The best substitute depends on what you value. Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition and The Last Remnant Remastered are playable modern releases; Kingdom Hearts collections mix playable remasters with HD video compilations; and Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade retells the setting in a new game rather than preserving the 1997 original.

Use this order when a Square Enix RPG is delisted
- Search Square Enix’s current game pages. Confirm whether the title has an HD remaster, remake, collection, or edition on a current storefront.
- Check the storefront for your platform and region. A game can remain available on one system while disappearing from another. Verify the exact edition, included content, language support, and whether the listing is for a playable game or only video scenes.
- If no authorized re-release exists, look for a legitimate original copy. A used disc or cartridge can be the closest match to the delisted release, provided you own compatible original hardware and the copy is genuine.
- Reject unauthorized digital copies and circumvention products. A game being unavailable for sale does not turn an unlicensed ROM, pirate cartridge, game copier, or mod chip into an authorized copy.
This order separates three different goals: playing a game conveniently today, preserving the original version, and following the distribution rules that apply in your country and on the relevant platform.

Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition
This is the clearest modern alternative when the goal is to play Chrono Cross without emulation. Square Enix describes it as an HD remaster and lists Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Steam versions.
What changed from the original

- Music is presented at higher quality.

Square Enix’s 2022 description also refers to more than 40 party members. That large roster is part of the original game’s identity, while the remaster’s convenience options make repeated exploration and combat less time-consuming.
Who should choose it
Choose this edition if you want legal access on a current console or PC, faster setup than finding legacy hardware, and optional quality-of-life controls. Do not present it as a byte-for-byte preservation release: the models, illustrations, audio presentation, and battle behavior have been adjusted. If preserving the exact original build is your priority, a genuine original disc and compatible hardware are closer.

The Last Remnant Remastered
The Last Remnant originally appeared as a 2008 role-playing game. Square Enix’s remastered release is listed for PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch and is described as using a new engine to improve visuals.
What the remaster solves
- It provides an authorized, playable version on two modern platforms.
- The new-engine presentation avoids relying on a functioning copy of the original release and its legacy hardware.
- Buying from the platform store gives you an official license rather than an uncertain download source.
What it does not promise
The listing does not establish that every asset, balance detail, interface behavior, or technical characteristic is identical to the 2008 version. Treat it as a remaster: a supported way to play the RPG, not proof that the original build has been preserved unchanged. If you need the original presentation, compare the remaster with a legitimate physical copy before buying.
Kingdom Hearts collections: check the format of every entry
Kingdom Hearts is unusually easy to misunderstand because “collection” can describe both playable remasters and movie-style story archives. Square Enix lists HD 1.5+2.5, HD 2.8, and Kingdom Hearts III collections across Steam, Epic, Nintendo, PlayStation, and Xbox storefronts. Its broader catalog also identifies a Kingdom Hearts Collection [I–III] for Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam.

Playable game versus HD cutscene compilation
A playable remaster lets you control the characters, save progress, fight, explore, and use the game’s systems. An HD cutscene compilation presents story scenes, sometimes with additional narrative material, but it does not supply the original interactive campaign. A collection page can contain both types.
How to verify before purchasing
- Open the individual product description rather than relying on the collection’s headline.
- Look for explicit wording that identifies a game as playable, remastered, or a movie/video compilation.
- Check whether the entry is sold as part of the bundle or as a separate purchase.
- Confirm the platform generation and regional storefront, especially when a listing mentions Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PS5, or Xbox Series X|S separately.
This route is best for readers whose main objective is to follow the Kingdom Hearts story legally. It is not automatically the best route for someone seeking every original gameplay experience.
Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade is a new interpretation
Square Enix lists Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade for PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch 2, Steam, and Epic. It is a modern reimagining rather than the 1997 game, so it should be framed as an alternative for readers who want the setting, characters, and broad narrative context—not as an exact preservation substitute.

When it is the right choice
- You want contemporary graphics, controls, and platform support.
- You are interested in experiencing the story through a redesigned structure and combat system.
- You do not require the original 1997 maps, pacing, battle mechanics, or presentation.
When to keep looking
If your goal is to study or replay the original release as it existed in 1997, a remake cannot meet that requirement by definition. Search for an authorized original edition or a genuine physical copy instead.

A legitimate disc or cartridge remains the closest match to a delisted release when no current remaster or collection is available. The U.S. Copyright Office’s Survey of the Video Game Reissue, published in 2025, summarizes a Delisted Games catalog snapshot from April 2023: roughly 1,800 games had been removed from digital storefronts, and nearly 700 of those were permanently unavailable at that time. Those figures describe that 2023 snapshot, not a current total; availability changes as publishers restore, replace, or remove products.

- Region: Confirm that the disc or cartridge matches your console’s regional requirements and that any regional lock will not prevent play.
- Hardware: Make sure you own the correct console, drive, controller, memory device, and power accessories.
- Condition: Inspect the disc surface, cartridge contacts, label, case, and included media. Ask for clear photographs and a return option where possible.
- Authenticity: Compare markings, label quality, board or disc details, and seller history. Counterfeit cartridges can look convincing but fail to boot or save correctly.
- Patches and updates: Determine whether the game needs a first-run patch, installation data, or an account connection. A physical copy may be playable offline yet still lose online features.
- Online services: Multiplayer servers, leaderboards, downloadable content, and account-based features may no longer operate even when the single-player disc works.
- Completeness: Check whether manuals, bonus discs, language versions, or included DLC are part of the edition you are buying.
A physical purchase gives you the original release media, not a guarantee that every surrounding service survives. For example, a disc can preserve the campaign while a discontinued server makes an online mode unavailable.

Why unauthorized ROMs and circumvention devices are not the fallback
Delisting changes where a publisher sells a game; it does not grant permission to redistribute the game’s data. Nintendo’s official Intellectual Property & Piracy FAQ states that the only legitimate way to download Nintendo games for its consoles is through Nintendo eShop or the Nintendo website. The same FAQ explains that unauthorized emulators and ROM use can involve unauthorized copies and circumvention of security measures.
That platform guidance is not a universal legal ruling for every country or every type of copy. Copyright, preservation, backup, and circumvention exceptions differ by jurisdiction, and an exception in one country may not apply in another. The practical rule is narrower and safer: do not obtain a ROM from an unauthorized site, do not buy a pirate cartridge, and do not use a game copier or mod chip marketed to bypass platform protections. If you need a jurisdiction-specific answer, consult a qualified local lawyer or the relevant copyright authority.
Choose the option that matches your priority

Use “fidelity” to mean more than graphics. A remaster can preserve the story while changing music, models, menus, encounter frequency, loading behavior, or accessibility options. Physical media can preserve a particular build while leaving you responsible for aging hardware and unavailable network services.
