The service provides official NES, Super NES and Game Boy libraries; the Expansion Pack adds Nintendo 64, SEGA Genesis, Game Boy Advance and Virtual Boy collections, while Nintendo GameCube Classics are offered only on Switch 2. If you want to own games instead of keeping a subscription, buy individually sold Switch titles, packaged collections or physical game cards. A Wii or Wii U remains useful for legitimately owned discs played offline, but neither console is a reliable route to new browser-game content.
Why the old Wii browser-game route is no longer dependable
The Wii Shop Channel closed permanently
Nintendo says the Wii Shop Channel closed on January 30, 2019. New Wii content can no longer be purchased through that storefront. Nintendo also warned that redownload and transfer services would eventually end, so a purchase that was once downloadable is not a dependable foundation for a new library.

Wii U online functionality has also ended
Nintendo ended online play and related online functionality for Wii U software on April 8, 2024. This affects network features that depended on Nintendo’s servers, not merely the ability to browse a particular game site.
What still makes a Wii or Wii U useful
A console with legitimately owned discs can still be a good preservation machine for offline play. You can use the hardware, controllers and physical games already in your collection without relying on a closed storefront. That is a different use case from finding new browser games: the available software is limited to what you already own or can lawfully obtain in physical form, and legacy network features should not be assumed to work.

- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
Why unofficial replacement services deserve caution
Nintendo states that unofficial services imitating Wii U network features are unsupported and may create unexpected security risks. A fan server or browser portal may be technically interesting, but its licensing, data practices, maintenance and jurisdictional status can vary. “Free” access does not establish that the underlying games are licensed.
Legal alternatives at a glance
| Alternative | Legal basis | Cost pattern | Internet dependence | Best for | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch + Nintendo Switch Online | Official Nintendo software and subscription | Console plus recurring membership | Periodic validation may be required | Broadest official retro catalogue | Subscription access ends if membership lapses |
| Nintendo Switch individual games or packaged collections | Licensed eShop or physical releases | Pay per title | Usually lower dependence after download; verify each title | Ownership and focused game choices | Catalogue and region vary |
| Used Wii/Wii U with owned discs | Legitimate physical ownership | Used hardware and discs | Primarily offline | Preserving an existing collection | Library is limited to the discs you can lawfully obtain |
| Unofficial fan servers or browser portals | Rights vary by project and jurisdiction | Often free, but unsupported | Usually online | Technical experimentation | Nintendo does not support network imitators; security and rights are uncertain |
Compare the options by licensing, whether the exact game you want is available, hardware expense, subscription dependence, offline operation, multiplayer support and regional availability. Those criteria matter more than whether a site looks like the old Wii browser experience.
Option 1: Nintendo Switch with Nintendo Switch Online
What the base membership includes
Nintendo says members have ongoing access to classic NES, Super NES and Game Boy games, with online play added in supported titles. Its NES/SNES product listing describes that collection as containing more than 100 games. The Game Boy application supports TV, tabletop and handheld modes on Switch, so the same library can work in a living-room setup or as a portable replacement for short browser-game sessions.
What the Expansion Pack adds
The Expansion Pack tier adds Nintendo 64, SEGA Genesis, Game Boy Advance and Virtual Boy collections. Nintendo GameCube Classics are listed for Switch 2 only; a standard Switch does not provide that part of the catalogue. Choose the tier based on the systems you actually want rather than assuming every retro platform is included in the base membership.

- 6.2” LCD screen

- Detachable Joy-Con controllers

Requirements and validation
Nintendo’s support instructions require a Nintendo Switch or Switch 2, internet access and the appropriate Nintendo Switch Online membership to download and use the classic libraries. Internet access may also be required periodically to validate that membership. A console that is permanently offline is therefore a poor fit for subscription-based classics, even if you expect to play mainly offline.
How to start
- Select the hardware. Use a Nintendo Switch for NES, Super NES, Game Boy and the Expansion Pack systems listed for that model. Select Switch 2 if GameCube Classics are the deciding factor.
- Choose the membership level. The base plan covers NES, Super NES and Game Boy. Select Expansion Pack for Nintendo 64, SEGA Genesis, Game Boy Advance or Virtual Boy; GameCube access requires Switch 2.
- Connect the console to the internet. This is needed to obtain the classic-game software and to perform periodic membership validation.
- Install the relevant classic-game application. Use the Nintendo eShop listing on the console and follow its download instructions for the systems included with your membership.
- Check each title’s play features. Online or local multiplayer is available only where the individual game supports it. Do not assume every classic title has network play.
- Plan for lapses. If the membership ends, access to the subscription library ends as well. Keep a separate list of games you would rather own outright.
Who should choose it
This is the closest official substitute for browsing a large, ready-made catalogue: one console, curated applications and multiple retro generations. It is strongest for variety and supported multiplayer, but the ongoing membership and periodic validation are part of the deal.
Option 2: Buy individual Switch games or packaged collections
Why ownership changes the trade-off
Nintendo says classic games can also be made available through Nintendo eShop or packaged collections. Buying a title or collection separately avoids tying that particular game to a Nintendo Switch Online membership. Physical game cards can be preferable when you want a tangible copy or want to reduce reliance on a particular digital storefront.

