The best mower for wet autumn grass is the one that matches your lawn and lets you control traction and clippings. For a large, sloping or overgrown lawn, start with a self-propelled petrol mower such as the STIGA Combi 748 SE. For a smaller lawn, a cordless model such as Honda’s izy-ON range avoids fuel and cable handling; Husqvarna’s W520i adds rear-wheel drive for damp slopes. If the area is extensive and steep, the Husqvarna R 112C rider is the specialist option.
Wet grass is slippery, sticks beneath the deck and forms heavy clumps. Honda advises waiting until grass is dry to the touch whenever possible. If mowing cannot wait, raise the deck, make narrower passes, keep the blade at full speed and stop the machine completely before clearing any blockage.

Can you mow wet autumn grass?
You can, but postponing the job until the grass is dry to the touch is safer and usually produces a better cut. Honda’s maintenance guidance warns that wet grass is slippery and can make you lose your footing. Moist clippings also cling to the underside of the deck, restrict airflow, clog the discharge route and fall in dense piles instead of spreading evenly.

Autumn adds several complications. Grass may be longer after rapid growth, fallen leaves can hide holes or stones, and saturated soil offers less grip. A mower that feels stable on a dry, level lawn can slide or leave ruts when the ground is soft. No specification makes a mower safe on every saturated slope, so weather, soil condition and your ability to keep both feet or all wheels secure remain decisive.

When waiting is the right choice
- Postpone mowing when the lawn is visibly shiny, waterlogged or soft enough that your shoes sink in.
- Do not mow during rain or when visibility is poor.
- Wait if the only route requires crossing a steep slope where you cannot maintain a stable stance.
- Remove or postpone the job if leaves, branches or other debris conceal hazards.
If the grass must be cut
Use the highest practical cutting setting for the first pass, reduce the width of each pass and avoid forcing the machine through a blocked deck. Keep the blade at full operating speed so it can maintain airflow, but slow your walking pace. Stop the engine or blade before inspecting the deck; follow the owner’s manual for removing the ignition key, battery or other energy source before you reach into any area.
What matters most in a wet-grass mower?
Ground size and shape
A small, level lawn rewards a light cordless mower that is easy to turn and store. Large, sloping or uneven ground places greater value on self-propulsion, wheel traction, sustained power and a deck that can handle heavy growth without repeated stops. A wider deck can shorten mowing time, but only if the ground is firm enough to keep the mower under control.
Power source
Petrol mowers are heavier but generally more powerful, making them the stronger starting point for long, wet or overgrown autumn grass. Their extra mass can help the deck stay planted, although it also makes a bogged or sliding machine harder to recover.

Battery run time varies with grass height, moisture, blade speed, cutting width and battery condition. Honda says a 6.0 Ah battery in its izy-ON range can cut up to 450 square metres; that is a manufacturer-stated capability, not a guarantee in long, saturated grass.
Traction and drive
Self-propulsion matters more than headline cutting width on damp slopes because it reduces the need to push while the wheels are already coping with reduced grip. Rear-wheel drive can improve control when the mower’s rear is loaded with clippings. A ride-on with traction designed for slopes is appropriate only when the site, access and operator training justify that format.
Clipping management
Wet grass is usually easier to manage by collecting it or directing it through a discharge chute than by trying to mulch it. STIHL’s catalogue guidance says to avoid mulching when grass is wet. Collection prevents clumps from being left on the lawn but adds weight as the bag fills and requires more frequent emptying. Side or rear discharge keeps the deck moving freely, but discharged material must not be directed toward people, paths or water.

- Exclusive and industry-leading CVT (Continuously variable transmission) offers superior speed variability to adjust the mower pace to your walking speed by simply selecting the 6-speed shift lever
- Exclusive rubber tires with aggressive spiked tread pattern significantly increase overall traction and maneuverability
- Starting made easier with the automatic choke system, no need to prime or choke the engine
- Quickly clean the underside of the cutting deck with the deck cleanout port
- Single-lever deck adjustment for quickly setting your mow height
Height adjustment and workload control
A broad height range lets you take a conservative first cut instead of removing too much wet leaf area at once. Raising the deck also leaves more clearance for clippings. Plan on a second, lower cut after the lawn dries if you need a short finish; trying to reach final height in one wet pass increases clogging and bogging.

