For U.S. viewers, the leading legal free live-TV options to compare are Sling Freestream, Pluto TV, Tubi, The Roku Channel, Xumo Play, Plex, and Samsung TV Plus. They offer free, ad-supported streaming, but the mix of live channels and on-demand shows, account requirements, device support, and availability varies. There is no single best choice for every viewer: start with the channels you want and check the service’s official lineup and device pages before installing.
Which free live-TV services should you compare?
These services are a useful shortlist, not a ranked list. The available official details are strongest for Sling Freestream and Xumo Play; the current lineups and compatibility details for the other candidates should be confirmed on their own service pages.

| Service | What to know |
|---|---|
| Sling Freestream | Sling describes it as an ad-supported service with live channels and on-demand programming. It says an account is not required for viewing; signing in adds personalization features. See Sling’s Freestream information. |
| Xumo Play | Xumo publishes device and territory support details. Its geographic limits include access outside the United States only through specified Canadian and UK provider devices. See device availability and geographic availability. |
| Plex | Plex describes free live-TV channels and a customizable channel guide. The details available here do not establish its full current lineup, device list, or geographic coverage. Check Plex’s live-TV overview. |
| Pluto TV | A recent secondary guide includes Pluto TV among U.S. free live-TV options; verify current channels and device support with Pluto TV directly. |
| Tubi | A recent secondary guide includes Tubi among U.S. free live-TV options; verify current channels and device support with Tubi directly. |
| The Roku Channel | A recent secondary guide includes The Roku Channel among U.S. free live-TV options; verify current channels and device support with Roku directly. |

The secondary guide is useful for identifying services to compare, not for establishing current channel counts, compatibility, or which service is best. Check each provider’s current official information rather than relying on a fixed channel-count claim: lineups change.
How to choose the right service
- Start with must-have channels or genres. Search each provider’s current lineup for the specific programming you want; a large overall channel count does not guarantee that it includes a particular channel.
- Check the device you will use. Confirm that the service supports your TV, streaming player, phone, or computer. Xumo’s device list includes Amazon Fire TV, Android and Google TV devices, desktop, Hisense and Sony smart TVs, iPhone and iPad, Roku devices, Samsung TVs (with a stated limitation for 2016 models), VIZIO SmartCast, Xfinity and Xumo devices, and certain Canadian and UK provider devices. Its support page was updated November 12, 2024, so confirm current compatibility.
- Confirm where it works. Xumo says its service is available in the United States, in Canada through Rogers and Shaw Ignite TV devices, and in the United Kingdom through Sky Glass and Stream devices only; it restricts access from other territories. Those limits apply to Xumo, not necessarily to the other services.
- Decide whether you want to sign in. Sling says basic Freestream viewing does not require an account. Optional sign-in enables features such as favorites, profiles, and parental controls. Requirements for other services may differ.
- Consider your tolerance for ads. Sling explicitly calls Freestream ad-supported. Check each provider’s own description for its current viewing terms; do not assume free means ad-free.
Do free streaming apps include local broadcast channels?
Not necessarily. A streaming app delivers programming over the internet; an antenna receives over-the-air broadcasts from nearby stations. Which stations an antenna can receive, and how reliably, depends on distance from broadcast towers, terrain, and obstructions such as buildings or trees. Sling’s antenna FAQ explains these factors.

We will provide professional service and a satisfactory solution for you.
An antenna is an optional route to local broadcasts, not a requirement for using free streaming apps, and it does not provide internet-based FAST channels. If you want local stations, check reception in your area and confirm that any equipment you plan to use is compatible. Sling says an AirTV adapter is needed to add local channels to Sling’s guide in the setup described in its FAQ; that is a particular Sling use case, not a general requirement for streaming services.
