Best League of Legends Settings for Watching and Recording Replays (2026)

Use the League client for the quickest clips, League Director for cinematic replay work, and OBS Studio for complete match recordings. The right choice depends on whether you need speed, camera control, or a conventional video file for editing. All three workflows begin with a replay downloaded from Match History and opened through the League client.

Choose the right replay workflow first

There is no single best setting for every replay job. A short highlight, a coaching review and a cinematic montage need different controls and file formats.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Goal Best tool Typical output What it does well Main limitation
Save a moment quickly League client Highlights .webm One-key capture while the replay is playing; no separate recorder setup Basic replay camera and the client’s documented 720p default
Study a player or create a controlled shot League Director WebM or PNG sequence Free camera, champion or minion attachment, HUD controls and keyframed movement Documented as Windows-only and requires a more deliberate setup
Record a full session for editing OBS Studio OBS recording file Captures the lobby and live game with separate sources and supports a repeatable scene layout Requires correct source types, executable selection and scene switching

For most people, start with Highlights. Move to League Director when composition and camera movement matter. Choose OBS when you want a continuous recording rather than selected moments.

Understand what a League replay is before you record it

A League replay is a .rofl file that the League client launches. It is not an unrestricted video file: Riot states that “Replays last for the length of a patch cycle.” When the client advances to another patch, an older replay may no longer open. Treat the replay as a temporary source and export important scenes while it is still compatible.

  • 【INTEGRATED SPEAKERS】Whether you're at work or in the midst of an intense gaming session, our built-in speakers provide rich and seamless audio, all while keeping your desk clutter-free.
  • 【EASY ON THE EYES】 Protect your eyes and enhance your comfort with Blue-Light Shift technology. This feature reduces harmful blue light emissions from your screen, helping to alleviate eye strain during long hours of use and promoting healthier viewing habits.
  • 【WIDEN YOUR PERSPECTIVE】Our sleek minimal bezel design ensures undivided attention. The nearly bezel-free display seamlessly connects in a dual monitor arrangement, delivering an unobstructed view that lets you focus on more at once, completely distraction-free.

Download and launch the replay

  1. Open the League client and go to Profile followed by Match History.
  2. Find the match you want and use the replay download control. A post-game screen can also provide a download option.
  3. After the download completes, select Watch Replay. The client opens the .rofl file in its replay viewer.
  4. Let the replay load completely before judging camera or graphics behavior. A recording application cannot capture a replay that has not actually entered the game view.

Use the timeline for analysis

The replay timeline lets you jump directly to events instead of watching the entire match in real time. Scrub to a fight, objective or lane transition, then pause and resume while you inspect positioning. This is faster than repeatedly restarting a full match and makes the same moment easy to revisit before you record it.

Follow a champion or lock the camera

Select a champion portrait to follow that player. Champion hotkeys provide another way to change the observed player without dragging the camera manually. Double-select a champion to lock the camera to that champion. For a less rigid view, drag with the middle mouse button to pan smoothly around the action.

Preserve work before a patch change

Because replay compatibility follows the patch cycle, do not leave an important scene only inside the replay. Capture a Highlight, record it with OBS, or export a sequence from League Director while the replay still opens. Store the resulting video or image sequence outside the client’s replay area so it remains available after an update.

Best settings for watching and making quick clips with the League client

The built-in Highlights recorder is the shortest path from a replay to a shareable clip. It records .webm files, uses 720p as the documented default, and exposes video-quality controls before you record. The exact quality choices shown can depend on the client version and the capabilities of the system, so select the highest option that plays and saves reliably on your machine.

Set the replay and Highlight locations

  1. Open the League client’s Settings.
  2. Go to the Replays section.
  3. Choose the save location for replay files and the save location for Highlights. Use a folder that is easy to back up and has enough free space.
  4. Confirm the locations, then return to the replay. Changing a folder does not convert existing clips; it controls where new files are written.

Choose a practical recording quality

Use the in-replay video-quality controls before capturing a moment. The 720p default is suitable for quick sharing and creates a smaller file. A higher available quality is preferable when text, item icons or small champion movements must remain readable, but it also increases storage use and may make capture less reliable on a heavily loaded system. Make a short test Highlight before recording an entire sequence.

  • HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadow for added depth - making every scene feel more vivid and realistic
  • The 180Hz refresh rate minimizes lag for gameplay with ultra-smooth action. Plus, the 1ms response time helps capture your moves in real-time, allowing you to react fast for gaming precision
  • AMD FreeSync reduces choppiness, screen lag and image tearing, ensuring that your fast-paced, complex in-game action is stable with minimal stutter
  • Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort

Capture a Highlight with the keyboard

  1. Open the downloaded replay and move the timeline to the moment you want.
  2. Set the camera using a champion portrait, champion hotkey, camera lock or middle-mouse pan.
  3. Press Ctrl+V to start recording a Highlight.
  4. Press Ctrl+V again to stop. The client writes the clip as a .webm file in the configured Highlight location.
  5. Open the client’s Highlights section to review the clip, rename it, delete unwanted takes or share it.