STIGA Combi 748 SE: the petrol choice for demanding autumn lawns
The Combi 748 SE is the clearest all-round choice when wet autumn growth is heavy and the lawn is too large for a small cordless mower. Its 139 cc petrol engine, self-propelled drive and electric start address the three common frustrations of damp mowing: sustained load, pushing effort and repeated starting.
A 60-litre collector gives you useful capacity for dense cuttings, although a full bag adds weight and can alter handling on a slope. Empty it before the mower becomes difficult to steer. The machine also supports mulching, side discharge and rear discharge. In wet conditions, use collection or a discharge mode rather than mulching; reserve mulching for dry grass when the manufacturer’s instructions and lawn condition permit it.
The 46 cm cutting width is a practical compromise. It covers ground faster than a narrow domestic deck without demanding the same turning space as a much wider machine. Its 22–80 mm height range allows a high first pass through wet or long grass and a lower follow-up cut once conditions improve.
How to set it up for damp grass
- Set the deck near the upper end of its range for the first pass.
- Choose collection or rear/side discharge rather than mulching.
- Engage self-propulsion at a pace that keeps the blade loaded without forcing the machine.
- Make overlapping but narrower passes if the grass is tall, and stop before the collector becomes excessively heavy.
- After switching off and isolating the machine as directed in the manual, clean the deck and discharge path.
Honda izy-ON: a cordless option for smaller lawns
Honda describes its izy-ON range as IP54 weatherproof, which is useful protection for normal outdoor handling but does not mean the mower should be operated in standing water or left exposed to rain. The range is aimed at reducing routine fuel handling and cable management, making it attractive for a smaller lawn that can be completed within the available battery capacity.

Treat that as a best-case manufacturer claim: saturated, long grass requires more energy, and repeated attempts to clear clippings can reduce the area completed on one charge. If your lawn is close to that limit, keep a charged spare battery or plan a drying window rather than assuming the full area is available in every season.

- MORE CUTTING POWER: Powerful 170cc 4-stroke OHV engine delivers reliable performance for thick grass and larger yards. Auto choke and recoil start make starting easy.
- LESS PUSHING EFFORT: Self-propelled rear-wheel drive provides better traction on slopes and uneven terrain, reducing pushing effort.
- WIDER CUTS: Wide 22-inch cutting path helps finish mowing faster, while the durable steel deck and heavy-duty blade are built to last season after season.
- VERSATILE 3-IN-1 SYSTEM: Choose between mulching, rear bagging, or rear discharge to match changing lawn conditions.
- EASY HEIGHT CHANGES: Easily adjust cutting height from 1.5" to 3.9" for different mowing needs.
Where it works well
- Small, mostly level lawns with manageable autumn growth.
- Homes where low routine handling and quieter cordless operation are priorities.
- Users who can wait for a dry-to-the-touch window and avoid forcing the mower through dense wet material.
Where to choose something stronger
Move to a self-propelled petrol mower when the lawn is large, steep, persistently overgrown or likely to exceed the battery’s practical capacity. A weatherproof rating does not compensate for limited traction or a battery that is drained before the job is complete.
Husqvarna W520i: cordless traction for damp ground
The W520i combines cordless operation with self-propulsion, rear-wheel drive and a wide aluminium deck. Those features target the point at which a light push mower becomes tiring or unstable: damp ground with enough slope or length to require continuous control.
Its listed clipping choices are collection, BioClip and rear discharge. Use collection when you need a tidy finish and can empty the bag safely; use rear discharge when wet material is clogging the bag or when the lawn can accept an even trail of clippings. BioClip should be reserved for conditions allowed by the operating guidance, not used as a default simply because the function is available.
Practical buying check
Confirm the battery, charger and any required accessories for the exact regional package. Product information establishes the drive and deck design but does not establish a universal area-per-charge figure, so size your battery plan against your own grass height, moisture and slope rather than comparing an assumed runtime.
Husqvarna R 112C: when a ride-on format makes sense
The R 112C is a specialist answer for larger areas where wet slopes make a walk-behind mower impractical. Husqvarna specifically describes traction for slopes and wet conditions. Its ride-on format can reduce walking effort and improve control over a broad area, but it also demands suitable access, storage, a clear route and an operator who can judge slope limits safely.
The machine offers BioClip or rear discharge. On wet autumn grass, rear discharge is generally the more practical starting point because wet material is less likely to be forced through a mulching process. BioClip belongs in drier conditions and where the lawn can absorb finely processed clippings without visible clumps.