Each title’s availability is regional and can change. Check the store listing for your country before planning a collection around a specific game. A game that appears in one region, on one platform or in one compilation may not be offered in another. Availability should be verified title by title rather than inferred from the original Wii release.

Internet and offline expectations
After a digital purchase is downloaded, internet dependence is usually lower than with a membership library, but verify the requirements for the individual title. Physical releases can also have game-specific updates or online modes. “Owned” does not automatically mean every feature works without a connection.
Best use case
Choose individual games or packaged collections when you have a short list of favorites, want to keep access independent of a subscription, or are building a focused library for a child or family room. The trade-off is a narrower catalogue unless you keep buying titles, and regional listings may change.
Option 3: Keep a used Wii or Wii U for owned discs
When this is sensible
If you already own Wii or Wii U discs, retaining the console can be the least expensive way to preserve those games. It avoids replacing a working physical collection and does not require a new subscription for offline play. This option is about preservation, not expanding into a modern browser-game catalogue.

What to expect from the hardware
- Use discs and accessories you lawfully own.
- Plan primarily for offline single-player or local play.
- Do not depend on the closed Wii Shop Channel for new purchases, redownloads or transfers.
- Do not depend on Wii U online-play services that ended in April 2024.
- Keep the console’s storage, cables and controllers in working order, because replacement parts and compatible accessories can be harder to find than current-console equivalents.
Who should choose it
This route suits collectors and families with an existing disc shelf. It is not a practical answer if your goal is a large selection of new, legally licensed browser games, because the old digital and network infrastructure is no longer the source of that selection.

Option 4: Unofficial fan servers and browser portals
Why they are not a dependable legal replacement
A project may recreate a network service or host browser-playable games without Nintendo’s authorization. The rights can differ by game, country and project operator, and the existence of a working server says nothing about whether its content is licensed. Nintendo specifically warns that unofficial services imitating Wii U network features are unsupported and may create unexpected security risks.
If you are evaluating one for technical research
- Look for clear information about the operator, the games’ licensing and the data the service collects.
- Avoid installing unknown executables, browser extensions or console modifications merely to reach a game list.
- Use a separate account and device only if you understand the security implications.
- Do not treat a lack of an obvious paywall as proof of legality.
- Expect the service to disappear or break without notice.
These precautions reduce exposure; they do not turn an unsupported project into an official alternative. For dependable access, use Nintendo’s own software or games sold through licensed channels.

Choose Switch plus the base membership when…
- You want NES, Super NES and Game Boy games in one official service.
- You value supported online or local play in titles that offer it.
- You accept recurring membership access and periodic internet validation.
Choose Expansion Pack when…
- Your target games are on Nintendo 64, SEGA Genesis, Game Boy Advance or Virtual Boy.
- You have a Switch 2 and specifically want Nintendo GameCube Classics.
- The additional systems justify the higher membership tier for your play habits.
Buy individual games or collections when…
- You want a small set of favorites rather than a broad catalogue.
- You prefer access that is not tied to an active classic-game membership.
- A physical card or packaged collection is available in your region.
Keep the Wii or Wii U when…
- You already own the discs and mainly play offline.
- Preservation matters more than new releases or online features.
Avoid making an unofficial portal your main library when…
- You cannot verify licensing or the operator’s security practices.
- You need reliable multiplayer, support or long-term availability.
- You would have to install untrusted software or modify hardware to use it.
Common problems and fixes
The classic library does not appear
Check that the console model and membership tier match the system you are looking for. NES, Super NES and Game Boy are part of the base membership; Nintendo 64, SEGA Genesis, Game Boy Advance and Virtual Boy require Expansion Pack. GameCube Classics are restricted to Switch 2 in Nintendo’s listing.

A game is missing from the catalogue
Availability can vary by region and can change over time. Search the Nintendo eShop for an individually sold release or a packaged collection, and verify the listing for your country instead of assuming that a Wii-era title is still offered.
Best Value
- One player can use a Joy-Con in each hand
- Two players can each take one
- Multiple Joy-Con can be employed by numerous people for a variety of gameplay options (additional Joy-Con sold separately)
- Slip a set of Joy-Con into a Joy-Con grip accessory, mirroring a more traditional controller. Or, select an optional Nintendo Switch Pro Controller.
The console asks for an internet connection
Reconnect the Switch or Switch 2 so it can validate the Nintendo Switch Online membership. Periodic validation is an expected requirement for the subscription libraries.
Multiplayer does not work
Online or local play is title-specific. The NES/SNES collection supports those features in supported games, but the presence of the application does not guarantee multiplayer for every entry.
You want to stop paying for a membership
Move the games you play most often to individually purchased Switch releases, packaged collections or physical cards when those versions are available in your region. Keep the membership only for systems and games whose breadth justifies it.
Legal and regional boundaries
The closure dates and support warnings establish why the original Wii route is obsolete, but they do not determine whether a particular unofficial browser-game site is licensed. That question requires site-specific rights evidence and may depend on your jurisdiction. When licensing is unclear, treat the service as unsupported rather than assuming that a familiar Nintendo game name makes the distribution lawful.
For most readers, the cleanest path is therefore straightforward: use a Switch with the Nintendo Switch Online tier that covers the systems you want, buy specific games when you want ownership, and keep an older Wii or Wii U only for discs you already legitimately own.