Keep the camera and timeline ready before pressing the shortcut. Starting the recording after the key event has already happened is the most common way to miss the opening of a play. For a longer explanation or several camera angles, use OBS or League Director instead of trying to stitch many short Highlights together.

When the client recorder is the best choice

  • Use it for a few seconds or a short sequence that needs no advanced camera path.
  • Use it when you want a documented, integrated workflow with no scene configuration.
  • Use it when a 720p default or the available in-client quality options meet your sharing needs.

Make cinematic replays with League Director

League Director is the most capable documented option for planned replay shots. It adds a free camera, camera attachment to champions or minions, HUD controls and a sequencer for keyframed movement. It can capture WebM video or PNG images, allowing either a direct clip or an image sequence for a separate editing workflow. Its README documents the application as Windows-only.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prepare the replay and graphics

  1. Download the match replay and verify that it opens in the League client.
  2. Launch League Director and start the replay from the application’s replay workflow.
  3. Open the video graphics settings and set Video Graphics to Very High when your system can run it consistently.
  4. If you changed that graphics setting after the replay was already open, restart the replay. League Director’s skybox and related rendering features may not update until a new replay session is loaded.

Very High is a visual-quality requirement for the documented skybox behavior, not a guarantee that every computer will record smoothly at that level. If playback stutters, test the replay before committing to a long capture and choose a stable setting rather than allowing dropped or uneven frames.

Compose the shot

  • Use the free camera to move independently of the selected champion.
  • Attach the camera to a champion for a player-focused follow shot.
  • Attach it to a minion when the lane wave or an objective approach is the subject.
  • Hide the HUD, health bars and notifications when the frame needs to look clean.
  • Return the HUD when you are making a coaching clip and viewers need cooldowns, health or objective information.

Build the shot before recording: place the camera, choose the subject and scrub the timeline until the action enters frame. A clean start and end are easier to obtain when the camera is already positioned than when you try to move it while an ability is being cast.

Use keyframes for repeatable movement

League Director’s sequencer lets you keyframe camera positions and timing. Place an initial keyframe before the play, a second one during the important action and a final one after it. Preview the sequence, adjust the spacing between keyframes and remove unnecessary movement. Fewer deliberate points generally produce a more readable camera path than constantly changing the view.

  • Smooth motion: 240Hz refresh rate and fast 0.5ms response time provide crisp visuals and fluid movement with less input lag.
  • Seamless gaming: FreeSync Premium and HDMI VRR eliminate tearing for smooth, responsive PC and console gameplay.
  • Fast IPS: Faster 0.5ms response with excellent color accuracy across wide IPS viewing angles.
  • Rich color: 99% sRGB color coverage delivers vivid, detailed imagery with strong accuracy.
  • Eye comfort: TÜV Rheinland 3‑star certified display lowers blue light while preserving color quality.

Choose WebM or PNG export

Export WebM when you want a ready-to-play video clip. Export PNG when your editing workflow benefits from an image sequence, such as compositing, frame-by-frame retiming or a separate encoder. Confirm the destination and inspect a short export before rendering a long sequence; this catches framing and timing mistakes while they are inexpensive to fix.

Record the lobby and game correctly with OBS Studio

OBS uses two capture contexts because the League client lobby and the running game are separate Windows processes. OBS states: “League of Legends requires separate Window Capture and Game Capture sources for the lobby and game.” Use a Window Capture source for LeagueClientUx.exe and a Game Capture source for League of Legends.exe.

Create the two scenes

  1. Open OBS and create a scene named Lobby.
  2. Add a Window Capture source to that scene and select LeagueClientUx.exe. This is the client window used for Match History, replay loading and other lobby screens.
  3. Create a second scene named Game.
  4. Add a Game Capture source to the Game scene and select League of Legends.exe.
  5. Arrange each source in the preview and verify that the selected window is the one you intend to record.

Do not substitute Game Capture for the lobby or Window Capture for the running game just because both sources can display a window. The process distinction is the part that prevents OBS from following the wrong context.

Switch scenes automatically

Configure OBS Automatic Scene Switcher so the Lobby scene is used when the game window is absent and the Game scene is used when the lobby window is absent. This allows the recording to move between client screens and the active game without manually clicking a scene at the transition.

Test while a session is active

Start a replay, training session or game before testing the Game Capture source. OBS notes that Game Capture first needs an active session. If you test only from the client lobby, the game source can appear empty even though the executable selection is correct.

Record a replay from start to finish

  1. Open the replay in the League client and leave OBS on the Lobby scene while it loads.
  2. Start the replay and confirm that Automatic Scene Switcher changes to the Game scene.
  3. Watch the OBS preview for the first few seconds. Check that the replay image, rather than the desktop or another application, is visible.
  4. Start the OBS recording after the scene has switched and stop it after the final moment you need.
  5. Review the resulting file before deleting the source replay. Confirm that the beginning, transition and ending are all present.