Check the site before choosing a rider
- Measure gates, paths and storage doors before purchase.
- Identify soft ground, drop-offs, hidden obstacles and areas where turning could cause rutting.
- Confirm that the manufacturer’s slope guidance covers your terrain; never infer a safe angle from traction alone.
- Plan where discharged grass will go and keep people clear of the route.
How to mow wet autumn grass with fewer clogs
- Inspect the lawn. Remove branches, stones and toys, and look for holes or soft patches hidden by leaves.
- Test the surface. Walk the route first. If you slip or leave deep footprints, wait for firmer ground.
- Raise the cutting height. Take only the top portion of long growth on the first pass.
- Select collection or discharge. Avoid wet mulching; use a collector if you need a tidy result and can empty it before handling becomes awkward.
- Set a controlled pace. Let the blade maintain full speed, but make narrower swaths and avoid abrupt turns.
- Watch the discharge. A sudden change in engine note, a trail of clumps or reduced airflow indicates loading. Stop before the deck packs solid.
- Clear blockages safely. Stop the machine and follow the owner’s isolation procedure before touching the deck or chute. Never use your hands while the blade could move.
- Finish with maintenance. Clean wet residue from the deck, inspect the blade and leave the machine dry and ready for the next session.
Maintenance that prevents the next clog
Clean the deck and discharge route
Wet clippings harden as they dry. After every damp session, isolate the mower exactly as the manual specifies, then remove accumulated material from the deck and discharge path with a suitable tool. Do not tip or wash a battery or petrol machine in a way the manual forbids. Store it where remaining moisture can evaporate.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsKeep the blade sharp
A sharp blade cuts cleanly and maintains airflow more effectively than a damaged or dull one. Inspect for bends, cracks and impact damage after striking hidden debris. Use the manufacturer’s sharpening or replacement procedure rather than improvising a balance or fastening method.
Check wheels, drive and collector
Clear mud from wheel treads and confirm that self-propulsion engages smoothly. Inspect the collector for tears or blocked vents, because restricted airflow encourages clumping. On cordless models, store and charge batteries according to the battery manual; on petrol models, follow the engine maintenance schedule.
Common wet-grass problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Clippings form a solid mat under the deck | Grass is too wet, the cut is too low or the discharge path is restricted | Stop and isolate the mower, clear it safely, raise the deck and use collection or discharge |
| Mower bogs down in long patches | Pass is too wide or the blade is overloaded | Reduce the swath, slow your pace and take a higher first cut |
| Wheels spin on a slope | Saturated soil and insufficient traction | Stop if control is compromised; wait for firmer ground or use a mower designed for the terrain |
| Battery empties before the lawn is finished | Wet, tall grass consumes more energy than the quoted best-case area | Recharge or use a spare battery, and schedule mowing for drier conditions |
| Heavy rows of wet grass remain behind | Collection is full or discharge cannot move material | Empty the collector more often, change discharge mode and clean the chute |
Which mower should you choose?
Choose the STIGA Combi 748 SE when
Your lawn is large, sloping or frequently overgrown and you want petrol power, self-propulsion, a 60-litre collector and multiple clipping modes. Its 46 cm deck and 22–80 mm adjustment provide useful control over first and finishing passes.
Choose a Honda izy-ON when
You have a smaller, mainly level lawn and value cordless convenience. Keep the 450 m² figure tied to Honda’s 6.0 Ah battery claim and allow for lower real-world coverage in saturated growth.
Choose the Husqvarna W520i when
You want cordless operation but need self-propulsion, rear-wheel drive and a robust deck for damp ground. Verify the exact battery package and plan conservatively because a universal wet-grass runtime is not established.
Choose the Husqvarna R 112C when
You manage a larger property where wet slopes and walking effort justify a ride-on mower. Confirm access, storage and slope suitability before treating it as an upgrade over a walk-behind machine.
Quick Recap
Safety rules worth treating as non-negotiable
- Wait for grass to dry to the touch whenever possible.
- Wear footwear with reliable grip and keep bystanders away from discharge paths.
- Never reach into a deck or chute until the machine is stopped and isolated according to its manual.
- Do not defeat guards or operate with damaged collectors, decks or discharge components.
- Stop immediately if traction is lost, the mower begins sliding or the ground starts rutting.
