Best League of Legends Video and Network Settings for Smooth Competitive Play

The best competitive setup is not one magic preset. First separate frame-time problems (low or unstable FPS, hitching and stutter) from network problems (high latency, packet loss, jitter and disconnects). Enable Riot’s Low Spec mode as a baseline, make frame delivery stable, then tune image quality one option at a time. For online stability, use Ethernet when possible, stop competing traffic, and troubleshoot latency, packet loss and jitter independently.

Start by identifying the failure mode

A game that feels “laggy” can be suffering from two unrelated systems. Your graphics hardware determines how quickly each frame is rendered; your network determines how reliably game data reaches Riot’s servers and returns. Changing resolution will not repair packet loss, and replacing a Wi‑Fi connection will not fix a graphics card that is dropping frames.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

What you notice Most likely system First check
Low FPS all the time Graphics settings, GPU/CPU load, drivers or thermal limits Enable Low Spec mode and watch whether frame rate becomes stable
FPS is high but the picture hitches Frame-time spikes, background tasks, drivers or shader compilation Close heavy applications, update display drivers and lower variable settings
Champions snap backward or actions arrive late Latency, packet loss or jitter Check the in-game network graph and connection conditions
“Attempting to Reconnect” appears Missing or delayed game data Check wired connection, packet loss and competing traffic
Only one match or time of day is affected Local congestion, interference or a route problem Compare Ethernet with Wi‑Fi and test when other traffic is stopped

Keep a short record while testing: display resolution, whether Low Spec mode is enabled, average and minimum-feeling FPS, ping behavior, and when the issue occurs. Change one category at a time so you know which action helped. A useful record distinguishes a problem that occurs every match from one that appears only during household streaming or at a particular hour.

Build a stable video baseline

Enable Riot’s Low Spec mode first

Riot’s directly supported shortcut is in the League Client. Open Settings, choose General, and enable Enable Low Spec Mode. Riot says this reduces variable settings to low. It is the quickest baseline when the client or game is struggling, and it avoids guessing at dozens of individual options.

  • Wide Compatibility: With the RJ45 Connector, network cable can be perfectly compatible with computers, laptops, modems, routers, PS5, X-Box and other networking devices. It can also be fully backward compatible with Cat7, Cat6e, Cat6, Cat5e, Cat5
  1. Open the League Client.
  2. Select the gear icon to open Settings.
  3. Stay on General.
  4. Turn on Enable Low Spec Mode.
  5. Launch a practice game or normal match and check whether frame delivery is steady.

Low Spec mode is a starting point, not a universal competitive prescription. Once the game is stable, you can raise visual quality gradually and stop at the first setting that brings back hitching. If enabling it does not change the symptom, that is useful evidence: the issue may be network-related, caused by a driver or background process, or limited by hardware outside the game’s variable settings.

Update the operating system and display drivers

Riot lists outdated drivers as a common source of crashes and performance trouble. Install current operating-system updates and the latest driver offered for your graphics hardware. Restart before testing again. If a new driver introduces a problem, use the vendor’s supported rollback option rather than installing random driver packages. Keep the display driver and the network-adapter driver as separate checks; updating one does not update the other.

Use stability, not peak FPS, as the goal

A frame rate that fluctuates sharply can feel worse than a lower rate that arrives at regular intervals. Look for consistent frame delivery during fights, camera movement and ability-heavy scenes. Riot does not publish one FPS target or cap that fits every monitor and PC, so do not treat an internet-recommended number as a guaranteed requirement. The right cap is one your system can sustain in the demanding scenes you actually play, not the highest number shown while your champion is standing still.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Raise quality one variable at a time

After Low Spec mode produces a stable baseline, increase one option, play through a repeatable scene, and keep the change only if frame delivery remains reliable. Use the following order to make the trade-off clear:

