You can legally play some PS5 exclusives without owning a PS5 in three ways: buy a game that has an official Windows PC release, stream eligible games with PlayStation Plus Premium on a Windows PC, or use PlayStation Portal cloud streaming with Premium. None of these options unlocks the entire PS5 library, and each has different requirements for ownership, internet quality, controllers, accounts and regional availability.

Choose the route that matches the game you want

The first question is not which device looks most like a console; it is whether the specific game is available through that route. A native PC release gives you a local copy, while both streaming options provide access only when the title is supported by Sony’s catalog or cloud service. Portal cloud streaming is the closest substitute for a console-style handheld, but it still requires Portal hardware, Premium and a reliable connection.

Route What you get What you need Main limitation
Native PC release A separately sold Windows version installed on your computer A compatible PC, a purchase through Steam or Epic Games Store, and sometimes a PlayStation account for specific features Only games with an official PC version are available; console saves do not currently transfer
PlayStation Plus Premium on PC Cloud streaming from the PlayStation Plus catalog through Sony’s Windows app An adult PlayStation account, Premium membership, compatible controller and broadband of at least 5 Mbps The catalog changes, supported games are limited, and DLC or add-ons cannot be used while streaming a PS Plus game
PlayStation Portal cloud streaming Cloud-streamed select PS5 games on Portal without pairing to a PS5 Portal hardware, an adult account, active Premium membership, a supported country and suitable upload and download speeds Only select PS5 titles are supported; PS4 and PS3 games are not currently streamable on Portal

Route 1: buy the game’s native PC release

When Sony publishes a Windows version, this is the most straightforward way to play without a console. The game runs locally on your computer rather than being rendered remotely, so your experience depends on PC hardware, drivers and settings instead of streaming latency. You also own access to that PC edition through the store where you bought it, subject to that store’s terms.

Which PlayStation games have official PC versions?

Sony’s official PC catalog includes Ghost of Tsushima, God of War Ragnarök, Horizon Forbidden West Complete Edition, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, Returnal, The Last of Us Part II Remastered, The Last of Us Part I, Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection, Until Dawn and Stellar Blade, among other releases. The catalog is not a promise that every PS5 exclusive will eventually come to Windows; check the current listing for the exact title and edition.

PS Portal + Case + Charging Station
  • Put Your PS5 in the Palm of Your Hand - PlayStation Portal Remote Player gives you access to the games on your PS5 over your home Wi-Fi*, letting you jump right into gaming without needing to play on a TV.
  • Play Your Game Collection - PlayStation Portal Remote Player can play compatible games you have installed on your PS5 console, including your favorite games for PS5 and PS4.**
  • Store and Protect – Sturdy outer shell, molded interior and dual zipper pulls provides protection for the PlayStation Portal remote player
  • Charging Cable Pass-through – Allows a charging cable to be plugged into the PS Portal while stored inside the case
  • Charge and Display – Charge the PlayStation Portal remote player and display it next to your PlayStation5 console

Sony distributes these PC products through Steam and the Epic Games Store. A PC purchase and a console purchase are separate products. Buying a PS5 copy does not automatically provide the Windows edition, and buying the Windows edition does not provide a PS5 license.

Check these details before buying

  • System requirements: Confirm the game’s minimum and recommended CPU, GPU, memory, storage and operating-system requirements on the retailer page. A PC release can need substantially more storage and graphics performance than a streaming session.
  • Account requirements: Some games require a PlayStation account for particular online modes or other features. Create or verify the account before starting if the store page lists that requirement.
  • Save compatibility: Sony says saves cannot currently transfer between the console and PC versions. Treat the two editions as separate progress tracks.
  • Edition contents: Compare standard, deluxe and complete editions carefully. A subtitle such as “Complete Edition” identifies the contents of that PC product; it does not make console ownership transferable.
  • Input: A keyboard and mouse may be supported, but a compatible controller is the safer choice for games designed around console controls. Check the individual PC listing for supported input methods.

When local PC play is the best fit

Choose this route when the exact game has an official release and you want permanent local access, the ability to play without an internet connection after installation, and freedom from streaming-image fluctuations. It is less suitable if your computer does not meet the requirements, if your target game has no PC edition, or if preserving PS5 save progress is important.

