Search the current Store listing rather than relying on an old library shortcut.
Ways to get more value without breaking the rules
- Check the Free-to-Play section before paying for an online game; the same genre may have a no-cost alternative.
- Add every monthly Plus game to your library during its offer period, even if you will not download it immediately.
- Use the Extra catalogue’s removal notices to finish short games first and avoid losing progress to a delisting.
- Try a demo or Premium trial before buying a large download, especially when storage is limited.
- Keep automatic updates enabled for online games, because outdated clients may not connect.
- Review parental controls and purchase authentication before allowing another user to browse free listings.
What you can and cannot keep
A free-to-play download does not become a paid ownership licence simply because you installed it; your access follows the publisher’s service and account rules. A monthly game added to your library is available again when you renew an eligible Plus membership, but it is not playable during a lapse. Extra, Premium and Classics titles are tied to the catalogue and can stop working after removal. Demos and trials provide only the scope and duration stated on their product pages.
For a game you want to own permanently, the legal options are to purchase it, redeem an authorised promotion that grants a permanent licence, or use a free-to-play title whose service remains available. No jailbreak is needed, and modifying the console does not create a lawful ownership right.