  1. Resolution and display mode: Keep your monitor’s native resolution when performance allows; lowering it can reduce GPU work but makes the image softer. Use the game’s supported full-screen or borderless mode that behaves reliably on your system.
  2. Effects and shadows: These can create heavy moments during team fights. Raise them only after ordinary lane movement and large fights remain smooth.
  3. Character and environment detail: Increase these for image clarity if your frame times stay consistent.
  4. Anti-aliasing: Test it after the expensive effects are stable. Smoothing edges can improve appearance but costs rendering time on some hardware.
  5. V-Sync: Treat it as a display-latency and tearing choice, not a network fix. Compare the feel with it enabled and disabled on your monitor.
  6. Frame-rate limit: Choose a cap that your PC can sustain rather than chasing an unstable peak. Riot provides no single cap for every refresh rate, processor or graphics card.

Apply the same test route after each change. If a setting causes spikes, return it to the previous value; competitive clarity is less useful when frame timing is erratic. Do not change resolution, V-Sync and the cap simultaneously, because you will not know which choice changed responsiveness or tearing.

Video-setting trade-offs at a glance

Setting area Smoothness priority Image-quality benefit Competitive caution
Resolution Lower resolution can reduce rendering work Native resolution is sharper A soft image can make visual information harder to read
Effects and shadows Lower values protect demanding team fights Higher values add spectacle and scene detail Test during combat, not only in an empty lane
Character and environment detail Reduce if frame delivery remains uneven Improves model and map clarity Raise only after the baseline is stable
Anti-aliasing Disable or reduce if it creates spikes Smoother edges Its cost varies by hardware
V-Sync Compare both modes for consistent timing Can reduce visible tearing It changes display behavior, not ping
Frame-rate limit A sustainable cap avoids unstable peaks No direct image-quality change There is no Riot cap that fits every PC and monitor

Understand ping, packet loss and jitter

Latency (ping)

Riot defines latency as the time data packets take to travel from your computer to Riot’s game servers and back, measured in milliseconds. Lower latency is better. Physical distance is the largest contributor when the connection is otherwise normal, so a distant server region cannot be made local by a graphics setting. A lower average is helpful, but consistency matters as well: note whether ping remains steady or jumps during play.

Packet loss

Packet loss means packets fail to reach your computer or Riot’s servers. Missing data must be retransmitted or recovered, delaying game updates and producing freezes, rubber-banding or disconnects. Riot says packet loss should be as close to 0% as possible. A fast speed-test download number does not rule out packet loss, because throughput and delivery reliability are different measurements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Jitter

Jitter is latency changing over time. A connection that reports a reasonable average ping can still feel erratic when individual packets arrive at widely different times. Riot says jitter should be as close to 0 ms as possible. This is why a match can feel unstable even when a single ping reading looks acceptable.

Metric What it measures What a problem feels like Target stated by Riot
Latency Round-trip travel time to the game server Delayed input and slower updates Lower is better
Packet loss Packets that never arrive Freezes, rubber-banding, reconnects As close to 0% as possible
Jitter Variation in latency over time Inconsistent movement and hit registration As close to 0 ms as possible

Ethernet versus Wi‑Fi for ranked games

Use a direct Ethernet/LAN cable from the PC to the router or modem whenever practical. Riot recommends wired networking because wireless signals are affected by distance, walls, interference from other radio devices and contention from other clients. Riot describes wireless connections as difficult to troubleshoot for those reasons and says switching to a LAN cable is the best way to improve a Wi‑Fi connection.

Wi‑Fi can still work well when the access point is nearby, the signal is clean and household traffic is light. However, a speed-test result does not prove that a Wi‑Fi link has stable latency during a match. A cable removes the local radio hop and gives you a clearer baseline for diagnosing the internet route. If you need an accessory, a basic Ethernet cable long enough to reach the router is the direct purchase that matches Riot’s recommendation; it is not a promise of a particular ping reduction.

  • Connect the gaming PC directly to the router or modem; avoid a loose or damaged cable.
  • If Ethernet is impossible, move the access point closer, reduce obstructions and use the least congested supported band.
  • Retest at the time the problem normally occurs, because interference and household usage vary.
  • Do not judge Wi‑Fi solely by signal bars or download speed; compare actual in-game stability.