Route 2: stream games with PlayStation Plus Premium on a Windows PC

Sony’s PlayStation Plus PC app lets an adult-account holder stream eligible catalog games instead of downloading and rendering them locally. You sign in, connect a compatible controller and select a supported title. The remote server runs the game and sends the video to your PC while your controller inputs travel back to the service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What you need

  • A Windows PC capable of running the PlayStation Plus PC app.
  • An adult PlayStation account signed into the app.
  • An active PlayStation Plus Premium membership.
  • A compatible controller connected to the computer.
  • Broadband service of at least 5 Mbps. Sony recommends a wired connection for a more consistent stream.

The 5 Mbps figure is a minimum for the service, not a guarantee of perfect responsiveness. Wi-Fi congestion, household traffic, distance to the streaming server and local network quality can all affect delay or image stability. If controls feel late, first test the PC on Ethernet or a less congested Wi-Fi band and pause other high-bandwidth activity.

How to start a session

  1. Install Sony’s PlayStation Plus PC app on your Windows computer.
  2. Open the app and sign in with an adult PlayStation account that has Premium.
  3. Connect a compatible controller and confirm that Windows recognizes it.
  4. Browse the available catalog and open the page for the game you want.
  5. Select the streaming option and wait for the session to initialize.
  6. If the picture stutters or inputs lag, stop downloads and video streams on the same network, switch to a wired connection where possible, and retest before changing game settings.

Important limits of the PC streaming route

Streaming access follows the catalog rather than your personal wish list. Sony can add or remove games, and a title’s presence can vary by country or membership offering. A game being available on PS5, or having a PC release, does not by itself establish that it is streamable through Premium on PC.

DLC and add-ons cannot be used while streaming a PlayStation Plus game. That matters for expansions, extra characters, purchased packs and other downloadable content: the base streaming entry may launch, but the service does not let you use those add-ons in the streamed PS Plus session.

Premium is recurring access rather than ownership of every game in the catalog. If a title leaves the catalog or your membership ends, you lose streaming access unless you obtain it through another supported route. Check the current catalog before subscribing for one particular game.

When Premium on PC makes sense

This route is practical when you already have a Windows computer and want to avoid buying a console or a large game download. It is also useful for sampling supported titles before deciding whether a local PC edition is worth buying. It is a poor fit for someone with unstable broadband, strict offline requirements, a need for DLC, or a game that is absent from the current catalog.

Route 3: use PlayStation Portal cloud streaming without a PS5

PlayStation Portal has a cloud-streaming mode for select PS5 games with PlayStation Plus Premium. In its November 5, 2025 announcement, Sony described the feature this way: “Stream select PS5 games directly on your PS Portal with PlayStation Plus Premium.” This is different from Remote Play: cloud streaming connects Portal to Sony’s servers and does not require a PS5 to be switched on, paired or owned.

What Portal cloud streaming can access

Sony says the feature supports select digital PS5 games in a member’s library, along with compatible games from the Game Catalog and Classics Catalog. The company’s examples include Astro Bot, Borderlands 4, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Fortnite, Ghost of Yōtei, Grand Theft Auto V, Resident Evil 4, Cyberpunk 2077, God of War Ragnarök, Hogwarts Legacy and The Last of Us Part II Remastered. These examples illustrate eligibility; they are not a complete or permanent list.

Only select PS5 games are supported on Portal at present. PS4 and PS3 games are not currently streamable on Portal through this feature. A game can therefore be in a PlayStation catalog yet unavailable on the handheld if its supported version is not the required PS5 edition.

Requirements and connection guidance

  • Hardware: PlayStation Portal.
  • Membership: Active PlayStation Plus Premium.
  • Account: An adult PlayStation account.
  • Location: Residence in a country where Sony supports the service.
  • Internet: At least 5 Mbps upload and 5 Mbps download to establish cloud streaming.

Sony’s quality guidance lists 13 Mbps as the minimum for 1080p and also lists 23 Mbps for 1080p in its resolution guidance. The same table recommends 52 Mbps for 4K. These are service guidance figures, not a promise that every game will look or respond identically. Actual performance varies with the title and network conditions, and the upload requirement matters because Portal must send your controls and other session data back to the cloud service.