Keep the OBS setup maintainable

  • Use clear scene and source names so you can identify the lobby executable and game executable at a glance.
  • Keep the Lobby and Game scenes separate instead of placing both capture sources in one scene and hiding them manually.
  • Make a short test recording whenever the League client or OBS updates and the selected executable behavior changes.
  • Disable competing overlays or automatic recorders during diagnosis. Multiple capture hooks can make the visible window differ from the source you selected.

No universal resolution, frame rate or encoder preset suits every computer. Set those OBS output values according to your display, storage capacity and editing target, then validate them with a short recording rather than assuming a preset will suit every system.

Troubleshoot the problems that stop a replay recording

The replay will not open

Confirm that the replay was downloaded from Match History or the post-game download control and that you are launching it through the League client. If the client has moved to a new patch since the match, the replay may have passed its supported patch cycle. In that case, use an already exported clip if you made one; a recorder cannot repair an incompatible .rofl file.

OBS shows a black screen

  1. Check the scene first: the lobby must use Window Capture and the game must use Game Capture.
  2. Check the selected executable. The lobby source should target LeagueClientUx.exe; the game source should target League of Legends.exe.
  3. Bring the intended window to the foreground and start an active replay or training session before testing Game Capture.
  4. Temporarily disable competing overlays and automatic recorders. Re-enable them one at a time after the capture works.
  5. Make a short test recording, stop it and inspect the file. Do not rely only on the live preview.

OBS records the wrong window

Re-open the source properties and verify the executable and active window. A lobby source can continue showing the client while you expect game footage if Automatic Scene Switcher has not changed scenes. Conversely, a Game Capture source cannot display a lobby that has not entered the game process.

The skybox or visual effects look unchanged in League Director

Set Video Graphics to Very High, then restart the replay. Changing the setting while the current replay is already running may leave the previous rendering state in place.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Highlight is missing or saved somewhere unexpected

Open the client’s Settings and Replays section, then check both the Replay and Highlight save locations. The client’s Highlights area is useful for confirming that the clip was created, renaming it and deleting failed takes. Remember that Highlights are .webm files, so look for that extension rather than a video format associated with OBS.

The clip is too short or starts late

Move the timeline to a few seconds before the key event, prepare the camera, and press Ctrl+V before the action begins. For a sequence that needs a long lead-in, multiple angles or a carefully timed camera move, switch to OBS or League Director rather than chaining many short client clips.

Practical workflows for common replay jobs

Coaching review

  1. Open the replay and use the timeline to jump to the objective, fight or lane state under discussion.
  2. Select the relevant champion portrait or use champion hotkeys to follow the player.
  3. Double-select to lock the camera when the explanation depends on that champion’s movement.
  4. Keep HUD information visible if cooldowns, health or notifications are part of the lesson.
  5. Capture only the moments needed with Highlights, or record the whole review with OBS if you need a continuous narration.

Short social clip

  1. Set the Highlight location and choose the available in-client quality option that your system can capture reliably.
  2. Scrub just before the play and frame the action with the replay camera.
  3. Press Ctrl+V before the event and again after it ends.
  4. Review and rename the .webm in the client’s Highlights section before sharing.

Cinematic montage shot

  1. Open the replay in League Director on a supported Windows installation.
  2. Set Video Graphics to Very High and restart the replay if you changed it.
  3. Hide HUD elements, choose free camera or attach to a champion or minion, and position the opening frame.
  4. Add keyframes for the camera path and preview the timing.
  5. Export WebM for a direct clip or PNG for an image-sequence workflow.

Full-match archive

  1. Create the Lobby and Game scenes in OBS with the required Window Capture and Game Capture sources.
  2. Configure Automatic Scene Switcher for the two executable states.
  3. Start an active replay, confirm the Game source appears, and make a short test recording.
  4. Record the complete session and inspect the resulting file before relying on it as your only copy.

Keep exported footage usable after the replay expires

Use the replay only as the source stage. Once a Highlight, OBS recording or League Director export is verified, move or copy it to a normal video project folder and back it up with your other footage. Keep the original .rofl only when you still need to revisit the scene in the current patch cycle. This separation prevents a client update from becoming the only point of failure for a finished clip.

Bottom line: the best settings depend on the shot

For immediate clips, configure the client’s Replays locations, choose an appropriate Highlight quality and use Ctrl+V. For controlled camera work, use League Director with Very High graphics, a restarted replay, hidden HUD elements and keyframed movement. For complete recordings, build separate OBS Lobby and Game scenes, target LeagueClientUx.exe with Window Capture and League of Legends.exe with Game Capture, then test Automatic Scene Switcher in an active session.