Fix connection problems in the right order

1. Stop competing traffic

Pause game downloads, operating-system updates, cloud synchronization, torrents, high-definition video and large file transfers. Riot also calls out streaming and voice-chat programs as possible connection loads. Ask other users to pause heavy activity during a ranked session, or schedule it outside matches. Make this the first test because it is reversible and immediately shows whether local contention is involved.

2. Disable VPNs and proxies while diagnosing

VPNs and proxies add another route and can introduce delay or instability. Turn them off for testing. Riot warns that a VPN should be used for routing tests only when a technical specialist specifically advises it; do not assume a VPN will lower ping. Record whether the problem changes with the VPN off, then leave it off while completing the remaining checks.

3. Update the network-adapter driver

Install the current driver for your Ethernet or Wi‑Fi adapter using your operating system’s normal update tools or the computer manufacturer’s support page. Reboot after installation. A driver update is especially worth trying when problems began after an operating-system update or when only one adapter is unreliable. Confirm which adapter you are actually using before updating, so you do not mistake an unused Wi‑Fi driver for the active connection.

4. Power-cycle the network equipment

  1. Close League and other network-heavy applications.
  2. Turn off the modem and router using their power controls.
  3. Wait for the equipment to finish shutting down, then power the modem back on.
  4. Wait until its connection indicators settle, power on the router, and wait again.
  5. Reconnect the PC and test a match.

This clears transient state; it does not repair a damaged cable, an overloaded access point or an upstream service fault. If the issue returns only when another device becomes active, continue with the contention test rather than repeatedly rebooting.

5. Reset TCP/IP when the local stack is suspect

Riot includes TCP/IP reset procedures in its connection guidance. Use the instructions for your operating system exactly, then restart the computer. Resetting the stack can remove a corrupted local configuration, but it will not reduce the physical distance to Riot’s server or fix provider congestion. Treat it as an escalation step, not a routine pre-match ritual.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Test an alternate DNS service

Riot lists trying a public DNS as an escalation step. DNS changes affect name resolution; they are not a guaranteed ping reduction. Record your original DNS settings so you can restore them, change only the DNS fields, restart the connection, and compare whether reconnects or lookup failures improve. If in-game latency is unchanged, restore the setting rather than assuming DNS can optimize every route.

7. Check firewall and security software

Firewall rules can block or interrupt the client and game. Verify that League and its required components are allowed through the operating system firewall, and test cautiously with third-party security software configured according to its vendor’s instructions. Do not leave protection disabled as a permanent “fix.” If a firewall change helps, document the exact allowed components and keep the rest of the security policy intact.

8. Use a clean boot to find software conflicts

Riot recommends a clean boot when background software may be interfering. Disable nonessential startup services using your operating system’s supported clean-boot process, restart, test League, and then re-enable items in groups until the conflicting program is identified. Restore normal startup afterward. This method is slower than closing one visible app, but it can expose an overlay, utility or background service that starts before the game.

What “Attempting to Reconnect” means

Riot says this message appears when the game is trying to catch up on missing data. Your champion may freeze while the rest of the game also appears frozen. Treat it as a connectivity symptom first: use Ethernet, stop competing traffic, disable VPNs or proxies, and check for packet loss and jitter. If the message repeats after local fixes, preserve the time and frequency of each occurrence for support rather than repeatedly changing graphics options. Note whether the entire household connection slows at the same moment and whether Ethernet changes the result.

When the problem is intermittent

Separate local Wi‑Fi trouble from the wider route

Run the same test on Ethernet and Wi‑Fi under otherwise identical conditions. If Ethernet is clean while Wi‑Fi spikes, investigate signal quality, interference or access-point placement. If both behave the same, the cause may be the router, modem, internet provider or route to the game server. Keep the test conditions comparable: the same game region, similar household activity and a similar time of day.