Starting a no-console Portal session

  1. Update Portal to the software version that includes cloud streaming, if an update is offered.
  2. Connect Portal to a stable Wi-Fi network with the required upload and download capacity.
  3. Sign in with an adult PlayStation account that has an active Premium membership.
  4. Open the cloud-streaming area on Portal rather than the Remote Play connection flow.
  5. Choose an eligible PS5 game from your library or the supported catalog.
  6. Launch the session and monitor responsiveness. If the stream is unstable, move closer to the router, reduce competing traffic or use a faster network before concluding that the game or hardware is at fault.

Why Portal is different from Remote Play

Remote Play mirrors a game running on your own PS5, so it cannot replace the console. Portal cloud streaming is the no-PS5 option: the game runs remotely and Portal acts as the screen and controller. Selecting the wrong mode is the most common conceptual mistake. If the setup asks you to connect to a PS5, you are in Remote Play, not the cloud-streaming service described here.

A practical decision process

If you have one specific game in mind

  1. Look for an official Windows release in Sony’s current PC catalog.
  2. If there is one, decide whether your computer meets its requirements and whether local ownership matters.
  3. If there is no PC release, check the current PlayStation Plus Premium catalog for the exact supported version.
  4. If you want a handheld experience, check Portal’s cloud-streaming eligibility separately; PC catalog availability does not guarantee Portal availability.
  5. Confirm that your country, account age and internet connection meet the service requirements before paying.

If you want the broadest practical choice

A capable Windows PC with native releases offers the most control over installation, graphics settings and offline use, but it still covers only Sony’s PC catalog. Premium on PC adds cloud access without a console and avoids large downloads, at the cost of catalog turnover and network dependence. Portal is the most console-like portable option, but it combines the narrowest hardware format with Premium, supported-country restrictions and select-game eligibility.

If your internet connection is the weak link

  • Measure both upload and download performance at the location where you will play.
  • Prefer Ethernet for a Windows streaming setup when practical.
  • For Portal, test the actual Wi-Fi position rather than relying on the speed measured beside the router.
  • Stop large downloads, cloud backups and 4K video streams during play.
  • Expect responsiveness to vary even when a speed test exceeds the stated minimum; latency and packet loss matter as well as headline bandwidth.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Assuming every PS5 exclusive is available somewhere else

Sony’s PC catalog, Premium catalog and Portal cloud library overlap only partially. A title may be console-only, PC-only among these alternatives, catalog-streamable on Windows but not Portal, or available in one country and absent in another. Verify the exact game and platform rather than relying on the “exclusive” label.

Confusing a digital purchase with a streaming entitlement

Owning a digital PS5 game does not automatically create a native PC license. Portal cloud streaming can include select digital PS5 games in a Premium member’s library, but that does not mean every digital purchase is supported. Eligibility is determined by Sony’s cloud service.

Expecting console saves on PC

Sony currently says console and PC saves cannot transfer between the two versions. Start a new PC save unless the specific game provides a separately documented migration feature.

Buying Premium for a game that leaves the catalog

Catalog membership is changeable. Check the current listing immediately before subscribing, especially if you intend to play only one title.

Expecting DLC to work in a streamed PS Plus game

DLC and add-ons cannot be used while streaming a PS Plus game on PC. Confirm the service’s supported content before purchasing an expansion for a streaming-only plan.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Calling Remote Play a no-console solution

Remote Play requires a PS5. The no-console Portal feature is cloud streaming through Premium, which is a separate connection mode and has its own supported-game list.

Costs and eligibility can change

Sony’s 2026 pricing page lists PlayStation Plus Premium at $19.99 for one month and $159.99 for 12 months. These are the prices shown for that page and can change by region, tax, promotion or billing period. The annual price is not evidence that every catalog title will remain available for the full year.

Catalog membership, supported countries, account rules, hardware software and individual game eligibility are all volatile. Check Sony’s current plan page, catalog, PC app information and cloud-streaming requirements immediately before purchasing a membership, buying Portal or selecting a game.

Bottom line: match the game, hardware and connection

Buy the native PC edition when Sony has released the exact game for Windows and you want local ownership. Choose Premium on a Windows PC when the game is in the current streaming catalog and avoiding a console or large download matters more than offline access and DLC. Choose Portal cloud streaming when you want a handheld, console-like interface and can meet the Premium, country, account and broadband requirements without owning a PS5.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

These are legitimate alternatives, not universal workarounds. No option covers every PS5 exclusive, so eligibility checking is the step that prevents the most expensive mistake.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