Compare idle and busy conditions

Test once with every other device quiet and once during normal household use. A spike that appears only when another device uploads, streams or synchronizes suggests contention. A QoS-capable router can be an optional household-management tool, but it cannot create bandwidth that your service does not provide and it is not a substitute for checking packet loss. Router QoS is therefore a management option for a busy home, not a guaranteed competitive advantage or a replacement for Ethernet.

Collect logs before contacting support

Riot provides a connection-log reader and the Riot Repair Tool. Use one of these tools to gather logs, note your region and server, and submit the resulting information to Player Support if the issue remains. Include whether you used Ethernet, the approximate times of spikes, and which troubleshooting steps changed the behavior. A concise timeline is more useful than a general statement that the game is “laggy.”

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Changing graphics settings for a network fault: Resolution, anti-aliasing and V-Sync cannot repair packet loss or a route problem.
  • Chasing a peak FPS number: An impressive menu or idle number does not prove stable frame delivery in a team fight.
  • Assuming a speed test proves match quality: Throughput does not directly measure jitter, packet loss or the path to Riot’s servers.
  • Keeping a VPN enabled while diagnosing: It adds a variable and may create the instability you are trying to identify.
  • Changing several variables at once: You lose the evidence needed to know which step helped.
  • Leaving security disabled: Use firewall and clean-boot tests temporarily and restore normal protection afterward.
  • Expecting DNS or QoS to perform magic: Both are escalation or management tools, not guaranteed ping reductions.

A practical competitive checklist

  • Enable Settings → General → Enable Low Spec Mode if performance is unstable.
  • Update the operating system and graphics driver.
  • Prefer a direct Ethernet connection for ranked play.
  • Stop downloads, streaming, cloud sync and other heavy traffic.
  • Disable VPNs and proxies during diagnosis.
  • Judge smoothness by consistent frame delivery, not an unexplained peak FPS number.
  • Track latency, packet loss and jitter separately from graphics performance.
  • Power-cycle networking equipment, then escalate to TCP/IP, DNS, firewall and clean-boot checks.
  • Use Riot’s log tools and contact Player Support when reconnects or packet loss continue.

The reliable method is incremental: establish stable frames, then improve image quality; establish a clean wired connection, then investigate routing and software. That approach avoids wasting time on settings that cannot affect the symptom you are seeing.

How do I stop League stuttering and ping spikes?

First determine whether the hitch is a frame-time spike or a network spike. For video stutter, use Low Spec mode, close heavy applications and update display drivers. For ping spikes, use Ethernet, stop downloads and streaming, disable VPNs and proxies, and check packet loss and jitter separately.

Should I use Ethernet or Wi‑Fi for ranked games?

Use direct Ethernet whenever practical. Riot says wireless interference, distance and other radio signals make Wi‑Fi harder to troubleshoot and recommends switching to a LAN cable. Wi‑Fi may work, but compare it with Ethernet under the same household conditions.

What causes “Attempting to Reconnect” in LoL?

Riot says the message appears while the game tries to catch up on missing data. Packet loss, unstable wireless conditions, competing traffic, VPNs, firewall problems or an upstream route issue can contribute. Check connectivity before changing graphics settings.

Can a DNS change lower my League ping?

Riot lists a public DNS as an escalation step, but DNS changes name resolution and do not guarantee lower in-game latency. Record the original settings, change only the DNS fields, restart, and keep the change only if it improves the specific reconnect or lookup problem.

Will a gaming router or QoS fix packet loss?

A QoS-capable router can help manage competing household traffic, but it cannot create bandwidth or replace packet-loss troubleshooting. Test with other devices quiet, use Ethernet where possible, and escalate to Riot’s log tools and Player Support if packet loss continues.

The Bottom Line

For smooth competitive League play, separate graphics performance from connection quality. Enable Riot’s Low Spec mode, update drivers, tune visuals toward stable frame delivery, and prefer Ethernet. Then eliminate competing traffic, VPNs and proxies before escalating through router, TCP/IP, DNS, firewall, clean-boot and log checks. Stable frames and near-zero packet loss and jitter matter more than a universal preset or a peak benchmark number.
